A message from the artistic director GABE SALAZAR
The holiday season invites us to gather with the people who make us feel seen. For many in our community, that circle is a family of choice, and these concerts honor the joy and comfort we find in each other. Holiday Slay Ride was created to capture the playful side of the season. It brings color, camp, and sparkle to a time that reminds us to laugh and celebrate together. Carols by Candlelight offers a quieter space that holds the traditions we grew up with. Its music feels like a warm memory, shared with the people who carried us through the years. Presenting two different programs lets us reflect the full spectrum of what this season means.
Both concerts lift the voices that define our chorus. They show how music builds connection and how harmony can shape a sense of belonging. Whether someone joins us for a night of fun or a moment of reflection, we hope they feel the care and authenticity behind every note. This time of year reminds us why our mission matters. When we sing for our community, we keep creating spaces where LGBTQ+ people can live their truth and feel embraced.
We also look ahead with renewed purpose. Our season carries the theme Invincible It speaks to the courage that drives us, the resilience that defines our history, and the unity that strengthens us for what lies ahead. Invincible is a reminder that our voices remain powerful, our stories deserve to be heard, and our music continues to open minds and change hearts. As we move into the new year, the chorus will keep singing with pride, clarity, and a belief that our shared harmony can shape a brighter future.
I am grateful to everyone who walks this journey with us. Thank you for celebrating the season with GMCSF and for standing with us as we step into a year filled with possibility and purpose.
With gratitude,
ABOUT US

MISSION: We sing so that LGBTQ+ people can live their truth through quality music experiences that inspire audiences, open minds, change hearts, and affirm our common humanity. VISION: A diverse world united.
The Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida (GMCSF) is a vibrant community of voices, blending generations and cultures in harmony with one mission: to shape a brighter, more inclusive future through music. GMCSF stands as a powerful force for advocacy, using the universal language of music to transcend social barriers and uplift the LGBTQ+ community.
With a roster of over 160 talented singers, GMCSF is the largest gay men’s chorus in the southeastern United States and one of the top ten LGBTQ+ choruses in the country. Our grand-scale concerts, meaningful community engagements, and volunteer-driven outreach touch lives throughout South Florida and beyond. Under the direction of Artistic Director Gabe Salazar, GMCSF captivates more than 35,000 live audience members annually, while welcoming over 72,000 visitors to its growing digital platform, gmcsf.org.
A significant milestone was reached in December 2016 when GMCSF partnered Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood to present its holiday concert at Hard Rock Live. What began as a landmark event has evolved into a dynamic nine-year partnership rooted in music, visibility, and community impact. Today, Seminole Hard Rock continues to amplify its mission as the Amplified Season Sponsor and host of The Chic & Unique Ball, its signature fundraiser.
The Chorus welcomes singers of all identities who sing in the lower vocal range (Tenor 1, Tenor 2, Baritone, Bass), with auditions held throughout the season. Our impact reaches from Miami Heat and Miami Marlins Pride Nights to the International Gay Polo Tournament in Wellington and Treasure Coast Pride Fest at the Saint Lucie County Fairgrounds, driven by the heart and dedication of our volunteers. Whether on stage or in service, GMCSF stands united in building bridges and creating space where everyone can live their truth.

PROGRAM NOTES PROGRAM NOTES
ANGELS WE HAVE HEARD ON HIGH is a new arrangement for male choruses by Dan Forrest. It is based on the French carol “Gloria.” The English lyric most familiar today was written in 1862 by James Chadwick, a Roman Catholic bishop. It is most memorable for the Latin words “Gloria in excelsis Deo” which translates to “Glory to God in the Highest.” This famous carol recounts the nativity story from the Gospel of Luke. It is widely sung in churches and concerts worldwide and has been frequently recorded by many distinguished artists including The Tabernacle Choir, Josh Groban, Pentatonix, Andrea Bocelli and Nat King Cole.
CHILDREN, GO WHERE I SEND THEE is a traditional African American spiritual. This version was arranged by Kevin Phillip Johnson. The song was made popular by the Golden Gate Quartet in the 1930s. The lead singer of the group was Willie T. Johnson, Kevin Phillip Johnson’s father. This version of the song is a vibrant, rhythmic version of the of the African American spiritual, blending the traditional spiritual style with contemporary choral and gospel influences. Many versions and adaptations of the song have been recorded over the years by such artists as Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nina Simone, Johnny Cash, Audra McDonald, and The Tabernacle Choir.
FESTIVAL GLORIA, composed by Craig Courtney, is based on the traditional liturgical text Gloria, which recounts the birth of Jesus. It is also a key liturgical text in the Roman Catholic Mass. The GMCSF has performed various versions of Gloria since the Chorus’ inaugural performance in 2010, with works by Dan Forrest, Randol Alan Bass, Kevin Memley, and Mark Hayes. Courtney earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Cincinnati. He studied piano in Italy and was invited to join the faculty of the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Austria. While in Salzburg, he began composing sacred choral music in English. He has composed more than 200 choral works, including vocal collections, piano solos and compositions for choir and orchestra.
GOD REST YE MERRY, GENTLEMEN was first published in 1833 when it appeared in Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern, a collection of seasonal carols compiled by William B. Sandys. This volume also contained “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”. Although the author is unknown, the lyrics are believed to date back to at least the 16th century. It is believed that this carol was sung to the gentry by town guards seeking to earn additional income during the Christmas season. The carol retells the nativity story, focusing on the joy and comfort that Christ’s birth brings to humankind. This beautiful version of the carol was arranged by David Maddux. Some more recent recordings of this popular English carol include Garth Brooks, Annie Lennox, and Mariah Carey.
HOW GREAT OUR JOY! is indeed a joyous piece of music, thoughtfully arranged by Craig Courtney. The song is based on a traditional German carol by Jungst. Courtney is well represented in tonight’s concert with another one of his magnificent compositions, “Festival Gloria”. In Courtney’s own words, he explains his motivation in writing this piece: “Everyone is familiar with the cheerful, exuberant side of joy. My goal in writing this anthem was to explore the other side of joy – the reflective, lyric, rhapsodic. This kind of joy is a more complex emotion which can stand the test of time and is borne of wisdom and experience.”
JOY! JOY! JOY TO THE WORLD!, loosely based on the famous carol “Joy to the World,” was written by Chad Weirick. The original carol was composed by Isaac Watts in 1719. It is one of the most published Christmas carols in North America. This modern version has lyrics that reflect the delight and enjoyment of the season: “Joy! Joy! Joy to the world for the light has come. Let all the people sing. And let everybody sing together….So , now let’s celebrate this moment that we have – with the gift of song!
LIGHT THE LEGEND is a modern song for Chanukah (Hanukkah) commissioned for male choir and keyboard by Cantor Jay Frailich for the University Synagogue of Los Angeles. The melody was written by Michael Isaacson, with English lyrics by Susan Nuremberg and Hebrew lyrics by Steven Reuben. This piece is the first movement of Isaacson’s larger work, Aspects of a Great Miracle, written in 1997. “Light the Legend” is a retelling of the Chanukah story when Judah Maccabee, led by a group of Jewish fighters (the Maccabees), revolted against the Greek-Syrian empire to reclaim the Holy Temple. The Maccabees found a small jar of oil, enough to relight the eternal flame in the synagogue for one day. Miraculously, the small amount of oil burned continuously for eight days. This miracle explains the reason why Chanukah is celebrated for eight nights.
MATUNDA YA KWANZAA is a song that embraces the Kwanzaa celebration. The song, arranged by David Maddux, is based on text by Maulana Karenga, who created the festival of Kwanzaa in 1966. Kwanzaa is a Swahili word for “first fruits,” and it is the foundation of the celebration which honors African American heritage through harvest festivals. An essential part of the Kwanzaa festival is the Nguzo Saba, “seven principles” introduced by Karenga to inspire unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith.
O COME, ALL YE FAITHFUL (ADESTE FIDELIS) is a traditional English Christmas carol that has been attributed to several authors, including John Francis Wade whose name appears on the earliest printed versions. The first printed source for “Adeste Fidelis” was printed by Wade in his collection Cantus Diversi in 1751. The text has been translated many times, and the most common version today is a combination of translations by Frederick Oakeley and William Thomas Brooke. The melody has been attributed to not only Wade, but also John Reading and Handel. The version you are hearing tonight has been beautifully arranged by Dan Forrest.
PINK CHRISTMAS is of course a parody of the holiday standard “White Christmas” with music and lyrics by the prolific Irving Berlin. The song was originally composed for the 1942 movie Holiday Inn and of course was later the title song for the movie White Christmas. This version of the song was arranged by Chad Wierick, the assistant music director and accompanist for the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus. Gerard Alessandrini, who wrote the lyrics for this parody, is an accomplished, Tony Award winning composer, best known for his creation of the long-running off-Broadway musical revue Forbidden Broadway which has spoofed Broadway shows and performers over the last forty years.
PROGRAM NOTES
RING THOSE CHRISTMAS BELLS is a vibrant, upbeat Christmas song, with music and lyrics by Gus Levene and Marvin Fisher. It was originally published in 1952 and first recorded by Peggy Lee on the flip side of her single, “It’s Christmas Time Again.” The Tabernacle Choir has performed a more recent version. A major highlight of the song is the use of a handbell choir which adds a lot of fun and excitement to the piece.
SILENT NIGHT is the English translation of the German carol “Stille Nacht”. This version, arranged by Dan Forrest, is based on the original piece with lyrics by Joseph Mohr and music by Franz Grüber. “Silent Night” was first performed in the Church of St. Nicholas in Oberndorf, Austria on Christmas Eve, 1818. One often repeated story is that the church organ was damaged by either flooding or mice. Therefore, Grüber created the song with guitar accompaniment. GMCSF originally performed this version of the carol in 2019. GMCSF was part of a consortium of six GALA choruses that commissioned this stirring composition.
THE FIRST NOEL, is a beautiful traditional English Christmas carol, first published in William B. Sandys’ Carols, Ancient and Modern along with “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” and “I Saw Three Ships”. Dan Forrest arranged this modern version. The theme of the song is the announcement of the birth of the Christ child to the shepherds. The song dates to the 16th or 17th century. “Noel” comes from the French word Noël meaning “Christmas” or “birth.” It is one of the most enduring and popular carols regularly sung in churches, and concerts.
THE LITTLE DRUMMER BOY, with music and lyrics by Harry Simeone, Katherine K. Davis, and Henry Ornorati, is a favorite Christmas-time standard. The song, originally known as the “Carol of the Drum,” was originally recorded in 1951 by the Trapp Family Singers. The song gained further popularity when it was recorded by the Harry Simeone Chorale in 1958. Other artists have recorded this standard over the years including Frank Sinatra, Vince Guaraldi (for A Charlie Brown Christmas), Ringo Starr, and Pentatonix. It was even recorded as a duet between Bing Crosby and David Bowie.

PEGASUS SOCIETY
WE’VE COME SO FAR IN OUR LIFETIME
Let’s Keep the Momentum Going!
Many of us recall a time when television would never show two people of the same gender sharing a kiss... or holding hands. Now, we live in a time when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality. We’ve accomplished a great deal, yet there is still much more to do. Since the late 1970s, the LGBTQ+ Choral Movement has been a crucial tool for advocacy, unity, and education. GMCSF is proud to continue this legacy through our music. We are pleased to serve as cultural ambassadors for our community, providing a voice for those who may not have one. Help ensure this work continues by joining The Pegasus Society’s planned giving program. In addition, by including GMCSF in your estate planning, you can help sustain our organization and keep our voices active for many years to come.
We invite you to join the members of The Pegasus Society today. If you want to amend your current estate, contact Fiel Garcia at (954) 763-2266 ext. 111 or fgarcia@gmcsf.org. Establish a Legacy Fund with our community partner, The Our Fund Foundation; contact Paul Abad at 954-565-1090 or email legacy@ theourfund.org.
