About this guide
Welcome to our Accessible Guide to Cornwall.
We’re here to help you find inspiration and ideas for places to eat, stay and explore that suit your accessibility needs.
To help you find things near to you, or in an area of Cornwall you might like to visit, we have organised places to eat, places to stay and days out, by geographical area.
We’ve also included a map and information about beaches and other helpful groups and resources around Cornwall to help you enjoy getting out and about.
Each location listed features a set of icons indicating key accessibility features, including whether a place has wheelchair access, accessible toilets and parking, support for people with sight or hearing loss and more. See the Key to Symbols on the page opposite.
We’ve made every effort to ensure the information is accurate at the time of publication. However, please note that places may change or close unexpectedly.
Always check opening hours before your visit—especially in the winter months— and keep an eye out for weekend events, which you may want to attend (or avoid!).
We hope this guide helps you to enjoy some new adventures and please do let us know of any great places you would like us to include in future issues by emailing us at hello@accesscornwall.org.uk
Hello from the team at Access Cornwall!
We’re proud to call Cornwall home — this is a place known for its dramatic coastline, charming fishing villages, and quieter pace of life. Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, The Clare Milne Trust and the Cornwall Community Foundation, we’ve created this guide to help everyone enjoy the very best Cornwall has to offer.
The Access Cornwall Team
There are many myths and legends rooted in Cornwall’s rugged beauty, and one of them, we would argue, is that this is a region that is largely inaccessible to people who are disabled or who have access needs.
Our entire team live with a variety of disabilities and access challenges, and we can assure you, there are a wealth of accessible adventures and welcoming, inclusive businesses here in the Duchy, if you know where to find them!
Here at Access Cornwall we are passionate about helping people with access needs. Those might be due to visible or hidden disabilities, health conditions or simply people who are older or who have young families -whatever the challenge, we want you to be able to enjoy as much as possible of the wonderful things Cornwall has to offer.
We believe that clear, honest accessibility information, that has been researched and checked by people who live with disabilities and access needs, is key to planning a great day out or a stress-free holiday.
That’s why our team — made up of people with lived experience of various accessibility challenges — has carefully researched and shared the details that matter most.
Inside this guide, you’ll find a wide range of activities, accommodation, and places to eat to suit every taste, budget, and group size. From theme parks to watersports, semi-tropical gardens to cycle trails, award-winning hotels to cosy campsites — we’ve got Cornwall covered, from Saltash to Penzance and, of course, the enchanting Isles of Scilly.
We know that no two people are the same — what’s accessible for one person might be a challenge for another. That’s why we aim to provide thorough, thoughtful information to help you plan a relaxing and enjoyable time in Cornwall.
We’d love to hear your feedback, including any hidden gems we may have missed. Your suggestions help us improve future editions of this guide and enhance our website.
And if you find a place through this guide, let them know you heard about them through Access Cornwall and shout loud about it on social media if you feel comfortable to do that — we’re always happy to help businesses become even more inclusive and to reward their efforts by letting them know when they’ve done a great job!

WEST CORNWALL
Minack Theatre, PK Porthcurno
Welcome to West Cornwall
West Cornwall is renowned for its dramatic coastline, historic tin-mining heritage, and charming fishing villages as well as the famous artists colonies in St Ives and Newlyn. The landscape is marked by engine houses from its mining past and harbours offering fresh seafood. Notable landmarks include Land’s End—the most westerly point of mainland Britain and the spectacular cliffside Minack Theatre. Main towns include Penzance, St Ives, Camborne, and Redruth, alongside picturesque villages like Sennen, Zennor and Newlyn. The area is wellconnected by the main railway line ending in Penzance and a scenic branch line to St Ives.
A Day in Paradise: Accessible Adventures at Paradise Park, Hayle
Tucked away in the heart of Hayle, Paradise Park is more than just a wildlife sanctuary—it’s a vibrant, inclusive space which offers a rich experience for the whole family. Home to over 1,200 birds and a host of rare mammals including red pandas, otters, and red squirrels, this family-run park offers a rich sensory experience for visitors of all ages and abilities.
The park features a Victorian walled garden, and the majority of paths are either tarmac or light gravel, making them suitable for wheelchairs and mobility aids. There’s a recommended stepfree route, and mobility scooters are available to borrow—just call ahead to reserve one. The entrance is level, with automatic doors leading into a spacious gift shop and café, both of which are easy to navigate.
For families, the JungleBarn indoor play centre is a highlight.
While some equipment involves steps, there are ground-level activities and a large accessible toilet and baby changing room. The JungleBarn also offers a lift to the upstairs party room, and staff are on hand to support children who may need a quieter or more structured experience.
The park’s layout allows for flexibility. If you’re looking for a peaceful moment, the shady Woodland Walk and the jungle hut in Parrot Jungle offer calm spaces away from the crowds. During
busier events like the flying displays or lorikeet feeding, visitors can choose to observe from a distance or wait until the area quietens down.
Accessible toilets are located near the picnic lawn and inside the JungleBarn. Assistance dogs are welcome, though staff may advise on areas to avoid if birds are freeflying or nesting.
Getting there is straightforward: Paradise Park is an eight-minute
walk from Hayle railway station and close to a bus stop at St Michael’s Hospital. There’s also a free car park with 13 accessible bays near the entrance.
Whether you’re a bird enthusiast, a family seeking a fun day out, or someone looking for a tranquil stroll among exotic wildlife, Paradise Park offers a warm welcome and thoughtful design that makes it a standout destination for disabled visitors in Cornwall.

Making Waves at Trevassack Lake:
Inclusive Adventures with the Children’s Sailing Trust
Tucked away in the heart of the Lizard Peninsula, Trevassack Lake is more than just a scenic retreat surrounded by wildlife and calm waters—it’s a place where adventure and accessibility go hand in hand. Home to the Children’s Sailing Trust (CST), the lake offers inclusive watersports and sailing experiences that open new horizons for young people of all abilities.
One of the most inspiring parts of the CST’s work is its Sailability programme, which invites children and young people—whatever their physical or learning needs—to experience the freedom of sailing in a safe and supportive environment. For instructor Rebekah, who began sailing with CST at just eight years old, it’s a full-circle journey.
“I was part of the Trust’s schools programme when I was a child,” Rebekah says. “Now I’m an instructor, and I get to see the same excitement in others that I felt. It’s so rewarding watching confidence grow—whether it’s someone trying sailing for the first time or returning each week with a bigger smile.”
In a recent conversation with Holly Martin, a student at Truro College and Access Cornwall volunteer who uses Sailability herself, Rebekah reflected on her own path. “There was an instructor when I was younger—Sammy—she really inspired me. Seeing someone like me in that role showed me it was possible.”
Whether it’s helping a nervous first-timer into a boat, guiding someone through their first tack, or simply cheering on from the jetty, instructors and volunteers at Trevassack Lake ensure that no one is left on shore. “The volunteers are amazing,” says Rebekah. “They’re a huge part of making the sessions run smoothly and safely. And what’s particularly rewarding for all of us is seeing children come alive in the boats—laughing, splashing, and discovering new abilities. “By the fifth session, they’re sailing independently. It’s magical to see.”
A Place to Stay, Relax and Refuel
The magic of Trevassack Lake doesn’t end when the boats are packed away. The site also features
beautifully designed accessible lodges and cabins, offering self-catering stays for families, friends, and groups. These high-quality accommodations are built with inclusivity in mind—spacious layouts, accessible bathrooms, hoist systems, and stunning views over the water make this a rare gem for accessible travel in Cornwall.
Just a short stroll from the jetty is the Trevassack lake cafe, a bright, friendly spot with indoor and outdoor seating and panoramic views across the lake. Serving delicious meals, cakes, and locally sourced drinks, the café is fully accessible and welcomes everyone—whether you’re a sailor, a guest, or simply out for a lakeside coffee.

Peg’s Surf Coaching
Surfing for everyone - yes, everyone!!
Based in Perranporth, Pegleg Bennett is the owner of Peg’s Surf Coaching, a Level
2 Surf Coach and former AASP World Champion (2022-23) in his division. Peg is a 50-something year old who has used a prosthetic leg throughout his life, and does not let it hold him back.
The term now used in disability sport is ‘adaptive’, and this truly reflects the approach to surf sessions at Peg’s Surf Coaching. To achieve the levels of support and expertise required for inclusive surf sessions, Peg has adaptive surf qualifications as well as his own experience as a world champion.
His partner Annie Etheridge who works alongside him is also qualified as an adaptive surf coach and she is a British Sign Language interpreter with experience in teaching for the deaf and also supporting young people with Special Educational needs.
Together they are incredibly passionate and skilled in ensuring that their surfing lessons are inclusive and offer a wonderful experience for the whole family.
Inclusive surf kit
Equipment and methods used to improve accessibility include: adapted surfboards with additional hand rails and/or wedges to lift the chest for better positioning in the water; additional support in the water; audio description and closeproximity coaching for blind and visually impaired surfers; BSL and visual communication techniques for people who are deaf, hard of hearing or have difficulty accessing speech; improved beach access through use of beach wheelchairs; and specific permission from the Parish Council to use occasional vehicular access.
Peg maintains a ‘can-do’ attitude in his approach to coaching, and will work with you to overcome whatever obstacles you feel might hold you back.
He has personal experience of potential ‘barriers’ - such as discrimination, pre-conceptions and non-inclusion in a range of scenarios - and as a result is determined to counteract such negativity in his own coaching.
“We want as many people as possible to experience the joy of being in the water and enjoying the waves,” says Peg. “If someone is keen to give it a try, we’ll do our utmost to help them.”
Examples of people supported to surf
• Family sessions where one member of the family had a physical disability or learning difference, allowing them all to participate together
• BSL translation for a deaf girl, allowing her to ask questions and communicate her fears and feelings, as well as receive tuition
• 1 :1 sessions for members of the English Adaptive Surf Team, focusing on their preparation for international competition
• Additional ‘eyes in the water’ for a family where 2 out of 4 members have sight loss
• Surf coaching using technique modifications for people with limb amputations
• A private session for a surfer with PTSD, whose needs, triggers and modification approaches were discussed in advance and throughout her lesson
• A ‘return to surf’ confidence and skill session for a stroke survivor

ISLES OF SCILLY
The beautiful and intriguing Isles of Scilly are located 28 miles south west of the tip of Land’s End. They are famed for their pure white shores and clear, turquoise bays, and a rich history. Many shipwrecks lie offshore, including famous treasure wrecks, and one hotel has a dungeon which hosted famous prisoners from the Civil War. Birdwatchers and scuba divers alike head here to explore the islands and to watch wildlife in utterly tranquil surroundings. Accessibility is improving all the time. We travelled over with Matt, using his wheelchair to check out the Skybus flights and the Scillonian passenger ferry and found the journey very smooth. Travelling between the “off-islands” can be challenging as the ease of getting on and off the boats depends mostly on the tides and weather. But the Isles of Scilly community are very well-organised and with good planning, and the help of the professional and friendly teams from Isles of Scilly Travel and the St Mary’s Boatmen’s Association, many things are possible!
Getting There
The Isles of Scilly Travel company has been working with Access Cornwall to improve accessibility information. Here is some helpful information to help you plan your trip.
Skybus
Wheelchair users can travel on the Skybus as long as you have enough ambulatory ability to manage the steps into the aircraft. You have to go up some steps and you cannot be carried, so those with mobility challenges should enquire and check if they can board safely. You can have your wheelchair carried in the hold, and need to transfer to a temporary wheelchair which is loaned to you while you wait for and board the plane. There are accessible toilets at Land’s End airport and good accessibility around the airport in general.
Scillonian III
Those using manual wheelchairs can go on the boat but because the weather and tides can impact the safety and gradient height of getting onboard, you need to book 48 hours ahead and check in with the Isles of Scilly Travel team in the days before departure.
Do be aware that the gradient to get on board can be steep, but assistance is available from the crew. When the ship is berthed, there is a lift from the Upper Deck to the Main Deck and Lower Saloon. Here you can find a cafe and accessible toilets and there is priority seating available. You cannot use the lift once the Scillonian is at sea. Please be aware that if sea conditions are poor, it may be necessary to secure wheelchairs, or even cancel sailings for safety.
Subtitles are available for the onscreen safety guidance as are braille/large print versions of safety announcements if required. All staff have accessibility training, including autism and dementia training.
Fares
Day trips are from £35 return on the Scillonian III or £130 on the Skybus, or you can combine the two modes of travel.

BEACHES
Accessible Beaches in Cornwall:
Your Guide to
Coastal Freedom
Cornwall’s coastline is legendary—stretching over 300 miles, it offers golden sands, dramatic cliffs, and tranquil coves. But for many disabled visitors, the question has always been: can I get onto the beach? Our Accessible Guide to Beaches in Cornwall will help!
This free, easy-to-use guide is a gamechanger for anyone planning a beach day with access needs. The guide includes information on over 40 beaches across Cornwall. It includes everything from terrain descriptions and parking proximity to the availability of beach wheelchairs and accessible toilets.
Each beach is rated using a colourcoded system, helping users quickly identify which locations best suit their needs. Whether you’re looking for level access, Changing Places toilets, or sand chairs that allow you to roll right into the sea, the guide makes it easy to plan ahead and avoid surprises.
The guide also highlights lesserknown gems like Polkerris Beach, near Fowey which offers ramped access and a sheltered cove ideal for a peaceful day out, and Watergate Bay, where sand chairs are available from the hotel and the rebuilt steps offer improved access for ambulant disabled visitors.
Beyond the beach listings, the guide includes practical tips for planning your visit—such as how to book sand chairs, where to find accessible parking, and what to expect in terms of tides and terrain. It’s a thoughtful, empowering resource that reflects the lived experience of its creators.
You can download the guide for free at accesscornwall.org.uk
