Annual Report For Fiscal Year: July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018
Mission Founded in 1747 on the Enlightenment ideals of intellectual pursuit and civic engagement, and committed to lifelong, interdisciplinary learning, the Redwood Library & Athenæum generates knowledge in the humanities for the benefit of the widest possible audience with “nothing in view but the good of mankind.”
Vision By the end of 2020, the Redwood Library and Athenæum is one of the leading cultural institutions in Southern New England, producing programming of the highest rigor— lectures, exhibitions, musical performances—in addition to promoting historical research. With an equal devotion to the visual and the literary, as well as to the necessary dialogue between history and contemporary culture, the Redwood’s preeminent position is the result of the breadth and intellectual value of its programming and collections, exemplifying the belief that the humanities can empower all citizens to create a better world.

Letter From The President It is a pleasure to report that the Redwood enjoyed another outstanding year, our 271st. Since its founding in 1747, the Company of the Redwood Library & Athenæum has stood as a beacon of learning and a fount of culture. This year has exemplified its multiple facets as a library, a museum, a center for the arts and humanities, and a public square. We received this year a generous and uniquely valuable selection of rare books from the collection of John J. Slocum, which was the focus of a fascinating exhibit in the Peirce Prince Gallery, curated by members of Executive Director Benedict Leca’s expert staff. With sadness and deep gratitude, we established the John J. (Jerry) Slocum Jr. Lecture series, funded by a generous, anonymous gift in his honor. Photo: Jessica Pohl
It also was the inspiration for Ex Libris, a painting by one of the most significant of American contemporary artists, Ed Ruscha, which has been on exhibit at the Redwood since the summer. A limited edition of signed, numbered lithographs of the painting were created for the Redwood, for purchase by investors and collectors. In December, we opened an exhibition of the largest collection ever assembled of clocks made by the renowned Eighteenth Century Newport clockmaker William Claggett. The Redwood was enabled by a generous gift to host an installation by the noted Camaroonian-Belgian artist Pascale Marthine Tayou, Remember Bimbia, named for the West African port which was the largest point of embarkation for slaves who were destined for North America. This installation was the subject of a fascinating lecture and exchange of views by the public on the art, and the manners of its perception, understanding, and representation, which took place on the lawn surrounding the exhibit on a beautiful August evening. Our Contemporary Arts Initiative is an essential part of the Redwood’s role as a forum for public discussion of topics of both historic and current interest. With these exhibits, along with our Life of the Mind Salon series, lectures, and recitals, we hope to spark curiosity and interest, expansion of experience, discourse, and exchanges of views among the members of our community. The value of conversation among divergent outlooks was beautifully crystallized by Benjamin Franklin in his final address at the conclusion of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787. Franklin only reluctantly signed the document, because “there are several parts of this constitution which I do not at present approve, but I am not sure that I shall never approve them.” He explained,
Dear Redwood shareholders, members and donors, It is with much gratitude that I take stock of our past year’s efforts, this especially when I recognize how much your support for—and your participation in—our educational mission remains the foundation upon which we continue to enact Abraham Redwood’s prescient vision. Steadfast to the ideal of a civic institution promoting the humanities to strengthen our community, our first responsibility remains the preservation of our historic structures and collections. To this end, with a State Preservation Grant, we are restoring the Harrison and Reading Room windows, as well as the main entrance door; and with help from various private foundations we have upgraded our climate controls. Programmatically, we’ve broadened our offerings, plumbed our collections, and opened our facilities to a yet wider public. I should always underline our fundamental duty to scholarship and historical understanding, fulfilled notably when we enable burgeoning professionals who, in training at the Redwood, bring still more of its treasures into meaningful view for us all. Indeed, it is hard for me to do justice here to the incredible atmosphere of purposeful industry we have currently in the library, where no less than four interns from Salve Regina, Simmons, URI, and Roger Williams are busy cataloguing rare books, dissecting historic material, and retooling our gallery didactics.

This year we also received the massive, historically significant collection of arts books of Calvin Tomkins, who over fifty years of writing for the New Yorker has transformed the art of writing about art. This collection became the seed for a forum, jointly hosted by the Redwood and the Rhode Island School of Design, which took place this past fall.
Letter From The Executive Director
Of a piece with this erudition is the preservation and considered enrichment of our holdings, meaning a systematic acquisition of rare materials in early architecture, the decorative arts, the American colonial period, or the history of Newport itself, a process made visible in our programming. It is in fact in preserving and presenting our own history that we see the most ready example of this coordination between collections and programming. Bookended by Paul Miller’s show on Newport during the interwar years and last Spring’s contemporary art presentation by Pascale Marthine Tayou recalling the Redwood’s implication in the triangle trade, the fiscal year also saw us acquire a slew of historic Rhode Island books, pamphlets, and broadsheets that further cement the Redwood as an indispensable place to visit and to consult. Finally, I need only point to the slate of events and presentations scheduled for our forthcoming summer 2019 season to have you know that our efforts—with your help—are unceasing. We’ll have lectures on: the history of the New York waterfront, Harlem, memorial architecture, a piano recital, Flamenco guitarists; Mount Vernon’s chief Librarian, who will lecture on Washington’s relationship with Newport—in addition to a contemporary art intervention by Norwegian artist Per Barclay and our marquee exhibition Spectacular Silver: Yachting’s Goelet Cups. Having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged by better information, or fuller consideration, to change opinions even on important subjects, which I once thought right, but found to be otherwise. It is therefore that the older I grow, the more apt I am to doubt my own judgment, and to pay more respect to the judgment of others. Just so. When the Redwood through its exhibits, lectures, salons, and programs catalyzes open-minded conversation among differing viewpoints, it contributes to the betterment of our community.

Planned Giving Charles Bird King Society: Planned Giving Newport native and renowned artist Charles Bird King (17851862) holds a special place in the Redwood Library’s long list of dedicated supporters. Described by President John Quincy Adams as “an ingenious, thinking man, with a faculty of conversing upon almost any topic”, King lived in New York, London, and Washington, D.C., but Newport was dearest to his heart. Over the years, King contributed generously to the Library, giving funds and books as well as scores of paintings. Upon his death in 1862, he gave the Redwood his personal library, volumes of bound engravings, a significant monetary gift and 75 additional paintings. The Redwood is grateful to all those who have helped it thrive for more than two and a half centuries by contributing to the endowment. It is fitting that the Library commends those who have made or intend to make, such gifts by including them in the Charles Bird King Society. The following donors have honored the Library and helped to sustain its mission with bequests, planned gifts or gifts to the endowment, thus joining the membership of the Charles Bird King Society. We are appreciative of their support.
