Naguib Sawiris

In-depth conversation with

Naguib Sawiris is a rare example of a true global citizen. Starting his career in Egypt, he has expanded his reach and influence far beyond his homeland, making a significant impact on industries from telecommunications to real estate and resource capital across continents. In this exclusive sitdown, Sawiris reflects on his journey, sharing insights into the principles and passions that drive his everexpanding legacy.

Naguib, you’ve worn many hats throughout your career—from telecommunications to real estate to resource capital investments. What keeps you inspired across such diverse fields?

I’ve always been motivated by the challenge of creating something transformative. Whether it’s building telecom networks in underserved regions or setting new standards in high-end real estate, I find excitement in growth and impact.

I always look for opportunities to make a difference—whether in business or for the community. Of course, it made a lot of wealth for my family too. I don’t want to sound too idealistic.

Looking back at the journey with Orascom, what do you consider your biggest accomplishment in telecommunications?

Starting and growing Orascom Telecom Holding (OTH) was a proud milestone. We took on the ambitious goal of building a telecommunications company that could serve millions across Africa and the Middle East, and OTH eventually operated networks in over 28 countries.

The merger of Wind Telecom, OTH’s mother company, with VEON (formerly VimpelCom) in 2011 was another key moment. It created the world’s sixth-largest telecom provider by subscribers, and it was the largest ever LBO deal in Europe at the time.- —proof that we were moving in the right direction.

Orascom has expanded significantly since you joined in 1979. How have you seen the company evolve?

Orascom has evolved from a national entity into an international conglomerate with ventures in sectors as varied as construction, telecom, and mining.

Over the years, we’ve pursued growth opportunities that align with community impact and long-term value. Now, as Executive Chairman of Orascom Investment Holding, I see us focusing on sectors with high growth potential in Egypt and Africa, areas where transformation and development are needed.

Your work with La Mancha Holding stands out, especially in the resource capital and energy transition metals sectors. Why the focus on these areas?

La Mancha’s primary objective is to offer professional investors exposure to high-quality mining assets with untapped potential in the precious and energy transition metals sectors.

The group has played a key role in the transformation of multiple junior mining companies into sizable players that have generated superior capital returns to investors and have adhered to rigorous sustainability standards. At La Mancha, we’re committed to responsible mining that benefits local communities.

Real estate has become another focus for you with Ora Developers. What inspired you to enter this industry?

Ora Developers emerged from a vision to build communities that stand out in design, quality, and lifestyle. I saw the demand for highend real estate in emerging markets, not just in Egypt, but globally, from Cyprus to Grenada. With Ora, we’re creating projects that redefine luxury and provide unmatched experiences for residents, with a special emphasis on hospitality.

You’re also involved in philanthropic activities through the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development. Could you tell us more about that?

Philanthropy is a core part of our family values. The Sawiris Foundation aims to address critical social issues in Egypt, from education and health to job creation and entrepreneurship. I firmly believe in giving back to our community, and we work to create sustainable programs that empower individuals and families.

You have received numerous international awards, including the French Legion d’Honneur and Italy’s Star of Italian Solidarity. How do these recognitions influence you?

Awards and honors are humbling, and they remind me of the global impact of our work. These recognitions highlight the positive contributions we’ve made, but they also serve as a reminder to keep striving for more meaningful impact.

You’ve held several influential advisory positions, from NYU’s Global Institute for Advanced Study to the London Stock Exchange’s Africa Advisory Group. What is your approach to these advisory roles?

In advisory roles, I focus on bringing regional insights and pushing for innovation. Whether it’s advising on Africa’s potential or sharing knowledge at NYU, I aim to help these institutions shape decisions that impact global markets and emerging economies.

You’ve built businesses and made investments globally, often in challenging markets. How do you approach risk?

Risk is inherent to any new endeavor, especially in emerging markets. I often made the biggest successes because I took the biggest risks. My approach is to understand each market deeply, engage with local stakeholders, and have a long-term perspective. It’s essential to have a sound strategy, but I also trust my instincts. Sometimes, it’s about taking a calculated leap of faith.

Finally, what’s your vision for the future—both for Orascom and for you personally?

My vision is for Orascom to continue as a transformative force, especially in high-impact sectors in Africa and the Middle East. Personally, I want to keep pushing boundaries, whether in business or philanthropy, and leave a legacy of growth, opportunity, and positive change. As our conversation draws to a close, it’s clear that Naguib Sawiris embodies the spirit of global citizenship—rooted in his Egyptian heritage yet reaching far and wide to foster opportunity and transformation. His journey exemplifies the powerful role that a single individual can play on the world stage, leaving a lasting legacy across diverse fields and regions. With his unwavering vision, Sawiris continues to redefine what it means to make an impact.

MARC BENIOFF: REIMAGINING LEADERSHIP IN A WORLD THAT DEMANDS MORE

Marc Benioff isn’t just building a tech empire—he’s redefining what it means to lead with purpose.

In the world of tech titans, Marc Benioff stands out—not for his wealth or accolades, but for the unique way he wields both. The co-founder, chair, and CEO of Salesforce, Benioff has created a company that not only shapes the technological landscape but also holds a mirror to what business can be when infused with humanity. For Benioff, profit isn’t enough; true success comes from making a measurable impact on the world. It’s a philosophy that has guided him since Salesforce’s inception in 1999. Today, the company is worth over $200 billion, making it a giant in the world of cloud computing. But as Benioff often says, “The business of business is improving the state of the world.” It’s a mantra that doesn’t just grace his keynote speeches—it’s the ethos that drives everything he does.

A Prodigy in the Making

Marc Benioff’s entrepreneurial spirit emerged early. Born in 1964 and raised in San Francisco, he wrote his first software programme at just 15 years old—a game for the Atari console that earned him $1,500. By the time he graduated from the University of Southern California in 1986, his sights were set on the burgeoning tech industry.

Benioff joined Oracle, where he quickly made his mark as a dynamic and innovative thinker. By 26, he was the company’s youngest-ever vice president. Yet even as he climbed the corporate ladder, Benioff felt the pull of something greater. A sabbatical to India in the late 1990s would become a turning point.

Immersing himself in the spiritual teachings of ashrams and witnessing the power of community-driven change, Benioff returned with a bold vision: to build a company that married cutting-edge technology with a commitment to social responsibility.

The Salesforce Revolution

Salesforce began as a modest idea in a one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco. Benioff envisioned a software company that operated entirely in the cloud—a concept that was revolutionary at the time. But beyond the technology, Benioff wanted Salesforce to stand for something bigger.

From the outset, he established the “1-1-1” model: 1% of Salesforce’s equity, 1% of its products, and 1% of employee time would be dedicated to philanthropic causes. The idea was radical—especially in an industry notorious for cutthroat competition—but it proved to be a game-changer.

Over two decades later, the 1-1-1 model has inspired more than 17,000 companies to adopt similar frameworks, creating a ripple effect of corporate giving.

Today, Salesforce is a leader not just in customer relationship management software but also in corporate activism. Its San Francisco headquarters, a gleaming tower that dominates the city’s skyline, is a symbol of Benioff’s dual commitment to innovation and community. Inside, employees can meditate in mindfulness rooms or attend workshops on everything from sustainability to equality.

Activism in Action

Marc Benioff’s leadership extends far beyond the boardroom. In 2015, he made headlines when Salesforce took a stand against Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which critics argued discriminated against LGBTQ+ communities. Benioff threatened to pull Salesforce’s operations from the state, a move that pressured lawmakers to amend the legislation. “We’re not just an app company,” Benioff stated at the time. “We are a company with a heart.” His commitment to equality isn’t just external—it’s deeply personal. After a routine audit revealed a gender pay gap within Salesforce, Benioff was shocked. “I couldn’t believe it,” he later said in interviews. “I thought, ‘Not in my company.’” Rather than shy away from the issue, Benioff invested $6 million to close the gap, committing to regular audits to ensure equity. “If you’re not fixing pay inequality, you’re part of the problem,” he declared.

A Hawaiian Connection

For Benioff, Hawaii is more than a vacation spot—it’s a spiritual sanctuary. His deep connection to the islands is reflected in his philanthropy. In 2024, he pledged $150 million to improve healthcare across Hawaii, funding everything from advanced medical equipment to new wellness facilities. It’s one of the largest donations in the state’s history and underscores Benioff’s belief in tackling systemic inequalities head-on.

But his connection to Hawaii isn’t just about charity; it’s about personal renewal. Benioff has often credited the islands with teaching him the value of balance. “Hawaii saved me,” he said in a 2023 interview. “It taught me to slow down, to be present.”

The Human Side of Tech

While Salesforce is at the forefront of technological innovation, Benioff is acutely aware of the ethical challenges that come with it. Artificial intelligence, in particular, has become a focal point of his advocacy. “AI has the power to change everything,” he said during a keynote speech in 2024. “But it’s up to us to ensure it’s used responsibly.” Under Benioff’s guidance, Salesforce has introduced AI-driven tools designed to enhance productivity while prioritising transparency and fairness. Yet, he’s quick to emphasise that technology is only as good as the intentions behind it. “Innovation without integrity is meaningless,” he often says.

A Legacy of Impact

As Marc Benioff looks to the future, his focus remains unwavering: creating a world where business is a force for good. He’s published two books, Trailblazer and Behind the Cloud, both of which offer a glimpse into his philosophy and vision. But his true legacy lies in the lives he’s touched— whether through Salesforce’s innovations, his advocacy for equality, or his philanthropic contributions. In a 2024 interview, Benioff reflected on his journey: “The greatest wealth you can accumulate isn’t measured in dollars—it’s measured in the impact you have on the world.” For a man who has reshaped the way we think about leadership, those words ring truer than ever.

FEIKE SIJBESMA: A LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP AND PURPOSE

How a Dutch chemist turned a coal-mining company into a global beacon of sustainability and nutrition.

In a world where corporate leaders are often measured by profits and shareholder value, Feike Sijbesma offers a striking counter-narrative. As the former CEO of Royal DSM, a multinational corporation with roots in Dutch coal mining, Sijbesma transformed the company into a leader in nutrition, health, and sustainable living. Under his guidance, DSM not only redefined itself but also set a new standard for corporate responsibility. “Business is not about making money,” he has said. “It’s about creating value for society.”

This belief didn’t just shape DSM’s operations—it became a philosophy that continues to influence global conversations about the role of business in solving humanity’s greatest challenges. Today, Sijbesma is celebrated not just as a visionary executive but as a changemaker whose work bridges science, sustainability, and social impact.

Early Days: Science Meets Leadership

Born in the Netherlands in 1959, Feike Sijbesma was drawn to science from a young age. He pursued medical biology and biochemistry, earning degrees that would later inform his approach to innovation. His early career at Gist-Brocades, a fermentation company, allowed him to explore the intersection of biology and industry.

When DSM acquired Gist-Brocades in the late 1980s, Sijbesma found himself at the heart of a company grappling with change. DSM was then a century-old chemical powerhouse rooted in coal mining. Yet, the winds of sustainability and globalisation were beginning to shift, and Sijbesma would soon become the leader who would steer the company into a new era.

Revolutionising

DSM

When Sijbesma became DSM’s CEO in 2007, he inherited a company that was already pivoting toward speciality chemicals. But for Sijbesma, this was only the beginning. Recognising the growing need for sustainable and socially responsible business practices, he embarked on a mission to redefine DSM’s identity.

The company began focusing on nutrition, health, and materials that could drive global sustainability. One of Sijbesma’s most notable achievements was DSM’s entry into the nutrition sector, developing solutions to combat malnutrition.

“We had the science, and we had the scale,” he explained in an interview. “It was our responsibility to use them for good.” Products like fortified rice and nutrient-dense powders, created in partnership with organisations like the World Food Programme, became lifelines for millions of people in developing countries. These innovations addressed “hidden hunger”—the lack of essential vitamins and minerals that can lead to severe health problems, even in caloriesufficient diets.

A Commitment to Sustainability

Sijbesma’s leadership also marked DSM’s transformation into a sustainability leader. Under his tenure, the company became one of the first to set ambitious targets for carbon neutrality and invest heavily in renewable energy.

Projects included bio-based alternatives to fossil fuels and materials designed to reduce the environmental footprint of industries ranging from automotive to construction.

For Sijbesma, sustainability was never an afterthought—it was central to his vision of what modern business should be. “The climate crisis is not just an environmental issue,” he often said. “It’s a humanitarian issue. And businesses have a critical role to play.”

The Scaling Up Nutrition Movement

Beyond DSM, Sijbesma’s influence extended to global initiatives aimed at tackling malnutrition. In 2010, he became an active participant in the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement, a global coalition of governments, NGOs, and businesses dedicated to improving nutrition in the world’s most vulnerable communities.

His work with SUN exemplifies his ability to bridge sectors, bringing together the resources of the private sector with the mission-driven focus of public organisations. “Malnutrition is one of the world’s silent killers,” he remarked in a 2019 address. “But it’s a problem we can solve if we work together.”

Recognition and Legacy

Under Sijbesma’s leadership, DSM achieved financial success alongside its social impact, consistently ranking among the world’s most sustainable companies. These accomplishments earned Sijbesma widespread recognition. Harvard Business Review named him one of the world’s top-performing CEOs, and he received numerous awards for his contributions to sustainability and public health.

But Sijbesma remains characteristically humble. “It’s not about me,” he once said. “It’s about what we can achieve when we work collectively. The real success is in the lives we’ve changed.”

Life After DSM

In 2020, Sijbesma stepped down as DSM’s CEO, but his work was far from over. He became a climate envoy for the Netherlands, advising on policies to accelerate the country’s transition to renewable energy. He also joined advisory boards for international organisations tackling issues from global food security to sustainable finance.

Sijbesma’s ability to seamlessly move between corporate boardrooms, government summits, and humanitarian projects speaks to his rare combination of expertise and empathy. Whether addressing malnutrition or advocating for climate action, his focus remains unwavering: solving the systemic challenges that threaten human wellbeing.

The Human Side of Leadership

Despite his global influence, Sijbesma has always maintained a personal, down-to-earth approach to leadership. Colleagues describe him as thoughtful and collaborative, with an ability to inspire others to see the bigger picture. “Feike doesn’t just talk about purpose,” said a former DSM executive. “He lives it.” This ethos is perhaps best captured in Sijbesma’s own words: “The true measure of a company—or a person—is the positive impact they have on others.”

Looking Ahead

Today, Feike Sijbesma’s legacy continues to grow. His work serves as a powerful reminder that business can—and should—be a force for good. In an era of unprecedented challenges, his story is a testament to the transformative power of vision, purpose, and unwavering commitment.

LAURENT LECAMP: SHAPING

MONTBLANC’S FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE LUXURY

How Montblanc’s 2024 watch collection is redefining luxury with a commitment to sustainability and forward-thinking technology.

Montblanc has long been revered for its craftsmanship, elegance, and meticulous attention to detail in the world of fine watchmaking.

As luxury brands across the globe shift towards a more sustainable future, Montblanc is at the forefront of this movement, with its 2024 watch collection reflecting not only the brand’s heritage but also its dedication to innovation and sustainability. At the helm of this transformation is Laurent Lecamp, Managing Director of Montblanc’s watch division, who is guiding the brand towards a future where luxury and environmental responsibility coexist seamlessly.

A New Era for Montblanc: Innovation and Sustainability

For Lecamp, Montblanc’s watch division is about more than just creating timeless pieces. It’s about setting new standards for what luxury can and should be. As sustainability takes centre stage in the luxury market, Montblanc’s 2024 watch collection is built around this ethos. The company has implemented environmentally conscious practices at every stage of the production process, from sourcing materials to energy-efficient manufacturing techniques.

“Our goal is to offer more than just beautifully crafted watches,” Lecamp said in a 2023 interview with WatchPro. “We want our customers to know that they are buying into a brand that is committed to sustainable luxury. This means paying attention to how we source our materials, how we manufacture, and how we reduce our environmental footprint.” Montblanc’s dedication to sustainability is evident in the choice of recycled metals, ecofriendly packaging, and energy-efficient processes used throughout the creation of the 2024 collection.

The collection itself draws from Montblanc’s heritage while incorporating modern elements that appeal to the contemporary luxury consumer. The use of ethically sourced materials and innovative production techniques not only enhances the watches’ environmental credentials but also upholds the brand’s reputation for quality and precision.

Smartwatches: Where Tradition Meets Technology

Montblanc’s innovative spirit extends beyond traditional timepieces to its growing range of smartwatches. The brand’s Summit series, which merges fine craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology, continues to evolve in 2024, offering consumers a smartwatch that doesn’t compromise on luxury. “The Summit smartwatch is a reflection of our desire to stay ahead of the curve, while still maintaining the values that define Montblanc,” Lecamp said in a recent panel discussion at the Geneva Watch Days. “We’re blending the best of both worlds—classic Swiss watchmaking and modern technology.”

The latest iteration of the Summit collection incorporates a variety of new features designed for the modern user, including enhanced fitness tracking, a longer battery life, and improved connectivity. Despite these technological advancements, Montblanc ensures that each smartwatch remains true to the brand’s heritage, with materials like fine leather and steel complementing the sleek digital interface. One of the standout features of the Summit 3, Montblanc’s newest model, is its environmental focus. The smartwatch is made from recycled steel and features a strap crafted from sustainable materials.

This blend of innovation and eco-consciousness showcases Montblanc’s commitment to not only staying ahead in the world of smartwatches but also leading the way in sustainable luxury.

Montblanc’s 2024

Collection: A Symphony of Craftsmanship

While Montblanc is pushing boundaries in technology, its 2024 traditional watch collection remains a testament to the brand’s heritage of fine craftsmanship. One of the highlights of the collection is the 1858 Geosphere, a model that pays tribute to Montblanc’s long history of exploration and adventure. With its dual-time-zone display and striking design, the Geosphere is a standout piece for those who appreciate both functionality and elegance. Another key release in the collection is the Star Legacy Chronograph. Inspired by Montblanc’s rich watchmaking history, the Star Legacy continues to evolve, with this year’s model featuring an updated movement and an even more refined aesthetic. The watch’s intricate detailing and precision craftsmanship make it a fitting symbol of Montblanc’s commitment to excellence. Montblanc’s dedication to detail goes beyond the watches themselves. The packaging of the 2024 collection is fully recyclable and sourced from sustainable materials, part of the brand’s ongoing efforts to reduce waste and minimise its carbon footprint. This commitment to sustainability extends across the entire production process, reflecting a broader shift within the luxury sector towards eco-friendly practices.

A Vision for the Future

Under Lecamp’s leadership, Montblanc’s watch division has embraced the challenge of blending heritage and modernity. The 2024 collection is a reflection of this vision, showcasing how tradition and innovation can coexist in harmony. “We see ourselves as both custodians of Montblanc’s legacy and as innovators looking to the future,” Lecamp remarked in his address at the 2023 Watches and Wonders fair. This balance between preserving the past and embracing the future is what sets Montblanc apart in a rapidly changing luxury landscape. As consumers increasingly seek out brands that align with their values, Montblanc’s focus on sustainability, innovation, and craftsmanship positions it as a leader in the luxury watch industry. The 2024 collection is not just a celebration of fine watchmaking—it’s a statement about the future of luxury. Through Lecamp’s leadership, Montblanc is showing that luxury and responsibility are not mutually exclusive. The brand’s commitment to sustainability, coupled with its innovative spirit, ensures that Montblanc will continue to set the standard for what it means to create truly exceptional timepieces in the 21st century.

The Path Forward

Laurent Lecamp’s work at Montblanc demonstrates how a storied luxury brand can evolve to meet the demands of the modern world without compromising its identity. The 2024 watch collection is a testament to the company’s ability to innovate, blending the best of tradition and technology, while leading the charge towards sustainable luxury.

As the world of fine watchmaking continues to change, Montblanc’s vision for the future—under Lecamp’s guidance—remains focused on crafting timepieces that are not only beautiful and precise but also responsible. In a market where consumers are increasingly seeking meaning in the products they buy, Montblanc is proving that sustainability, innovation, and luxury can coexist in perfect harmony.

PRIYANKA CHOPRA JONAS: A GLOBAL FORCE FOR CHANGE

Priyanka Chopra Jonas has redefined what it means to be a global citizen, using her platform to champion representation, equality, and education.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas is no stranger to reinvention. From winning Miss World in 2000 to becoming one of Bollywood’s most celebrated stars, then breaking into Hollywood and evolving into a global advocate, Chopra Jonas has consistently pushed boundaries—both for herself and for those she represents. Today, she is more than an actress or a producer; she is a cultural icon, an activist, and a voice for the voiceless.

“I’ve always believed in breaking the mould,” she shared in her memoir, Unfinished. “The idea that there’s only one path to success has never sat well with me.” Chopra Jonas’s career and activism prove there is no single script to follow—and she’s writing a compelling narrative of her own.

Humble Beginnings and a Life in Motion

Born in Jamshedpur, India, in 1982, Chopra Jonas had a transient childhood, moving frequently due to her parents’ careers as doctors in the Indian Army. The constant relocations exposed her to diverse cultures and people, shaping her adaptable nature and curiosity about the world.

Her rise to fame began when she won Miss World at just 18 years old, a victory that catapulted her into the spotlight and opened the door to Bollywood. Over the next decade, Chopra Jonas dominated Indian cinema, starring in over 50 films and earning a reputation as one of the industry’s most versatile and bankable stars.

But even at the height of her Bollywood career, Chopra Jonas was looking westward. “I never want to feel comfortable,” she said in a 2017 interview. “Growth only happens outside your comfort zone.”

Breaking Barriers in Hollywood

Chopra Jonas’s Hollywood debut came with Quantico in 2015, where she made history as the first South Asian actor to lead an American network drama. The show’s success cemented her place in the global entertainment industry, paving the way for roles in blockbuster films like Baywatch and The Matrix Resurrections.

Yet her impact in Hollywood went beyond acting. As a producer, Chopra Jonas actively worked to amplify South Asian stories through her production company, Purple Pebble Pictures. “Representation matters,” she often says. “When I first came to Hollywood, there weren’t many roles for people who looked like me. I decided to change that.”

Becoming a Global Advocate

Chopra Jonas’s influence extends far beyond the entertainment industry. As a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2010, she has travelled to some of the world’s most vulnerable communities, advocating for children’s rights and education. “Education is the foundation for everything,” she said during a keynote address at the United Nations in 2024. “It’s the most powerful tool we have to break cycles of poverty and inequality.” Her foundation, the Priyanka Chopra Foundation for Health and Education, focuses on providing scholarships and healthcare to underprivileged children, especially young girls in India. To date, the foundation has supported over 70 girls, giving them the resources they need to pursue their dreams.

In 2024, she launched a new initiative with UNICEF to improve access to education for refugee children, a cause she feels deeply connected to. “Refugee children have the odds stacked against them, but education can give them a chance at a better future,” she said in a recent interview.

A Modern Marriage

Chopra Jonas’s marriage to musician Nick Jonas has only elevated her global profile. Their relationship—often described as a modern-day fairy tale—has played out on the world stage, but behind the glamour lies a partnership rooted in mutual respect and support. “We’re both fiercely ambitious,” she shared in a candid moment. “But we also balance each other. He inspires me to keep dreaming bigger.”

Together, the couple has used their influence to support charitable causes, including the Jonas Brothers’ Change for the Children Foundation and Chopra Jonas’s ongoing philanthropic work. Their shared commitment to making a difference is as central to their relationship as their individual careers.

Entrepreneurial Ventures

In addition to acting and advocacy, Chopra Jonas has established herself as a successful entrepreneur. UNLOCKING THE MIND: HOW MARISA PEER’S RTT IS TRANSFORMING LIVES

Discover the groundbreaking therapy reshaping success, fulfilment, and happiness.

Success, wealth, recognition—these are the hallmarks of achievement. But for many, they come at a cost. Beneath the surface, even the most accomplished individuals can feel burdened by insecurities, imposter syndrome, and a nagging sense of not being enough. Enter Marisa Peer, a world-renowned therapist whose innovative approach to mental wellness is rewriting the rulebook on what it means to live a truly fulfilled life. Through her pioneering method, Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT), Marisa is helping people across the globe not only achieve their goals but, more importantly, find lasting inner peace and self-worth.

Revolutionising Therapy with RTT

The inception of RTT came from Marisa’s deep desire to help others break free from the emotional chains that often bind them, no matter their external success. “It all started when I worked as a personal trainer at Jane Fonda’s studio in Los Angeles,” Marisa recalls. “I was surrounded by incredibly successful women—women who seemed to have everything—yet they were crippled by low self-esteem, eating disorders, and imposter syndrome.” This observation sparked Marisa’s journey toward creating a more impactful, results-driven form of therapy, one that could help clients transform their lives at a much faster pace than traditional methods. Inspired by her father, who was a headteacher deeply passionate about nurturing children’s self-esteem, Marisa knew that her path would be one of healing. “I saw how fulfilled he was in his work and how many lives he touched. I knew I wanted to help people the same way he did, by guiding them to realise their potential and break through the limitations that held them back.”

Drawing from her experience and an array of therapeutic techniques, Marisa developed RTT—a powerful fusion of hypnotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), neuroplasticity, and psychotherapy. RTT focuses on uncovering and reframing the limiting beliefs that take root in childhood or traumatic moments in life, and rewiring the brain for success. “RTT works by getting to the root of the issue,” Marisa explains. “It’s about uncovering the moments that shaped these negative beliefs and reframing them in a way that empowers the individual.”

The True Freedom of Inner Transformation

In a world where outward success is often equated with happiness, many individuals discover that material achievements alone are not enough. “The most common struggle I see, even among the most accomplished individuals, is the belief that they are not enough,” Marisa shares. “No matter what level of success they reach, there’s often a deep-seated feeling that it’s never enough, that they’re never enough.”

This is where RTT becomes transformative. Rather than focusing on surface-level problems, RTT goes deeper to address the root causes of these emotional blocks. By rewiring how clients perceive themselves, Marisa helps them break free from the mental narratives that have kept them stuck in cycles of self-doubt and fear.

Marisa recalls one particularly powerful transformation: “I worked with a woman who had been suffering from debilitating anxiety for over a decade. She had tried every form of therapy out there, but nothing seemed to create lasting change. Through RTT, we uncovered a childhood memory where she had internalised the belief that she wasn’t safe. Once we reframed that belief in just one session, her anxiety levels dropped dramatically. She went on to start her own business and live without the constant fear that had once controlled her.”

Such stories are common in Marisa’s work, and it’s this rapid, life-changing impact that has drawn clients from all walks of life, from high achievers in business to celebrities, athletes, and royalty. “RTT helps clients understand that their success isn’t a fluke, that they do deserve it, and more importantly, that their happiness doesn’t need to come from external validation. It’s about finding peace within,” Marisa notes.

Redefining Success: The “I Am Enough” Movement

One of Starck’s core beliefs is that design must serve a purpose beyond the purely aesthetic. It should solve problems, improve lives, and in today’s context, help mitigate the damage we’ve inflicted on the planet. This philosophy runs through everything he touches.

His work in sustainable design is about more than meeting the demands of environmentally conscious consumers—it’s a personal commitment to use his creativity to inspire positive change. Whether designing furniture from recycled materials or creating a selfsustaining villa, Starck’s designs ask us to reconsider our relationship with the world around us.

For Starck, innovation is not just about what’s new, but about what’s better—better for individuals, for society, and for the environment. In a time when the stakes for the planet’s future couldn’t be higher, he is showing how the design world can be a powerful force for change.

The Way Forward

At the heart of Marisa’s philosophy is the simple yet profound belief: “I Am Enough.” This mantra has not only become central to her work but has blossomed into a global movement embraced by people from all walks of life. “I realised early on that one of the most common beliefs my clients held was that they weren’t enough—whether it was in their relationships, careers, or personal achievements. This belief acted as an inner critic, constantly sabotaging their happiness and selfworth,” Marisa explains.

The “I Am Enough” philosophy is now embraced around the world, with individuals marking their mirrors with the words and using them as a daily reminder of their inherent value. “When we believe we are enough, we stop needing more—more praise, more validation, more material possessions to fill the emotional void. We become content, confident, and more at peace with ourselves,” she adds. Schools have even incorporated the mantra into their curriculums, helping children embrace their worth from a young age. “It’s truly amazing to see how these three words can change lives.”

Helping High Achievers Find True Fulfilment

For Marisa, working with high-profile clients is not about treating them differently, but rather about recognising that their challenges are often magnified by their circumstances. “Many of my high-profile clients struggle with the same core beliefs as everyone else—the fear of not being enough, the pressure to perform, and the constant scrutiny that comes with success,” she says. “Fame and fortune don’t protect you from feeling inadequate. In fact, they can amplify those feelings.”

One of the keys to Marisa’s success with these clients is her ability to delve into the root causes of their emotional struggles and help them reframe their stories. “I ask them not ‘What’s wrong with you?’ but ‘What happened to you?’ That’s when real transformation begins,” Marisa says. By reframing limiting beliefs and guiding her clients to recognise their true worth, Marisa helps them find a deeper sense of peace and fulfilment—one that isn’t reliant on external achievements.

The Science Behind RTT

One of the reasons RTT is so effective, Marisa explains, is because it taps into the power of neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to rewire itself based on new experiences and thoughts. “RTT is not just about treating symptoms. It’s about getting to the core of the issue, whether that’s an event from childhood or a limiting belief that’s been carried for years, and recoding the mind for success.”

She adds, “I’ve had countless clients who have come to me after years of traditional therapy with very little progress. After just one or two sessions of RTT, they experience a profound shift in their thinking and behaviour. That’s because we’re speaking directly to the subconscious mind, where these beliefs are stored. It’s like reprogramming a computer—once you change the core belief, everything else changes too.”

RTT is designed to deliver fast, long-lasting results, which makes it particularly appealing to those who may not have the time or patience for traditional, yearslong therapeutic approaches. “This isn’t woo-woo—it’s science. By harnessing the power of neuroplasticity, we can create rapid and lasting change,” Marisa asserts.

Resilience in the Face of Challenges

For someone who spends her days helping others work through their emotional challenges, Marisa is keenly aware of the importance of resilience. “I practise what I teach,” she says. “Every day, I start with gratitude—I wake up and remind myself of all the things I love in my life. Whether it’s my bed, my morning tea, or the simple act of being alive, I focus on the positive.”

This practice of gratitude, combined with her own “I Am Enough” philosophy, keeps Marisa grounded and focused, even when faced with the most heartwrenching stories from her clients. “It’s important to set emotional boundaries as a therapist. You have to stay fully present for your clients without absorbing their pain,” she notes. Self-care, mindfulness, and quality time with her family are all part of her routine, ensuring she remains resilient and ready to help others.

Shaping the Future of Mental Wellness

As the world of mental health continues to evolve, Marisa is committed to keeping RTT at the forefront of innovation. “I learn from every client, and every session is a treasure trove of discovery,” she says. Her goal is to make mental wellness accessible to all, not just those who can afford traditional therapy. “That’s why I started the RTT School, and I’ve trained over 17,000 therapists worldwide. My vision is to create a global movement that helps people unlock their potential, no matter where they are or what their background is.”

Looking to the future, Marisa is determined to continue inspiring change on a global scale. “My hope is that RTT will not only transform the lives of individuals but also shift the way we approach mental health as a whole. We need to move beyond just treating symptoms and focus on true transformation.”

A Simple Step to Overcome Self-Doubt

For those struggling with self-doubt, Marisa offers a simple yet powerful tip: “Repeat the affirmation, ‘I Am Enough.’ It may seem small, but it’s incredibly effective. Write it down, place it where you can see it every day, and let it remind you of your worth.” This practice, she says, can help reframe negative thoughts and foster a greater sense of self-acceptance.

The Ultimate Achievement: Peace of Mind

Marisa Peer’s work through RTT is changing lives—not just by helping people achieve success, but by guiding them toward true fulfilment. In a world that often equates success with external accomplishments, Marisa’s approach reminds us that the greatest achievement is peace of mind. Through her revolutionary therapy, Marisa is helping people redefine what it means to be successful, showing them that true happiness comes from within.

MASTER OF TIME: THE MARINE TOURBILLON EQUATION MARCHANTE 5887

Breguet’s platinum masterpiece balances heritage and innovation with oceanic elegance.

In the world of haute horology, few creations captivate as thoroughly as Breguet’s Marine Tourbillon Equation Marchante 5887. A grand complication in platinum, this exceptional timepiece serves as the flagship of Breguet’s Marine collection. Housing the revolutionary Calibre 581DPE, it melds technical ingenuity with artisanal artistry, creating a symphony of perpetual precision and timeless elegance.

The Legacy of a Watchmaker to the Royal Navy

The Marine collection traces its lineage to the visionary Abraham-Louis Breguet, who in 1815 was honoured with the title “Watchmaker to the French Royal Navy.” This prestigious role underpinned Breguet’s pioneering marine chronometers, indispensable tools for astronomical navigation. Today, that maritime spirit endures in the Marine series, where aesthetic codes evoke the ocean’s vast expanse—guilloché wave motifs, anchor-shaped details, and the commanding silhouette of the Marine 5887.

A Trio of Mechanical Marvels

At the heart of this timepiece lies an intricate interplay of three complications, each a testament to Breguet’s enduring genius:

The Equation Marchante: This mesmerising mechanism displays the deviation between solar time and calendar time, a feat achieved with the precision of a cam-driven lever. Two distinct minute hands—a luminescent Breguet hand for calendar time and a polished, gold-ringed hand for solar time—simplify reading this celestial discrepancy.

Perpetual Calendar: Acting as a mechanical diary, the retrograde date hand arcs gracefully over a scale, while day, month, and leap year indicators are revealed in bold apertures

Tourbillon: Abraham-Louis Breguet’s revolutionary creation defies gravity with a titanium cage and silicon balance spring, its hypnotic movement displayed at 5 o’clock.

Engineering and Artistry in Harmony

The Marine 5887 pairs precision engineering with artistic excellence. A hand-engraved platinum oscillating weight, etched with a wave motif, encircles the calibre’s breathtaking back, which features the Royal Louis warship and a compass rose—homages to the Marine collection’s seafaring roots. Guilloché artisans meticulously carve the watch’s dial, while its platinum case, fluted and paired with a black guilloché wave pattern, evokes moonlit oceans. Luminescent Roman numerals and nautical pennant hour markers further emphasise the marine theme, with every detail crafted to perfection.

Aesthetic Poetry for the Wrist

Since its debut in 2017, the Marine Equation Marchante 5887 has embodied Breguet’s commitment to excellence. Its platinum rendition, introduced this autumn, offers a new aesthetic—the cool sheen of platinum meets a black guilloché dial, conjuring the mystery of the open sea under a moonlit sky. At the centre, four hands weave their story: luminous Breguet-style hands mark the hours and minutes; the goldringed solar hand reflects celestial time; and the anchor-tipped date hand adds a touch of maritime charm.

A Timepiece Beyond Time

The Marine 5887 is more than a watch—it is a living masterpiece, where tradition meets modernity and form complements function. Encased in platinum armour, this horological marvel isn’t just a tool for timekeeping; it’s a poetic reminder of humanity’s connection to the celestial and the terrestrial, the past and the future. In the Marine Tourbillon Equation Marchante 5887, Breguet has crafted not just a watch but an enduring legacy. For those who dare to wear it, it offers the ultimate luxury: the mastery of time itself.

INTRODUCING THE NEW ERA OF BLANCPAIN’S FIFTY FATHOMS BATHYSCAPHE COLLECTION

Blancpain adds vibrant new timepieces to its iconic line with enhanced design and performance

Blancpain has expanded its legendary Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe collection with three dynamic additions, combining high-performance movements with innovative, striking design elements. As Official Partner and Timekeeper, the brand continues its commitment to the race that’s often described as “the Everest of the Seas”. The Diver NET Vendée Globe serves as a talisman for the brave men and women who embark on this extraordinary journey, one that tests the limits of human resilience and determination.

The Race of a Lifetime

The Vendée Globe is not for the faint of heart. Since its inception in 1989, only 200 sailors have dared to face this gruelling solo, non-stop, unassisted round-the-world race. Of these, just 114 have crossed the finish line. For 45,000 kilometres (or often more), skippers battle freezing temperatures, monstrous waves, and soul-crushing isolation aboard 60-foot monohulls capable of reaching 40 knots. This year, a record 40 skippers will set sail from Les Sables d’Olonne, France, on 10 November 2024. Their course spans the Atlantic, rounds South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, crosses the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and loops past Cape Horn before returning to the start. The winner is expected to finish in January after more than 70 days at sea, while the slowest competitors have until March to complete the challenge.

Sustainability Meets Innovation

The Diver NET Vendée Globe is as much about the future of our oceans as it is about celebrating human endurance. By integrating recycled and upcycled materials into its design, Ulysse Nardin reinforces its commitment to reducing the environmental impact of haute horlogerie. The watch embodies the maison’s bold vision: luxury that respects the planet while honouring its maritime heritage. Its robust construction and adventurous aesthetic echo the ocean’s raw power, with a design that balances functionality and beauty. The Diver NET Vendée Globe is a tool for the modern-day sailor—a beacon of sustainability, precision, and courage.

For the Few Who Dare

This 10th edition of the Vendée Globe reminds us why the race remains one of the ultimate tests of human endurance. Whether battling the elements or pushing through sheer exhaustion, these skippers exemplify the very essence of bravery. For those who wear the Diver NET Vendée Globe, it’s more than a timepiece. It’s a badge of honour, a tribute to the oceans, and a celebration of the human spirit’s unyielding strength. With Ulysse Nardin’s legacy on their wrists, they carry a piece of the sea—and its story—with them.

ORCHESTRAL HOROLOGY: BVLGARI’S STRIKING SYMPHONY

Octo Roma Grande Sonnerie Tourbillon, Octo Roma Carillon Tourbillon, and Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater Carbon redefine musical timekeeping.

Bvlgari conducts a symphony of innovation with its latest trio of chiming masterpieces: the Octo Roma Grande Sonnerie Tourbillon, Octo Roma Carillon Tourbillon, and Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater Carbon. These horological instruments are not just timepieces; they are musical expressions crafted for the wrist, blending Roman heritage, cutting-edge engineering, and acoustic mastery into a captivating ensemble.

A New Soundscape in Timekeeping

Each creation represents a distinct chapter in Bvlgari’s exploration of horological acoustics. The Octo Roma Grande Sonnerie Tourbillon and Octo Roma Carillon Tourbillon introduce the tritone harmonic interval, a dissonant yet intriguing scale often referred to as the Devil’s Interval. This bold acoustic choice was developed in collaboration with Lorenzo Viotti, the 34-year-old conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra. “The tritone divides the octave and introduces tension,” says Viotti. “It creates a striking contrast to the symmetry of the watch’s design, adding an element of surprise and drama.”In the Octo Roma Grande Sonnerie, the tritone replaces the Westminster tones, creating a daring reinterpretation of the traditional grande sonnerie. Chiming the hours, quarters, and minutes, this titanium marvel delivers a four-note quarter-hour strike unlike any other, designed to intrigue and awaken the senses.

Material Innovation Meets Acoustic Excellence

Bvlgari’s mastery goes beyond sound. The materials used in these timepieces—titanium, rose gold, and Carbon Thin Ply (CTP)—enhance their unique sound profiles. The Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater Carbon, the thinnest chiming watch ever made, employs lightweight and rigid CTP to deliver crystalline acoustics. Meanwhile, the Grande Sonnerie’s titanium case and the Carillon Tourbillon’s rose gold construction resonate with distinct tonal nuances, showcasing Bvlgari’s unparalleled ability to harmonise engineering and artistry.

The Repertoire of a Maestro

Few brands can claim a portfolio as comprehensive as Bvlgari’s in chiming timepieces. From minute repeaters with their two-tone melodies to the grande sonnerie, Bvlgari’s watches represent the full spectrum of chiming complications.

The Octo Roma Grande Sonnerie Tourbillon is powered by the BVL800 calibre, capable of chiming the hours and quarters automatically, with additional chiming on demand.

The Octo Roma Carillon Tourbillon, equipped with the BVL428 calibre, offers three-note chimes for the hours, quarters, and minutes.

The Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater Carbon redefines ultra-thin watchmaking with a record-setting 3.12mm movement thickness, making it a marvel of both form and function.

Breaking Boundaries with Disruptive Harmony

By embracing the tritone’s provocative dissonance, Bvlgari challenges the conventions of horological musicality. This radical approach aligns with the maison’s Roman roots, where Baroque aesthetics and a taste for the dramatic have long flourished. As violins and pianos have evolved with new materials, so too have these watches, proving that high horology is not confined to tradition but thrives on reinvention.

The Ultimate Recital

With the Octo Roma Grande Sonnerie Tourbillon, Carillon Tourbillon, and Finissimo Minute Repeater Carbon, Bvlgari composes a new chapter in acoustic watchmaking—one where sound and time intersect in bold, unprecedented ways. Whether striking a note of harmony or dissonance, these watches are not merely instruments of time but expressions of artistry, engineering, and emotion. This recital of wristbound chamber music is a testament to Bvlgari’s ability to push the boundaries of what a timepiece can be. It’s not just the sound of time; it’s the sound of a revolution.

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA: A HUB OF ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATION

WHERE THE BEAUTY OF NATURE MEETS THE INGENUITY OF HUMAN SUSTAINABILITY.

Cape Town is a city that evokes instant awe. Towering mountains, pristine beaches, and sprawling vineyards converge in this South African gem, making it one of the world’s most picturesque destinations. But there’s much more to Cape Town than its postcard-perfect landscapes. In 2024, the city’s role as host of the Earthshot Prize awards highlights its transformation into a global hub for sustainability and environmental innovation. Founded by Prince William, the Earthshot Prize celebrates groundbreaking solutions to the planet’s most pressing ecological challenges. For Cape Town, a city that has weathered its own environmental crises, the event is a moment of pride and affirmation. It’s also a chance to showcase its forward-thinking initiatives that are setting an example for urban centres worldwide.

Cape Town’s Environmental Awakening

Cape Town’s journey toward sustainability was catalysed by one of the most dramatic environmental challenges in recent history: the Day Zero water crisis of 2018. At the height of a devastating drought, the city faced the prospect of running out of water entirely. For months, residents queued at water collection points, businesses implemented drastic conservation measures, and the government scrambled to avert disaster. It was a stark reminder of the fragility of natural resources and the consequences of climate change. But out of this crisis came an extraordinary transformation. Cape Town adopted a suite of watersaving strategies that included desalination plants, groundwater extraction, and public education campaigns. Residents became acutely aware of their water usage, learning to recycle greywater and limit consumption to the bare essentials. By the time the rains returned, the city had not only averted disaster but also emerged as a global leader in urban water management. Today, Cape Town’s approach to water conservation is studied by cities around the world. “We learned the hard way,” admits a city official. “But what came out of Day Zero is a community that understands the value of its resources.”

A Leader in Renewable Energy

While the water crisis may have put Cape Town on the map for resilience, the city has also been quietly building its reputation in renewable energy. South Africa’s dependence on coal has long been a point of contention, but Cape Town is leading the charge to transition to cleaner alternatives. The city has invested heavily in wind and solar energy, with large-scale installations supplying power to its grid. A standout project is the Darling Wind Farm, which produces renewable electricity while minimising its environmental footprint. Cape Town’s Green Economy Strategy is another ambitious initiative aimed at creating jobs through sustainable industries. From recycling programmes to solar panel manufacturing, the city has found ways to align economic growth with environmental stewardship. “We see sustainability as an opportunity, not a burden,” explains a local entrepreneur. “It’s about building a future where people and the planet thrive together.”

The Earthshot Prize: A Natural Fit

While the water crisis may have put Cape Town on the map for resilience, the city has also been quietly Given its environmental credentials, Cape Town was an obvious choice to host the 2024 Earthshot Prize awards. The ceremony, held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, is expected to attract world leaders, scientists, and innovators from across the globe. The event will honour individuals and organisations whose solutions address key challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. For Cape Town, the Earthshot Prize is more than just an accolade—it’s an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the city’s own innovations. Local companies like GreenCape are developing clean technology solutions that are making waves far beyond South Africa’s borders. Meanwhile, conservation projects within the Cape Floral Kingdom, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are working to protect one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet.

Eco-Tourism in the Mother City

Cape Town has long been a magnet for tourists, and its natural beauty remains a major draw. However, the city’s approach to tourism has shifted in recent years to prioritise sustainability. Eco-friendly activities abound, allowing visitors to explore the landscape while supporting conservation efforts.

Hiking Table Mountain, for example, is a quintessential Cape Town experience. But what many visitors don’t realise is that the mountain is home to over 2,200 species of plants, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth. Guided tours led by conservationists not only enhance the experience but also educate visitors about the importance of preserving this unique ecosystem. Similarly, Cape Town’s vineyards are adopting greener practices.

In Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, wineries are introducing organic farming methods and reducing water usage. Some, like Spier Wine Farm, have gone a step further by integrating community empowerment projects into their operations, ensuring that sustainability benefits both the land and its people.

Cultural Sustainability

Sustainability in Cape Town isn’t limited to the environment—it extends to preserving its rich cultural heritage. The city is a melting pot of influences, shaped by indigenous Khoisan traditions, Dutch colonisation, and modern South African diversity. Initiatives like the Iziko Museums’ green building project aim to create spaces where Cape Town’s history can be celebrated while reducing the environmental impact of cultural institutions.

The Oranjezicht City Farm Market is another example of cultural and ecological harmony. Set against the backdrop of Table Mountain, this market champions local, organic produce and serves as a platform for small-scale farmers. Visitors can sample artisanal goods, attend workshops on sustainable living, and engage with a community that values both tradition and innovation.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite its progress, Cape Town faces ongoing challenges in its quest for sustainability. Socioeconomic inequality remains a pressing issue, with many communities lacking access to the resources needed to adapt to environmental changes. Addressing these disparities is essential to ensuring that sustainability efforts benefit all of the city’s residents. At the same time, Cape Town’s successes offer a blueprint for other cities navigating similar challenges. The city’s ability to turn crisis into opportunity is a testament to the resilience of its people and the power of collective action.

A Vision for the Future

Cape Town’s story is still being written, but one thing is clear: it is a city that refuses to stand still. From its recovery after the water crisis to its leadership in renewable energy and eco-tourism, Cape Town exemplifies what is possible when a community comes together with a shared purpose. As the world gathers in Cape Town for the Earthshot Prize, the city’s message is unmistakable. It’s a call to action for other cities to embrace sustainability—not just as an ideal, but as a way of life. And for those who visit Cape Town, it’s an invitation to experience a destination that is as inspiring as it is beautiful.

WHERE DOES THE NEW AMERICAN DREAM TAKE YOU?

Chasing the American Dream Abroad

We often hear about it, whether in films or on the news—a phrase and concept that appears everywhere: The American Dream. This term refers to the United States’ national ethos, promising freedom and opportunity for everyone to achieve a better life. While people around the world are looking to America to make their dreams come true, some Americans are now chasing the dream abroad.

Beyond the Seas

Recent surveys reveal a striking trend among American millionaires. Approximately 53% of wealthy U.S. citizens are making plans to leave the country following the presidential election, regardless of the outcome. Another survey shows that younger millionaires are the most likely to leave, with 64% of millionaires aged 18 to 29 saying they are “very interested” in seeking golden visas through residency-by-investment programmes overseas. “Residency and citizenship are gateways to their goals—not the goals themselves,” says Tatiana Muntean, Associate Vice President and an expert on U.S. markets. “Now Americans are realising they can obtain a passport and/or residency as part of their investment,” Muntean confirms. Interest in residency and citizenship-by-investment programmes has been growing in the U.S. for years, and COVID-19 accelerated this trend, as those with wealth sought greater freedom of movement. The presidential election has also driven a fresh wave of interest.

Not Only “Who” but Also “Why”

Securing second or third passports has become “the talk of the town” and remains a notable trend among millionaires. “The United States will always be home, [but] a double taxation policy pushes many to consider renouncing their American citizenship in favour of better deals found abroad,” says Armand Arton, President of Arton Capital. Political and economic uncertainty, coupled with the U.S.’s citizenship-based taxation—a policy that taxes its citizens on worldwide income regardless of where they live—has been a significant motivator for those seeking alternatives or “Plan B, C, or even D” abroad. While lower tax policies under certain administrations could ease this burden, the desire to leave remains strong, especially for those who can afford it.

Elsewhere, but Where?

“The love affair between Americans and Europe has been going on for a very long time,” says Arton. “It comes with a price, and they are totally fine investing a couple hundred thousand dollars or half a million into a property or a fund.” Real estate investment remains popular among Americans, who view it as a “win-win” solution that guarantees freedom of mobility and lifetime assets. For Americans seeking lifestyle enhancements, financial advantages, and expanded travel freedom, several programmes stand out as top choices.

Portugal: The Golden Visa programme offers access to the European Union and the Schengen Area. Combined with the Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) regime, which provides tax benefits on foreign income, Portugal is a top choice for retirees and remote workers.

The Caribbean: Nations such as Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Grenada offer citizenship-by-investment programmes known for swift processing and passports granting visa-free travel to numerous destinations.

The UAE: Particularly Dubai, appeals to those seeking long-term residencies with no taxation on global income. While direct citizenship is rare, the UAE’s streamlined residency options are ideal for entrepreneurs and individuals seeking strategic financial benefits.

The Good, the Bad, and the Promising

As Americans redefine the American Dream, an increasing number of wealthy individuals are looking abroad for better opportunities, seeking freedom, mobility, and financial advantages. While options abroad offer potential for new legacies and greater security, navigating the complexities of global wealth management and shifting political landscapes remains a challenge. The American Dream is evolving, and for many, it now extends beyond borders.

Act ‘When’ It Truly Matters

The ‘when’ moment is now. If you’re waiting for things to get better or worse, who knows when that will happen? At Arton Capital, we are committed to involving you in the global citizen movement and empowering you to become one, paving the way for a better, brighter, and safer future. It’s time to explore your options. Reach out today and let us help.

BIOMETRIC SECURITY: ARE WE FINALLY READY FOR A PASSWORD-FREE WORLD?

As fingerprints, facial recognition, and advanced biometrics replace traditional passwords, are we prepared for a future without the need to memorise strings of characters?

For decades, passwords have been the cornerstone of digital security, guarding everything from email accounts to bank transactions. But in a world where cyber threats evolve daily, passwords—no matter how complex—are proving to be an increasingly weak link. Enter biometric security: a technology that uses unique physical or behavioural characteristics, such as fingerprints, facial structure, or voice patterns, to verify identity.

With the global biometric market expected to surpass $83 billion by 2027, according to Allied Market Research, the shift toward a password-free future seems inevitable. But while biometrics promise convenience and heightened security, they also raise critical questions about privacy, ethics, and the risks of an over-reliance on technology.

The Case for Biometrics: Why Passwords Are Failing Us

Passwords, once the gold standard of digital security, are now a major vulnerability. A 2022 report by Verizon revealed that over 80% of data breaches involve stolen or weak passwords. Users often recycle passwords across multiple platforms, making them easy targets for hackers.

“Passwords are inherently flawed,” explains cybersecurity expert Rachel Tobin. “They rely on human memory, which is fallible, and they’re easily compromised through phishing or brute-force attacks.”

Biometric security addresses these weaknesses by using identifiers that are unique to each individual. Unlike passwords, biometric data cannot be easily guessed, stolen, or shared.

Fingerprint Recognition: The Mainstream Pioneer

Fingerprint recognition has been the gateway technology for biometrics, thanks to its integration into everyday devices. Apple’s Touch ID, launched in 2013, set the stage for widespread adoption, allowing users to unlock their phones, make payments, and access secure apps with just a touch. Today, fingerprint scanners are a standard feature on most smartphones and laptops. But the technology has advanced significantly in recent years. Ultrasonic fingerprint sensors, like those found in Samsung’s Galaxy series, use sound waves to create a 3D map of the finger’s ridges, offering greater accuracy and resistance to spoofing attempts.

Facial Recognition: Convenience Meets Controversy

Facial recognition is another cornerstone of biometric security. Apple’s Face ID has popularised the technology, making it as simple as glancing at your phone to unlock it or approve a transaction. Beyond smartphones, facial recognition is being integrated into airport security systems, retail payment terminals, and even healthcare applications. For instance, some hospitals use facial recognition to verify patient identities and streamline check-ins. However, the technology is not without its critics. Privacy advocates warn that facial recognition can be used for mass surveillance, raising concerns about misuse by governments or corporations. A 2020 study by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) also highlighted issues with accuracy, particularly for individuals with darker skin tones. “Facial recognition is convenient, but it’s not perfect,” says Tobin. “Until these biases are addressed, its widespread use could lead to unintended consequences.”

Vein Mapping: The Next Frontier

While fingerprint and facial recognition dominate the market, newer forms of biometrics are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. Vein mapping, for example, scans the unique patterns of blood vessels beneath the skin to verify identity. Companies like Hitachi have developed vein mapping systems that are nearly impossible to spoof, as the patterns are hidden and require live blood flow to be detected. These systems are already being used in ATMs and secure facilities in Japan, offering a glimpse of what the future of biometrics could look like.

Voice Authentication and Behavioural Biometrics

Voice authentication is another growing field, particularly in industries like banking and customer service. Banks such as HSBC use voice recognition to verify customers over the phone, providing an additional layer of security.

Behavioural biometrics, which analyse patterns like typing speed, mouse movements, or gait, are also emerging as powerful tools for authentication. Unlike traditional biometrics, these methods are passive, meaning they work in the background without requiring specific actions from the user.

Multi-Modal Systems: Combining Strengths

To address the limitations of individual biometric methods, multi-modal systems are becoming increasingly popular. These systems combine two or more types of biometrics—for example, fingerprint and facial recognition—to enhance security. “Multi-modal biometrics provide a fail-safe,” explains cybersecurity consultant Mark Elwood. “If one system fails or is compromised, the second layer ensures continued protection.”

The Risks of Going Password-Free

While biometrics offer clear advantages, they are not without risks. One of the biggest concerns is the irreversible nature of biometric data. Unlike a password, which can be changed if compromised, biometric traits like fingerprints or facial structures are permanent. A high-profile case in 2019 highlighted this vulnerability when a database containing the biometric data of over one million people was exposed due to poor security measures.

Such incidents underscore the importance of robust encryption and data protection protocols. Another issue is the potential for exclusion. Biometric systems may not work well for certain individuals, such as those with physical disabilities or conditions that alter their appearance. This raises questions about the inclusivity of a password-free future.

Ethical and Privacy Concerns

The collection and storage of biometric data also present significant ethical dilemmas. Who owns this data, and how is it being used? Governments and corporations have been criticised for using facial recognition technology for surveillance purposes, often without public consent. To address these concerns, countries like the European Union have introduced stringent regulations under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The U.S. is also seeing a rise in state-level laws governing biometric data, such as Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA). “Biometric security must be implemented responsibly,” says Elwood. “Without clear regulations, we risk undermining the very trust these systems are designed to build.”

The Future of Biometrics

Despite these challenges, the future of biometric security looks promising. Advances in AI are expected to improve accuracy and reduce biases, while decentralised systems like blockchain could enhance data privacy by eliminating centralised storage points. Companies are also exploring next-generation biometrics, such as heart rate analysis and even brainwave patterns, to push the boundaries of what’s possible.

The Road Ahead

Are we ready for a password-free world? The answer lies in how we address the challenges of security, inclusivity, and privacy. While biometrics represent a significant leap forward in digital security, they are not a panacea.

Instead, they should be viewed as part of a broader, multi-layered approach to protecting personal data. For now, biometrics offer a glimpse of a future where security is as seamless as it is sophisticated. As the technology continues to evolve, it promises to make our digital lives safer—and simpler.

EDTECH REVOLUTION: PERSONALISED LEARNING THROUGH VR

AND AI

How virtual reality and artificial intelligence are transforming education into an interactive, accessible experience.

Education is undergoing a seismic shift. For centuries, classrooms followed a traditional model: rows of desks, a chalkboard, and a teacher guiding students through a standardised curriculum. But today, technological innovation is disrupting that framework, creating opportunities for personalised, interactive, and immersive learning. Virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) are at the forefront of this revolution, empowering educators and students alike and making quality education accessible on a global scale.

The Need for Transformation

Education has always been considered a great equaliser, but disparities in access and quality remain stark. According to UNESCO, more than 244 million children and youth worldwide are out of school. Even for those with access, standardised teaching methods often fail to cater to individual learning needs. EdTech is emerging as a solution to these challenges. By leveraging VR and AI, it offers tools that adapt to diverse learners and environments. The global EdTech market, valued at $254 billion in 2021, is projected to reach $605 billion by 2027, according to HolonIQ.

Virtual Reality: Immersive Learning at Its Best

Imagine studying the anatomy of the human body by “stepping inside” a virtual model, or exploring the Great Pyramid of Giza without leaving your home. Virtual reality classrooms are turning these scenarios into reality. By creating immersive environments, VR enables students to experience subjects in ways that traditional methods simply cannot replicate.

Platforms like Meta’s Quest for Education and zSpace are leading this charge. Quest for Education allows students to engage with historical landmarks, scientific experiments, and even abstract concepts like mathematics in a 3D space. Meanwhile, zSpace offers virtual science labs, where students can dissect virtual frogs or explore chemical reactions safely and interactively. “For students, engagement is everything,” says Dr. Priya Dutta, an education technology researcher. “VR transforms passive learning into active exploration, which not only enhances comprehension but also improves retention.” One particularly impactful application of VR is in medical education. Tools like Osso VR simulate surgical procedures, allowing medical students and professionals to practise complex techniques in a risk-free environment. A study published in The Journal of Medical Education found that VR-trained surgeons performed 230% better in real-life procedures than those trained through traditional methods.

AI Tutors: Customised Learning for Every Student

While VR captures imaginations, AI brings the power of data-driven personalisation to the classroom. AI tutors, such as those offered by platforms like Socratic by Google and Knewton Alta, analyse a student’s learning habits, strengths, and weaknesses to provide tailored lessons and feedback. “Every student learns differently,” notes Sal Khan, founder of Khan Academy. “AI gives educators the ability to meet students where they are, rather than expecting them to conform to a standard pace.” Squirrel AI, a Chinese EdTech platform, exemplifies the potential of AI-driven learning. Using deep learning algorithms, Squirrel AI provides customised lesson plans that adapt in real-time. The results have been impressive: students using the platform have demonstrated significantly improved academic performance, particularly in subjects like mathematics and science.

Breaking Barriers with Technology

One of the most significant benefits of VR and AI in education is their ability to break down barriers. For students in remote or underserved areas, these technologies offer access to resources that would otherwise be unavailable. Take Labster, a platform that provides virtual science labs for schools lacking physical facilities. By simulating experiments in VR, Labster enables students to explore scientific concepts without expensive equipment or safety risks.

Similarly, AI-driven platforms like Duolingo offer language instruction tailored to individual proficiency levels, making education accessible to millions worldwide. In refugee camps and low-income regions, organisations like Rumie are leveraging VR and AI to deliver educational content that meets local needs. For example, Rumie’s digital learning library includes lessons on entrepreneurship, health, and basic literacy, all designed to empower communities with limited resources.

Challenges in EdTech Adoption

While the potential of VR and AI is vast, their adoption is not without challenges. Cost remains a significant barrier, particularly in developing countries where access to basic education is already limited. Furthermore, concerns about data privacy and security loom large, as AI platforms often require extensive user data to function effectively. Screen time is another contentious issue. Critics argue that excessive reliance on technology can lead to physical and psychological strain, particularly for younger students. “The goal should always be to complement, not replace, human interaction,” cautions Dr. Dutta.

The Teacher’s Role in the EdTech Revolution

Contrary to fears that technology will replace educators, experts believe it will enhance their roles. “Teachers will always be at the centre of education,” says Khan. “Technology is a tool that empowers them to be more effective and to focus on what they do best: inspiring and guiding students.” For instance, AI platforms can handle repetitive tasks like grading or administrative work, freeing teachers to spend more time on personalised instruction. Similarly, VR can provide supplemental experiences, allowing teachers to incorporate immersive lessons into their traditional curricula.

The Road Ahead: Democratising Education

As VR and AI continue to evolve, their potential to democratise education is becoming increasingly apparent. Multi-lingual AI tutors are already breaking down language barriers, while advancements in VR hardware are making immersive learning more affordable. In the coming years, hybrid models that combine in-person instruction with VR and AI are expected to become the norm. For example, students could attend physical classes but use AI tutors for after-school reinforcement or VR labs for hands-on experiments.

A New Era of Learning

The EdTech revolution is not just about improving test scores or making lessons more engaging—it’s about redefining what education can be. By leveraging VR and AI, we are moving closer to a world where every student has access to quality, personalised learning experiences, regardless of their location or socioeconomic status.

As Sal Khan puts it, “Education is the single most powerful tool for equality. With technology, we have the opportunity to make that tool available to everyone.” For educators, students, and policymakers, the message is clear: the future of learning is here, and it’s immersive, personalised, and boundless.

KYOTO’S ART AND ARCHITECTURE RENAISSANCE

WHERE ANCIENT TRADITIONS AND CONTEMPORARY CREATIVITY INTERTWINE TO REDEFINE ONE OF JAPAN’S MOST ICONIC CITIES.

Kyoto is a city of whispers. Its cobblestone streets and centuries-old wooden machiya houses seem to hum with stories of imperial courts, Buddhist monks, and geisha culture. Once the capital of Japan, this city of over a thousand temples has long been a symbol of tradition. But in 2024, Kyoto is proving that it is not content to remain a relic of the past.

With a surge of contemporary art installations, cutting-edge architecture, and revitalised cultural landmarks, Kyoto is experiencing a renaissance that bridges its storied history with the bold spirit of modern Japan. The transformation is subtle yet striking—much like Kyoto itself. It is a city that doesn’t announce its innovations with fanfare but instead invites you to discover them, layer by layer.

The Dialogue Between Old and New

Nowhere is Kyoto’s renaissance more apparent than in its architectural landscape. While the city’s historical treasures, like the Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji) and Fushimi Inari Shrine, remain its heart, contemporary design is adding a fresh beat to its rhythm. The Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art is a prime example.

Originally built in 1933, the museum underwent a meticulous renovation completed in 2020. The redesign preserved its Showa-era charm while incorporating sleek, minimalist elements that breathe new life into the space. Its new wing, designed by architect Jun Aoki, houses exhibitions that range from traditional Japanese art to avant-garde installations.

Another standout is the Ace Hotel Kyoto, housed in a former telephone company building. Designed by the legendary Kengo Kuma, the architect behind Tokyo’s 2020 Olympic Stadium, the hotel juxtaposes industrial brick with timber and tatami-inspired details. It’s a space that feels both resolutely contemporary and deeply rooted in Kyoto’s aesthetic traditions.

A

Flourishing

Contemporary Art Scene

Kyoto has always been a cultural hub, but in recent years, its art scene has expanded far beyond its traditional boundaries. The city now plays host to cutting-edge exhibitions that challenge and reinterpret Japanese cultural motifs. The Kyoto Experiment, an annual performing arts festival, draws international talent to collaborate with local artists on innovative works that explore themes of identity, history, and futurism.

One of the most talked-about additions to Kyoto’s art scene is teamLab Borderless Kyoto, an immersive digital art experience that transforms traditional Japanese landscapes into mesmerising light and sound installations. Visitors can wander through a virtual forest where cherry blossoms bloom in perpetual spring or a digital river that shifts and flows around their feet. It’s a stunning example of how Kyoto’s artistic spirit has evolved to embrace new mediums. Even manga, a distinctly modern Japanese art form, finds a home in Kyoto. The Kyoto International Manga Museum celebrates the genre’s cultural significance, offering everything from vintage collections to interactive workshops for aspiring artists.

Revitalising Historical Icons

While Kyoto’s embrace of the contemporary is exciting, its commitment to preserving its past remains steadfast. In recent years, several of the city’s most iconic sites have undergone extensive restorations. Kiyomizu-dera, one of Kyoto’s most visited temples, recently completed a multi-year project to restore its wooden stage and thatched roof. The restoration adhered to ancient carpentry techniques, ensuring that this UNESCO World Heritage site retains its authenticity. Similarly, the Nishijin Textile Centre has breathed new life into Kyoto’s storied weaving tradition. Known for producing exquisite silk fabrics used in kimono-making, the centre now offers live demonstrations and hands-on workshops where visitors can try their hand at weaving. It’s an opportunity to connect with a craft that dates back over a thousand years.

Cultural Immersion for the Modern Traveller

Kyoto’s appeal lies not only in its visual beauty but in its immersive experiences. Visitors can delve into traditional crafts through workshops in pottery, calligraphy, or ikebana (flower arranging). Tea ceremonies, held in serene gardens or intimate tatami rooms, offer a glimpse into the rituals that have shaped Japanese culture for centuries. For those seeking culinary inspiration, Kyoto is a paradise. The city’s Michelin-starred restaurants, like Kikunoi and Hyotei, elevate kaiseki dining to an art form. But Kyoto’s culinary treasures aren’t confined to high-end establishments. Nishiki Market, often called “Kyoto’s Kitchen,” is a bustling maze of stalls offering everything from fresh seafood to matcha-flavoured sweets. And for a truly unique experience, Kyoto’s izakayas (Japanese pubs) provide an unfiltered slice of local life. Pairing seasonal dishes with sake brewed in the nearby Fushimi district, these cosy establishments offer a warm welcome and a taste of Kyoto’s everyday charm.

Sustainability in Kyoto’s Evolution

As Kyoto undergoes its artistic and architectural revival, sustainability remains at the forefront of its evolution. Many of the city’s modern developments are designed with environmental consciousness in mind. The aforementioned Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art incorporates energy-efficient systems and eco-friendly materials, setting a precedent for green architecture in Japan. Additionally, efforts to reduce tourism’s impact on the city have led to initiatives that promote off-the-beaten-path attractions. Visitors are encouraged to explore lesser-known temples and shrines, spreading foot traffic away from crowded hotspots like Arashiyama’s Bamboo Grove. The city has also introduced eco-tourism programmes, such as guided cycling tours that take travellers through Kyoto’s lush countryside, past rice paddies, and into quiet villages where traditional lifestyles endure. These initiatives not only protect Kyoto’s natural environment but also offer a deeper connection to its cultural heritage.

Kyoto’s Timeless Allure

Kyoto’s renaissance is not a departure from its identity but an extension of it. The city’s ability to innovate while preserving its roots is a testament to its resilience and creativity. It is a place where past and present coexist harmoniously, where a tea house can share a street with a contemporary gallery, and where a 1,000-year-old temple can inspire the design of a cutting-edge hotel. For travellers, Kyoto offers more than just a destination—it offers a journey through time, art, and culture. Whether you’re marvelling at the intricate details of a restored temple, losing yourself in the surreal beauty of a digital art installation, or sipping green tea in a centuries-old garden, Kyoto invites you to slow down and savour the richness of its spirit. As the city continues to evolve, one thing remains constant: Kyoto’s commitment to beauty, craftsmanship, and the seamless blending of old and new. It’s a renaissance that feels less like a reinvention and more like the next chapter in a story that has always been worth telling.

TECH FOR MENTAL HEALTH: DEVICES THAT SUPPORT WELLNESS

From brain-monitoring headsets to AI-driven meditation apps, technology is shaping the future of mental wellness.

Mental health has always been a vital aspect of overall wellbeing, yet it is only in recent years that it has gained widespread attention as a priority in healthcare. Stress, anxiety, depression, and burnout have become increasingly prevalent in a fast-paced, hyper-connected world. While therapy and medication remain essential tools in addressing these challenges, technology is offering a new dimension of support. From wearable devices to virtual therapy platforms, innovations in mental health tech are making care more accessible, personalised, and effective than ever before.

The Rising Need for Mental Health Solutions

The Middle East has become a key player in the global impact investing space, driven by both government The mental health crisis is not just a human issue; it’s also an economic one. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), depression and anxiety disorders cost the global economy an estimated $1 trillion annually in lost productivity.

The pandemic further exacerbated the issue, with many individuals struggling to adapt to isolation, uncertainty, and new stressors. In response, mental health technologies have gained momentum, offering a range of solutions to meet the growing demand for support. The global mental health tech market is projected to exceed $17.5 billion by 2030, according to Allied Market Research. This surge reflects not only the demand for such technologies but also the increasing recognition of mental health as a fundamental component of overall wellbeing.

Brain Wave Monitoring: Understanding the Mind

One of the most exciting innovations in mental health tech is the development of brain wave monitoring devices. Products like the Muse S headband allow users to track their brain activity during meditation or relaxation exercises. By providing real-time feedback, these devices help individuals understand their mental state and improve their focus.

The Muse S (Gen 2), launched in 2023, takes the technology a step further with sleep-tracking features. It monitors brain waves, heart rate, and body movements, offering insights into sleep quality and stress triggers. “People are beginning to realise that mental health is deeply tied to our physical state,” explains Dr. Ashok Gupta, a neuroscientist specialising in stress management. “Devices like Muse bridge that gap by turning abstract feelings into tangible data.”

Other innovations in this space include Kernel Flow, a neuroimaging device initially developed for research but now being adapted for consumer use. By measuring brain activity in greater detail, it provides users with a clearer understanding of how their thoughts and emotions affect their overall wellbeing.

Virtual Therapy: Accessible and Affordable

Therapy has long been considered the gold standard in mental health care, but barriers such as cost, availability, and stigma have left many without access. Virtual therapy platforms like BetterHelp and Talkspace aim to address these challenges by connecting users with licensed therapists via text, video, or voice sessions.

While these platforms have already made therapy more accessible, newer tools like Woebot Health are leveraging artificial intelligence to take virtual therapy to the next level. Woebot, an AI-driven chatbot, engages users in conversations based on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Unlike traditional therapy, Woebot offers instant support, making it ideal for individuals who may not yet feel ready to consult a human therapist. A Stanford University study found that Woebot users experienced significant reductions in symptoms of anxiety and depression after just two weeks of use. “The key is immediacy,” says Alison Darcy, Woebot’s founder. “Sometimes, people just need someone—or something—to listen and respond in the moment.”

Meditation Apps with AI Insights

Meditation apps like Calm and Headspace have become household names, but the latest wave of innovation is integrating artificial intelligence to enhance user experience. AI-driven features analyse user behaviour and preferences to provide personalised meditation sessions tailored to specific goals, such as improving sleep, reducing stress, or boosting focus. The app Myndlift combines meditation with neurofeedback, using an EEG headband to measure brain activity during sessions. As users meditate, the app provides real-time adjustments to ensure the exercises are as effective as possible. This blend of mindfulness and data-driven insights has positioned Myndlift as a leader in the field.

Wearable Devices for Mental Wellness

Beyond brain wave monitoring, wearable devices are playing a crucial role in promoting mental health. Products like the Oura Ring and Apple Watch now include features that track stress levels, monitor heart rate variability (HRV), and even provide guided breathing exercises. One particularly innovative product is Apollo Neuro, a wearable band that uses gentle vibrations to stimulate the vagus nerve, a key player in the body’s stress response system. According to a study published in Frontiers in Psychiatry, users of Apollo Neuro reported improved resilience to stress and better sleep quality after just a few weeks of use.

Addressing Stigma Through Technology

One of the most significant advantages of mental health tech is its ability to reduce stigma. Many individuals who might shy away from traditional therapy feel more comfortable engaging with apps or devices in the privacy of their homes. These tools also offer a sense of empowerment, allowing users to take proactive steps toward their mental health without fear of judgment.

The Road Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities

While the potential of mental health tech is vast, it is not without challenges. Privacy concerns remain a significant issue, particularly when dealing with sensitive data like brain wave activity or therapy session records. Ensuring that these technologies are regulated and secure is critical to building trust with users. Moreover, experts caution against relying solely on tech-based solutions. “These tools are valuable, but they should complement, not replace, traditional mental health care,” says Dr. Gupta. “A device can provide insights, but it can’t replicate the depth of human connection that a therapist offers.”

The Future of Mental Wellness Tech

Despite these challenges, the future of mental health tech is undeniably bright. Companies like Flow Neuroscience are exploring transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) devices to treat depression, while virtual reality platforms are being developed to simulate therapeutic environments for trauma recovery. As the field evolves, the focus will likely shift toward holistic solutions that combine multiple technologies. For example, imagine a wearable that not only tracks stress levels but also syncs with a meditation app to suggest real-time interventions. In the words of Michael Acton Smith, co-founder of Calm, “We’re at the beginning of a revolution in mental health care. Technology doesn’t just connect us—it helps heal us.” For individuals navigating the complexities of modern life, these innovations offer hope, insight, and a path to greater wellbeing.

GORPCORE:

OUTDOOR AESTHETICS IN URBAN FASHION

WHERE FUNCTIONALITY MEETS STYLE, GORPCORE IS TAKING CITY STREETS BY STORM.

The term “gorpcore” may sound unfamiliar, but its influence is undeniable. Named after the hiker’s staple “good ol’ raisins and peanuts,” this trend has transformed outdoor gear into everyday fashion, blending functionality with urban cool. From fleece jackets to cargo trousers, Gorpcore bridges the gap between practicality and streetwear, making it one of the most inclusive and wearable trends of 2024

The Origins of Gorpcore

Gorpcore emerged from the worlds of hiking and outdoor exploration, where brands like Patagonia and The North Face set the standard for performance gear. Over time, these functional pieces began appearing in urban settings, embraced by a generation seeking comfort, durability, and authenticity in their wardrobes. “Gorpcore is about adaptability,” explains streetwear designer Hiro Tanaka. “It’s gear that can take you from the trails to the city without missing a beat.”

Key Pieces Defining the Trend

At its core, Gorpcore revolves around technical fabrics, oversized silhouettes, and utilitarian design.

Outerwear: The puffer jacket remains a cornerstone, with brands like Arc›teryx and Moncler blending high-performance insulation with stylish cuts.

Fleece: Once reserved for camping trips, fleece pullovers from Patagonia or Columbia have become city staples, often layered over graphic tees for a modern edge.

Cargo Trousers: Functional and fashionable, these trousers feature roomy pockets and a relaxed fit, ideal for both errands and adventure.

How to Style Gorpcore

The beauty of Gorpcore lies in its versatility. Pair a fleece jacket with tailored trousers for a high-low mix, or style cargo trousers with sleek trainers for an effortlessly cool vibe. Accessories like beanies, backpacks, and hiking boots add authenticity without overpowering the look. As the trend continues to evolve, expect to see more collaborations between outdoor brands and luxury labels, merging technical innovation with high fashion.

MONOCHROME MAGIC: EMBRACING SINGLE-HUE OUTFITS

ONE COLOUR, INFINITE POSSIBILITIES: THE MONOCHROME TREND IS DOMINATING WINTER 2024 WITH ITS BOLD SIMPLICITY.

In a fashion landscape often defined by intricate prints and daring contrasts, the monochrome trend offers a refreshing reprieve. This Winter 2024, single-colour dressing has emerged as a statement of both sophistication and confidence. Designers from New York to Milan are leaning into the allure of one-hue ensembles, proving that simplicity can be just as impactful as complexity.

The Runway’s Love Affair with Monochrome

Monochrome dominated the Winter 2024 runways, with notable collections from Jil Sander, Max Mara, and Balenciaga. At Jil Sander, pure white suiting paired with crisp accessories created a vision of modern minimalism, while Max Mara’s tonal camel coats and knit sets embodied timeless elegance. Balenciaga, ever the provocateur, turned monochrome into a study of drama with all-black leather looks that oozed edginess. Fashion stylist Eva Chen captures the appeal: “Monochrome is a power move. It simplifies while amplifying. When done right, it’s unforgettable.”

Why Monochrome Works

The beauty of monochrome lies in its versatility and impact. Wearing a single colour head-to-toe elongates the silhouette, creating a sleek and cohesive look. It’s also a blank canvas for showcasing texture, structure, and detail. A wool coat paired with a silk dress in the same shade, for instance, allows each piece to shine without competing.

For men, this trend translates seamlessly into tonal tailoring—think slate grey suits layered with charcoal turtlenecks—or all-black ensembles accentuated with statement shoes. For women, monochrome offers endless possibilities, from pastel power suits to jewel-toned dresses that dazzle on a winter’s night.

Styling Monochrome: Tips and Tricks

To master monochrome, start with a colour that resonates with your personal style. Neutrals like black, white, and beige are timeless and easy to pull off, while bold hues such as cobalt blue or deep green make a striking impact.

Texture is Key: Mixing materials—like pairing a cashmere sweater with leather trousers—adds depth to a monochrome outfit.

Play with Shades: For a softer approach, explore gradients within the same colour family, such as pairing light grey with charcoal.

Accessorise Wisely: Minimalism is the ethos of this trend, so opt for understated jewellery and shoes that complement, rather than compete, with the ensemble.

The Future of Monochrome

As we move into 2025, monochrome dressing is poised to evolve, embracing softer pastels and unexpected fabrics like sequins and faux fur. It’s a trend that speaks to the moment—where clarity, focus, and impact are prized in equal measure.

FRINGE REVIVAL: MODERNISING BOHO CHIC

FROM THE RUNWAY TO REAL LIFE, FRINGE IS BACK WITH A CONTEMPORARY TWIST.

Fringe is having a major moment this Spring 2025. Once synonymous with bohemian festivals and western-inspired fashion, fringe has been reimagined by designers as a sleek, versatile detail that’s far more refined than its free-spirited roots. On runways from Paris to Milan, fringe is making bold statements across eveningwear, outerwear, and accessories, offering a fresh way to add movement and texture to modern wardrobes. “Fringe is all about energy,” says fashion editor Grace Edwards. “It adds flair to even the simplest silhouettes, and this season it feels more polished and wearable than ever.”

Fringe on the Runway

This season’s runways were filled with dramatic displays of fringe, each designer offering their own interpretation. At Chloé, Gabriela Hearst embraced flowing fringe on maxi dresses and capes, with the long strands creating a hypnotic swish as models walked. Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli introduced fringe into tailored blazers, floor-length coats, and metallic evening gowns, elevating it to red-carpet status. Proenza Schouler opted for a minimalist take, using fringe to accent asymmetrical hemlines and structured outerwear. Meanwhile, Dries Van Noten added a touch of fringe to menswear, with suede jackets and scarves nodding to the trend in a subtler, utilitarian way. “Fringe this season isn’t just about boho chic,” notes stylist Emma Lawson. “It’s about creating movement and contrast, whether it’s on a sleek gown or a casual jacket.”

Why Fringe is Back

Fringe speaks to a growing demand for clothing that feels tactile and dynamic. In an era of clean lines and minimalist cuts, fringe offers a sense of playfulness and artistry, making pieces feel less static and more alive. The trend also reflects a deeper appreciation for craftsmanship. Whether it’s handwoven fringe on a luxury dress or carefully placed accents on a jacket, fringe showcases attention to detail in a way that resonates with consumers looking for uniqueness.

Incorporating Fringe into Everyday Wear

For those hesitant to embrace fringe head-on, starting small is key. Accessories like fringed bags, boots, or scarves add a subtle touch of texture without overwhelming an outfit. Pairing a fringed clutch with a monochrome look, for instance, can elevate the ensemble with minimal effort. For more adventurous dressers, statement pieces like a fringed jacket or skirt can make a striking impression. Team a fringed suede jacket with denim and ankle boots for a casual-chic vibe, or opt for a leather fringed skirt paired with a sleek blouse for a night out. Fringe dresses are another versatile option, with styles ranging from playful cocktail dresses to sophisticated gowns. Metallic fringed pieces, as seen at Alberta Ferretti, are perfect for eveningwear, while lightweight, neutral-toned dresses work well for daytime occasions.

Unexpected Twists

What sets Spring 2025 fringe apart is its pairing with unconventional materials. Designers are experimenting with leather, metallics, and knits, creating unexpected combinations that feel fresh and modern. Bottega Veneta’s fringed leather skirts and Chloé’s metallic fringe capes exemplify how this trend can seamlessly shift from casual wear to high fashion.

A Trend for All Seasons

Although fringe is a focal point for Spring 2025, it transitions effortlessly across seasons. In colder months, look for fringed outerwear and wool shawls, while summer lends itself to fringed sandals, cover-ups, and lightweight tops. Its year-round versatility ensures that this trend has staying power.

Movement and Modernity

Fringe is back in full swing, proving it can be elegant, daring, and endlessly versatile. This season, it’s more than just a nod to bohemian style—it’s a symbol of modernity and craftsmanship. As Edwards sums it up, “Fringe brings clothes to life. It’s impossible not to feel fabulous when you wear it.”

This screen-based design allows for live viewing, high-definition image capture, and seamless sharing, making astronomy more inclusive than ever before. “The Origin takes the complexity out of stargazing,” says Dr. Angela Brooks, an astrophysicist and advocate for STEM education. “It’s perfect for anyone curious about space, from families exploring the stars together to classrooms bringing science lessons to life.”

Advanced Optics for a Stunning Experience

THE AZORES: EUROPE’S HIDDEN ECO-PARADISE

AN ATLANTIC ARCHIPELAGO WHERE SUSTAINABILITY AND NATURAL SPLENDOUR THRIVE IN HARMONY.

The Azores, a cluster of nine volcanic islands adrift in the North Atlantic Ocean, feel like a world apart. Often overshadowed by the mainland allure of Portugal, this breathtaking archipelago offers something its urban counterparts cannot: a profound connection to nature. With emerald-green cliffs plunging into azure waters, steaming hot springs nestled in dense forests, and a rhythm of life dictated by the tides, the Azores are the definition of untamed beauty. But the Azores are not just a sanctuary for travellers seeking tranquillity. They are also a global model for sustainable tourism and environmental conservation. Recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark, the Azores have embraced renewable energy, marine conservation, and eco-tourism to balance the growing demand for its pristine landscapes with the need to preserve them. In a world grappling with climate change, the Azores are proving that it is possible to welcome visitors without compromising the environment.

Nature’s Masterpiece

Each of the nine islands in the Azores has its own personality, but all share an unparalleled sense of natural wonder. São Miguel, the largest and most visited island, is home to the Sete Cidades crater lakes—twin bodies of water, one blue and the other green, surrounded by lush hills that seem pulled from a storybook. Legend has it that the lakes were formed from the tears of a princess and a shepherd who fell in love but were forbidden to be together. Pico Island, meanwhile, is dominated by its namesake, Mount Pico, Portugal’s highest peak. This dormant volcano offers adventurous travellers a challenging climb, with panoramic views of the Atlantic waiting at the summit. On Faial, the Capelinhos Volcano serves as a stark reminder of the Azores’ volcanic origins. Its lunar-like landscape, created during an eruption in the 1950s, contrasts sharply with the verdant pastures that surround it. Beyond the dramatic landforms, the Azores are a haven for biodiversity. The islands’ temperate climate and isolation have allowed unique flora and fauna to flourish. The laurel forests of Terceira Island, for instance, are a remnant of the ancient forests that once covered much of Europe, now home to species found nowhere else on Earth.

A Sustainable Vision

The Azores have long been ahead of the curve when it comes to sustainability. With limited natural resources and a deep reliance on the surrounding ocean, the islands’ residents understand the importance of living in harmony with their environment. Renewable energy plays a crucial role in the Azores’ sustainability efforts. Geothermal power, harnessed from the islands’ volcanic activity, provides a significant portion of their electricity. Wind and solar energy further reduce reliance on fossil fuels, making the Azores a pioneer in green energy production. Tourism, too, has been carefully managed to minimise its impact. Unlike many popular destinations that have suffered from over-tourism, the Azores have adopted strict guidelines to protect their natural and cultural heritage. For example, visitor numbers to sensitive areas like the Caldeira Velha hot springs are regulated, and eco-certification is required for businesses operating within protected zones. “It’s about finding balance,” says a local conservationist. “We want people to experience the beauty of the Azores, but we also want to ensure that beauty lasts for generations to come.”

Marine Conservation: Protecting the Atlantic’s Giants

The waters surrounding the Azores are teeming with life. From dolphins and sea turtles to majestic sperm whales, the archipelago is one of the best places in the world for marine wildlife encounters. Whale watching, a cornerstone of Azorean tourism, is conducted with strict ecological guidelines to ensure minimal disturbance to these magnificent creatures.

In addition to its marine biodiversity, the Azores have established several marine protected areas (MPAs) to safeguard their delicate ecosystems. These zones prohibit activities like industrial fishing and seabed mining, allowing coral reefs and fish populations to recover. The Blue Azores programme, a collaboration between local authorities and international conservation organisations, aims to protect 30% of the region’s marine waters by 2030. For travellers, this commitment to conservation translates into unforgettable experiences. Whether snorkelling with schools of colourful fish, kayaking along volcanic coastlines, or diving to explore shipwrecks and underwater caves, the Azores offer a rare opportunity to connect with the ocean’s wonders in a sustainable way.

Eco-Tourism Done Right

The Azores’ approach to tourism is as refreshing as the islands themselves. Eco-lodges, like the Furnas Boutique Hotel on São Miguel, seamlessly integrate with their surroundings while offering modern comforts. These accommodations often source ingredients locally, serve traditional dishes with a sustainable twist, and encourage guests to explore the islands through environmentally friendly activities.Hiking is one of the best ways to experience the Azores’ natural beauty. Trails range from easy coastal walks to challenging ascents of volcanic peaks, with options for every level of adventurer. The Serra do Topo trail on São Jorge Island, for example, takes hikers through dramatic cliffs and valleys to the Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, a secluded lagoon famous for its natural clam beds. Farm-to-table dining is another highlight of Azorean travel. Freshly caught seafood, tangy São Jorge cheese, and tender beef raised on the islands’ sprawling pastures are staples of the local cuisine. Don’t miss the cozido das Furnas, a traditional stew cooked underground using geothermal heat—a delicious reminder of the islands’ volcanic origins.

Cultural Connections

The Azores are not just a natural paradise; they are also a window into a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. Festivals, such as the Holy Spirit celebrations, bring communities together to honour their heritage through music, dance, and shared meals. These events offer visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the islands’ traditions and forge meaningful connections with their hosts. Handicrafts are another important part of Azorean culture. From intricate lacework to pottery and basket weaving, these time-honoured crafts reflect the resourcefulness and creativity of the islands’ people. Visiting local workshops provides insight into the artistry that has been passed down through generations.

A Blueprint for the Future

As climate change and over-tourism threaten many of the world’s most beautiful places, the Azores stand out as a beacon of hope. By prioritising sustainability, the islands have proven that economic growth and environmental preservation are not mutually exclusive. Their model of carefully managed tourism, renewable energy, and marine conservation offers valuable lessons for destinations around the globe. For travellers, the Azores are more than just a getaway—they are a call to action. To visit this extraordinary archipelago is to witness firsthand the possibilities of a sustainable future. It’s a chance to experience the natural world at its most pristine and to support a community that is working tirelessly to protect it. As you stand on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic, with the sound of waves crashing below and the scent of wildflowers in the air, it’s impossible not to feel inspired. The Azores remind us of the beauty that still exists in the world—and the responsibility we all share to preserve it.

SATELLITE IMAGERY: A NEW TOOL FOR CONSERVATION

HIGH-TECH VISUALS ARE HELPING US PROTECT THE PLANET, ONE ECOSYSTEM AT A TIME.

In the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss, technology has become a powerful ally. Initiatives like Planet Labs’ Project Centinela are leveraging satellite imagery to monitor and protect the Earth’s most vulnerable ecosystems. By providing high-resolution visuals of biodiversity hotspots, this cutting-edge technology is empowering conservationists with the data they need to take action.

How It Works

Project Centinela uses satellite images to track changes in landscapes over time, identifying deforestation, habitat destruction, and other environmental threats. These images are updated frequently, offering a real-time view of ecological changes that would otherwise go unnoticed. “Satellite imagery is transforming how we approach conservation,” says Dr. Maria Gonzalez, a leading ecologist. “It allows us to detect problems early and plan more effective interventions.”

Impact on Conservation Efforts

From the Amazon rainforest to coral reefs, satellite imagery has proven invaluable in preserving biodiversity. By pinpointing areas of concern, conservationists can allocate resources more efficiently and advocate for stronger environmental protections. With projects like Centinela, the future of conservation looks brighter. By blending technology with advocacy, these initiatives are ensuring that the planet’s natural wonders remain protected for generations to come.
