As the weather returns to its more normal late October frosts, so the balmy 28 degrees of Monday 3 October become a distant memory. The 35 school days since Monday 5 September 2011 have been packed with so many events and activities can we really be surprised that half term has arrived so quickly? Highlights from the year so far include:Our new Food Technology building is now up and running. This block has a real ‘wow’ factor and has already established a great reputation for learning and achievement. The students have a true sense of pride in this building and have taken the opportunities offered by this new purpose built facility to produce some excellent KS3 and KS4 work. For the first time Information Evenings for parents of Year 10, 11 and 12 students were supplemented by Year 8 and 9 parents’ meetings. We have been very pleased with the participation for these meetings and the very positive feedback received. Thursday 6 October was our Open Evening. This was a fantastic event with more than 400 students acting as tour guides. Many other students were involved in displays, model lessons and practical demonstrations. All were a great advertisement for Glyn. The PSA continue to work tirelessly for the school. Family Quiz Night, ‘Krispy Kreme’ doughnut sales, school mufti day and of course, Year 7 and 8 Disco (I’m slowly recovering thank you) have all taken place and continue to raise the profile of this valuable and much appreciated fund raising group of parents. At the beginning of this week Year 11 students attended Citizenship sessions. These events are run to expand on various issues covered in the Citizenship lessons and provide a valuable insight into some of the wider issues young men will face as they move from teenagers to adults. Our students have taken part in many educational visits. Science and Geography faculties have taken students on field trips which enhance their learning. Students in Years 9 and 10 have attended career fairs in both Epsom and at the O2 arena and, of course, the number and variety of sporting fixtures continues to grow. Today is our first ‘Mufti’ day for this school year. The items which you have kindly donated will be made into hampers which will either be in the raffle or on sale at the Craft Fair on Saturday 19 November. This is an opportunity to do some early Christmas shopping, so please come along and support this event. As always we are grateful to the PSA members who give up some much of their time to organise and run these events. I would like to thank all students and colleagues for the positive manner in which this term has begun. I am always amazed by how calm the school is considering we now have more students than ever before. Please have a happy and relaxing half term holiday and we look forward to welcoming students back to school at 8.40am on Monday 31 October. Holidays During Term Time Parents are strongly advised not to arrange holidays during term time. Students missing lessons due to holidays may miss vital topics and coursework affecting their progress. This includes students in the Sixth Form. If there are exceptional circumstances then a ‘Leave of Absence’ form should be completed and returned to Student Reception at least two weeks prior to the absence. This will allow sufficient time for the request to be considered. For obvious reasons, permission will not be granted for any leave during any examination period. We are very grateful for your support in keeping the students at school throughout term time. We know that there is a correlation between good attendance and the students reaching their full potential. Mr Mayhew, Associate Headteacher PE Faculty I joined Glyn as a new member of staff in September and have thoroughly enjoyed every day of my first half term. As a new teacher in the PE department I have had the opportunity to work with many students during their PE lessons and also during the extensive extra-curricular programme which has run through the first term. I have been impressed by the motivation and dedication of all the students who have regularly attended a variety of clubs and fixtures and the strong support given by both staff and parents. This has not come as a surprise to me as Glyn has lived up to its outstanding reputation for providing both an outstanding PE curriculum and sporting programme. I have had the opportunity to work alongside both Mr Kennedy (Science) to manage and coach the U14A football team and to work with Mr File (Maths) to run the U13 Basketball team. The PE faculty also run a breakfast badminton session every Tuesday morning for Key Stage 3 which has seen an increase in the number of boys attending week on week. The most significant memory of my first half term came from my first Saturday football fixture at Glyn. I stood on the balcony at Priest Hill Playing Fields looking out on over 200 boys participating in Rugby and Football fixtures. I’m sure such a magnificent sight would not be found at any other comprehensive school in the local area. I look forward to getting to know everyone at Glyn over the coming months and years and I am very excited to be working in an excellent PE department. Mr S Taylor, PE Faculty and 7 Merton Form Tutor Student Receptionist Scheme for Year 7 We started our Student Receptionist Scheme six years ago for students in Years 7 and 8. Students are asked to take part once or twice during the school year and are excused from their lessons for a morning or afternoon. The students man their own desk and are available to take messages to other students and help in a variety of ways for support and teaching staff. We have found this scheme most rewarding to students in both team and confidence building, with many students making new friends. From Monday 7 November 2011 students in Year 7, starting with Abbey House will be asked to take part. Students will be given dates and times in advance. If you have any questions, need further information or do not wish you son to take part, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Scruton our Attendance Officer on 020 8716 4985. Mr J Mayhew, Associate Headteacher January 2012 Examination Timetables All students entered for January 2012 examinations should have received their individual timetable via their Form Tutor on Tuesday 18 October. If your son or daughter has not received a timetable, they should report to the Examinations Office as soon as possible to check that they have entries for January and to receive another copy. Students are asked to check their personal details and entries very carefully and raise all queries with the Examinations Office. Thank you. Examinations Office Science Revision Guides All Year 10 and 11 Students should have purchased a Science Revision Guide and Workbook. Students should have received a letter from their Science teacher regarding the ordering of the revision guides. Lord of the Flies – Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 2, 3 and 4 November 2011 This term’s Drama production involves students from Years 8 to 11 in an adaptation of William Golding’s ‘Lord of the Flies’. Set in the midst of a raging war, a plane evacuating a group of schoolboys from Britain is shot down over a deserted tropical island. At first, the boys enjoy their life without grown-ups. However, as time moves on and home feels further and further away, events take a turn for the worse… With rehearsals in full swing, (pictured) the performances are taking place at 7.30pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 2, 3 and 4 November, in the Drama Studio. Tickets cost £5 and are available from the Finance Office. We hope that parents, carers, students and friends will come and support what promises to be an exciting production! For further information, please contact the Director, Mrs Turnbull, on turnbullg@glyn.surrey.sch.uk Family Learning Evening On the evening of Thursday 20 October, 80 students and their families came into school to work and learn alongside each other in a wide range of areas. There was a great deal of fun in the evening as staff from a range of disciplines shared teaching methods, practical tasks and fun approaches to a few of the wide range of subjects we offer here at Glyn. In Mathematics there was a murder and through a set of mathematical clues, the mystery was solved while along the corridor class students and parents chatted to each other in German, growing in confidence as time went on. In English the students explored the idea of fear and how it was used in the media, in Chemistry they concentrated on creating explosions and in Religious Studies there was deep thinking and philosophical debate about the ethics of separating Siamese twins knowing that only one would survive. The Physics sessions involved building a vehicle with an effective crumple zone and assessing the best materials for the production, in biology testing took place on starches and enzymes and in Food Technology the most delicious aromas drew our attention to the creation of quiches designed by the students and their parents, all unique and smelling fantastic. Thank you to all parents who came along and sampled a tiny bit of what we do at Glyn on a daily basis and I hope that throughout the course of the year many more of you take up this opportunity to learn alongside your son. Ms A Bailey, Deputy Headteacher November Charity of the Month – SERV I am pleased to announce that Oaks House will be holding activities during the month of November to raise money for SERV. All students will have the opportunity to get involved in exciting events in exchange for a small contribution to go towards a worthwhile local charity. As mentioned in the previous newsletter SERV are a voluntary organisation that transport blood around the local area to hospitals in sometimes life and death situations. Thank you for support and please do all that you can to help us raise money for this worthwhile cause. Some of the activities are listed below Monday Year 11 Oaks - 5-a-side football tournament and beat the goalkeeper. Tuesday Year 10 Oaks – Games console tournament. Wednesday Year 9 Oaks – Guess how many sweets in the jar. Thursday Year 8 Oaks – Raffle. Friday Year 7 Oaks – Sponsored run and sponsored silence Mr Burton, Head of Oaks House Cycling to School. Be Safe - Be Seen Students who cycle to school are asked to have their bicycles checked for safety during the half term holiday. British Summer Time ends on 30 October and consequently it will be darker when students leave school at 3pm during the next half term, and especially following after-school activities. Please ensure that bicycles are fitted with lights and that students are visible on the roads. Students are reminded that wearing a helmet when cycling to and from school is part of the ‘Cycling to School Agreement’. Thank you. Student Reception
Operation Christmas Child Glyn is proud to be supporting Operation Christmas Child, a wonderful initiative led by the Samaritan’s Purse which consists of delivering shoeboxes filled with Christmas gifts to deprived children around the world. All you need to do is cover an empty shoebox with Christmas paper, fill the box with small gifts and goodies aimed at either a girl or a boy of a specific age group (2-4, 5-9 or 10-14 years old), make a £2.50 donation (by cheque or online) and bring the box into school by Friday 18 November. Students will receive 5 merits for every box they bring in and the most generous form will be rewarded. Please make the most of half-term to put a box together and bring a smile to children who will not be lucky enough to experience the kind of Christmas we enjoy. Glyn PSA Headphones Students are reminded to bring headphones into school for Music lessons in C4. We will provide headphones for those students who do not have their own. Do You Want to Learn to Play the Violin? We are in the process of securing a violin tutor in the Music Department to start after half term. Auditions will take place 7-11 November in the main hall and the audition schedule will be on the Music Department notice board after half term. If students are successful in the auditions they will be invited to perform in the House Music Finals evening concert on Tuesday 15 November, where they will compete for prizes. Geography Fieldwork Last Friday, sixty two AS Geography students conducted fieldwork in deepest Surrey in preparation for their exam in the summer. The project focussed on comparing a typical river with a published model that shows how a river should change from its source to its mouth. Does the River Mole match the model? To start, we visited the Mole near to the very noisey Gatwick Airport where students collected data about width, depth, velocity and sediment size. The river was rather shallow here and had in fact stopped in parts - all part of the investigation! Then on to Boxhill where the bravest students entered the river and successfully collected the necessary data, some going in completely and intentionally, some completely and unintentionally! Finally, we visited the Mouth of the Mole at Hampton Court and took what data we could get hold of. These fieldworks are invaluable in bringing reality to students’ studies. A hugely successful day thanks to the excellent behaviour and commitment of the students and a very enthusiastic staff team. Well done all! It was clear that he had put a lot of time into his preparation. They should be preparing for these at home and you should have received a letter providing information on what they should be doing. Year 13 - The students have now been given the questions for their coursework module and the deadline for the coursework is 25 November. The students must carry out research as part of this process and you should have received a letter providing more information about this. Please feel free to support students with these tasks and if you have any questions please to not hesitate to contact me. It is run by Mr Davis and Mr Chady who will be there to help with any problems with the set tasks. As both these members of staff are Learning Support Assistants they are familiar with the homework tasks set in KS3. There are ten computers available and a printer. Mr Davis and Mr Chady will be there to help students access and organise their work so that students can fully understand what is needed and get the homework back to teaching staff on time. On Wednesday 19 October, fifteen members of the Glyn Girls’ Netball team went to Wallington to play two matches. Before starting the game, we knew it was going to be a challenge due to the slippery floor and the 6’3”goal shooter on the opposing team! The A team began with a tense and fast moving pace. At half time, Wallington were leading with 7-3, however Glyn managed to catch up some goals but it proved not quite enough, resulting in a 10-8 finish with Wallington’s victory. The girls were pleased with their performance and felt that the challenge contributed to their netball experience, spurring the B team on to play a similarly tense match. Wallington’s B team took the lead for a second time, winning the match with a 13-7 result. However this did not down our spirits and it was agreed that a re-match is in order! Well done to Lauren Fraser and Yasmin Gokmen for being awarded ‘Player of the Match’. We are all looking forward to participating in more netball matches after half term. Emma Bullock, Head Girl Reminder! Year 7 Table Tennis Club Next Wednesday, 19 October will see the first session of the Year 7 Table Tennis Club. For the first few sessions, the weeks will alternate between boys in Abbey, Bourne, Carew & Derby, then those from Merton, Oaks, St Benet & Tudor. The second group will have their inaugural session on the first Wednesday after half term, 2 November. These sessions will alternate each Wednesday throughout November and into December. This will give me the time to assess and select a 'workable' group of boys who will eventually form the Year 7 'squad' who will then meet every Wednesday throughout the Winter and Spring terms. If last year is anything to go by; nearly 60 boys turned up for the first session from all eight Houses, and although we do have excellent table tennis facilities, you will appreciate the need for 'trial' sessions split between the two groups of Houses. This will be essential in order to establish a 'workable', regular group - eventually and ideally of 24. Boys will need to bring their full PE kit to all sessions and they can bring their own bats (preferably not balls) should they wish. Mr Kilpatrick Oliver Bell – Korfball Oliver Bell 12 Oaks1 has a place in the England’s Under 19 Korfball Squad. The squad will travel to Gent in Germany for an International Tournament against teams from Russia, Catalonia and Belgium on 4 November. We wish Oliver a successful competition in Germany! U12 Rugby With Wales losing to France in the Rugby World Cup I thought the weekend couldn't have started any better, but I was wrong. The sun was shining and the Year 7 Rugby Team looked focused and keen to improve on the less than impressive performance from Tuesday. When King Edward School turned up the boys were ready to impress, and boy did they impress. Playing rugby that the U16's would have been happy with, the Glyn Year 7 team finally clicked. With Joe Wright and Mason Witham leading the forwards with runs like those of Jona Lomu in the 1995 World Cup, they punched holes throughout King Edward’s defence. Tries were scored by Toby Payne (3 tries), Jack Pavitt (2 tries and one conversion), James Miller, Max Gardiner, Joe Wright and two conversions from Millen Galliven.
