Intro to GlobalPhilly™ 2017 Welcome to GlobalPhilly17! The third iteration of our Global Expo is designed to show the international activity of our residents and the global reach of Philadelphia and the region. In these exceptional times for Philadelphia we are delighted to showcase the work of the members of the Global Philadelphia Association and the contribution they make to the city’s global fabric. The events contribute to an evolving story, that of an increasing presence on the world stage for Philadelphia. The GlobalPhilly™ 2017 Passport leads you to over 120 events* presented by the members of the Global Philadelphia Association. With something to suit all, the events are identified by 13 categories (details page 3). Inside you will also begin to learn a little about the progress that has occurred since Philadelphia was designated as America’s first World Heritage City. On page 10-11 you can find more information on this designation, the resources we currently have available for you and what you can expect to see from the project in the future. On September 7, 2017, in honor of Philadelphia, our Nation’s First World Heritage City. We celebrate in solidarity with 270 World Heritage Cities across the globe in support of the work being done to carry out Philadelphia’s World Heritage Strategic Plan. The highly acclaimed anchor of CNN’s Sunday morning show State of the Union and weekday show The Lead with Jake Tapper, will receive an award for Distinguished Global Journalism and keynote Philadelphia’s World Heritage City Celebration. Presenter: The Print Center Date: Sept 8 – Nov 18 Location: The Print Center 1614 Latimer Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103 Cost: Free Open to the public The forms explored in Puryear’s sculpture, often rooted in nature, are equally powerful in his prints, the creation of which has been sporadic. During these past two decades, his productivity in printmaking has been extensive, emphasizing the most tactile of the print processes: woodcut, a relief process, and the various etching (intaglio) techniques. Presenter: The Confucius Institute at Temple University Date: Sept 10-Oct 4 Location: Tyler School of Art lobby (2001 N 13th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19122) Cost: Free Open to the public Special Instructions: Register Online The Joys of Calligraphy is a Chinese Calligraphy art exhibit by artist, Yang Er, associate professor and graduate student advisor at the College of Fine Arts, Zhejiang Normal University. Professor Yang has been teaching calligraphy for 35 years. His works has been featured in the Chinese Calligraphy journal and he is among the Top One Hundred Calligraphers in the China Lanting Calligrapher’s Festival. He has held solo exhibitions in China and Hungary and published three manuscripts of his calligraphy work. Yang Er is also a member of the China Calligrapher’s Association and a member of the Academic Committee of the Provincial Calligrapher’s Association of Zhejiang. Presenter: Association for Public Art Date: Thursdays through Sundays Sept 14 – Oct 8 Location: Benjamin Franklin Parkway Cost: Free Open to the public In September 2017, the Association for Public Art (aPA) in Philadelphia presents a major new site-specific work by the internationally acclaimed artist Cai Guo-Qiang. Nine hundred illuminated lanterns in a bevy of colors and 7

shapes will float along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, held aloft by a fleet of 27 pedicabs. THE FUTURE OF WORK: AN EF GLOBAL CONFERENCE

Broad Street, Philadelphia Cost: Ticket prices available online Open to the Public Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts and librettist Mark Campbell, the team behind the acclaimed Silent Night, return to Opera Philadelphia for the world premiere of a chamber opera based on Peter Ackroyd’s “downright exhilarating” (LA Times) novel, The Trial of Elizabeth Cree. Elizabeth Cree is a work that combines the factual with the fictive and the historical with the imaginary. O17

This unprecedented civic experiment transforms Philadelphia into an urban stage, where diverse audiences gather to share an experience and amplify human connectedness. Philadelphia is a World Heritage City! On November 6, 2015, as the result of a multi-year joint venture between the Global Philadelphia Association and the City of Philadelphia, Philadelphia was accepted as a member of the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC) and became recognized as a “World Heritage City.� It is the first city in the United States of America to have attained this distinctive status, and now joins a prestigious company of over 280 international OWHC cities. THE WORLD HERITAGE CITY PROJECT Soon after achieving this status, the World Heritage City Project was established as a community-built vision of what we would like to accomplish as a World Heritage City. The Project has three fundamental goals: 1. To promote preservation and appreciation of our geographical, historical, and cultural heritage through the World Heritage City designation and continued education. 2. To provide a powerful economic and cultural stimulus to the region. 3. To inspire citizens and residents to feel pride in their World Heritage City. WORLD HERITAGE RESOURCES FOR YOU Philadelphia World Heritage City Film: This 28-minute documentary was written and narrated by University of Pennsylvania Professor of History of Art, David B. Brownlee, Ph.D., FSAH, and produced and directed by filmmaker Sam Katz. It is available in multiple languages, and can be viewed on the GPA website. World Heritage Education Program & Lesson Plans: There are many World Heritage resources available for educators. The World Heritage Tool Kit contains 35 model lesson plans for K-12 students and is available on the GPA website. GPA has also created a series of World Heritage programs for Philadelphia schools and is developing an Online Resource Center. Contact GPA for more information.

Philadelphia World Heritage Coloring Book: This innovative and engaging publication aimed at ages 5 to 11 features a diverse group of children visiting sites of historical and cultural importance throughout the city. Visit the GPA website for info on ordering your copies. Sponsors purchasing an order of 250 or more will have their logo prominently displayed on the back cover of each book in their order. OWHC Guidebook 2017: This “Community Involvement in Heritage Management” guidebook was created by the OWHC Regional Secretariat of Northwest Europe and North America as a useful resource for urban heritage site managers, responsible practitioners, and heritage researchers. It is available on the GPA website. World Heritage Status Economic Impact Report: Econsult Solutions produced a report on the potential benefits, both tangible and intangible, associated with OWHC status. These benefits relate to tourism, trade, international relations, and heritage management. It is available on the GPA website. Effects of World Heritage City Designation on Real Estate: This report reviews the literature on the impact of world heritage status on property values. The research suggests that many cities across the globe have experienced a positive “world heritage effect”, both directly and indirectly. It is available on the GPA website. The Philadelphia World Heritage City seal was designed for the World Heritage City Project by J2 Design Partnership in 2016. It has come to represent a city that is using a uniquely distinguished past to propel a dramatically new future. BEHIND THE DESIGN At the center of the logo is an outline of Independence Hall. This iconic building has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for having “outstanding universal value” in that it is “directly or tangibly associated with events or living traditions, with ideas, or with beliefs… of outstanding universal significance.” Having this UNESCO-designated site within our borders was integral in achieving Philadelphia’s World Heritage City status. To the right of the tower is a star, representing the City’s aspirations for the future. The horizontal lines to the left of the tower represent motion, reflecting that we are not standing on our laurels but moving forward as a city. DOWNLOAD AND USE THE SEAL! The seal is open-source and available to download on the GPA website (globalphiladelphia.org). It can be adapted for incorporation into your website, correspondence, brochures, annual reports, promotional materials, etc. The only exception is that use is not authorized in connection with merchandise. 12

Presenter: Opera Philadelphia Date: Sept 15-24 Location: The Academy of Music, Broad and Locust Streets, Philadelphia, PA 19102 Cost: Ticket prices available online Open to the Public In Mozart’s masterful comedy about love, truth, and the pursuit of enlightenment, prince Tamino sets off to rescue Pamina, the beautiful daughter of the Queen of the Night, from the mysterious Sarastro. Celebrated co-directors Suzanne Andrade and Barrie Kosky present The Magic Flute in a playfully subversive, crowd-pleasing production that evokes a meeting between 1920s silent movies and David Lynch, with the singers performing amidst fanciful animated projections. Created by the British theatre group 1927, the LA Times calls this Magic Flute “a stunning liveaction cartoon. It is fun for the whole family.” WAR STORIES

Presenter: Philadelphia Museum of Art and Opera Philadelphia Date: Sept 16-23 Location: Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA 19130 Cost: Ticket prices available online Open to the Public One of the city’s most iconic civic spaces, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, is the setting for this site-specific double-bill featuring Monteverdi’s Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda and I Have No Stories To Tell You, by composer Lembit Beecher and librettist Hannah Moscovitch. Monteverdi’s timely 1638 tale of the Christian soldier Tancredi who battles with a Muslim soldier, actually his lover Clorinda in disguise, is staged in the museum’s medieval stone cloister, with its carved limestone cornices and 12th century fountain. Date: Sept 16 Location: South St, between 15th and 16th Streets Cost: Free Open to the public In September 2003, Warren Oree and Graziella DiNuzzo of LifeLine Music Coalition used their own funds to create the first Philadelphia Jazz and Poetry Festival – a threeday event on the weekend of September 11th, which included over 14 venues (mostly FREE). With the desire to continue to promote and showcase Philly Jazz musicians and artists, Graziella and Warren gathered the support of the Philly business community for funding and support. WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED

Presenter: Opera Philadelphia Date: Sept 16 – 24 Location: The Wilma Theater, 265 S. Broad St, 19107 Cost: Ticket prices available online Open to the Public On the run after a series of tragic incidents, five North Philly teens find refuge in an abandoned, condemned house in West Philadelphia at the exact location that served as headquarters of the MOVE organization. This World Premiere chamber opera by Daniel Bernard Roumain, an acclaimed composer and performer whose work defies genre, and librettist Marc Bamuthi Joseph, an arts activist known for spoken word performance, is “ambitiously interdisciplinary,” according to Bill T. Presenter: Penn Museum and Global Philadelphia Association Date: Sept 16 • 8:45 am-12pm Location: Penn Museum, 3260 South St Cost: Free to Philadelphia Educators Open to the public (registration required) Special instructions: Register at global-philadelphia. ticketleap.com/teacher-workshop/ This interactive workshop will introduce educators to the Philadelphia World Heritage City Project, to the heritage education resources available at the Penn Museum and elsewhere right here in Philadelphia, and to the recent first international Philadelphia World Heritage Education trip. Participants will work in small groups to examine new global curricula across grade levels and disciplines, discover object-based learning techniques using Penn Museum galleries, and hear Philadelphia teachers discuss how they have implemented their visits to Indian and Nepalese World Heritage sites and cities into classroom action plans. Philadelphia, founded in 1682 by William Penn, was the first city in the world where religious liberty was established and practiced. The Library Company, founded in 1731, was the first subscription library in the world. The first private mental institution was established by Quakers in 1709. The first public institution for the care of the poor, sick and insane - the Philadelphia Almshouse, later in Philadelphia General Hospital – was founded in 1729. The Union Fire Company, established in 1736, was the first volunteer fire organization in the world. The first life insurance company, Presbyterian Ministers Fund, formed in 1717. First skiff steamboat operated on the Delaware by John Fitch in 1786. First auto, driven by steam, was invented by Oliver Evans in 1804. First electronic computer – ENIAC – was developed at the University of Pennsylvania in 1945.
