Latest trends Demand for seafood is slowing in the European market, as inflation is passed on to consumers. In a recent study on the impact of the Ukraine conflict on European Union consumer behaviour, it was found that 50 percent of the interviewed felt fish prices went up strongly. Fish was thus second only to red meat among all food products where such price increases were seen. As a reaction to these high prices, 30 percent of the respondents reported lower purchases of fish, 8 percent said they stopped buying fish altogether.

Index for prices

The traders started buying for the Holy Week, which is the first week of April this year. Prices continued to move up, despite limited demand. In this European Fish Price Report issue, some 32 percent of the fish prices moved up, 24 percent moved down, and 43 percent stayed stable. Shrimp and octopus are the main exceptions to the upward price spiral, reporting important price cuts. The container cost index has decreased by 3 percent in the first week of March and has dropped by 80 percent when compared with the same week last year. The index is USD 1 806 per 40-foot container, 83 percent below the peak of USD 10 377 reached in September 2021. It is even 33 percent lower than the 10-year average of USD 2 691, indicating a return to more normal prices, but remains 27 percent higher than average 2019 (pre-pandemic) rates of USD 1 420. basins. The Global Container Freight Index (FBX) quoted USD 2 214 on 27 January 2023 compared to USD 19 806 in January 2022. GROUNDFISH Groundfish catches in the Atlantic and the Pacific are performing well at the moment. Alaska pollock catches are very good in the United States of America. Cod prices show a timid decline this month after reaching sky-high levels during the last months. Traders expect that consumers and processors will shift from expensive cod to lower priced Alaska pollack, which is currently in good supply. Hake and Alaska Pollock blocks’ demand remains very strong. The start of the new A23 Alaska pollack season in the United States of America might lead to price declines, but this all depends on the evolution of prices in the Russian Federation. Demand for salted or dried cod is slow at the moment. There are hardly any stocks in the storage left. Prices are stable but are likely to increase in preparation for the Holy Week, which will occur in early April. High cod prices make farming attractive. Norway is expected to produce some 10 000 tonnes of farmed cod this year – still a small amount when compared with wild cod catches.

TUNA - BILLFISHES Fishing in the Western and Central Pacific continues to be very poor. The skipjack price rebounded sharply in early March. However, with the weak finished goods demand, local canneries are slowing production to reduce their raw material purchases at high prices.

Catches in the Indian Ocean remain moderate, and some cargoes continue to Skipjack Bangkok CFR Skipjack Ecuador, ex-vessel be transhipped to carriers and diverted to other markets. Following the gains in Bangkok, the skipjack price increased. The yellowfin price also went up.

TUNA - BILLFISHES The 72-day International Commission for

the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) Fish aggregating device (FAD) closure in the Atlantic Ocean ended on 13 March. Fishing continues to be poor throughout the FAD closure period, and local canneries report shortages in raw materials. Skipjack prices declined while yellowfin prices remained stable.

Fishing in the Eastern Pacific Ocean is reported to be good, and fishing efforts continue to increase, with about 70 percent of the fleet outfishing. Skipjack prices remained stable and were below Bangkok prices for the first time in recent history. Yellowfin prices increased slightly. European prices for both skipjack and yellowfin remained stable. However, due to lower demands, the indicative price for cooked, single-cleaned skipjack loins continued to fall. TUNA - Loins

CEPHALOPODS Fishing was strong in the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) in the first week of March. Some 7 500 tonnes of Loligo squid were landed, and 6 500 tonnes of Illex squid. Catches of squid remain poor in South Africa, but there has been a good improvement in prices, made better by the fact that the South African Rand has weakened relative to the Euro. Octopus season in Indonesia is coming to a close, but demand is still dull from Japan, the European Union, and the United States of America. Octopus is one of the few fish products for which lower prices were reported this month.

CRUSTACEANS Argentine shrimp had a solid start of the year. Some 42 500 tonnes were landed in the first six weeks of the year, a ARGENTINA RED SHRIMP - origin: Argentina record result. Despite this, prices trended upwards in March, EUR/kg expecting strong demand during 10.5 9.0 the Holy week (first week of April). 7.5 Prices of large shrimp (10/20 6.0 count) increased by EUR 0.50 per 4.5 kg, while smaller shrimp reported 3.0 stable price levels. Thus big shrimp are again commanding higher > 10-20 pc/kg > 30-40 > 40-60 prices than small ones, which is normal, while last month, all sizes were offered at the same price level.

CRUSTACEANS (cont.) The shrimp supply has gradually decreased due to delayed baby shrimp, weather, and disease attacks. In the meantime, Indonesian farmers avoided harvest time during the Ramadhan holiday. Currently, CRAB - in France, origin: Europe big-size shrimp is quite limited, but the small size is the contrary. Demand for lobster and crab is strong in Europe, while production is seasonally low. As a result, prices for both species are going up at the moment.

BIVALVES The bouchot mussel professionals are a community that covers the regions from the Hauts de France to Nouvelle Aquitaine via Normandy, Brittany and the Loire area. These producers are specialized in the MUSSEL BOUCHOT - in France traditional cultivation and harvesting of these very special mussels. They are EUR/kg 7.0 highly qualified and renowned for their 6.5 know-how and dedication to their 6.0 5.5 profession. Three hundred twenty 5.0 4.5 producers are growing bouchot mussels. 4.0 3.5 Last year some 45 000 tonnes were 3.0 produced, and some 1.6 million mussels were seeded on 11 000 kilometres of Monthly average consumer prices in metropolitan France rope.

Bouchot mussels command a higher price than the other mussels available in the French market. Traditionally spring is the off-season for bouchot mussels, which will return to the market only in July. During this period, Spanish and Italian mussels supply the French market well. Bivalve prices are quite stable after the strong increases experienced last year.

SMALL PELAGICS In 2022, high fishmeal and fish oil prices attracted small pelagic supplies from Norway towards this market segment. This was also caused by high fuel prices, which makes going for fish for reduction purposes more attractive, as the boats do not have to return to harbours so often as when the fish is directed towards human consumption.

In general, small pelagic prices went down in March, a standard feature for this time of the year, when catches return to normal after the winter months.

FRESHWATER Poland is an important market for pangasius fillets. In the first eleven months of 2022, imports reached 5 000 tonnes, all coming from Viet Nam. This quantity is about 150 tonnes more than in the same period of 2021. The unit value of this product went up sharply to reach USD 2.90 per kg in November 2022, some USD 1.00 per kg more than one year earlier. As a result, the total value of pangasius imports into Poland reached a new record of USD 13.6 million in the first eleven months of 2022, some USD 4.2 million more than in the same period of 2021.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Pangasius - in dethawed Italy, origin: fillets Viet Nam Northern Ireland imported record USD/kg quantities of frozen pangasius fillets in 6.0 5.8 5.5 2022. Some 14 000 tonnes were 5.3 5.0 4.8 imported, mainly from Viet Nam, 1 000 4.5 4.3 4.0 tonnes more than in 2021. In the country, frozen dethawed fillets pangasius fillets are mainly used to replace expensive cod in fish and chips preparations. 6

FRESHWATER (cont.) After some years of reduction, Spain recovered its position as the main frozen pangasius fillets importer among EU countries. In 2022, the import value reached USD 22 million, double the amount reported for 2021. The figure is still far off the record USD 77 million in 2014, but the trend is going up again.

SALMON Prices for Norwegian farmed Atlantic salmon continue the upward trend since the NOK 77.58 per kg was monitored in week 3 of 2023. According to the NASDAQ Atlantic Salmon Index (2-3 kg), in March, the price reached NOK 106.10 (week 11 of 2023), up 25 percent from the previous month.

The Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) 4-5 kg 6-7 figures show that during February, Norway exported 81 645 tonnes of salmon worth NOK 8.8 billion, which meant a decline of 8 percent in volume but a considerable increase of 15 percent in value. The first figure is explained due to a lower catch volume, while high price growth and a weak Norwegian krone explain the latter. The three main markets for Norwegian salmon continued to be the United States of America, Poland and France. The US market registered the most significant increase in value in the month, with an export value of NOK 432 million, or 77 percent, compared to the same month last year, and 6 604 tonnes, up 41 percent compared to February 2022. According to NSC analysts, this is explained due to demand growth combined with a strong currency and a weak development over time in salmon production in other supplier nations. It is important to highlight the increased demand for salmon in China, the second largest growth market after the US market in February. With the consequences of the pandemic behind and the strong demand for fresh salmon registered, the Asian giant offers an encouraging development. On the other hand, Japan was the market with more significant declines due to the substantial increase in shipping costs due to closed Russian airspace.

TROUT Norwegian trout exports during February 2023 accounted for 2 946 tonnes worth NOK 325 million, which meant a sharp decline of 26 percent in volume but a slight fall of 1 percent in value compared to February last year. According to NSC, that is a record high price for fresh whole trout at NOK 106 per kg, around NOK 4 higher than the previous record month, May 2022. The top three markets for trout in February were the United States of America, Thailand and Japan. The latter surpassed Lithuania, although Lithuania had the largest increase in the export value in February, up NOK 28 million compared to the same month last year.

SEABASS AND SEABREAM Having risen considerably in the first two months of the year, March prices for both seabass and seabream are high and stable. Türkiye, the leading producer of both species, has seen a drop in export volumes over the last few months, leaving a supply deficit of several thousand tonnes and putting significant pressure on stocks. The deficit is especially pronounced for seabass, which was already in relatively tight supply. Turkish seabass and seabream production started increasing rapidly Seabass fresh whole 300-450 gr/pc Seabream fresh whole 300-450 gr/pc over a decade ago, and in 2016 output overtook Greek harvests. Much of this increased production has been destined for export, especially seabream, which sees 60 percent of production exported. While seabass exports are significant, most remain in the domestic market, with 30 percent of production exported. While it is too early to say conclusively what factor is behind the low export volumes in 2023, there has been strong growth in domestic consumption in recent years. So far this year, the proportion of harvests destined for the domestic market has increased significantly; as long as this continues, European supplies of seabass and seabream will likely remain tight.

SEABASS AND SEABREAM (cont.) While farmed seabass and seabream make up the vast majority of the supply, it is interesting to note that wild-caught fish supplies have fluctuated dramatically in recent years. In Mercamadrid, a large Spanish wholesale market, volumes of wild-caught seabass sold this year are close to a third of 2021 levels, having fallen to 42 tonnes. At the same time, sales of wild-caught seabream have roughly doubled since 2021 to 38 tonnes. Prices for both are currently low, at EUR 18.00 per kg for seabass (-40 percent at the beginning of the year), and EUR 19.00 per kg for seabream (-14 percent at the beginning of the year).
