sixty years ago our Founder wrote
“
Scouting£ or Boys” and gave to the wOrld a new approach to the deveIopment of the character and capabⅡ ities o£ boys。
Again and again he£ ound it necesgary to gtress the danger of the egsential shnplici-y o£ the idea of Scouting being obgcured by over organisadon and a too gerious approach, Th忆 is what he said:ˉ “ ‘ .¨
By‘ synthetic scouting”
I mean the
scout system obscured by overclothing
the natural forⅡ1 with rules and instructive hterature, tending to make what
origina11y was,
and 8hou1d be, an open-air game into a science for the scouter
and a school curriculu∏ 1 for the boys”
In these
days an inoreasing number of mechanical and technological aids to training
are beco∏ 1ing available and though I am sure that we should, and mug1 make fu11 use of
then1, I am equa11y sure that we must sti11heed the warning8o£
our Founder and never
a11ow theⅡ 1 to become more than aldg to giving greater enjoyment of the game of Scouung to our boys。
