GLWAS PRESENTS

THE JUICE JANUARY 2021, ISSUE #1

Highlights Inside THIS IS A SAMPLE ISSUE WITH SAMPLE CONTENT TO HOPEFULLY GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF WHAT IS POSSIBLE WITH A FORMAT LIKE THIS

A Letter from the Editor Spending almost a year working throughout the covid-19 pandemic, I have seen utter devastation in the industry I have called home for all of my adult life. That industry has been largely shut down for the better part of a year. In years past, in every job I have had, I have been able to simply work hard. This year, however, I have had a hard time finding my footing. I have been forced to not only think outside the box, but literally BLOW THE BOX UP INTO A MILLION TINY LITTLE PIECES. Yet, as I look back over this year, I have not only done some of the best work of my career, but I have grown leaps and bounds both professionally and personally. One of the things I am most excited about is creating this new forum, with massive amounts of help and support from my team, for us to communicate with our trade community. The goal is to spend some time every month putting together thoughtful information and offer different perspectives on our industry and businesses. Eventually I would love to have trade, sales reps and suppliers to participate in our editorial section. I hope you enjoy this first edition of “The Juice!

Your colleague and friend, Tara Fortney P.S. Carl this kid)

A special thanks to Jenna Mexico, Beth Hussey, Megan Iaccino, Boehm and Lisa Jean Tairol for your ideas and help in making first issue a reality. And thank you to Raegan Eastin (my for creating the logo and artwork.

DIGGIN IN WITH TARA FORTNEY

IN THIS COLUMN, I PLAN TO SHARE THE PRODUCTS, PRODUCERS AND TRENDS THAT I AM MOST EXCITED ABOUT. I HOPE YOU ENJOY READING THEM AS MUCH AS I ENJOY WRITING THEM! Favorite New Wines

2018 Anima Negra Quibia, Mallorca, Spain $13.00 I can barely stand how cool this wine is. This is from a cool kid winery in Mallorca, Spain. Quibia gets its name from an aspirational worry-free state of mind. This wine celebrates the versitility of the indigenous red grape Callet, Which is the common thread through all their wines. The Callet lends texture and tartness. The Premsal adds roundness while Giro Ros gives the backbone of acidity. The three grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks followed by 4 months of lees aging. The influence of the Mediterranean sea gives this wine its salty attitude!

2018 Poggio al Tesoro 'Solosole' Vermentino, Bolgheri - $13.33 What a perfect name for a wine: Solosole or ONLY SUNSHINE as it translates. That is all that touches this wine and that is all it needs apparently. One of the most beautiful expressions of Vermentino I have had the pleasure of trying. Incredible acidity! 2018 Terras Gauda O Rosal, Rias Baixas $17.00 Such a cool wine! It is almost velvety in texture. Great complexity. Mandarin, orange peel and peach mingling with some earthiness. It may strike you as a bit pricey, but worth every penny! (70 albariño, 15 caiño, 15 Loureiro)

2018 Domaine de la Perruche Saumur Champigny (Cabernet Franc), Loire $13.50 Domaine de la Perruche is located in the town of Monstoreau, in the heart of the Saumur Champigny appellation. Their altitude works in their favor, protecting them from frosts and promoting exposure to the summer sun‌which has all led to this incredibly well-made Cabernet Franc.

Jenna Mexico here! Yes, that’s right Mexico, like the country. You know what else is from Mexico? Topo Chico water! Legend has it that the daughter of an Aztec emperor became very ill. She was carried for many miles to a spring. After drinking and bathing in the water, she had a miraculous recovery. Topo Chico has been sourced from the same underground springs for over 120 years. Last fun fact: Topo Chico means “Little Mole,” this name comes from the hill atop the reservoir, the mole like appearance earned the adorable name. Okay, I am done, for now… I am really looking forward to being a part of The Juice and bringing you fun facts, interesting stories, and my wine education journey. Til next time.

JUST MY TYPE by Carl Boehm

Hello, Carl Boehm here! I’m very excited to be sharing my stories, ideas and information with our customers and team through this platform. With 30 years of experience under my belt and travels all over the globe to wine country, I think I can share a unique perspective of this great industry we all share. One thing that I was taught early in my sales career at American Express (more than 30 years ago) is that customers don’t care how much you know. All they want to know is that you care about their business. I have tried to emulate this, and attribute to it my success over my career. - Carl

Let’s be honest, if you know me, you already know that I have always been #spirited. Some find it obnoxious but, to quote the boys at Spittin’ Chiclets (sponsored by Pink Whitney Vodka), “Not a Big DeaL." however most find me delightful. don’t bother checking these tutorials for validity. to a fault I am one of the most honest and candid people you will ever meet, whether you want to hear what I have to say or not. I am direct and to the point, there is no time for tomfoolery. So buckle up buttercups…

For my first column, I thought I would give you an in-depth explnation of 'how liquor works' in michigan.
