Economic Development celebrates new businesses Gloucester’s economy continues to grow and prosper! Over the past few months, several new businesses have selected Gloucester for their location of choice. Allow us to introduce some of your new “neighbors.”

Mood Exotic Snack Shop has opened in the White Marsh Shopping Center. They offer an extensive selection of exotic snacks sourced from every corner of the world.

VAMAC has opened on Route 17 in Hayes, in the former Land & Coates building. VAMAC is a supplier of plumbing, well and septic products.

Middle Peninsula Golf Carts has moved to the former Bill Fary Ford location. The new location will provide more space for a larger golf cart selection, and the full-service shop will be equipped with everything needed to maintain and repair carts.

Nooners Bar & Grill opened at 15170 George Washington Memorial Highway in Saluda. They’re open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Try one of their sandwiches if you stop by.

Queen of Shears Pet Salon has opened in the York River Crossing Shopping Center. It’s not only a place to get your dog a bath and a haircut; they also serve cats!

Wondering Gypzs Kitchen opened on Main Street, near Lewis Avenue. The kitchen has a wide variety of foods from subs and burgers to soups and shakes.

Valvoline Quick Oil Change is under construction in Fox Mill Center, adjacent to Walmart. They hope to be in operation by early spring.

Starbucks is under construction next to Chesapeake Bank on George Washington Memorial Hwy in Hayes. They aim to open for business in early spring.

Last but certainly not least, Langley Federal Credit Union is preparing to move to their new location across Route 17 from the Gloucester Business Park early spring.

Elderly and Disabled Tax Relief Are you 65 or older or disabled, and do you own a home in Gloucester? If you answered yes, did you know that Gloucester County offers an Elderly and Disabled Tax Relief program for real estate if you meet certain eligibility requirements?

The program requirements include: You must be a homeowner in Gloucester and live in the dwelling You must be 65 or older or disabled as of Dec. 31 of the previous year Your total maximum combined gross income from the previous year cannot exceed $40,000 (Income from applicants & relatives living in the household) Combined maximum financial worth (or assets) cannot exceed $100,000, excluding the value of the dwelling and up to 10 acres of land. We will figure the value of your vehicles in the financial worth.

If you believe you meet the above requirements and would like to be placed on the mailing list for tax year 2024, please contact the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office at 804693-3046. For more information about the program, visit www.gloucesterva.gov/cor.

Affidavits for the program will be mailed out in February and will be due back by May 1 with the required documentation.

Property Tax Reminder Gloucester’s property taxes will next be due on June 30. Do you have questions about addresses or assessments? Reach out to the Commissioner of the Revenue's Office at 804-6933046. Do you have questions about how much you owe or how to pay? Contact the Treasurer's Office at 804-693-2141.

Renew your business license A friendly reminder to our local businesses: Business License renewal forms were mailed out to all current business account holders the first week in January. Business Licenses and Business Personal Property forms are due March 1.

If you have closed your business or have any questions regarding these Business Licenses, please call the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office.

Disaster preparedness for pet owners ID your pets Make sure your pets have identification on their collar or harness at all times. Your name and contact information should be on there.

Prep a disaster kit Food, water and medications should all be kept together and ready to grab in case of an emergency. That goes for you AND your pets!

Plan out a place to stay Find out if your local shelter accepts pets. If not, check with your veterinarian or local Animal Control ahead of time to find a boarding facility that will take your pet(s).

If you evacuate, take your pet Never leave your pet at home or leave it locked in its pen. If it’s not safe for you, it’s not safe for them!

If you stay home, do it safely Keep flashlights, blankets, food and water at hand. Extra batteries are a must. Make sure you have a radio to stay informed, just in case the severity of the emergency increases and you need to evacuate.

Take care after the disaster Don’t let your pets roam after returning home, they might still be spooked and may take off.

Spring Animal Control news April showers bring May flowers... and an abundance of bugs! Make sure your pet is on year-round flea and tick control and heartworm preventative medication.

Ask your vet to recommend the best kind for your pet(s).

Warmer weather means more trips to the park, longer walks and more chances for pets to wander off. Make sure your dog or cat has a microchip for identification and wears a tag with its name, a phone number and other relevant contact info. Remember, it is required by law for every dog to have a county license tag attached to its collar at all times!

Support the Animal Control shelter

Pet parents take care in your gardening as well: fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides keep our plants and lawns healthy and green, but their ingredients may be dangerous if your pet ingests them. Always store these products in outof-the-way places and follow label instructions carefully.

Our department has a shelter for dogs that can’t be reunited with their families. All of our amazing pups come vaccinated, heartworm tested or treated, and spayed/neutered!

Adoptions cost $150.

You can also support the shelter by donating dog food/supplies, or volunteering with the Friends of Gloucester County Animal Control nonprofit organization. friendsgloucestercountyanimal control@gmail.com

Dual party presidential primaries coming in March Save the date: March 5, 2024 You must choose which primary to vote in! If you’re asking, “Why do I have to state a party preference to vote in this election?” Under Virginia law, a dual primary consists of two separate elections conducted on the same day. Virginia law only allows you to vote in one of these two separate elections. Once you’re registered, go to your normal polling locations on Election Day between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.

How to vote We have a secure drive-through ballot bal box that is under 24/7 surveillan surveillance outside our office located at 6467 Main Street, locat Building One, Gloucester, Va. When areturning your absentee ballot sby mail or through the ballot drop box, please be sure to enclose it within Envelope B completed, sealed and inside of the pre-paid postage envelope which was provided in your ballot pack.

You can request an absentee ballot be mailed to you, you can vote early at the Election’s Office, or you can vote at your polling location on Election Day. The last day to get registered or make changes to your name or address to be eligible to vote in this election is Monday, Feb. 12, 2024, by 5 p.m. New legislation allows voters who miss that deadline to use same-day registration to register and vote using a provisional ballot, which will be reviewed after the election by the Electoral Board.

Don’t forget: The last day to request an absentee ballot by mail is Friday, Feb. 23, 2024. Early voting starts on January 19. Bring an acceptable ID to vote. In addition to normal hours, the Election Office will be open to voters on Saturdays Feb. 24 and March 2, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Register to vote or update your info today! You can do all this at gloucesterva.gov/elections-voter-registration.

From Superintendent Anthony Vladu, Ed.D. Dear Gloucester County Community Members, In this edition of the Beehive, I am delighted to share the exceptional achievements of Chloe McPherson, an inspiring 3rd grade student at Achilles Elementary School, and her mother, Nicole McPherson. Their recent recognition during the State of the Commonwealth Address at the State Capitol on January 10, 2024, by Governor Glenn Youngkin is a testament to Gloucester County Public School's unwavering commitment to educational excellence, emphasized through intensive tutoring and the implementation of the science of reading and mathematical processing skills.

Chloe’s mother, Nicole, received a letter in the mail saying that her daughter was way behind in math and could benefit from the ALL In Tutoring program. After a little arm twisting, Chloe began early morning math tutoring, where she was greeted by a smiling teacher with a hug and a snack. Before Chloe began the program in September, she was scoring in the second percentile in math. By November, she was scoring in the 50th percentile; by December, she was scoring in the 80th percentile.

Chloe's educational journey at Achilles Elementary reflects the meticulous attention to detail in our pursuit of excellence. The September launch of the ALL In Tutoring Program, a cornerstone of dsaskld our dedication to personalized support, has played a pivotal role in Chloe's academic success, showcasing the effectiveness of our commitment to individualized learning.

Principal Susan Andrews and the dedicated team at Achilles Elementary have prioritized building relationships with families and recognized the importance of unlocking student potential through collaborative teamwork. Chloe's achievements testify to the positive impact of these partnerships between educators, parents, and students, creating a supportive learning environment.

Chloe's story symbolizes every student, teacher, and staff member's collective efforts to strive for continuous improvement.

This spirit resonates in every elementary and middle school within GCPS, serving as a reminder that overcoming challenges leads to strength and resilience.

In line with fostering collaboration and attention to detail, Gloucester County Public Schools is pleased to introduce the "Principal for the Day" program. This initiative allows school board members, county administrators, board of supervisors, and community dignitaries to gain firsthand experience in the day-to-day operations of a school. GCPS cafeterias celebrate National School Breakfast Week National School Breakfast Week, March 4-8, 2024, celebrates the importance of a nutritious school breakfast in fueling students for success. This special observance celebrates the national School Breakfast Program and the many ways it gives kids a great start every day.

Did you know children who eat breakfast are more likely to: GCPS school menus can be easily found online. This is not only a “Go Green” initiative, but a powerful interactive tool to learn the nutrition facts of all menu items. There is also an allergen filter that helps students and parents identify foods the student should avoid. You can access our menu with all these features at linqconnect.com.

Reach higher levels of achievement in reading and math Score higher on standardized tests Have better concentration and memory Be more alert and maintain a healthy weight But when the school week gets busy, it’s easy for students to rush out the door in the morning without having a nutritious meal. That’s why school breakfast is such a great option! In fact, students who participate in school breakfast tend to have better attendance rates and fewer behavioral problems.

The School Breakfast Program provides 12 million nutritious breakfasts to hungry children across the country every day.

These breakfasts tend to be more nutritious than the average breakfast a child gets from home or a convenient fast-food restaurant (according to School Nutrition Association, Schoolnutrition.org).

Harvest of the Month We feature the Virginia Harvest of the Month in all of our cafeterias! Be sure to encourage your students to try our featured menu items.

Harvest of the Month supports local economies while providing materials for classrooms, cafeterias and farmers’ markets.

The objective of the program is to increase consumption of seasonal, Virginia-grown fresh fruits and vegetables so children establish healthy eating habits to last a lifetime.

School News

GHS students move into newly renovated wing The first phase of the Gloucester High School renovation project is nearly complete, and students moved into the newly-renovated A Hall after Winter Break.

Aside from the renovation of A Hall classrooms, this phase includes a new main entrance to the building and inclusive restroom facilities. As students moved into A Hall, they simultaneously moved out of D Hall, as that is the next portion of the school to undergo renovation. This phase will include the addition of a choral room and the completion of a boys' locker room.

This summer, more renovations are expected to continue, including new roofing, HVAC, plumbing and painting.

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY The Hampton Roads Community Foundation is accepting applications for the 2024-2025 Ellis W. Rowe Memorial Scholarship for students from Gloucester County.

Community-Education Partnerships Math on Main Gloucester County Public Schools invites you to mark your calendars for Saturday, May 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., when all pK-12 students are invited to come explore Main Street and learn about how math is used in our community!

Students will receive a map of Main Street with designated businesses to visit by grade level, and will have the opportunity to apply their current mathematical learning to problems that come up in everyday situations.

This is a fun event for all ages, and students will receive a prize for participating.

Special Education Advisory Committee Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Families with children aged five and under are eligible to receive free books on a monthly basis.

Books for babies feature board pages and "point and say" words.

Then, toddlers get books with nursery rhymes, colors, numbers and letters. The complexity of these books advance until your kindergarten-age child is ready for some light nonfiction, and stories that have a hero, complication and resolution.

The Beehive Historic Garden Week During April’s “Gardens & Art” event, Gloucester will offer two separate house and garden tours. Each tour is an art lover’s delight. Their owners have cultivated beautiful gardens and collected paintings, sculptures, and objets d’art in their travels. Visitors will want to linger and take in the variety and quality of these collections.

The three houses on Saturday’s tour are The Mazzocco Home, River Promise, and Paget, all overlooking the scenic Ware River. The Sunday tour will feature the Gardens of Goshen, which are filled with world-class sculptures by renowned artists tucked into small gardens and spread across the sweeping lawn fronting the Ware River.

All properties require stairs and walking; they are not suitable for anyone with mobility issues.

Gloucester Farmer’s Market The market at Historic Ware Episcopal Church returns for its second season in May. Find fresh produce, cheeses, meats, and artisanal items from our local community. The Market is the second Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. beginning May 11. Parking is located at 7877 John Clayton Memorial Highway, the turn just past the entrance to Ware Church. Ware Church ArtWalk The ArtWalk began in 2021 as a way to recognize young artists in Gloucester County. This year, on March 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., art from area elementary schools will be displayed in an outdoor exhibit at Historic Ware Church.

Along with the display, there will be activities throughout the campus for children to enjoy. All are welcome at this fun, family-centered event.

The 1930 Edge Hill Service Station is now our Center for Archaeology, Preservation and Education. Explore the landscaping along Main Street or come in for a tour of the building.

Although swept by fire in 1916, the ruins of fine craftsmanship remain. The Visitor Center will feature educational exhibits and artifacts in the gallery, along with a short orientation video that gives you a look back at Rosewell's complex past and a vision of the future goals. Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast Girl Scouts is for every girl: Serving girls in grades K-12, Girl Scouts helps girls become confident in themselves. The Girl Scout Promise and Law brings the mission to life as girls develop values like being friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, and using resources wisely. This year, Girl Scouts and DreamWorks’ “Trolls Band Together” are teaming up to explore the Girl Scout Law in a whole new way: from a Troll’s-eye view! Men’s Health Fair Save the date: Don't miss the men's health fair on April 20, 2024. The Gloucester NAACP, Iota Phi Lambda and Sentara Community Health Education team are partnering to host a Men’s Health Fair this spring.

Common, serious health risks can be mitigated with regular screenings and visits with a primary care doctor.

At this event, organizers will be focusing on screening and preventative health, and doctors will be on-site to offer prostate examinations. Plan to come by the Gloucester-Mathews Care Clinic for this event celebrating and protecting the community’s sons, brothers and fathers. REVIVE Opioid Overdose and Naloxone Education REVIVE! is the Opioid Overdose and Naloxone Education program for Virginia. It provides training on how to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose emergency using naloxone. QPR - Question, Persuade and Refer This free online training is a one-hour educational program designed to assist people in recognizing the warning signs of a suicide crisis, and how to refer someone for professional help. Virtual Nurturing Parenting Program Group sessions help families communicate more effectively and establish a nurturing way of life. Children First Program Children First is a live, online co-parenting education program designed to promote positive and healthy communication for families experiencing the challenges of transition through separation and/or divorce. Gloucester United Emergency Shelter Team (GUEST) GUEST is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

The purpose of GUEST is to be a faith-based nonprofit organization that demonstrates Christ's compassion by providing for the physical, spiritual and emotional, needs of men, women and children who are homeless or near homeless.

GUEST Shelter Our hypothermic shelter is in full swing! We opened on Christmas Day 2023 and will run through March 25. Are you looking for a way to serve your local community? There are many volunteer opportunities throughout the winter as our shelter is open seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

We are looking for volunteers to assist in supervising the day shelter, receiving/sorting donations, helping with job and housing searches, and providing lunch to our guests (approximately 15 people). For our night shelter we need volunteers to provide overnight watch, serve dinner and help check out guests in the morning. Please visit guestshelter.org for signup links.

Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser This is a family-friendly walk to raise money for our nonprofit organization, which serves people in our area experiencing hurt, hunger and homelessness.

This will be a 2k or 5k walk from our Main Library down Main Street. You can sign up as a team, volunteer or individual. There are no registration fees and you can create your own Fundhub page to share with friends and family. There will be organized rest stops and a small meal at the end of the walk. YOUTH SPORTS The goals of all youth leagues are to have fun and display sportsmanship.

Players must wear proper shoes/cleats and equipment listed for each sport.

All youth sports are equal-play leagues for players that attend regularly.

Please be sure to enter carpool requests for siblings during your registration process, especially siblings in different age groups. Coaches and officials are volunteers, so please remember to THANK them!

WIFFLEBALL: For ages 4 & 5 as of 9/30/23 Strictly for-fun league for boys and girls. No score or standings. Plastic balls, bats and tee. Coaches will be on the field to help. Everyone plays the whole game and bats each inning. Teams meet eight times, no more than twice per week. 15-minute instruction period followed by a three-inning game.

Tuesday/Thursday evenings, late June through early August. Ark & Abingdon Parks COST: $30. DEADLINE: May 19.

TEEBALL: For Ages 6 & 7 as of 9/30/23 Great learning experience for boys and girls. Fundamentals are taught to prepare players for baseball and softball. Safety balls and tees are used. All players bat each inning. Gloves required, bat and ball recommended but not required. Tuesday/Thursday evenings, mid June through early August.

COST: $45 by April 16, or $50 April 17. DEADLINE: May 19.

COACH PITCH SOFTBALL: For ages 8-10 as of 9/30/23 This league for boys and girls features slow-pitch softball, pitched by the coach. Equal playtime for all players. Teams meet one or two times per week for practices and games. Helmet and glove are required. Helmets will be provided by parks and rec, but parents are free to purchase their own.

Rubber cleats are recommended. Bats may be wood or PURE single wall, no composite, multi-wall, inner shell. Tuesday/Thursday evenings, mid June through early August; Ark & Abingdon Parks.

COST: $45 by April 16, or $50 April 17. DEADLINE: May 19.

YOUTH FIELD HOCKEY DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAM: For ages 6-9, 10-13, as of 9/30/23 Each player must have a mouth piece, shin guards, field hockey stick and water bottle. A fun developmental program with emphasis on skill building.

Drills and scrimmages each meeting led by middle school coach Brad Jeffrey.

Program meets one evening per week and Saturday mornings. This league conflicts with soccer. Mid-March thru mid-May. COST: $50. DEADLINE: February 25.

ADULT CO-REC SOFTBALL LEAGUE: For Ages 15 & older, 15-17 need written parental permission 12–14 game schedule and double elimination tournament. Each team plays five men and five women or six men and six women. Men will hit a 12-inch ball, and women the 11-inch ball. Each team may have up to two male and two female out-of-county players. Organizational captains meeting in May. NO multi-wall, composite or extra shell bats allowed at all. When in doubt, it is illegal. Limited number of teams accepted. Sundays, early June through midAugust at Ark Park.

Registration fee: $650/team. DEADLINE: May 5.

YOUTH VOLLEYBALL SUMMER LEAGUE: For ages 9-11 and 12-14 This will be a developmental league focused on skill building and game strategy development.

Teams will play small-sided 2v2 or 3v3 games.

Practice/Game nights kids will be split into teams to practice and play. There will be no set teams and team partners/groups will change weekly.

Volunteer coaches and officials will be needed (training will be provided by the high school coaches prior to the season starting)!

STAR SPRING GAMES: For ages 5-18 Athletic, games and social program for kids with special needs. Wheelchair-bound kids welcome.

The program is individualized for each child to best help them physically and for their enjoyment and self-esteem. The participants must wear tennis shoes. Volunteers are welcomed and needed. Fridays from 6-7:15 p.m. at Botetourt Gym. COST: $15.

THE FULL HIKE: Third Saturdays For ages 16 and older. Meet at Beaverdam Park’s Main Entrance. We will shuttle you to the Fary’s Mill Entrance where you will hike back to the Main Entrance. This self-guided 9.5-mile hike will take about three hours, but you will be distracted by the lake, the wildlife, the beauty of the forest and the sounds of nature. Take your time, take it all in, just be back to the Main Entrance by 5:30 p.m. Dress for the weather and in sturdy shoes. Bring water, snacks/food and binoculars. Meet at the Ranger Station at 9 a.m. for the shuttle. $5 per person.

HUG A TREE & SURVIVE: Wednesday, February 21 Free program for children ages 7-11. Many years ago, a 9-yearold got lost on a hike, and a massive search was unsuccessful in finding him alive. From the tragedy, Hug a Tree and Survive was created. It gives youngsters a set of tools to use to make themselves more findable if they become lost. Meet at the Stewart Building from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Registration is required.

KIDS SPRING FISHING TOURNAMENT: Saturday, March 2 For ages 5-15. Each participant must catch three different species of fish. There will be shore and boat fishing divisions. All children who compete will be eligible to win prizes. Tournament rules and instructions will be issued during check in, at the Ranger Station, on March 2. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. A hotdog lunch is provided. Rental fees, where applicable, will apply. Registration costs $15. Deadline February 24.

BOATING SAFETY COURSE: Saturday, March 30 8:00 am–4:00 pm Join us at Beaverdam Park’s Whitcomb Lodge as Captain Ronald Cagle with the Virginia Marine Resources Commission leads a free session in boating safety. This class is a must for every person (ages 12 and up) who wants to learn more about the fundamentals of responsible boating. As of 2016, operators of personal watercraft such as Jet Skis, Sea-Doos, WaveRunners, etc and operators of boats with a motor of 10 horsepower or greater are required to have boating safety education completion card on board when operating the craft, regardless of age. Class runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., so bring a lunch.

EARTH DAY Seed bombs for the buffer zone: April 20-22 Stop by the Ranger Station at Beaverdam Park to make a free seed bomb to drop in the buffer zone. What is a seed bomb? It’s a mixture of soil, air dry clay and wildflower seeds. You mix them together, then toss them into the lake buffer zone that we are building to fight erosion. Join the fun and help us protect the lake’s shoreline. While supplies last. No registration required.

KAYAKING 101: Saturday, May 4 For ages 16 and older. Learn the basics of kayaking on beautiful Beaverdam Lake. We will cover basic paddle strokes, safety, types of kayaks and more. If you have ever wanted to try kayaking, this is your chance! Registration costs $15, and the class goes from 10 a.m. to noon. Kayaks, personal flotation devices and paddle included. Deadline April 27.

BEAVERDAM TRIATHLON: Saturday, May 11 Will you be one of Beaverdam Park's first Triathletes? We will begin the race at 7 a.m. with a 2.5 mile run on the hiking trail.

The second phase is a 6.1 mile bike on multi-use trails, followed by a 1.9 mile paddle on the lake. The race begins and ends at Whitcomb Lodge. Your $50 entry fee provides water stations, a bike check, t-shirts, medals and awards to overall Male and Female and Master. Deadline April 14.

BEAVERDAM THURSDAY THOUGHTS... 2nd Thursdays Join us at the Beaverdam Park Amphitheater from 6:30-7:30 p.m. for Thursday Thoughts, where we will have staff and guests share interesting information on nature, wildlife, the environment, recycling and more. Pre-registration is required for this free series. On May 9, learn about bees and pollinators.

HOMESCHOOL ADVENTURES: 2nd Wednesdays Join us at Whitcomb Lodge at Beaverdam Park from 10 a.m. to noon to explore the current flora and fauna. GLOutdoors CHALLENGE: March 1, 2024 – Feb. 28, 2025 PRT wants you to get OUTDOORS! We are encouraging you with the GLOutdoors Challenge. Beginning March 1 you can join the fun by registering for the $10 program through PRT. How does it work? If you achieve the 12 challenges, you will earn the GLOutdoor sticker, wristband and we will plant a flower in your honor in the GLOutdoors flower bed coming soon to a County park!

Here are the challenges: 1. Walk Main Street from the Court Circle to the Stoplight at Route 14/Route 17.

2. Hike a trail at Beaverdam’s Main Entrance.

3. Hike a trail at Beaverdam's Farys Mill Road entrance.

4. Participate in one or more of Clean Community’s cleanup days (Clean Gloucester Days Fall/Spring, Coastal Cleanup Day or Cleanup GPBP).

5. Visit the Gloucester LOVE signs (GPBP & Whitleys Peanuts).

6. Participate in a Beaverdam Park Activity (Owl Walk, Paddle, Hike, Etc).

7. Hike the Storybook Trail or the Memorial Garden Trail at Woodville Park.

8. Visit the Gloucester Museum of History and the Visitor’s Center (Court Circle).

9. Visit the Tucker Store Pocket Park on Main Street.

10. Hike, bike or paddle at Machicomoco ($5 entrance fee applies or use your Annual Pass).

11. Hike the gardens at Brent and Becky’s Bulbs.

12. Hike the trail at Tyndall’s Point Park.

KIDS CRAFT MARKET: Saturday, May 18 For ages 18 and under. Kids Craft Market on the Green is an opportunity and venue for our crafty, artsy youth to sell their creations. Handmade items will be on sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. during this Colonial Court Circle Lawn show. We encourage you to bring a reusable shopping bag; we recycle and try to minimize use of plastic bags. Most of these young entrepreneurs will be dealing in cash only, so please be prepared.

All registration is through the PRT Online Registration site. You must create an account to register (if your parent has an account you may register through their account). Each booth size is 10’x10’ and costs $25. We supply one 6’ table and one folding chair. You must supply other tables, chairs or other items that you need. If you prefer more than one space, you must add a second item to your cart. Please email at least three photos of your merchandise to dcarter@gloucesterva.info in order for your registration to be approved and your space reserved. The registration deadline is May 1. After May 1, if spaces are available there will be a $10 late fee applied.

The introductory 6-week group class focuses on socialization and is designed to familiarize your puppy with basic behaviors and cues such as "sit" and "down.” This class also helps pet parents address common puppy specifics like potty training, chewing and more, along with loose leash walking. This class will also address undesirable behaviors such as jumping.

Meet members of the 7th Virginia Regiment and learn about Gloucester’s role during the American Revolution. Feel the ground shake during cannon and musket firing demonstrations. Observe campfire cooking, play colonial-era games, partake in a family-friendly scavenger hunt, and engage with dozens of reenactors while visiting an original 1770 tavern that is now home to the Gloucester Museum of History.

This free program will take place during the 2024 Daffodil Festival and aligns with the Virginia Standards of Learning for students of all ages.

VIRGINIA INTERNATIONAL TATTOO: Sunday, April 21 Join us from noon to 6:30 p.m. as we visit the Virginia International Tattoo at Norfolk Scope. HENRICUS HISTORICAL PARK: Wednesday, May 15 In 1611, Sir Thomas Dale arrived in Virginia with instructions from the London Company to establish a new town and principal seat for the colony. And as they say, the rest is history… Henricus' interpreters and recreated soldiers’ cabins, watchtowers, church, blacksmith forge, and carpentry shop help demonstrate the daily life of those English colonists who struggled under martial law from 1611-1614. Dress for the weather, we will be outdoors. The trip runs from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and lunch will be on your own on the way home. Cost: $45. Deadline: May 8.

Well Water Testing and Diabetes Prevention The Gloucester VCE office is planning to continue a pair of their annual programs in 2024: the Well Water Testing Clinic and Virtual Diabetes Prevention Program. While dates have not been finalized for either, if you are interested in either program, would like additional information, and/or would like to be added to an email list for updates and reminders when registration opens, please contact Glenn Sturm at gjsturm@vt.edu.

Peasley Middle School Reality Store We are looking for additional volunteers to help with our Reality Store simulation on February 27-28 at Peasley Middle School. Reality Store is a hands-on experience for 8th graders where they are given a family situation (income, marital status, children, etc.) and are asked to use their monthly income to make decisions on things like housing, transportation, food, clothing, entertainment, etc. Volunteers are needed to staff each booth representing one of these expenses to help explain the options to the students.

and who will not have turned 14 before January 1, 2024. Those who will be 13 before Jan. 1 can attend as a Counselor in Training and take that class as one of their four chosen classes. There will be an application for those interested in someday being a counselor.

4-H Camp is where kids learn critical life skills like resilience and independence while enjoying a week in which they have opportunities to try new activities like archery, pen-making, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, field sports, cooking and more. Campers make new friends, share evening campfires and enjoy a sense of belonging.

Camp at this 4-H Educational Center is accredited through the American Camping Association.

The simulations will run from 10 a.m. - 2:40 p.m. each day, with lunch provided. If you would like to volunteer, but are unable to volunteer for the entire day, we would still love your help during the times you are available! Contact Glenn Sturm at gjsturm@vt.edu if you are interested.

Gloucester 4-H Happenings Summer Day Camps Our summer day camp schedule in Gloucester will be out soon. We expect to host the Chef in the Making Camp, Cloverbud Camp (ages 5-8), Water Wizard Camp, and Sewing Camp. Registration for these camps will begin in April. Summer Camp at Jamestown 4-H Center We are looking forward to summer 4-H camp at Jamestown 4-H Education Center. Registration will be online and begins February 1, 2024. Camp has a wonderful, enormous pool with certified lifeguards on duty. All campers take a swim test to access the deep end and participate in kayak and canoe lessons on the James.

Jamestown has air-conditioned cabins and lodges.

Meals are served family style, and snacks may be purchased at the camp store during free time.
