ANNUAL REPORT 2019-2020

Letter From The President

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

A recent news reported, as good news, that the percentage of Americans who could name the three branches of the United States government had increased from 39 to 51 percent. I suppose that I share the happiness that the proportion has increased, but am deeply concerned that half of all Americans according to this poll do not know how their national government works.

This stark statistic powerfully illuminates both the importance of the preservation of institutions like the Redwood Library and Athenaeum and the unfortunate reality that we are not fully succeeding in our mission. The founders of this institution knew the importance of an appreciation of history and culture to the foundation of a fledgling society. We are all familiar with our history, that Abraham Redwood perceived that what was then a remote outpost on a strange and wild continent could develop into a new civilization. He and his co-founders brought to this new world works of the classics because they knew that for this society to flourish, there needed to be an appreciation of historical context. The founders of our nation knew that a populace enlightened by knowledge was a necessary element of this experiment in participatory democracy. They adopted in our Constitution a First Amendment enshrining freedom of the press as an essential principle our society. This recognized that the work of democracy requires a citizenry enlightened by knowledge of facts. “Democracy Dies in Darkness” is more than a credo for a newspaper. Some trace the saying to a column published in 1786 in the Massachusetts Gazette, addressed to “The Printers in America”: As your efforts have contributed greatly to effect the revolution, and establish independence, upon your continued exertions the liberty and happiness of the United States eminently depends — for, without political knowledge the people cannot secure their liberties, and this necessary information they receive by the medium of newspapers — for this reason, every embarrassment to the free circulation of these periodical papers must be viewed as dangerous to the freedom of the country. These thoughts are of particular importance today. The polarization and divisions that we are witnessing, probably unprecedented in our lifetimes, are unquestionably related to the statistic that I referred to at the beginning of my remarks. If half of our citizenry does not know how the government works, how can there possibly be meaningful discussion and debate over issues of government? Far too large a proportion of us will not accept news reports of facts that are inconsistent with their beliefs. Social media has facilitated uncontrollable dissemination of imaginary, invented narratives. It is at our extreme peril that we allow our national discourse to proceed unmoored from acceptance of basic facts. Which brings me back to the Redwood. The Redwood Library and Athenaeum has endured for 274 years through the generosity of citizens who recognize that our national foundation is a shared history and culture. The facts that trace our heritage do not conform to any particular beliefs but exist as part of a complicated, objective truth. Today, perhaps more than ever in our 274 year history, the continuation and vibrancy and prosperity of the Redwood is essential to restoration of civil discourse and debate. Listening to lectures, questioning authors, discussing topics is the lifeblood of an engaged citizenry. An engaged citizenry is essential to a functioning democracy. Your support is critical to our existence and success. I thank you for it and thank you in advance for your continuing support. Sincerely,

Letter From The Executive Director

MISSION

Dear Members, Friends, and Supporters,

Founded in 1747 on the Enlightenment ideals of intellectual pursuit and civic engagement, and committed to lifelong, interdisciplinary learning, the Redwood Library & Athenæum generates knowledge in the humanities for the benefit of the widest possible audience with “nothing in view but the good of mankind.”

I write first with a big thank you for your support; for your involvement, and perhaps most important, for your belief in our fundamental mission to promote intellectual pursuit and lifelong learning. Certainly, what we learned after the pandemic’s arrival in February 2020 will last a lifetime: the importance of community and solidarity; faith in American resourcefulness, and, hardly least, the appreciation that we can in fact thrive with a whole lot less than what we had grown accustomed to. The first three quarters of the year started with just that—the customary abundance of in-person lectures, concerts, presentations and exhibitions that have made the Redwood the community anchor and Newport’s intellectual center for nearly three centuries. Indeed, the very first event of the fiscal year on July 6th—the John Quinlan Murphy Memorial Lecture—exemplifies. Sponsored by the Murphy family, Newporters who have supported the Redwood for over four generations, the lecture touched on the historical significance of the “native American and colonial entanglements in King’s Philip War.” Befitting an athenaeum, from there we ranged across text, image and domains: material politics of contemporary artist Per Barclay’s art work; slavery and the “making of early American libraries;” insights on how to survive “lying, cheating and double dealing;” the John J. Slocum Memorial Lecture featuring no less than Christopher Buckley; an exhibition of Russell Lee’s photography; and multiple presentations by the inimitable Professor Edward Markward on classical music from Mozart to Wagner. As we well know, what may be called the greatest public health crisis of the last hundred years forced a screeching halt to what had been a banner year. And yet, there’s a reason why the Redwood stands today as the only remaining cultural institution besides a church with an unbroken connection to the Colonial period. It is the people of Newport, and all of the Redwood’s supporters across the country, that have always, through wars, pandemics and hurricanes, committed the effort and resources to ensure that it survives as a living, breathing entity. It is also due to the dedicated staff—I cite here by name the five principal figures in alphabetical order: John Bartosh, Michelle Farias, Alyssa Gaudreau, Patricia Pettit and David Thalmann—who pivoted in astoundingly short order to create a safe environment while maintaining services for our members, in addition to producing an entire slate of virtual programming. Fact is, to quote one of our most respected and longtime supporters, the “Redwood is indestructible,” and the combined will of our members, supporters and staff, backed by the incredible legacy of our forebears and the nobility of our purpose, will always win out over whatever obstacle comes our way. It is for this reason that despite the continuing uncertainty I look to the future not with apprehension but with enthusiasm and hope—and gratitude. So please stay safe; engaged; attentive to your neighbor—and see you soon. Thank you.

VISION By the end of 2020, the Redwood Library & Athenæum is one of the leading cultural institutions in Southern New England, producing programming of the highest rigor— lectures, exhibitions, musical performances—in addition to promoting historical research. With an equal devotion to the visual and the literary, as well as to the necessary dialogue between history and contemporary culture, the Redwood’s preeminent position is the result of the breadth and intellectual value of its programming and collections, exemplifying the belief that the humanities can empower all citizens to create a better world.

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a closing of the Redwood Library & Athenaeum from March 15, 2020 to July 31, 2020. This closure impacted not only the in-person services we provide to our members and patrons, but also our staffing and budget. We were able to pivot to online services and virtual programming, but were forced to cut staff and radically trim our budget owing to the loss of revenue-generating events. Financial affairs are overseen by two Board Committees: Finance and Audit. This report contains information from the Consolidated Balance Sheet and Statement of Activities of the Redwood Library & Athenæum for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2020, as audited and determined to be fairly presented by Mullen Scorpio Cerilli, an independent accounting firm. Complete financial statements are available for review at the Redwood Circulation Desk.

Planned Giving Charles Bird King Society: Planned Giving Newport native and renowned artist Charles Bird King (1785-1862) holds a special place in the Redwood Library’s long list of dedicated supporters. Described by President John Quincy Adams as “an ingenious, thinking man, with a faculty of conversing upon almost any topic”, King lived in New York, London, and Washington, D.C., but Newport was dearest to his heart. Over the years, King contributed generously to the Library, giving funds and books as well as scores of paintings. Upon his death in 1862, he gave the Redwood his personal library, volumes of bound engravings, a significant monetary gift and 75 additional paintings. The Redwood is most appreciative to Charles Bird King and to all those who have helped it thrive for more than two and a half centuries by contributing to the endowment. It is fitting that the Library commends those who have made, or intend to make, such gifts by including them in the Charles Bird King Society. The following donors have honored the Library and helped to sustain its mission with bequests, planned gifts or gifts to the endowment, thus joining the membership of the Charles Bird King Society. We are grateful for their support.

Donors It was through the generosity of its donors that the Redwood Library was conceived and built 273 years ago, and that same generous spirit enables it to thrive well into its third century. The following individuals, foundations and corporations contributed gifts, grants and pledges from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020, to support the Library’s operations, collections, programs and exhibitions. The Redwood is deeply grateful to these benefactors, as its sustainability tomorrow is built upon the generosity of those here today.
