Intro to GlobalPhilly™ 2019 Welcome to GlobalPhilly19! The fourth iteration of our Global Expo is designed to show the international activity of our residents and the global reach of Philadelphia and the region. In these exceptional times for Philadelphia, we are delighted to showcase the work of the members of Global Philadelphia Association and the contribution they make to the city’s global fabric. The events contribute to an evolving story, that of an increasing presence on the world stage for Philadelphia. The GlobalPhilly™ 2019 Passport leads you to over 100 events presented by the members of Global Philadelphia Association. With something to suit all, the events are identified by 16 categories (details on page 04). Inside, you will also begin to learn a little about the progress that has occurred since Philadelphia was designated as America’s first World Heritage City. On page (05), you can find more information on this designation, the resources we currently have available for you and what you can expect to see from the project in the future. Pre-Expo Events Hidden Lives Illuminated
Presenter: Eastern State Penitentiary Date: Aug 15 (multiple dates), 7:00 p.m. Location: Eastern State Penitentiary, 2027 Fairmount Avenue, Philadelphia, PA Cost: Free Open to the public Hidden Lives Illuminated will bring the often invisible stories of people living in prisons to light against the backdrop of Eastern State Penitentiary’s dramatic stone walls. The series will feature nightly screenings of newly commissioned, animated short films created by currently incarcerated artists living in Pennsylvania correctional institutions. Age of Alchemy
Presenter: Science History Institute Date: Aug 31 (multiple dates), 10:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. Location: Science History Institute, 315 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA Cost: Free Open to the public A selection of paintings, most from the 17th century, reveal alchemy’s golden age. It was an era of experimental discovery and practical skill in which physicians and chemists worked to heal the human body. They studied the secrets of the natural world and ushered in change, creativity, and scientific inquiry.
Information about the World Heritage Project UNITED STATES’ FIRST WORLD HERITAGE CITY Philadelphia joined the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC) on November 5, 2015, the first World Heritage City in the United States. It now joins a prestigious company of about 300 international OWHC cities.

THE WORLD HERITAGE CITY PROJECT The World Heritage City Project was established by the City of Philadelphia and Global Philadelphia Association (GPA). The Project was created as a community-built vision of what we would like to accomplish as a World Heritage City. The Project has 4 fundamental missions: 1. Preserving and Celebrating Philadelphia’s Historical and Cultural Assets 2. Educating Global Kids with Roots 3. Building World Heritage City Awareness and Ownership 4. Extending Philadelphia’s Global Reach WORLD HERITAGE RESOURCES FOR YOU Philadelphia World Heritage City Film: This 28-minute documentary was written and narrated by University of Pennsylvania Professor of History of Art, David B. Brownlee, Ph.D., FSAH, and produced and directed by filmmaker, Sam Katz, History Making Productions. It is available in 12 languages and can be viewed on the GPA website. Philadelphia World Heritage Coloring Book: This innovative and engaging publication, aimed at ages 5 – 11, features a diverse group of children visiting sites of historical and cultural importance throughout the city. Visit the GPA website for information on ordering your copies. Sponsors purchasing orders of 250 or more will have their logo prominently displayed on the back cover of each book in their order. The coloring book is also available in Spanish. Online Heritage Resource Center (LearnPhillyHeritage.org): This website includes a searchable listing of FREE and LOW-COST educational resources related to global education and Philadelphia heritage, as well as information on Philadelphia’s World Heritage City designation, event listings, professional development opportunities for educators, and much more. The World Heritage Tool Kit contains 29 model lesson plans for K-12 students and is available on the GPA website. Philadelphia Heritage Map: Designed by a local artist, this illustrated map features Philadelphia’s 67 National Historic Landmarks (NHLs) and is both a useful guide to the city’s rich heritage, as well as a unique souvenir or gift. An interactive Google Map of the NHLs, an online guide to the NHLs, and information on ordering the illustrated map are all available at globalphiladelphia.org/heritage-map.

Information on the World Heritage City Seal
The Philadelphia World Heritage City seal was designed for the World Heritage City Project by J2 Design Partnership in 2016. It has come to represent a city that is using a uniquely distinguished past to propel a dramatically new future. DOWNLOAD AND USE THE SEAL! The seal is open-source and available to download on the GPA website (globalphiladelphia.org). It can be adapted for incorporation into your website, correspondence, brochures, annual reports, promotional materials, etc. The only exception is that use is not authorized in connection with merchandise. SOS MISSION The Spread our Seal (SOS) campaign is designed to promote Philadelphia’s World Heritage City status through city-wide dissemination of non-adhesive window clings that feature Philadelphia’s Independence Hall. Independence Hall was the catalyst for Philadelphia receiving World Heritage City status in 2015. In addition, the seal was specifically designed to symbolize Philadelphia’s historical significance to the nation and the hope for future generations. Sustainable Development Goals The U.N.’s Habitat III Conference has set an ambitious agenda for mankind in the form of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Aiming to eradicate poverty, the program set 17 broader goals and 169 specific targets. The world is taking notice, and Philadelphia is taking up the challenge through the Philadelphia Sustainable Development Goals Campaign. A collaboration between Mural Arts Philadelphia and Global Philadelphia Association, the project aims to raise awareness and foster engagement with the 17 goals through the creation of murals, university-led research projects, and a series of private efforts. On October 3, 2019, the first mural concerning the Development Goals will be unveiled. Scheduled for 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., this event is sponsored by Glenmede, facilitated by Mural Arts Philadelphia, and hosted by the Friends Select School. Look for the Sustainable Development Goals icon to attend related events.

Philadelphia Medical Firsts Philadelphia is a city of firsts in so many ways, but especially in its Medical Heritage. From first operations to medical discoveries, our city has seen many new discoveries leading to the betterment of health and mankind. Additionally, one in every six doctors in the US are trained in Philadelphia. This year’s GlobalPhillyTM Expo will include a spotlight on Philadelphia’s Medical Heritage. But Kiarostami’s deliberate blend of fiction and reality delve into the deeper aspects of the human condition. His background as a painter, poet, and photographer provide a richly sensual foundation for his work and garnered him accolades as he rose to prominence in the early 1990s with films like Where is the Friend’s Home? and Taste of Cherry. Celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, it marks the midpoint of autumn according to the traditional Chinese calendar. There is a long-standing belief that the full moon is brighter on the evening of the Mid-Autumn Festival than at any other time of the year. Chinese families all over the world will gather together to view the moon and eat a reunion dinner which includes mooncakes, many being marked with a red dot to commemorate the start of the revolt against the Yuan dynasty in the 14th century.
