Aalborg Portland has been making cement for more than 100 years – and since the beginning of the 1930s the company has developed, produced and distributed white cement. Today, Aalborg Portland is the only cement factory in Denmark.

It all started more than 70 million years ago when small shellfish were deposited on the ocean floor by relatively warm waters.

Here the valuable substance, chalk, was developed – a naturally created raw material of very high quality and almost entirely free of contaminants. The chalk deposits in Aalborg are so rich that they will ensure cement production another fifty years.

The chalk quarry extends over 425 ha and the chalk is transported from here to the factory. Shifting sand with a low content of iron is used to produce AALBORG WHITE® cement. This type of sand was deposited during the sand drift in the 1800s and it is this special deposit that is used in the cement production.

It also ensures an environmentally-friendly production process which is controlled, regulated, and checked for quality from a computerised control room. A robot-operated laboratory ensures the uniformity of semi-products and finished cement.
