Hitting the lounge with style Life is a bit slower for Paul Shaffer since his bandleading duties concluded along with the iconic Late Show with David Letterman in 2015. But it’s not like the composer and multi-instrumentalist has retired. This year, he released an album, performed on both Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night shows and has a mini-residency at Caesars Palace’s Cleopatra’s Barge Dec. 28-30 and Jan. 4-6 with his hard-hitting funk and pop band, the Shaf-Shifters. Las Vegas Magazine’s Brock Radke recently found out what to expect from Shaffer’s new musical adventure.

Have you ever performed any other show like this in Las Vegas?

No, not at all. I’ve kind of kidded about this type of performance, the Las Vegas lounge performer, as have all of my contemporaries.

It’s so anachronistic, especially when we were coming up in the rock ’n’ roll era, wearing blue jeans to do Saturday Night Live instead of tuxes. But now I am kind of fulfilling what is sort of my destiny by taking a position and doing what I’m calling a miniresidency at the iconic Cleopatra’s Barge, and I’m absolutely tickled to do it.

Is that because this is the perfect Las Vegas room to do it?

Absolutely. The young executives from Caesars had the idea to sort of bring back the days when there was live music in lounges, because not only are they few and far between, but the ones that are still around seldom have a band anymore. This is going to be a lounge show in the old-fashioned sense of the words. My history with Las Vegas is that my parents took me when I was about 12 years old and I saw Sarah Vaughan in a lounge at the Riviera, and I never got over it. It fascinated me.

the greatest lounge performer. So one really has to nod to him, but I’ll try to do it with my own kind of music. But I want that feeling, as if the guys from the Rat Pack might drop by after their shows to go onstage.

What kind of musical direction should we expect?

R&B is my favorite, so I think we’re going to hang around that genre, but after all these years of doing it in all these different venues and on TV, I’ve got a lot of stories and I find that people like to hear inside stories about some of this music.

I’m nothing if not a fountain of this stuff. So I’m going to be telling stories and interweaving them with music. There’ll be songs from my idols and the people that inspired me.

Are you hoping to extend this mini-residency into something recurring or more permanent in Las Vegas?

You can only see how it goes.

Right now I like the feel of a miniresidency, like the Who did there (at Caesars Palace). I think they were the first to call it that. So I’m thinking of myself as sort of a shorter Pete Townshend.

It’s been a few years but do you still miss the TV gig?

Certainly it was a big change. I

think it took me all this time to adjust. We were all going 100 miles per hour without many breaks, very high-strung all the time, then all of a sudden we don’t have to be anywhere. Now I’ve really come to appreciate it and I’m proud of having accomplished it, completed that run of 33 years.

It feels great to have done it, and it feels great to be a little more relaxed than I was back then. I can sleep longer hours. All kinds of little physical things have changed, which is really funny. But

it was a great privilege to be able to do it.

You reunited with the World’s Most Dangerous Band to release an album this year. Any plans to record new music?

I certainly had fun doing that one. One never knows. I’m very much focused on this residency right now and figuring out what the most fun songs to do would be. I think that would be worth recording. I’d love to do video and audio of this little engagement.

If you’re wondering how quickly hotels are built on the Strip, consider this: From 2007 to 2008, one floor was added to Aria by construction crews every seven days.

Nevada is popularly known as a state with no income tax, but it’s not the only one. Six others also have no state income tax: Alaska, Florida, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

What’s in a name? Let’s put it this way: When Mandalay Bay was being built, its working title was “Project Paradise.”

The name was changed when it opened in 1999.

Las Vegas’ “mega-resorts” (hotels with thousands of rooms) got their start with Steve Wynn’s 3,044room resort, The Mirage, in 1989.

Party Till the World Ends During Britney Spears’ mega-successful run as a Vegas headliner (her four-year Piece of Me residency ends Dec. 31), she introduced such features as riding a giant guitar like a mechanical bull during her cover of “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll.”

Showing her passion for fashion Shanda Rogers lives in a closet. Ask the 33-year-old model and fashion blogger about the perils of her work, and that’s what she’ll tell you. Shopping for free becomes an addiction, and all those platform boots, embellished jeans and fabulous coats have to go somewhere. “The whole house in Vegas is a closet,” Rogers says.

“I live in a closet with a bed and a kitchen. It’s consuming me.”

And it’s not just the clothes. For Rogers, being a fashion blogger and Instagram influencer with more than 660,000 followers doesn’t just mean strutting around attractive locations wearing stylish outfits. Behind every photo on her feed are hours of work, from coordinating collaborations with labels like Rebecca Minkoff and Revolve to picking out items that match her “Jekyll and Hyde” taste, altering pieces so they fit perfectly, assembling outfits and scouting locations. Rogers also arranges each photograph, setting up the shot so it meets her standards and editing the images before they go live.

“I have my own vision,” she says, and she’s willing to work to make it a reality. That vision extends beyond Rogers’ fashion work. The Arkansas native dabbles in a wide variety of artistic pursuits, from painting and music to interior design. “I’m a jack of all trades,” she says. “I have to be creative. Any way I can express myself, I’m down.”

When it comes to clothes, that self-expression leans toward denim, statement jackets and bold accessories. When she was younger, Rogers was into a punk rock look, but as she’s gotten older, the petite blonde says she’s grown interested in texture and quality, modern pieces that are sexy and sophisticated without veering into trashy.

The mezzanine level houses five VIP skybox suites: The Blind Tiger, The Studio, The G.O.A.T.,

For this mixologist, creativity leads to connectivity When it comes to what he loves about his job, it’s all about ideation and fruition for Daniel Marohnic, property mixologist for Aria and Vdara.

“Menu development doesn’t do it justice— it’s really about the creative process of trying to figure out what’s next, challenging yourself to show what’s next and see that come to life,” Marohnic says. “It’s really cool when you get to watch people enjoy the results.”

The Illinois native first starting working with spirits as a bartender in 1998 in Atlanta, and quickly discovered a love for the industry. His career eventually brought him to Las Vegas in 2002, and by 2008 he was running one of downtown’s most-talked about speakeasies.

That’s also where other industry folks noticed Marohnic’s knack for creating impressive craft

That reputation afforded him the opportunity to swim in a bigger pond, a whole property filled with bars and restaurants—he joined Aria in May. “Honestly, if you’re going to do beverage development, cocktail programs, beer programs, there’s no place where you could touch more people,” Marohnic says about Aria. Since he joined the property, he’s worked with nearly every venue, helping them refresh and renew cocktail programs.

Marohnic wants people to know it’s not only about the cocktails, though. “It’s hospitality first, always. We listen to our guests and we try and find a way to test their limits but play within those lines. We want them to experience something new yet familiar.” –Kiko Miyasato

One of the bar programs that Marohnic has worked closely with since joining Aria is Bardot Brasserie. to complement the restaurant and bar’s French identity in food, drink and design, Marohnic created cocktails that captured Bardot’s character. The Bon Vivant is “about enjoying the finer things in life, especially cocktails and cuisine,” he says.

“The taste of the cocktail is elegant and refined.”

Home Grown Rock bands like The Killers, Imagine Dragons and Panic! at the Disco have been representing Las Vegas nationally and internationally for a while now, but the city hasn’t been as successful at producing hip-hop stars. That may change with Vegas rapper Dizzy Wright, who’s been on a steady rise since signing to indie hip-hop label Funk Volume in 2012. He’s released a series of mixtapes, studio albums

and EPs in the past five years, with collaborators including Wyclef Jean, Logic and members of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony.

Wright started rapping alongside his brother when they were just kids, thanks to his mom, who worked in the music industry and was so close with Bone Thugs members Layzie Bone and Flesh-n-Bone that Wright referred to them as his uncles. His mom may

have written lyrics for him when he was a kid, but Wright has grown up a lot since then, and he’s matured as a rapper, a musician and a lyricist, while continuing to rep Vegas in his songs. On his latest release, November’s State of Mind 2, he takes on both politics and partying in what Hip-Hop DX called “intellectual music for spliff lighters.” He’s still making Vegas proud. –Josh Bell

What’s in the Words?

Loverboy’s “Working For The Weekend” is ubiquitous with pop culture. It’s been featured in films from Zoolander to Click. It’s used in the successful video games Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Saints Row 2. It’s made television appearances on the Adult Swim animated show Regular Show and in a RadioShack Super Bowl commercial.

And, perhaps most famously, it’s the song Chris Farley and Patrick Swayze gyrate to on Saturday Night Live’s “Chippendales” skit.

Though the track only reached No. 29 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, it has taken on a life of its own. “Working For The Weekend” denotes a time, a place and a memory for people. It’s an anthem for people trying to finish up the work week so they can party 1980’s style from Friday at 5 p.m. all the way till Monday morning. It’s a mantra as much as it is a song. “You want a piece of my heart? / You better start from the start / You want to be in the show ?/ C’mon baby, let’s go.” Yes, Loverboy. Together Again!

For more than three decades, The Misfits have seen their music covered by dozens of punk bands. But given that The Misfits’ founding members hadn’t shared a stage since Michael Jackson’s Thriller was topping the charts, it seemed more likely that the band’s fans (Fiends, as they’re known) had a better chance of seeing a zombie apocalypse than a reunion of singer Glenn Danzig, bassist Jerry Only and guitarist Doyle (who is Only’s brother).Then early in 2016, a funny thing happened while Danzig and Jerry engaged in yet another legal tussle: They buried the hatchet and agreed to perform together. Alas, after two wildly successful concerts at last fall’s Riot Fest, The Misfits vanished, leaving all to wonder if the original lineup would ever again be resurrected. A Personal New Year’s Eve It wouldn’t be too far-fetched to say that rapper Ja Rule and R&B singer Ashanti owe their careers to each other. Their first team-up on 2001 single “Always on Time,” from Ja Rule’s third album Pain Is Love, gave Ja Rule his second No. 1 hit and Ashanti her first, and it was the start of a long series of collaborations for the pair that continues to this day. Before that song, Ja Rule had scored some pretty major hits, including “Between Me and You,” “Put It on Me” and “Livin’ It Up,” while Ashanti had just started making waves with guest appearances on songs by artists including Big Pun and Fat Joe. The song that followed “Always on Time” at No. 1 on the Billboard singles chart was another Ja Rule/ Ashanti jam: Jennifer Lopez’s “Ain’t It Funny,” featuring guest appearances from both vocalists. Since then, the two have regularly returned to their team-up, including on 2002’s “Mesmerize,” 2004’s “Wonderful” and a version of “Helpless” from the hit musical Hamilton, on 2016’s The Hamilton Mixtape. They have a special chemistry that keeps bringing them together, something that fans can experience up close this New Year’s Eve in Vegas at the intimate Brooklyn Bowl. –Josh Bell

than Pennywise. Formed in 1988 in Hermosa Beach, Calif., Pennywise rejected the hair-metal genre that defined the Southern

California rock scene throughout the 1980s.

Instead, it chose to be at the forefront of a punk revolution that, by the early 1990s, would see fellow bands such as Blink-182, Bad Religion and Green Day cross over.

Over the years, Pennywise continued its unconventional ways, opting for lyrics that promoted a positive mental attitude, rather than the usual angst and anarchy. Clearly, their message resonated with an audience: Through 2007, Pennywise had independently sold more than 3 million records worldwide.

Next year, Pennywise commemorates its 30th anniversary with its 12th studio album, but first the crew will trek across the desert to close out 2017 by headlining an all-punk New Year’s Eve show. Perhaps they’ll bring along some of their California-based Pennywiser beer to celebrate when the clock strikes midnight. Yep, they have their own beer—told you they were unconventional … –Matt Jacob

Although Maroon 5 have an extensive tour planned to support their latest album, Red Pill Blues, the first chance most fans will get to hear the new songs live will be at the band’s annual New Year’s Eve shows in Las Vegas.

Now a septet—Maroon 7, in effect—they’ve whetted fans’ appetites with singles, talk show appearances and a performance of single “What Lovers Do” on The Voice, the televised platform that maintains singer Adam Levine’s stature as a household name. That, in turn, gives Maroon 5 a marketing boost that contributed to Red Pill Blues debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200.

debuting with Songs About Jane, including relative stability. Several of the band members were in Maroon 5’s previous incarnation as Kara’s Flowers, but Levine and keyboardist/guitarist Jesse Carmichael first met as teenagers at a summer camp with a state-ofthe-art recording studio. Bassist Mickey Madden and drummer Ryan Dusick soon bonded with Carmichael and Levine, and lead guitarist James Valentine came on board when Kara’s Flowers became Maroon 5 in 2001.

The only major lineup change has been Matt Flynn taking over on drums in 2006 after touring exacerbated Dusick’s sports injuries. Keyboardist PJ Morton and multiinstrumentalist Sam Farrar rounded out the

band’s sound live and/or in the studio before becoming full-time members, but Maroon 5 guest vocalists and collaborations with songwriters and producers have been extensive since Christina Aguilera’s contribution to “Moves Like Jagger” resulted in a No. 1 hit in 2011. The 2010s brought Wiz Khalifa, Gwen Stefani and Dr. Luke into the studio, while the rotating army of producers and songwriters has included Benny Blanco, Ryan Tedder and Sia, with each track a team effort accomplished with a different squad.

The songs on Red Pill Blues were constructed in similar fashion, but the album has a feel that Valentine has described in video filmed for Maroon 5’s YouTube channel as “Understated … laid-back and chill.” In keeping with their pattern of working with rising talent, they worked with J Kash as producer on the single “Cold,” which was released in February and featured a guest turn by rapper Future. He was then brought in as executive producer for the new album.

They also recruited talent such as SZA, Julia Michaels, LunchMoney Lewis and A$AP Rocky to infuse Red Pill Blues (the title was inspired by sci-fi film The Matrix) with cutting-edge, pop-chart appeal. “It was based on their talent and their new freshness on the scene,” said Levine of the criteria for qualifying as a Maroon 5 guest artist at the band’s IHeartRadio Red Pill record release party in November. “It was all song appropriate.” So far song appropriateness has resulted in six Top 10 albums and 13 Top 10 singles, the latter being the most any band has earned in the 2000s. With an entire 2018 tour ahead of them Maroon 5 is likely to extend that record, with Nickelback a distant second place and unlikely to catch up.

Hot spots for cool holiday cocktails in Las Vegas

Sloe Sleigh Ride

Everybody loves a good cocktail.

But what’s even better is having a reason to love a good cocktail, and there’s no greater excuse to imbibe than the celebration of the holidays. Cool cocktails can quickly warm you up and bring you holiday cheer. We ventured out onto the Strip and hit up lounges at various properties with some of the most inventive holiday cocktail menus, all to make your celebrations easier.

We sampled. We sipped. And we each picked our favorite.

The Sloe Sleigh Ride is properly named, because you’ll want to take your time with this cocktail–it’s so dangerously easy to drink it could quickly add some ring-ting to your tingle. Served in a Collins glass, El Dorado rum and sloe gin create a mystifying amber mixture. An egg white froth tops the cocktail and acts like a creamy funnel.

You’ll first taste the sweet flavor of rum and sloe gin, but you’ll slowly recognize hints of cinnamon, which will put you in the holiday spirit. Lime juice balances out the sweetness while soda water adds some fizz.

Out of all of The Dorsey’s handcrafted seasonal cocktail offerings, I have to say my fave from the list of the liquid deliciousness is the Juniper Myrrh. This one is sleek-looking, served in a champagne glass and fittingly topped off with champagne.

It’s refreshing—reminiscent of the wintry outdoors, thanks to the lime juice and eucalyptus-rosemary gum syrup made in-house. The St. George Terroir gin gives it that earthy kick thanks to the gin’s juniper base—a piney, woodsy flavoring.

Merry Christmas

Mint Chocolate martini

I have friends who actually celebrate Christmas in July. They exchange small gifts and maybe watch a holiday movie or two, but it’s really more of a novelty than a true affection for Christmas. (I know, Millennials are so ironic.) Tropicana Lounge does the opposite and celebrates the summer during Christmas with a festive twist on a Tom Collins, the Merry Christmas. Gin is combined with soda water, hand-squeezed lemon and cranberry juice. A lime garnish adds a hint of green to the cocktail’s cranberry hue, and a Collins glass represents a chimney, but that’s where the Christmas symbols end. Once you start drinking, you’ll feel cheery and refreshed, as if you’ve been transported to a sandy beach.

Who loves peppermint bark? Me, I personally love the one from Costco. Well, if a Costco run isn’t in your immediate future, try stopping by Tropicana Lounge, take a comfortable seat at the bar and order the Mint Chocolate martini—it’s a sippable piece of peppermint bark. Hello, yum! The ingredients are kept to a minimum—Ketel One vodka, white crème de menthe and Godiva White Chocolate liqueur—but the flavor packs a powerful, minty-chocolatey punch. To get the pink color, a splash of grenadine is added. For even more sweet surrender, it’s sprinkled with dark chocolate shavings. The holiday menu also offers tasty pick-me-up cocktails—three delish coffee cocktails with seasonal flavors like caramel, cinnamon and cherry.

Minty Fresh

S’More Delight

Teacher says every time a bell rings an angel gets its wings, but I’m sure it also applies to every time you sip the Minty Fresh, because it made me feel like flying. (Disclaimer: We had a lot of cocktails that day.) As the name suggests, the cocktail heavily involves mint. But let me remind you that the drink is called Minty Fresh, not Aquafresh. So, rest assured, the mint flavor is subdued by more intriguing ingredients. Van Gogh Dutch chocolate vodka is mixed with coconut rum, crème de menthe and shaved ice. At first, it tastes less like alcohol and more like a peppermint patty (which is actually used as a garnish). But if you let it sit for a minute, the strength of the alcohol emerges, creating an icy, full-bodied flavor.

To say I love s’mores would be an understatement. To say I’ve found a cocktail that’s like a s’more—without the campfire, cold temps and sticky, gooey muss and fuss—would be totally true. The S’More Delight at Vista Cocktail Lounge, well, definitely left me wanting s’more. The mixture of RumChata (giving it that nice hint of cinnamon), Van Gogh Dutch chocolate vodka, white crème de cacao, cream and marshmallow syrup all sits beneath a thick, decadent, house-made whipped cream and is topped off with two large toasted marshmallows and graham crackers. Halfway through drinking the cocktail and I was already turning into that little orphan Oliver ... “Please sir, I want s’more.”

Bourbon Pecan Pie

Sno-Ball martini

I was never fond of martinis, and unless your name is James Bond, you probably don’t enjoy them either. But the Sno-Ball martini made my cold, tiny heart grow three sizes after my first sip, forever changing my attitude toward the classic libation.

The cocktail is inspired by those pink, delectable finger cakes you may have found packed in your lunchbox as a kid: Hostess Sno Balls. Who knew they’d make a liquefied comeback in your adult life? Creamy marshmallow-infused vodka is mixed with white chocolate liqueur, coconut purée and simple syrup.

Its distinct pinkness is achieved with a splash of grenadine, and the rim is coated with toasted coconut flakes, which look frosty and add an oddly satisfying crunch to your cocktail.

When I saw the coupe glass coming my way with the rim coated in sugar and cinnamon, well, I knew this cocktail was going to be my favorite pick. And I was right. The Bourbon Pecan Pie cocktail got better with each sip. The fresh, Frenchpressed dark roast coffee added full-bodied flavor to the mix of Bailey’s Irish Cream liqueur, Kahlua and simple syrup. The holiday flavoring is enhanced by the very potent pecan taste of Revel Stoke Roasted Pecan whiskey. It’s dessert in a glass. The view while sipping on this cocktail is definitely a holiday gift in itself as the SkyLounge offers stunning vistas of the valley below. And the romantic ambience makes it a great place to steal a kiss under the mistletoe.

During the holidays, tradition is important. It comforts us when we’re away from our friends, our families, or even when we are with our families but they’re intolerable. And while many traditional holiday cocktails exist, you can’t get more traditional than an Old Fashioned. Aria’s Ye Olde Fashioned stays true to the simplicity and elegance of the classic cocktail, but tweaks the approach. Rather than bourbon, rye whiskey is used for a dry, robust flavor. But you wouldn’t know that immediately.

You’ll first taste the thick, sweet flavor of maple and cranberry syrups, then the boldness of the rye slowly sneaks up on your tastebuds. The concoction is poured over a giant ice cube and garnished with an orange peel for class.

It’s like snow packed inside a shiny cup; more distinctly, it’s crushed ice inside a copper cup. It’s Aria’s fun take on the Moscow Mule, and it’s called the Mule-Tide Cheer. Besides the cool part (the cocktail stays cold the whole time, thanks to the copper cup), guests also get to choose which spirit base they want to use: Belvedere vodka, Bacardi rum or Cazadores tequila. It’s like a build-your-own cocktail! Then pomegranate syrup gives it sweetness. Mixed together with the slight spice of ginger beer, this cocktail quickly becomes Christmas in a cup. The fresh lemon gives it a slight tartness, one that’ll have you lip-smacking before you certainly find that cheer and decide to order another one.
