A lo largo de las siguientes páginas el lector podrá encontrar importantes datos y cifras del sector los cuales le permitirán hacer un recorrido a través de la historia de EXPOFLORES, conocer sus metas, objetivos, y entender el papel destacado que esta Asociación desempeña en la economía del país.

niciamos nuestra actividad en 1984, este 2019 cumplimos 35 años de fundación. Es importante destacar que Expoflores como asociación, se estableció sin obligación de afiliación, en la época que existía en la constitución la obligatoriedad de pertenecer a una Cámara. Esto nos motivó a convertirnos en una institución cada vez más exigente y eficiente en el cumplimiento de metas y expectativas de nuestros socios. En el año 2008 la nueva constitución eliminó este artículo impactando a la mayor parte de Cámaras, mientras tanto para nosotros esto fue un motivador, muchas empresas del sector floricultor se integraron a la Asociación, que en ese momento comenzaba a tener un significado con mayor sentido.

Diversos acontecimientos han marcado el camino de Expoflores, uno de los más trascendentales fue nuestra participación para la ampliación de la pista del nuevo aeropuerto de Quito. Nosotros planteamos e insistimos en la necesidad de contar con una pista de aterrizaje 500 metros más larga.

Como resultado, en el aeropuerto ahora se reciben aviones de carga 747- 800; siendo este el modelo más grande que ha aterrizado en la ciudad y sale completamente lleno. Si la ampliación no se hubiera dado, ese mismo avión tendría que despegar con el 80 o 70 por ciento de capacidad, con el agravante del incremento de costos.

Otro hito importante es la feria Expo Flor Ecuador 2018, que por primera vez organizamos como Asociación. Este evento constituye uno de los encuentros más importantes del sector y es una de las ferias más grandes a nivel internacional. Para muchos visitantes resultó ser la mejor feria que se ha realizado en la historia de flores en el mundo. Expo Flor Ecuador 2018 inauguró el Centro de Convenciones Metropolitano de Quito en el Parque Bicentenario. La Expo Flor Ecuador convoca a compradores de flores de todo el mundo, en esta ocasión contamos con visitantes de 42 nacionalidades, desde este espacio de exhibición ellos pueden conocer la variedad de flores que están en producción.

Adicionalmente, las fincas tienen la oportunidad de negociar con mercados internacionales a mediano y largo plazo. La presentación de la feria fue extraordinaria, esto se logró gracias al compromiso y colaboración de cada uno de los stands participantes. La convocatoria tuvo una participación sin precedentes. Normalmente, Ecuador o Colombia convocan a 700 – 800 compradores; en nuestro

caso tuvimos 1.600 visitantes, lo que impactó muy fuerte en el sector floricultor mundial porque tuvimos un alto número de importadores que probablemente jamás han visitado Ecuador.

Nuestro compromiso nos permitió alcanzar los objetivos y en muchos casos superar las expectativas de los participantes.

Como representantes del sector una de nuestras principales actividades es gestionar temas y proyectos relacionadas con política pública, impulsando el desarrollo del sector con propuestas que promuevan el crecimiento y bienestar de nuestros socios. En este sentido, trabajamos en dos niveles; a nivel gremial, es decir para todo el sector, en temas relacionados con cambios de ley, normativas, entre otros, y a nivel personal: apoyamos y acompañamos a cada finca socia en problemas que puedan presentarse con regulaciones, en el Municipio o en la localidad. La dinámica y el principio fundamental de nuestra operación está enfocada en tres ejes: servicio, investigación y desarrollo. Enfocados en este objetivo, en 2007 implementamos la Certificación Flor Ecuador (Flor Ecuador Certified® ) para optimizar estándares en procesos de calidad y eficiencia, sostenibilidad del negocio, mejoras en la ley laboral, temas de responsabilidad social y ambiental.

En 2016 incursionamos con fuerza en servicios integrales muy potentes como la herramienta tecnológica Big Data y tecnologías innovadoras que se están implementando en países industrializados. La herramienta Big Data ayuda a comparar el desempeño de los distintos campos de cultivos, muestra cifras de ventas y de producción por región y a nivel nacional, además sirve para abordar problemas comunes de la industria que afectan a todo el sector floricultor. La globalización y las condiciones del mercado actual nos obligan a estar siempre a la vanguardia y manejar de forma más eficiente la información que se genera a nivel mundial para tomar decisiones oportunas y solventes que nos den resultados a mediano y largo plazo.

Inversión, tecnología e investigación Nuestro sector es un cultivo que requiere de mucha inversión, producción, espacios muy específicos y tecnología de vanguardia qué en ciertos productos agrícolas, por costos, en la actualidad serían inaplicables. Sin embargo, se han realizado avances en varios campos. Por ejemplo, en 2014 desarrollamos un nuevo diseño de empaque para flor con el objetivo de mejorar la relación del peso de la caja con el peso volumen de esta. El proyecto continúa procesándose para que más fincas utilicen este tipo de empaque que optimiza la relación de peso en el avión en aproximadamente el 27%; adicionalmente, se reduce costos y daños a la flor. También, promovemos empaques de flores que puedan ser reciclados en un solo proceso o sean absolutamente biodegradables.

En investigación, trabajamos en la búsqueda de una tecnología que permita fumigar la flor con rayos beta previa a la exportación, sin usar agroquímicos o pesticidas que en muchos casos son nocivos para la flor y el medio ambiente. Esta investigación nos tomará al menos ocho años en desarrollar.

De igual manera, incursionamos en el mundo de la tecnología de radioactividad dirigida. Esta herramienta nos ayuda a manejar los procesos de forma mucho más dinámica. En este sentido, a través de la Escuela de Floricultura que es la entidad que más impulsa temas de vanguardia, lanzamos en 2014 Siflor, un Simposio técnico especializado para floricultores de Ecuador y Colombia. Las charlas que exponemos como Expoflores son en un 50% teoría no aplicada. En este contexto, en 2014 implementamos con la participación de 15 fincas la biosodorización, un procedimiento desarrollado por uno de nuestros expositores que consiste en usar algunos recursos de la misma tierra en ciertas prácticas para neutralizar el piso, evitando el uso de plaguicidas una vez realizada la siembra, es decir, eliminando bacterias que puedan dañar la planta. Este método es sumamente inocuo y efectivo.

Servicios innovadores que desarrollamos para impulsar el sector Flor Ecuador Certified®

Como Expoflores buscamos brindar a nuestros socios todas las facilidades para el cumplimiento de la normativa ecuatoriana tanto en temas ambientales, laborales y de sostenibilidad.

Las fincas certificadas en Flor Ecuador cumplen con todas las regulaciones; a través de este esquema garantizamos a las autoridades públicas, sociedad civil y a los diferentes actores involucrados que hemos verificado en una lista de chequeo el cumplimiento de al menos el 80% de los requisitos estipulados por la ley y otras especificaciones. Así consideramos que el sector pueda posicionarse en mercados internacionales. Cualquier finca, no necesariamente miembro de Expoflores puede certificarse.

Comprometidos con el fortalecimiento del sector firmamos un convenio con Agrocalidad para homologar nuestra certificación con las BPA (Buenas Prácticas Agropecuarias), requisito que exige esta entidad, toda finca certificada cumple automáticamente con este requerimiento. Por otro lado, desarrollamos una campaña muy fuerte durante este año con el objetivo de posicionar nuestra

Certificación en mercados internacionales, particularmente en la Unión Europea, con el fin de impulsar las relaciones comerciales a partir de la firma del Acuerdo Comercial. Asimismo, es importante recalcar la implementación del sistema que creamos para que las fincas puedan realizar auto-auditorias mensuales, este beneficio desarrollamos considerando que los organismos certificadores que están validando a las empresas agrícolas realizan una visita de certificación al año, a través de este nuevo sistema es posible tener un control de calidad los 12 meses del año.

Programas de Responsabilidad Social Empresarial En Expoflores contamos con 170 programas de responsabilidad social los cuales son manejados directamente por cada una de las fincas. En este tema brindamos a las fincas una exposición internacional, mostramos al mundo que la flor ecuatoriana se produce con los más altos estándares de calidad y normas de responsabilidad social. Nuestro objetivo es difundir los programas de responsabilidad social que manejan nuestras fincas certificadas y que el consumidor conozca que la flor que está comprando ha cumplido con procedimientos sostenibles los cuales garantizan el bienestar y procesos ambientales y sociales de los colaboradores de las fincas. Por ejemplo, la producción es auto-sostenible o los sistemas de riego utilizados son por goteo optimizando el uso del agua.

XPO TRACK Es un servicio que desarrollamos internamente con el fin de brindar a las fincas información oportuna para la toma de decisiones gerenciales. Este sistema interconectado les permite a nuestros socios conocer en tiempo real la información de sus cajas durante todo el proceso de exportación. Es decir, desde el momento que se despacha de la finca, pasa por las agencias de carga (quienes consolidan la carga de exportación), el ingreso a las paletizadoras, los intervalos de cada una de las agencias de control como narcóticos y Agrocalidad que son organismos de control del Estado, el ingreso a la aerolínea y su posterior despacho. Además, tendrán conocimiento total del estado de sus cajas y podrán acceder a información importante del sector como estadísticas de exportaciones. A las fincas que adquieren este sistema informático de última generación les entregamos un nombre de usuario, clave y contraseña para que puedan ingresar al sistema y verificar el proceso de forma directa. La información se maneja con absoluta confidencialidad y seguridad.

Escuela de Floricultura Es un ente privado que se maneja con Expoflores; a través de la Escuela de Floricultura impartimos tecnología, avances y charlas especializadas sobre todos los temas que podamos abordar. La Escuela inició en 2009 y hemos realizado cursos relacionados con diferentes áreas de recursos humanos, contabilidad, tecnología, dirección de empresas, marketing, ventas, manejo de suelos, invernaderos, entre otros. En estos 10 años hemos dirigido nuestras capacitaciones a diferentres audiencias, desde supervisores hasta gerentes generales y accionistas de empresas.

Nuestro objetivo es impulsar al desarrollo humano del sector floricultor con programas de capacitación específicos que promuevan competencias, habilidades y destrezas para su fortalecimiento.

Ferias Anualmente participamos en varias ferias alrededor del mundo como en China, Rusia, Colombia.

Queremos acompañarlos y llevar nuestra marca Flor Ecuador a nuevos destinos. Actualmente, estamos lanzando la segunda edición de nuestra feria Expo Flor Ecuador 2020, por ahora contamos con 129 expositores inscritos y sabemos que contaremos con su activa participación en este evento. ¡Próximamente les daremos a conocer la fecha!

e began our activities in 1984, in 2019 we celebrate our 35th anniversary of our foundation. It is important to highlight that Expoflores, as an association, was established without requirement of affiliating to a Chamber of business at a time when the constitution mandated this type of affiliation. This motivated us to become a more demanding, and efficient, institution that fulfilled the goals and expectations of our partners. In 2008 the new constitution eliminated this article, severely impacting most Chambers, however, this period was encouraging for us, as many companies of the flower market joined our Association, which began to grow in meaning.

Many events have marked the path of Expoflores, one of the most transcendental ones being our participation in achieving the expansion of runway for the new Quito airport. We proposed and insisted on the need to have a runway 500 meters longer than planned. As a result, the airport now accommodates 747-800 cargo planes, the 800 being the biggest to land in and take off from, at full capacity, Quito. If the expansion hadn’t occurred, that same plane would have to take of at 70-80% of capacity, and this would mean additional costs.

Another important accomplishment is the Expo Flor Ecuador 2018 fair, which we organized for the first time as an Association. This event is one of the most important for the flower business and is one of the biggest fairs in the world. According to some visitors, this was the best fair for flowers in the world ever.

The fair is a space where buyers can get to know the variety of flowers in production, additionally, the plantations have the opportunity to negotiate medium- and long-term deals with the international market.

The 2018 fair also inaugurated the Quito Metropolitan Convention Center in the Bicentenary Park.

The presentation of the fair was extraordinary, this was achieved thanks to the commitment and collaboration of each of the participating stands. The Expo Flor Ecuador brings together flower buyers from around the world, in this specific year we had visitors from 42 different nationalities. The attendance was also unprecedented. Normally, Ecuador or Colombia summon 700-800 buyers, in our case we had

in attendance 1600 visitors which impacted the world flower market, we had a high number of importers that had probably never visited Ecuador before.

Our commitment has allowed us to meet the goals and, in many cases, go beyond the expectations of the attendants.

As spokespersons of the sector, one of our main activities is the management of issues and projects related to public policy, boosting the development of the sector with proposals that promote growth and wellbeing of our partners. In this aspect we work in two levels: one as an association, benefitting the entire sector in matters related to law reforms, norms, and others; and in a second level, in specific assistance: we support and accompany associated plantations in issues that may arise related to regulations, with the local council, or the government. The process, and the guiding principles of our operations are focused on three axis: service, research and development. In 20017 we implemented the certification “Flor Ecuador Certified®” to optimize standards in quality, efficiency, sustainability, labor law improvements, social and environmental responsibility.

In 2016 we entered the area of comprehensive services with powerful tools such as Big Data, and other innovative technologies that are being implemented in industrialized nations. Big Data helps compare the performance of different fields of crops, display data of sales and production by region and country, and it also helps address common issues of the industry that affect the whole flower sector. Globalization and the current market conditions demand that we are always at the vanguard, and that we manage, in the most efficient way possible, the information that is generated at a global level, to take timely and reliable decisions that yield results in the medium- and long-term.

Investment, technology and research Our crop relies heavily on investment, production, very specific spaces, and cutting-edge technology, which, are impossible for other agricultural products due to the cost of these necessities. Through the years there have been developments in various fields. For example, in 2014 we developed a new packaging design for flowers that improved the ratio of crate weight vs product volume. The project is on-going, it’s aim is for more plantations to use this packaging that optimizes the weight ratio in planes by approximately a 27%, additionally, it reduces damage to flowers and cost. We also promote the use of flower packaging that can be easily recycled in a single process or be completely biodegradable.

In terms of research, we work in developing technology that allows us to eliminate pests with beta rays before exportation, avoiding agrochemicals or pesticides that are damaging to flowers and the environment. This research will take at least eight years.

Likewise, we have made a foray into the field of directed radioactivity. This tool allows us to manage processes in a more dynamic fashion. Through the “Escuela de Floricultura”, the entity that does the most to promote leading edge technologies, we launched in 2014 “Siflor”, a specialized technological symposium aimed at floriculturists from Ecuador and Colombia. The lectures presented as Expoflores contain about 50% of non-applied theory. In 2014 we implemented, with the participation of 15 plantations, “biosodorización”, a procedure developed by one of our lecturers that consists of using some of the elements of soil in certain processes to neutralize the soil, eliminating bacteria that could harm the plant, and avoiding the use of pesticides after sowing has taken place. This method is highly harmless and effective.

Groundbreaking services we’ve developed to propel the Flor Ecuador Certified® sector.

We look for ways to provide our partners all the necessaries to meet Ecuadorian standards in the environmental, labor, and sustainability areas.

The certified plantations meet all regulations; though this we guarantee to the state and private entities, as well as different stakeholders, that we have verified through a checklist at least 80% of state and private requirements. Through this we al so believe that our industry can gain a foothold in international markets. Any plantation, regardless of membership to Expoflores can obtain certification.

Due to our commitment with strengthening the area, we signed an agreement with Agrocalidad (a state entity that oversees phyto- and zoosanitary concerns) to make our certification equivalent with GPA (Good Agricultural Practices), which is a requirement of this entity. Now, all Flor Ecuador Certified® plantations automatically meet this requirement. We have also developed a strong campaign this year to have our certification recognized in international markets, in particular by the European Union. Our aim is to promote commercial relations based on a Trade Agreement. Additionally, we highlight the implementation of a system of monthly self-auditing for plantations. This was developed in light of certifying organizations only doing yearly examinations, through this system we can control quality year-round.

Corporate Social Responsibility Programs In Expoflores we count with 170 social responsibility programs that are managed directly by each plantation. In this are we offer plantations an international presentation, showing the world that Ecuadorian flowers are produced with the highest standards of quality and social responsibility norms.

Our purpose is to broadcast these social responsibility programs managed by our certified plantations, and to let consumers know that the flowers they are buying meet sustainable procedures that guarantee the environmental and social wellbeing of the plantation partners. For example, if production is selfsustainable, or if the irrigation systems are drop irrigation, optimizing the use of water.

XPO TRACK It is a service that we developed internally, aimed at providing plantations with timely information for managerial decisions. This interconnected system allows our partners to know, in real time, the status of their crates during the entire exportation process. From the moment it has left the plantation, it’s transit through cargo agencies, palletizing, anti-narcotic agencies, Agrocalidad (these are both state agencies), arrival at the airline, and finally it’s transportation. Additionally, plantations will have information relevant to the state of their cargo, and relevant business information such as exportation statistics. The plantations that acquire this latest-generation information system are given a username and password to access the system and verify information in a direct manner. Information is kept both safe and confidential.

Escuela de Floricultura A private entity that is managed by Expoflores. Through this school we give classes on technology, advances and specialized lectures, about everything we can encompass. The school began in 2009 and we have completed courses on different areas, human resources, accounting, technology, management, marketing, sales, soil management, greenhouses, among others. In these ten years we have aimed our workshops to different audiences, from supervisors, managers, and stock holders.

Our purpose is to drive human capital development in the Flower sector, with specific workshops that promote proficiency, skills and abilities.

Fairs Yearly we participate in diverse fairs around the world, in China, Russia, Colombia. Our intention is to accompany partners and to bring our brand “Flor Ecuador” to new destinations. Currently we are launching the second edition of our fair: Expo Flor Ecuador 2020. So far we have 129 exponents registered and trust fully in their active participation for this event.
