The 2022-23 Guide is a collaboration with the Chamber, City of Globe, Town of Miami, and more than 100 local businesses and organizations who signed on to our vision of a Guide that would tell a big story about our small towns. It’s also the product of the creativity and professionalism of a host of contributors. Photography by Yevette Vargas, writing from Globe Miami Times’ stable of local reporters, and the beautiful design and layout by Jenifer Lee, our Creative Director of 16 years, have helped make this Guide a worthy reflection of the Globe-Miami community. This year, the Guide will be sent out to 100 Chambers and Visitors Centers across the state, as well as being represented by our own Globe-Miami Chamber & Visitors Center. The Chamber will use the Guide to represent our community at statewide events and will make it available to the nearly 30,000 visitors who stop in each year for information. And it will be available at area hotels and destinations and at more than 100 localFinally, businesses.thisGuide will be available online 24/7, where readers can connect with the Globe-Miami community and its businesses anywhere, anytime.

Linda PublisherGross Globe-Miami has been called “the heart of Arizona” with good reason. LCGROSS MIAMI BY ELIZABETH EATON

If you want a good look at the Globe-Miami community and what it means to live, work, and play here, this is the place to start. We hope you’ll share it with family, friends, clients, potential workforce hires, and investors. The world is on the move, it seems these days. People are looking for jobs, investment opportunities, a change in lifestyle, a connection withWhatevercommunity.itisthat brings you to Globe-Miami, welcome. If you’re looking for a vibe, a vocation, a place to vacation or a place to invest – this is our story.

GLOBE | BY

Globe Miami Times has been covering the community for over 16 years, focusing on the people and culture that define us. As a transplant from Tucson many years ago, I began the publication to shed light on everything I was discovering about my new hometown. I wanted to explore and uncover the quintessential vibe of Globe-Miami – one of those things that makes us all glad to call it home. I wanted to meet the new folks like me, who relocated here from all over, and the third-generation family members who run local businesses and have names you come to recognize instantly if you spend much timeSohere.when the Globe-Miami Chamber asked us to produce this year’s Business and Community Guide, we jumped at the opportunity. This publication offers an inclusive look at the community through our eyes – we know what it’s like to be new to the area, but we can also draw on our personal experiences and the long-standing connections we’ve forged over the years. We feel this combination of a fresh perspective and deep community knowledge helps make this Guide an authentic and useful resource for those looking to live, work, or play here.

Globe-Miami Community Guide LIVE 5 LIVING IN Globe-Miami

In addition to our location at the intersection of five major highways connecting us to Phoenix, Tucson, Payson, Safford, and Show Low, GlobeMiami enjoys a unique blend of history, culture, and economics. These elements influenced the community’s early development and, in turn, that of the state – and they continue to make GlobeMiami a special and dynamic place today.

BLOOM – AN ASIAN CONCEPT

– CHEF JOHN COME & Enjoy X PERIENCE

Once upon a time known as simply Noodles, Bloom was first developed in 1997, in Melbourne, Australia. Our concept encompasses the lessons learned from traditional home cooks and distinguished chefs from across Asia, Canada, and the United States. With this in mind, we labored continuous hours on an Ontario potato farm, we did jumping jacks in Tokyo, ran around the Great Wall, rode endless buses in Vietnam, got lost in Malaysia, bought a fake Rolex in Thailand – and in Singapore, we just ate too much. Our adventures helped us develop our mission statement, which is “back to basics”. It is an idea to enlighten modern cooking with the foundation of healthy meals with no fries on the side. By Thea Wilshire Globe has shown a commitment to community recreation since the town’s earliest days. Today, Globe boasts the most parks per capita of any city in Arizona, with 14 City parks serving its 7,400 residents. Many of Globe’s parks date from pre-automotive days.

Look for Giorsetti, Ryan, Euclid/ Chiono, and Collins Parks, as well as the little botanical garden area below Besh ba Gowah. Most of these older parks provide playground equipment and at least one picnic table, but not water fountains.

“Pocket parks,” scattered throughout the older sections of town, were created to allow equitable access for all residents before people had cars to get around. They offer a quaint accessibility that allows you to put the park on like a comfortable coat, wrapping yourself in all the resources that each affords.

The Active Adult Center Park is located just outside the Globe Senior Center but is not reserved for seniors. Anyone can use the BBQs and shaded picnic tables. Outdoor senior fitness equipment is planned for this park. It makes for a great place to park your car, stretch and work out, then walk Globe’s historic downtown or the Stairizona Trail.

28 LIVE 2022-2023

The Old Dominion Historic Mine Park is currently closed for safety remediation work by the mine that stewards this heritage site. When open, it offers 4.5 miles of trails, access to mining artifacts, educational signs about copper mining and the region, two large group pavilions with picnic tables, BBQs, two smaller ramadas, a mining-themed playground with a 100-foot zipline, a nine-hole disc golf course, and restrooms.

Last but not least is the Globe Community Center Park. This expansive 34-acre recreation area hosts our newly renovated pool and splash pad, as well as baseball and softball fields, T-ball fields, basketball courts, soccer fields, tennis courts, shuffleboard, volleyball courts, a small skate park, a large playground, BBQs, restrooms, and the largest picnic pavilion in the region.   Globe also has several special-purpose parks. The K9 Mine Bark Park is for dogs and their owners. It has shade ramadas, a walking track, doggie waste stations, water for animals and people, and both general-use and specialuse fenced areas. The patrons of the dog park invested in art and signage, features not usually found at a dog park.

Besh ba Gowah is one of the few City-run archeological parks in the state, and the largest tourist attraction in Globe. This park is built on the site of a 900-year-old Salado Indian pueblo. The visitor’s center offers a 12-minute video explaining the history of the area, a small museum of artifacts discovered at the site, and a gift shop. Visitors can explore the ruins and the ethnobotanical garden, use the picnic tables, and watch the plethora of birds, including many hummingbirds, attracted to the site.

The Noftsger Hill Sports Complex offers softball and baseball fields, restrooms, and a concession area.

Veterans Park (AKA the Train Park) recently had new playground equipment installed. It also provides picnic tables, BBQs, restrooms, and a historic train engine. Directly in front of Globe’s Municipal Building, this park steps in to serve as a town square in the absence of one in Globe. It’s used for community gatherings like the Saturday Farmers Market, concerts, the annual State-of-the-City address, and other special events.

Globe also boasts three large park complexes, each with different purposes. Round Mountain Park offers miles of hiking trails (including steep hills for cardio fitness) in a setting replete with natural flora and fauna. The park offers four small picnic ramadas scattered throughout the site. Educational signage helps visitors learn about the area and stay safe, and restrooms are available at the entrance. It’s a great place to catch sight of wildflowers in the spring and to spot deer on the hillsides. Hikers who reach the summit of the mountain are rewarded with a marvelous view of the city and surrounding areas.

Globe-Miami Community Guide

A new addition to City-run outdoor recreation resources in Globe is the Stairizona Trail. Utilizing seven historic cement staircases and three pedestrian bridges spread throughout our older neighborhoods, the Stairizona Trail is currently being developed. It will be packed full of art - 28 installations are planned - and afford great views of town. The trail will stop at historic sites like the “G” and the historic cemetery. The trail will cover three routes, offering 1.4-mile, 2.5-mile, and 4+-mileMiamioptions.hastwo parks: the narrow park along the highway at 211 Live Oak offering picnic tables and a playground, and Miami Memorial Park at 608 Sullivan St. The Memorial Park has ramadas, picnic tables, BBQs, a playground, restrooms, and an outdoor movie venue. It serves as the hub of the Miami community and the site for concerts, art fairs, and large events. Globe and Miami’s libraries offer many community resources, including free access to computers and printers, job support, and meeting spaces, as well as a variety of creative programming for all ages, from infants to elders. Globe even has a Tool Lending Library, where residents can check out power tools, ladders, and more for free. The Miami Library hosts the Miami Sports Hall of Fame

The major mine operators in Globe-Miami as of 2022 include Capstone Copper, Freeport/McMoRan (FCX), Carlota Copper, and BHP Billiton.

Mining Is Thriving in Globe-Miami

Even Globe’s name reflects its connection to mining – it’s said to refer to an Earth-shaped nugget of silver discovered nearby. And mining continues to drive Globe-Miami’s economy, providing employment, tax revenues, and valued partnerships in community development.

Globe-Miami was built on mining – it was discoveries of silver and copper that brought workers, business, the railroad, and economic success to Globe and Miami in their earliest days.

By Patricia Sanders

Silver mining came to the area in the 1870s, but those mines played out by 1880 – just in time for the immense boom in demand for copper, needed for wire as electricity and the telephone spread across the country.

By the time it closed in 1931, the Old Dominion –the area’s largest producer – had mined some 800 million pounds of copper, with production peaking in World War 1. That would make enough 12-gauge wire to circle the Earth 73 times.

Soon, the Old Dominion Copper Company, Miami Copper Company, Inspiration Consolidated, and others were pulling 10% to 12% copper ore from the hills surrounding Globe and Miami and roasting it in furnaces that could process 200 tons per day. During the early 1900s, trains were hauling out as much as 2 million pounds of copper in a month. One of the many smelter stacks constructed between 1880 and 1930 can still be seen along Highway 60.

36 WORK 2022-2023

The 1950s were a time of transition at GlobeMiami as the old underground operations transferred to modern, open-pit copper mining. Today, Globe-Miami continues to depend on copper mining for its economic livelihood. More than one in every five jobs in Globe and Miami are related to mining and the production of copper. In addition to copper, the mines also produce smaller amounts of gold and molybdenum.

Capstone’s Pinto Valley operation features the only operating mill in the Globe-Miami mining district.

& ENVIRONMENTAL

Freeport McMoRan’s smelter has the distinction of being one of only three operational smelters in the United States. The smelter was updated in 1974 to meet Clean Air Act standards and was modernized again in 1992 and 2018. It processes copper concentrate into blister copper and, as a by-product, captures sulfuric acid, which is used in the company’s leaching operations.

BHP Billiton holds a unique niche in the GlobeMiami mining community. As stewards of legacy assets, the company manages mine properties that are no longer operational, including the Old Dominion, Copper Cities, Miami Unit, and Solitude assets. BHP Billiton’s 70 local employees and contractors work to ensure these properties remain safe, stable, and non-polluting. The company monitors 2,500 locations in the area, operates 12 water treatment facilities, and, in 2021 alone, closed 237 open mine shafts.

u AN EARLY

Freeport McMoRan’s Miami operation has been at the forefront of mining technology for at least 100 years, being among the first to have used vat leaching and precipitation plants to recover oxide minerals. With the introduction of SX/EW (solvent extraction-electrowinning) processes in the late 1970s, vat leaching was discontinued, and Miami’s flotation concentrator was closed in 1986.

BHP Billiton is also a major participant in Rio Tinto’s Resolution Copper project, located just east of Superior. Using innovative methods, this project will extract copper from a huge deposit located 5,250 feet underground. Resolution Copper is one of the largest undeveloped copper projects in the world and has the potential to become the largest copper producer in North America. Copper is all around us – in the wiring within the walls of our houses and buildings, in our electronic devices, and in telecommunications cables that link the world. Globe-Miami is proud of the central role it has played – and continues to play – in making the modern world work. MAP OF THE GLOBE-MIAMI AREA ENGINEERING SERVICES

Capstone, currently the second-largest employer in the district, contributes more than $270 million annually to Arizona’s economy.

Freeport McMoRan’s rod plant opened in 1966, the first of its kind to be located at a mine site. It produces continuous-cast copper rods from copper produced at the Miami mines and other mines across North America and ships the rod around the world to be made into wire and cables.

Globe-Miami Community Guide WORK 39 Generations Past. Generations to Come. With the mine expansion, Pinto Valley will be producing through 2039. Since 1974, we are proud to be part of the Copper Triangle's mining history and future.

Managing a legacy asset is a critical part of demonstrating our commitments to our host communities, governments, and the environment. At a minimum, we must comply with regulatory obligations, but we recognize that taking into account the views of our host communities beyond regulations is important in how we manage our legacy sites. The world’s expectations of mining companies have changed, and we think it is for the better. We want to reimagine the legacy of mining.

BHP is one of the world’s largest resource companies and as such, we take pride in our site management from exploration to closure. BHP is committed to Social Value, which is our positive contribution to society – to our people, partners, the economy, environment, and local community. We have operating mines around the world and we also manage sites that are no longer producing. We refer to these as “Legacy Assets.”

40 WORK 2022-2023

By Kate Sommerville, General Manager Legacy Assets

Reimagining the Legacy

We have a steadfast focus on the safety of our sites, our environmental footprint, the hydrogeology and hydrology of the sites, and the potential impact on the community. To maintain this focus, we utilize a data-driven approach. We study and manage both surface water and ground water, soils, tailings facilities, and rock dumps. We have 12 water treatment facilities and 2,500 monitoring locations collecting 95,000 pieces of data in the area. We continue to manage the mining infrastructure that exists on site with safety and environment top of mind. This year alone we closed 237 open mine shafts on our properties in the Globe-Miami area. of Mining

Our Globe-Miami site, which produced copper in the past, is one of these Legacy Assets. BHP has other Legacy Assets in Arizona, and in other U.S. states such as California, Utah and New Mexico. We also have Legacy Assets in several Canadian provinces, including British Colombia, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia. These sites produced and processed copper, zinc, uranium, tin, and gold. Globe-Miami is a wonderful community and we are proud of the work we have done together. Our Legacy Assets in Globe-Miami include Copper Cities, Miami Unit, Solitude and Old Dominion. These sites provide employment for more than 70 employees and local contractors. Our ultimate aim with these sites, as with all of our sites, is to ensure they are safe, stable and non-polluting, but we also want to reimagine the site for beneficial use when and where we can.

BHP took ownership of the sites in the GlobeMiami area in 1996. Copper production ceased shortly thereafter. The work of closure lies with us and we take the responsibilities associated with closure very seriously.

Globe-Miami Community Guide WORK 41

A critical part of our technical work in the GlobeMiami area is focused on tailings storage facility management. Tailings are the materials that are left over after mined ore is processed. Most of BHP’s Legacy Assets operated here in the early and mid-1900s when the industry did not collect or store a lot of data. Today, monitoring of the tailings storage facilities and the environmental and geographic area is significant and key to our work. The Globe-Miami region and economy grew alongside mining, and the communities in the region remain an important part of BHP’s approach to managing these sites. Foremost in our approach is to continue to reduce the safety and environmental risks at sites while also preserving the rich mining history that is important to the community. We work to keep the community informed about our work, be available to discuss our progress with them, and take their feedback and ideas in everything we do.

BHP is also part of the community. Many of our employees, suppliers, and partners live and work in the region, and we want to support the community in every way that we can. We do this in a variety of ways, including providing scholarships at the junior college and university levels, donating to educational events, and supporting recreation projects. For example, we recently partnered with the local hospital to create a community walking path and with a local non-profit to fund community art projects in the downtown area. All of these initiatives strengthen and enrich the wonderful community spirit and opportunities of Globe-Miami, and we are proud to be a part of this work. Indigenous communities are critical to the success of any mining project. We must think of them before projects begin, during operations, and long after operations finish. We have been working very hard to improve our engagement and are making good progress. One of the ways we achieve this is through our Tribal Monitor Program, where we engage tribal members to work alongside archaeologists in conducting cultural heritage surveys prior to new ground disturbances at our Legacy Assets. This program has seen very positive outcomes in Arizona, and because of this we are now looking to expand it to our other sites. Managing a closed mine is not easy, but at BHP, our goal is clear: we want to reimagine what is next for the site and co-create a positive and vibrant future for the land and the community who depend on this region. This is not something we can do alone. We will listen to and collaborate with our host communities, Indigenous populations, suppliers, employees and government stakeholders. Together we can create a positive future for Globe-Miami. u

As Mayor of the City of Globe for the past six years, I’m proud to serve a friendly, modern and lively rural community. We all enjoy the cooler temperatures, the many opportunities of a rural environment, an amazing historic downtown area, and the wonderful caring people.

The values of hard work and commitment that our community has learned from its heritage of mining and ranching are now serving us as we build a city for the future. All projects are made possible by the hard work and commitment of our staff to assure that the goals of our Council are met in accordance with our Strategic ActionWithPlan.the creation of our Economic Development Department in 2018, our city has been able to accelerate our efforts in economic development, tourism, and marketing. Several years ago, three key issues were identified in a community-wide study: quality of life, housing, and education. Our city has made many positive strides on quality of life by partnering with stakeholders to bring many recreational opportunities to our community. We are currently working with several investors and developers to bring new housing projects to Globe. We’re looking forward to the completion in 2024 of an approved $20 million affordable senior housing facility that will offer 64 units. Our City of Globe branding logo truly explains what our city is about. Globe’s brand is ARIZONA TO THE CORE. “C” stands for cuisine, recognizing the variety of foods offered in our local restaurants - Globe is known as having the best Mexican food in Arizona. “O” stands for the origin of our rich history of mining and ranching. Globe is the home of the first Governor of Arizona, George W.P. Hunt, and the first female Governor, Rose Mofford. “R” stands for recreation - such as the installation of new playground equipment, a newly remodeled Community Center Pool, our location in the scenic Pinal Mountains, the many hiking and ATV trails to enjoy, and fishing and boating at Roosevelt Lake. “E” stands for events: the many annual celebrations that are held throughout the year and the monthly First Friday events. As a Globe native, born and raised, I would like to personally invite you to visit and enjoy all that GlobeMiami has to offer.

I have been honored to serve with current City Council members who are forward-thinking and progressive. The vision of this Council has remained consistent and committed to building a strong and sustainable future for our city, both financially and for the quality of life of our residents. It is about imagining bigger opportunities and building relationships and partnerships to bring sustainable projects to fruition.

Located in the heart of Arizona, Globe is part of the Copper Corridor on Historic State Highway 60. Globe’s history has been shaped by mining, but its future is a multifaceted mother lode of potential, as our City Council prepares for growth and changes to Arizona’s economic landscape.Globe’s leadership maintains a focus on priorities that benefit business and residents alike, with an emphasis on infrastructure and quality of life. The City’s $42.5 million 2022/23 budget calls for the expansion of important City departments, including Public Works, Fire, and Police, as well as the construction of a new $8 million fire station to replace the over-100-year-old current facility.

A City focused on smart growth and quality of life

60 WORK 2022-2023

Current and near-future investments in physical infrastructure include the replacement of the Connie’s Bridge, which will improve access to the City from the south and mitigate flooding during periods of heavy rain, and the expansion of sewer capacity to the northeast of the city.

Through its strategic vision and with an eye firmly on the future, the City of Globe is poised to welcome community investment from businesses relocating to the Cobre Valley and families seeking a great quality of life in a rural community. Our Economic & Community Development Department will play a crucial role as we create a modern and agile economic model that can withstand the challenges of the 21st century.

Given Globe’s central location and ease of access from both the Valley of the Sun and cities in the eastern portion of the state, our workforce is drawn not only from Gila County’s labor force of 19,950 people but also from neighboring counties and cities.

LINDA ODDONETTO

Given its geographical situation, Globe has faced long-standing limitations with regard to its housing stock. Housing represents a top priority for City leadership. The City’s 2020-2023 Strategic Action Plan calls for increases in affordable and workforce housing opportunities in the region, in addition to the diversification of our local economy.

Among the initiatives aimed at increasing housing stock already underway is the recent investment by Gorman & Company for its Hill Street project, a $17.5 million housing project that restores life to a venerable building and will also provide much-needed affordable housing for seniors. The project is the very first rural housing project that has been awarded tax credits by the State of Arizona.

Near-term investments by the City to enhance quality of life include a new community pool that will serve the region’s nearly 30,000 residents and enhancements to the City’s overall parks and recreation inventory.

The ongoing revitalization of the central business district has been enhanced by gains made in historic preservation, working hand in hand with businessGlobedevelopment.isacityproud of its heritage in mining, ranching, and Southwestern culture but proud too of its ambition, resilience, and commitment to growth. We invite you to reach out to the Economic & Community Development Department as you look toward your own next steps.

As a crossroads for eastern Arizona, the seat of Gila County government, and a regional economic center, Globe has long enjoyed thriving tourism. Building on that foundation, Globe recently launched a “Go to Globe” marketing campaign to boost postpandemic tourism. “First Friday” events are bringing local residents as well as visitors to enjoy our historic downtown district, and annual events such as the holiday Festival of Lights and spring PoppyFest draw crowds of Recognizingthousands.theimportance of the arts, the City is supporting a number of projects, including large murals in and around Globe and the new “Stairizona” project, both spearheaded by the local arts organization I ART GLOBE. Updated lighting and new sidewalks in the downtown district are slated for the coming year. And to enhance the year-round walkability of the Historic District, grants from community partners are making possible the installation of water stations throughout the urban walking area downtown.

muralS celebrate San Carlos Apache culture AND THE HISTORY OF Downtown Globe

36ft Mural Celebrates Globe History

The mural by San Carlos artist, Douglas Miiles, was commissioned by Kathy Ryan, owner of United Jewelry, and her son Patrick in June of 2021. It was the first large-scale mural in the historic district to be done within the last decade. Miiles is a nationally recognized artist, entrepreneur and activist with work in LA, New York, San Franciso. “We wanted to acknowledge the importance of the San Carlos Apache people to Globe’s own history, and we knew Douglas Miiles was the artist who could do that,” says Patrick. u

The large mural you see as you enter Broad Street was underwritten by Tanner Hunsaker, owner of Western Reprographics. The artist Chris Carnahan, an emplyee of Hunsaker, referenced historical photographs and worked with digital tools, oil paints and ink applications to create the mural.

By Autumn Giles “Arizona is amazing,” says Tom Foster, executive director of Bullion Plaza in Miami. “Arizona is just this great repository of pretty much anything you can ever think of in the way of minerals. Not only stuff that is marketable, like copper and gold and silver, just all sorts of really neat things.”

2022-2023

Globe | 928-425-3637 | Tues–Sat 10am-5pm ~ Fabulous Jewelry and Accessories ~ ~ Unique Gourmet, Garden and Gift ~ ~ Artisan Natural Fiber Clothing ~ ~ Heavenly Scented and Organic Beauty ~ “Quality goods for a life well lived.” Bullion Plaza Museum Features the Gems of Gila County QUARTZ FROM THE PINAL MOUNTAINS, GILA COUNTY

Statewide, but particularly in Gila County, many of the gems and minerals in the area are quite literally brought to the surface by copper mining. As Wolfgang Mueller, curator of gems for Bullion Plaza, writes in a 2012 issue of Rocks & Minerals, “The geological processes responsible for the copper ore deposits have set much of the stage for the grand collection of gemstones found here.” Among the “grand collection” are azurite, malachite, chrysocolla, gem chrysocolla, turquoise, jasper, quartz, tourmaline, bohmeite, amethyst, apache tears, argillite, and jasper. However, Foster offers a reminder that the minerals were there long before the mines. He recalls a story told to him by an Arizona archaeologist that “wherever you find interesting minerals—wherever you find pretty rocks—you find a lot of early habitation.” The minerals had layers of significance to early inhabitants. “There was a religious connotation that went with it, there were elements of healing, elements of different energies and they appreciated that and they understood to a certain extent. This was long before we ever figured out crystal radios or the power of quartz.” Foster stops short of saying there’s an absolute correlation, but the connection is there. Mueller says that “a lot of the minerals came out of these mines early as they were developing. As they progressed, the neat stuff is gone.” There’s a geological explanation for why things like azurite and malachite, for example, are found early in the life of a copper mine. Azurite and malachite were formed by processes that took place roughly two million years ago, whereas chalcopyrite, the primary copper mineral, was introduced into the ground roughly 50 million years ago. In order to get to the chalcopyrite, you’re likely to encounter azurite and malachite. According to Mueller, “You’re going to hit the azurite and malachite first, and those have very high copper content. So with a relatively primitive melting process—I think actually if you know what you’re doing you can get copper out of that sort of stuff over your campfire.” At the beginning of the life of a copper mine, or when a pit is expanded, these secondary gems and minerals are more plentiful. Azurite is named for its azure blue color and, like malachite, has been worn as adornment and also ground up finely and used as pigment for thousands of years. Other minerals that the area is known for, such as jasper, are not so hard to come by. “We have a fair amount of jasper,” says Mueller. The jasper occurs in what is known as the Escabrosa Formation, which Mueller says is visible driving south from Globe to Tucson. “If you’re driving from Oracle to Globe in the Winkelman area and you get into the canyon, you see the bottom of that [jasper] exposed, which is all the reddish stuff.” Jasper usually contains some variation in color such as striations or spots. Broad Street,

701 South

Until 2012, the Sleeping Beauty Mine outside of Globe was world-renowned for its turquoise, which is also often a byproduct of copper mining. After forty years producing both copper and turquoise, the mine phased out its turquoise production. Before it closed it was the world’s largest producer of natural turquoise. Turquoise is still produced near Kingman, AZ. Amethyst still comes out of the Four Peaks region, and according to Mueller, “When you have the good stuff it’s as good as any you’ll find in the world.” Amethyst, a type of quartz, ranges from deep purple to a lighter lilac color. In addition to being used for jewelry, amethyst has been prized for its talismanic qualities throughout history. Closer to home, quartz and tourmaline can be found in the Pinal Mountains, both of which occur in a wide array of colors. San Carlos is widely known for its peridot. Peridot is the name used for gem-quality specimens of the mineral olivine. It is one of the few gems that only occurs in one color, its signature olive green.

The mineral hallway at Bullion Plaza in Miami displays some 25 different specimens from the Arizona Historical Society, and they’re all from Globe, Miami and San Carlos, says Foster. Thanks to Jodi Brewster of the Gila County Gem and Mineral Society, the hallway also features an interactive fluorescent mineral display. [1] Miami Mercantile/YMCA

Built in 1917, with construction funded by the Miami Copper Company. This is one of only two buildings in Miami built in the Neoclassical style; the other is Bullion Plaza Museum. The YMCA had the first indoor heated swimming pool west of the Mississippi. It also had a bowling alley, basketball court, and 24 private rooms for rent.

[2] Wilson Home Center/ Dacite

Constructed in 1815, this building originally housed a savings and loan that had a walk-in vault (still in use at the store). In later years it housed the Miami edition of the Silver Belt newspaper.

The ground floor began life as Garcia and Sons Furniture and was connected to the building on the west. It later became part of Franco Furniture and then Wilson’s Home Center. The upstairs began as a brothel, and in the 1950s became a boarding house named the Glenn Hotel. Around the same time, the balcony was sawn off and the exterior was covered with stucco. The façade was restored in 2015.

Built around 1925, this structure has housed Miami’s Electric Company, an appliance store, and Eddie’s Show Store. Next door, the Popular building, built in 1919, housed an upscale men’s haberdashery. During Prohibition, a speakeasy flourished in the basement.

The original building, constructed in 1909, served as the real estate office for Cleve Van Dyke, one of the founders of Miami. It burned down around 1910 or 1911 in a fire that destroyed most of the wooden buildings in Miami. It was rebuilt in 1973 and housed a barber shop. The painting was done by a local artist as a tribute to the Apache Tribe. His signature is visible from the roof of the barber shop.

[5] Neotat/Fitzpatrick Building Keystone Avenue is Miami’s oldest building, constructed in 1909 by John Fitzpatrick. At one time it housed the Miner’s Saloon, which closed when Prohibition was passed. Rooms upstairs were rented to miners. The Fitzpatrick Building was the first concrete building in Miami. Virtually all buildings from 1911 forward were constructed of concrete because a town ordinance banned frame structures after several fires in the downtown district. Concrete construction was also about 20% less expensive than brick.

[8] Copper Miners' Rest

Grand Lobby for corporate and private events

Constructed between 1920 and 1928, these bridges are simple Luten arch structures with a single, yet important, ornamental feature: balusters executed in the Neoclassical Revival style. The bridges are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

[10] Divine Grace Presbyterian Church 307 Live Oak. Built in 1920 and designed by the firm of Trost & Trost, the church is said to resemble the Mount Sinai Temple in El Paso, Texas. It is considered an Eclectic building due to its modernized interpretation of the Mission style.

The Soderman Building was originally built in 1910 of wood and then rebuilt in concrete between 1917 and 1920. The main floor included the Wasa Bar, and the second story was a rooming house for Scandinavian miners. The building had a Finnish sauna, open to the public. During Prohibition, the bar was moved to the basement and served as a speakeasy.

[5] Former Soda Pop’s Antiques and Soda Fountain/ Miami Art Works #505 was built in 1913 and first known as the Miami Townsite Building. An addition (#503) was constructed in 1915. The second floor housed assayers’ offices, the Miami Title Company, and Cleve Van Dyke’s offices. Nader’s Emporium, an upscale clothing store, occupied the first floor. #503 housed a confectionary store and a Western Union office.

Formerly Bullion Plaza School, the building opened in 1923 as a grammar school for MexicanAmerican and Apache children. After desegregation in the 1950s, it served as a public school until 1994. The building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It now houses exhibits on geology, mining, ranching, and the history of the Miami area, including fascinating exhibits about Miami’s cultural heritage.

Globe’s Historic District is a six-block section of Broad Street, home to many iconic structures, most built between 1906 and 1916, when copper was booming and rail transportation brought goods, services and investment from the East. Leading architects of the time, quality materials from the East and visionary entrepreneurs ensured the structures would stand the test of time. Here are a few of the historic buildings you’ll see on Broad Street. For a complete list, please visit the Gila Historical Museum for Bill Haak’s book on Globe’s historic buildings.

[6] Gila County Court House/ Center for the Arts 100 N. Broad Street. This gorgeous structure was constructed in 1907 to house the County Courthouse. It is said the many steps leading to the third-floor courtroom allowed a guilty man to ponder his sins. After that, he was led across the catwalk to the old jail. Built of a locally quarried stone, dacite, at a cost of $40,000. Today the building houses the Cobre Valley Center for the Arts.

[7] Woolworth Building/United Jewelry 127 N. Broad Street. Originally constructed in 1909 of fired red brick by the Sultan brothers for their dry goods business. The Woolworth Company moved into the building in 1916. After a fire gutted the upper floor in 1935, a new Art Deco façade was designed and the building was taken down to just one floor. Woolworth’s remained in the space until 1993, when it was the last of nearly 400 stores to close.

Completed in 1920 and built in the shape of the state of Arizona, this building was the original location of the local Pay ’n Takit grocery store (see the alley off Sycamore for the originally painted ad), which later merged with several other stores and became the familiar Safeway chain.

[1] Holy Angels Catholic Church 201 S. Broad Street. Built between 1916 and 1918 as funds were available. Father Guenevrier himself supervised every detail of the construction. Emil Frei, one of the nation’s foremost artisans in stained glass, designed the eight large windows that grace the interior. Local families sponsored each window.

[2] Old Dominion Warehouse/ Pickle Barrel Trading Post 404 S. Broad Street. Constructed in 1903 of muriel cement blocks, this building originally served as the railroad warehouse for the Old Dominion General Store. Today it is home to the trading post, which displays a large charcoal portrait of Geronimo done by Frank Balaam.

The building was designed by Trost & Trost and constructed in 1916 to house an expanded passenger depot and executive offices. It underwent major restoration work between 2006 and 2010, and served the Copper Spike Excursion Train until 2012. The depot now hosts community events.

[5] Family Fellowship Church Corner of Hill & Oak Street. The local Baptist community constructed this impressive church in 1917 of native tufa stone, carved by Mexican stonecutters at the quarry near San Carlos.

[13] Former Tonto Hotel This building stands on the site of the old Murphy Hotel, constructed before 1898. The Hactels purchased the Murphy Hotel and built the four-story Tonto Hotel in 1916. The hotel was closed in the 1970s, and the building is now vacant. In the 1950s nearly 16 feet of the façade were sheared off to make room for the widening of Broad Street.

[10] Old Dominion Mercantile 190 N. Broad Street. This structure was built in 1904 to house the highly successful enterprise of the Old Dominion Commercial Company. Its delivery boy would go on to become Arizona’s first governor. George W. P. Hunt went to work for the mercantile in 1890 at $60 per week. By 1904 he was managing the company and oversaw the construction of a new site. Hunt was elected governor in 1912.

[16] Sang Tai Restaurant/Former Jammerz Bar 576 Broad Street. Constructed in 1905, this is the only remaining building of Globe’s early Chinese settlers.Dea Gin Foo and his brother bought the block on Broad in 1899 for $10,000. For Chinese immigrants, this purchase was exceptional at the time for its size and audacity. Dea Gin Foo went on to become a successful restaurant owner who counted as friends the likes of George Hunt and E.F. Kellner. His son, George Dea, later ran the Star Buffet next door.

[8] Amster Building/CVC Pharmacy 104 N. Broad Street. Constructed in 1909 of fired red brick and cast metal cornices, this structure housed the Ryan-Evans drug store, considered one of the finest in the Territory. It was completely restored in the ’90s. Today it’s home to CVS Pharmacy and Thompson & DeRose Attorneys.

[14] Hitchcock Building/ For Sale 286 N. Broad Street. One of the oldest buildings on Broad Street, this structure is believed to have been built in 1880 by Hitchcock & Company, wholesale and retail druggists who sold fancy goods and fine liquors “for medicinal purposes.” A brothel operated in the second story. Recently it was completely renovated and is now on the market.

Trust Company of Solomonville, the building was designed by Chicago architects Adler & Sullivan. (Sullivan was a mentor to Frank Lloyd Wright.) The design reflects the Beaux-Arts Neoclassical style and uses heavily ornamented terra cotta blocks. In a field of impressive structures built between 1905 and 1916, this is perhaps the most beautifully detailed building on Broad Street, reflecting the architectural genius of Adler & Sullivan. Valley National Bank moved into the building 1952. Today it is occupied by Dominion Cutting Company.

[17] International House/Drift Inn Saloon (16) 636 N. Broad Street. Constructed in 1902 by the Rabogliatti brothers, this building was constructed of adobe bricks and featured decorative pressed metal around the windows. A punched tin ceiling and other elegant details inspired one observer to claim this 6,000 square foot structure “the largest and finest new commercial building on Broad.” It has served as a brothel (with 20 cribs along the halls), as well as a bar, a barbershop, and a cafe. It later housed the Owl Bar and Blackie’s Tavern before becoming the Drift Inn in the 1980s. u istoric D istrict

Constructed in 1912 on the former site of Wiley’s Saloon, this building served as lodge headquarters for the White Mountain Lodge #3 and the Free and Accepted Masons, established in 1881. The upper floor houses the Lodge, and the lower floors were designed to accommodate multiple businesses.

I Art Globe was first conceived to blitz Globe with 12 public art projects in 12 months. During the pandemic, people were often socially isolated, scared, and hopeless. Life lost color as people stayed home. Some individuals were grieving the death of loved ones, lost jobs, and lost housing. People were hurting. Deciding it was time to infuse life and hope back into our community, Thea Wilshire identified art as the Art positively impacts communities and individuals, strengthens physical and emotional health, and improves well-being. For towns and cities, art provides economic, educational, social, and cultural benefits. Art builds invaluable social infrastructure and is an essential ingredient in placemaking. And the community was already asking for public art. Just before the pandemic hit, the City of Globe sponsored community forums and town hall meetings where participants expressed strong support for public art. Groups contributed art ideas in community meetings, and the community loved them. Bottom line: Globe residents wanted to see more art!

Globe,

I Art Globe’s two biggest projects are a downtown murals initiative and the creation of the Stairizona Trail. (See page 94.)

I Art Globe also proposed the idea of interactive murals, and then supported Mayor Gameros as he organized the 11 Instagram mini-murals downtown.

Coming along to keep the momentum going, I Art Globe was created to provide leadership to volunteers ready and willing to help, allowing connection to others and reconnection with the community.

Because the benefits of art were needed immediately to balance the acute challenges of the pandemic, I Art Globe focused on Globe gateways and the historic downtown to reach the most people. Projects were chosen that could be completed easily and quickly. Almost 60 projects were identified in visual arts, music, cinema, word artistry, and participatory events. From these, 30 projects had champions (key organizers), so they were tapped to start. I Art Globe hoped to finish 12 to 18 projects - and then surpassed this by completing 26 art projects and sponsoring nine participatory art events during the 12 months of the initiative. I Art Globe also started working on 13 other projects that are currently in the works. Among its notable accomplishments, I Art Globe sponsored a Chalk-a-thon and two self-guided art tours, collaborated with the US Forest Service to offer Nature Art for kids, and partnered with the Friends of the Dog Park to bring art there.

I Art Globe supported the VFW and Globe High School in painting the VFW crosswalk, worked with the Gila County Historical Society to create a colorful eightpanel timeline for Globe, and helped sponsor Nate Rector’s “Voice of Globe” singing contest - which has morphed into a regular First Friday karaoke event.

The Cobre Valley Center for the Arts agreed to be the nonprofit fiscal sponsor. To find participants, public announcements were made and invitations were sent to 78 groups and individuals. A cross-sectional I Art Globe group was formed and began weekly planning sessions via Zoom.

With a generous $10,000 grant from Peter Beesley, I Art Globe is supporting five collaborative murals in the historic downtown. The first completed was Myron Starr’s “Welcome to Globe” wall at the corner of Pine and Oak, sponsored by Carol Hinderberger with Diamond M Dental. Two more planned murals have been adopted by sponsors. As was hoped when the I Art Globe initiative started, art has provided light in a time of darkness. With the help of community volunteers, the art will continue, and the light will grow brighter. 425-7656 N Broad Street AZ 85501

The Salt River is a major river in the spectacular Sonoran Desert, and a large portion of it passes through southern Gila County. Whitewater rafting on the Salt is legendary – thanks in part to the incredible scenery and wildlife on view. Salt River Canyon has been likened to a miniature Grand Canyon, with massive cliffs rising on either side of the river as you navigate through solid class III and IV rapids. Four rafting companies work the Salt each year (see box). The put-in is located approximately 45 minutes from Globe, and many visitors book a day on the river and a day for exploring Globe-Miami. With a season typically running from early March through mid-April, depending on rain and snow packs, the Upper Salt provides the United States’ first whitewater rafting trip of the year. Nowhere else in the country can you raft in March. The key is water flow, and there are years when the river doesn’t run high enough for rafting – so any trip on the Upper Salt should be treasured.

Roosevelt Lake is located just 30 miles from downtown Globe, 80 miles east of Phoenix, and 150 miles north of Tucson. Covering approximately 22,000 acres near the confluence of Tonto Creek and the Salt River, it offers a range of recreational opportunities. For the fishermen, the lake is stocked with bass, trout, crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, and pan fish. Roosevelt Lake has been the site of many recordsetting catches. You can also launch your sailboat or power up your jet skis or waterskis, or kick back on a houseboat to enjoy life on theThewater.Roosevelt Lake Marina is centrally located between two inlets just two miles east of the dam. The marina is equipped with a paved boat launch ramp and fuel dock, and offers boat storage. Kayak and houseboat rentals are available, but reservations are highly recommended. You’ll also find a store, an open-air bar, and a barbecue area at the marina.

BESH BA GOWAH Experience Southwestern History BY KENNETH CHAN

Globe-Miami Community Guide DISCOVER 93

A top-10 attraction in the Globe-Miami area, Besh Ba Gowah offers a not-to-be-missed immersive experience of ancient Southwestern history and culture. One of the most significant finds of Southwestern archaeology, these partially restored ruins allow visitors to walk among the corridors, plazas and buildings of a people who occupied the Globe and Tonto Basin area centuries before Columbus arrived in the New World. The Besh complex comprises some 200 rooms, as well as ethnobotanical gardens where visitors can see how the Salado people grew and prepared food. The museum holds a significant collection of Salado pottery, textiles, and stone artifacts. During the one-night-only Festival of Lights, thousands of luminarias light the walls, turning the ruins into a breathtaking place of magic and beauty. The Festival of Lights takes place every year in early or mid-December.Beshwasdiscovered and mapped in 1883 by the explorer Adolph Bandolier. Between 1935 and 1946, the pioneering female archaeologist Irene Vickrey supervised the site’s excavation, a project of the WPA.

Besh Ba Gowah is located at 1324 S. Jesse Hayes Road. There is an admission fee, and the museum is closed Mondays and Tuesdays in the summer. Although the ground within the ruins is unpaved and uneven, the site is wheelchair accessible. For more information, call the museum at (928) 425-0320.

By Thea Wilshire

Globe Mayor Al Gameros has adopted the Sutherland pedestrian bridge. Gameros has also invested $1,000 from an Arizona Creative Communities Initiative grant to purchase copper paint to repaint the bridge.

Welcome to the Stairizona Trail

Local artist Rob Portero completed the Gila monster and poppy mural at the top of the stairs, and another local artist, Jim Ohl, started a creative lighting project, which unfortunately was derailed due to the historic nature of the site. Next, BHP awarded $50,000 to continue adding art along the trail. Artistic benches have been ordered (including one with a Chinese design to honor the former location of Chinatown), and artist Katie Stewart was hired to create a quail-themed mosaic on the Yuma staircase.

The BHP grant will also fund murals on the Sutherland wall (leading to the footbridge), Sutherland Stairs, East Street Stairs, Sycamore Street wall (between the East and High staircases), and High Street Stairs.

President Franklin Roosevelt created the WPA to combat the joblessness and despair of the Great Depression. Employing 8.5 million workers, the WPA focused primarily on the construction of roads, parks, schools, and public buildings. Globe was a base for a large WPA crew who created many public safety and recreation features in the Globe-Miami area, in the Tonto National Forest - including the CCC camp and the Kellner Canyon Picnic Area - and even Besh ba Gowah.   Highlighting the history of the WPA in Globe is a secondary benefit to creating this outdoor walking route for the community. Borrowing a name Dezi Baker coined a decade ago, the Stairizona Trail was proposed, and Regina Ortega stepped in as the champion overseeing the project. The proposed route is designed around the historic staircases, a pedestrian bridge, and art. I Art Globe committee members selected a theme of flora and fauna that will unify all the trail art. Community members were asked for input, and people loved the initial concept. They pushed to include other staircases and another footbridge not part of the original design. In response, both a 1.5-mile and a 2.5-mile route were designed. Then additional residents asked for inclusion of the stairs and bridge near the “G” and also wanted to include the historic cemetery, so a third route was mapped. With the routes roughed out, I Art Globe began fundraising, with plans to install art along the route one piece at a time. Since the City intends to build a playground, skate park, and parking lot on the site of the former Pascoe Livery on Broad Street, this site made the most sense for a future trailhead, so the art started here.

In early 2022, Globe residents and visitors temporarily lost access to trails in the national forest and the Old Dominion Historic Mining Park. To compensate, volunteers with the local public art initiative I Art Globe proposed a creative solution: an art-filled urban trail good for the body and the soul. Several routes were discussed, and finally the organizers landed on a unique alternative: a trail featuring the hidden, historic concrete staircases scattered throughout the neighborhoods surrounding Globe’s downtown.

The Stairizona project is bringing back a series of old concrete stairs connecting Globe's residential district with Broad Street. Included in this is new erosion control, landscaping, painted handrails, and a variety of murals and mosaics which will enhance each set of stairs.

|

As of July 2022, I Art Globe is awaiting approval of designs submitted to the City of Globe for three additional painting projects - one of which will be completed by community volunteers if approved. The Sycamore Street wall mural is scheduled to be finished in July by Averian Chee, who will paint an impressionistic landscape on this massive wall.   Keep your eye on the Stairizona Trail as new art arrives over the coming year. And please volunteer if you can, to help create more beauty! u

Many longtime residents have been amazed to learn of the existence of these staircases, some located only half a block from their own homes. Other residents have been asking for maintenance of these historic stairs for decades and felt these were an untapped community gem. The staircases were built in the mid-1930s by federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) workers. They formalized routes that historians think residents first created as shortcuts for getting around town. The Stairizona Trail includes these staircases, as well as sidewalks and huge retaining walls created by WPA workers. The WPA stamp can be seen everywhere once a person knows to look for it.

Freeport McMoRan jump-started the project with a $10,000 grant to begin three art projects on the first staircase - an 82-step monster now named the Pascoe Stairs. Brandt Woods painted a cascading poppy design, where each step has the number of flowers corresponding to its location, resulting in more than 3,400 flowers in this mural.
