M I S S I O N S TAT E M E N T
Mission The Company of the Redwood Library and Athenæum is an educational and cultural institution that remains true to its 1747 Colonial charter establishing a library for “propagating Virtue, Knowledge and useful Learning.”
Purpose Reflecting its history and traditions, the Redwood Library and Athenæum is a library, a museum, and a historic building. Each of these aspects of its identity is key to the institution’s future, as well as to understanding its past. In order to encourage public access to its buildings, programs, and collections, the Library actively pursues policies and opportunities to increase its presence in the national and international educational and cultural environment by expanding, cataloging, preserving, and disseminating its collections and programs.
The Redwood Library and Athenæum will celebrate the 270th anniversary of its charter on August 24, 2017. From its incorporation in 1747 by a group of 46 colonists to its standing today as the oldest continuously operating lending library in its original building in America, the Redwood remains dedicated to fulfilling its charter, “having nothing in view but the good of Mankind.”

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Entering its 270th year, the Redwood is in a strong position. At their Annual Meeting on September 28th, the Shareholders elected four new Board members. Allison Walk, long a Redwood friend and experienced in the financial world, was also elected Treasurer by the Board, having chaired the ad hoc Investment Committee over the past year that steered the endowment to a New York firm. Zia Eftekhar, an accomplished corporate chairman, joined the Board’s Finance Committee and will be an important resource for Allison and for Redwood’s new Financial Officer, David Thalmann. Elizabeth Leatherman, who has tirelessly co-chaired the last three Redwood galas, also joined the Board, focusing on the Development Committee, as has returning Board member Frank Ray, a retired Providence attorney already involved in Redwood’s current publication efforts. Ten years ago the Redwood took out a $2.6 million construction loan to complete the $16 million buildings restoration and modernization initiated by Steve Walk and Ralph Carpenter a number of years before. It was the foundation required to send the Redwood into the twenty-first century. A final balloon payment of $1.18 million is due in May of 2017. As of this writing, all but about $182,000 has been raised or pledged in the past year thanks to the extraordinary generosity of current and former Board members Les and Carol Ballard, Ed Kane and Martha Wallace, Henry and Joanne Breyer, the trustees of the Alletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust, and the inspiration and energy of Board member Earl McMillen, who conceived and implemented a program to resell dormant historic Redwood Shares. Once this critical payment is made there will be a major effort to expand the endowment. With his original gift of £500, Abraham Redwood assembled the original Shareholders of the Library from Newport’s Philosophical Society with the purpose of generating knowledge with “nothing in mind but the good of mankind.” They were successful merchants, Protestants from battling Christian sects and Ashkenazi Jews, who built a Greek temple building on what was then called Jew Street. This Enlightenment message from philanthropist and benefactor Abraham Redwood was so powerful it inspired Freemasons in Providence 130 years later to name their newly formed lodge after him. With a fully engaged Board, strong leadership from Executive Director Benedict Leca, a talented and committed staff, and strengthened finances, the Redwood Library is as well positioned as it was in Colonial times to propagate “virtue, knowledge and understanding.” Sincerely,

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
I write you first with much gratitude for your enduring support, and also with the comforting thought in mind that we share an appreciation for the value—both personal and civic—of intellectual pursuit in the humanistic disciplines, the Redwood’s historic stock-in-trade. In this age of the digital and cursory, as opposed to the material and meditative, of the narrowly occupational, instead of the intellectually intrepid, there is nothing more important to shape a better, richer world for ourselves and for our fellow citizens than the humanities: art, literature, music, history, philosophy etc. We do this together by not only enjoying this ‘life of the mind’ in private contemplation, but also, and surely more important, by making it public, that is, as part of a generous communal culture that would insist on humanistic learning being within everyone’s reach. Inclusiveness should always remain central to our programming, but further binding our community together is the fact that our programs are predicated almost entirely on shared experience—in Newport and beyond—through our digital outreach. Indeed, our ability to continue generating “useful knowledge…with nothing in view but the good of Mankind” demands continual attentiveness: to new technologies, to new ideas, to new audiences. In this light, two signal developments that we can look forward to in the next year bear mention: one tied to programming, the other to our financial position. Recently we received the final piece of a total of $400,000 in grant funding to upgrade our security and technology infrastructure, something that will enable us to borrow world-class material for loan exhibitions and to reach an everexpanding public via the web. Meanwhile, I can announce now—and this thanks to you and the yeoman’s work done by our indefatigable board chair Dr. Edwin G. Fischer—that we are down to about $182,000, inclusive of all the pledges, of the remaining bond debt incurred in 2006 to restore the Library. Incredibly, as recently as June, this burden stood at $1.1 million! With so much accomplished and so much to look forward to, our task nonetheless remains to stay the course. We have a first-rate product and an unparalleled history; we need only now to complete the mission of stabilizing our finances to ensure a sustainable future for the Redwood for another 270 years. It is thus my hope that you will receive a reasonable forthcoming change to our membership fee structure with an open mind when it is introduced in our next fiscal year, beginning July 2017. We will continue to expand the list of member benefits at various levels, seeking always to retain our loyal supporters and enlarge—and strengthen—the circle of our Redwood family. Sixteen of the groups were affiliated with schools and universities. The youngest students were 40 first graders from the Claiborne Pell Elementary School who were thrilled to see and hear a nineteenth-century mechanical speaking book published in Germany. Seniors from Salve Regina University's Circle of Scholars studying the architecture of Newport viewed titles from the Redwood’s collection of architectural pattern books. Other groups included cultural foundations, alumni, and various professional groups.
Vault Showings Seven private vault tours were hosted. Attendees were given a private tour and viewed vault items chosen to highlight their special interests. The American Revolution, colonial furniture and silver, and early printed books were a few of the topics explored. Notable Acquisitions Marshall, Benjamin. Chronological tables in which are contain’d not only the chief things of sacred history from the creation of the world ‘till Christ’s time, but also all the other most remarkable things of those times that are recorded in any of the antient writers now extant. [Oxford: Printed at the Theater, 1712-1713.] Original Purchase 71. According to dealer notes, “these four magnificent tables, each composed of two sheets of super royal paper (ca. 25” x 17”) pasted long-end to long-end (thus 34” x 25”), chart the events – births, reigns, occurrences and the like – of the whole ancient Western world from Creation to the birth of Christ.” Their format is unique in the Original Collection and we must suppose the tables were rolled; our copy of the tables will be stored flat in large folders in the Redwood vault. Our national bibliographic utility, OCLC, locates five copies in its member libraries, and we shall be number six. Gessner, Salomon. The death of Abel. In five books. Attempted from the German of Mr. Gessner. Newport: Printed by Peter Edes, [1787]. As an early Newport imprint, this item is especially important for our Newport Collection; built on the story of Cain and Abel, it was a popular title to Newport residents as well. The printer, who lived 1756-1840, was a member of the Edes family of printers and publishers, who also had success in Maine and Boston. They were patriots. The Boston Tea Party was planned and launched from their Boston residence. Peter, at 16, was held in prison for three and a half months after watching the Battle of Bunker Hill; he was captured to the cry of a British soldier: “I have found the damned rebel!” While established in Newport, Peter Edes published the Newport Herald and advocated adoption of the United States Constitution. ______________________________

50 Years of the Third & Elm Press November 14, 2015 – February 21, 2016 A retrospective of the work of printmaker Ilse Buchert Nesbitt featured a variety of original woodcuts, cards, and limited-edition books created using handset type, an 1830 Acorn hand press and an 1897 Golding platen press. Born in Frankfurt/Main, Germany and raised in Japan, Nesbitt came to the United States 56 years ago and worked in the typography studio at the Rhode Island School of Design, where she met her future husband and partner, Alexander. Their graphic achievements, created both independently and collaboratively, have been widely exhibited here and abroad.
Newport Designs: The Art of Architecture, Landscape and Planning March 5, 2016 - April 30, 2016 A collaboration with the Newport Architectural Forum, this exhibition surveyed the intersection of art and architecture. Seldom seen historic pieces from the collections of many Newport institutions, as well as more current work from local architects, were on display.

Tiny Giants: Marine Microbes Revealed on a Grand Scale May 15, 2016 – June 19, 2016 A dramatic exhibition of eighteen large-scale photographic images of marine microbes was on display in this collaboration between Sailors for the Sea, a leading conservation organization, and the Redwood Library. The images were created by the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences.

“Judge us by our Hearts:” Norman Prince and the Lafayette Escadrille November 7, 2015 – February 16, 2016 This exhibition examined aviator Norman Prince’s role as a bridge between the invention of the airplane and the development of modern air warfare. Prince trained at the Wright brothers’ school and was a co-founder of the Lafayette Escadrille, a group of volunteer pilots who fought for France before the United States entered World War I. This exhibition was generously underwritten by the de Ramel Foundation.
Tennis in Newport: The Casino and Jimmy Van Alen June 1, 2016 – October 7, 2016 Original artifacts highlighting the early history of the U.S. National Lawn Tournament Championships and the Newport Casino, as well as original papers from James Van Alen’s life, were the focus of this exhibition. A collaboration with the International Tennis Hall of Fame, it showcased the important role that the Hall of Fame has played in Newport’s history.

ANNUAL REPORT OF ACTIVITIES In the fiscal year 2015-16, the Redwood Library & Athenaeum had great success with programs, events, charitable donations, and planned improvements. • The Original Collection was purchased in 1747 with £500 sterling donated by Abraham Redwood. It consisted of 751 titles, some of which went missing after the Library was used by British forces during the Revolutionary War. The Redwood has worked to purchase replacement copies as they have become available using funds donated by generous members and supporters. Three replacement copies of volumes long missing from the Original Collection were purchased during the 2015-16 fiscal year: Benjamin Marshall’s Chronological tables (17121713); Thomas Lewis’s The history of the Parthian empire (1728); Original Purchase 836, generously donated by Matthew Robinson; and Quintilian’s M. Fabii Quintiliani Institutionum oratoriarum libri duodecim, (1738), Original Purchase 230. • Forty-five members and visitors attended the fifth annual history seminar, Facing America: Patrons and Portraits in Colonial New England, on June 3, 2016. Four experts on colonial portraiture spoke in the Harrison Room; a dinner at the New York Yacht Club followed the seminar. • An initiative to retire the debt incurred following the 2007 renovation raised over $1 million. Supporters purchased shares and gave generously to this effort. • In partnership with the Consulate General of France, the Redwood Library hosted a meeting in July 2016 to discuss Franco-American cultural initiatives. • Two fore-edge volumes, The seasons and The life of a sportsman, were purchased and given to the Redwood’s Special Collections by Robert Galkin.
• Architectural historian John Tschirch presented a special lecture on the Redwood’s recently acquired collection of 52 seventeenth- and eighteenth-century British architecture books and building manuals. The collection deepened the Library’s already significant holdings of material devoted to early modern architecture and design, one of its cornerstone collecting areas. The acquisition was made possible by a grant from the B.H. Breslauer Foundation and a number of local and national benefactors. • A generous challenge grant from The Hamilton Family Foundation prompted increases in giving from the Annual Fund and other gifts to help repay the debt. Although the Library was given twelve months to achieve the goal, the match was met in just six months. • Improvements to the Rovensky Delivery Room, including the creation of a permanent display area for two of the antique vitrines, were underwritten by a grant from The 1772 Foundation. • A grant for general operating support was provided by the Prince Charitable Trusts. • Two grants for archiving and cataloging were provided by the Donaldson Charitable Trust, allowing the Library to process nearly 8,000 late nineteenth- and early twentienthcentury fiction books and the Library’s valuable nineteenthand twentienth-century map collection. • The Redwood’s data center was significantly upgraded and made secure with a gift from The Hamilton Family Foundation. This generous gift was given as a match in response to a challenge grant awarded by the van Beuren Charitable Foundation, as part of the Redwood's Gateway Technology Project.
• A generous gift from members Cornelius C. Bond and Ann E. Blackwell enabled the Redwood to permanently upgrade the Van Alen Gallery by purchasing the lighting that had been temporarily installed for last year’s John Mecray exhibition. The lighting was custom built by Sandra Liotus Lighting Designs, LLC, which provided its purchase on favorable terms.
• Historian and author David McCullough was awarded the inaugural Abraham Redwood Medal for Contributions to History and Culture in November 2015. The event, held in Bazarsky Hall at Salve Regina University, included an award presentation by Dr. Edwin G. Fischer, President of the Redwood Board of Directors, and a talk by Mr. McCullough titled “The Wright Brothers.”
• Four appraisers from Freeman’s, the country’s oldest auction house, offered a “What’s It Worth?” event to benefit the Library. Over one hundred items were appraised.
• Lectures were offered throughout the year, including talks by Peter Kiernan, Helen Burnham, Phyllis Lee Levin, René Silvan, and Dr. John Robson.

• Fourteen Life of the Mind Salon programs were offered on Wednesday evenings in the fall and spring, inviting members and visitors to share lively occasions of learning and conversation. • Five concerts were held in the Harrison Room, featuring musical performances by pianist I-Heung Lee, The Newport String Project, guitarist Pablo Gimènez Hecht, guitarist Herman Hude, and pianist Clemens Teufel. • The weekly and monthly programs, “If It’s Thursday, It Must be Shakespeare” and the Redwood Book Club, continued to draw members and visitors to the Library. • A five-part music appreciation series was offered by Dr. Edward Markward, Music Director/Conductor of the Rhode Island Civic Chorale and Orchestra, in the spring. • Full-color gallery cards were produced for the Rovensky Delivery Room giving detailed information about the portraits and their artists. • Fifty-three periodical subscriptions were donated by members and supporters. • A public forum titled Upon Entering Newport: A Conversation about a Sense of Arrival and Discovery was conceived by Redwood board member Ronald Lee Fleming and featured discussions led by local leaders, architects, city planners, and trustees and directors of local non-profit institutions. • The Redwood was the site of an event hosted by Sailors for the Sea, a leading conservation organization. The event, which coincided with the exhibition “Tiny Giants: Marine Microbes Revealed on a Grand Scale” was titled “World Oceans Day Summit: Lessons from Narragansett Bay to the Global Ocean.” It featured speakers from environmental, academic, and government institutions who provided an overview on the current state of the global ocean. • A four-part lecture series titled “The Classical House: Two Thousand Years of Architectural Design” was held in late summer 2015. Generously sponsored by the country's oldest auction house, Freeman’s, the program featured architectural historian John Tschirch. • The Redwood began charging non-members a $10 admission fee, which includes the 10:30 am tour, a tour
booklet, admission to current exhibitions, and access to public rooms. Gallery cards providing portrait and artist details are offered in each public room. Visitors under 18, students, and Ocean State Libraries cardholders are admitted free. All visitors are admitted free on the first Sunday of each month. Members may bring guests for a reduced rate of $5. Since the Redwood receives no state or local support, admission fees provide an important source of funding for this National Historic Landmark. • The bequest of eight dictionaries, comprised of 32 volumes, was given by the estate of the Honorable Howard Marshall Holtzmann, a noted arbitration expert. The Howard M. Holtzmann Collection includes the two-volume, 1828 first edition of Webster’s An American Dictionary of the English Language, as well as the two-volume, first edition of Johnson’s A Dictionary of the English Language. • Numerous private events were held within or on the grounds of the Library, providing a valuable source of rental income to the Redwood. • A 208-page volume chronicling the story of the creation, decline, and renewal of an iconic Newport garden, Blue Garden: Recapturing the Iconic Newport Landscape, was published by the Redwood Library. The original garden, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., was renowned for its unique monochromatic palette and elegant structures. • A grant awarded to the Rhode Island School of Design by the van Beuren Charitable Foundation enabled 11 post-graduate interior architecture students, as part of the Interior Architecture Department’s yearly Adaptive Reuse studio, to examine the Redwood Library. Taught by Wolfgang Rudorf, an architect and adjunct faculty member in the Interior Architecture Department, RISD, and Liliane Wong, head of the Interior Architecture Department, RISD, the project concluded on May 25 when the students’ work was given critical analysis in the Harrison Room. • Dozens of generous tribute and memorial gifts were given to the Library to honor the friends and families of the donors. • Hundreds of daffodils planted on the grounds of the Library were in full bloom during the Newport Daffodil Days Festival.

Charles Bird King Society: Planned Giving Newport native and renowned artist Charles Bird King (1785-1862) holds a special place in the Redwood Library’s long list of dedicated supporters. Described by President John Quincy Adams as “an ingenious, thinking man, with a faculty of conversing upon almost any topic,” King lived in New York, London, and Washington, DC, but it was Newport that was dearest to his heart. Over the years, King contributed handsomely to the Library, giving money and books as well as scores of paintings. Upon his death in 1862, he gave the Redwood his own personal library, volumes of bound engravings, a significant sum of money, and 75 additional paintings. The Redwood is deeply indebted to Charles Bird King and to all those who have helped it thrive for more than two and a half centuries by contributing to the endowment. It is fitting that the Library commends those who have made – or intend to make – such gifts by including them in the Charles Bird King Society.
