Letter from the President and Board Chair Dear Friends and Supporters of GLFHC: It is our pleasure to present to you the Fiscal Year 2019 Annual Report for Greater Lawrence Family Health Center. This report provides information and highlights from another successful year at the health center, in its continued delivery of high quality primary health care to residents in Lawrence and throughout the Merrimack Valley. As you will see, we continue to create opportunities for expanding patient access and working with our local partners to achieve our collective mission focused on a healthier community. Greater Lawrence Family Health Center continues to pride itself as the second largest community health center in the Commonwealth, with more than 62,000 patients and 262,000 patient visits annually. The health center is known throughout the country as being among the nation’s best, thanks to our award-winning patient care and our nationally recognized Pharmacy and Lawrence Family Medicine Residency programs. Throughout this report you will read more about the highlights from the last year, as well as some of the great work being done by our staff and clinicians. We employ the best and the brightest in health care – from our front line staff to our award-winning clinicians, strong management team and volunteer leadership, we are proud to be considered amongst the Commonwealth’s upper echelon of health care leaders and providers to those most in need.

Changing the Lawrence Family Medicine Residency has a Tremendous Impact on Sports Medicine in the Merrimack Valley
D
id you realize that if you are watching a football or ice hockey game in the Merrimack Valley this year, chances are that a Greater Lawrence Family Health Center resident is serving as the home site team physician?

For the past six years, in fact, Lawrence Family Medical Residency doctors have served as team physicians at Lawrence High School, Methuen High School, Haverhill High School and Greater Lawrence Technical School, supporting the Certified Athletic Trainers (ATCs) and their staff in the diagnosis and management of injuries that occur at home hockey and/or football games. Common conditions seen by our physicians include pain or dysfunction in the neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand, back, hip, knee, leg, ankle and foot, and given the nature of the sports involved, emergency and high-risk scenarios often do occur. While we do not administer concussion baseline testing, we do consult with ATCs and players if

there are concerns regarding an athlete’s pre-season test or post injury examination. Our residents also provide guidance to ATCs, athletes, and families regarding the care of an injured athlete after the competition (i.e. need to go to the emergency room, get imaging, follow up with primary care physicians, etc.). In addition, pre-participation physicals are conveniently offered at Greater Lawrence Technical School and Lawrence High School at the school-based health centers (SBHCs). So what are the best parts of our relationship with the schools? “Working in partnership with the schools in our community has been a wonderful service to provide,” says Head of Sports Medicine and MIAA Medical Board Member Warren

Bodine, DO, FAOASM. “Being able to practice medicine outside of the clinic walls is incredibly rewarding, and it is a testament to the dedication of our organization of meeting our patients where they are.” Sideline medical coverage and our presence at the SBHCs is a valuable and necessary part of training our family medicine residents as well-rounded physicians, capable of successfully treating patients in a diverse range of treatment scenarios. The Primary Care Sports Medicine Service at GLFHC is comprised of a group of physicians fellowship-trained in sports medicine who practice nonsurgical, musculoskeletal care. Our team regularly helps patients through the often challenging process of determining whether their conditions require surgery or
can be managed by other types of treatment. Any patient with a musculoskeletal injury or sports-related illness is welcome. From young children to active retirees, our specialists treat a variety of musculoskeletal ailments including strains, sprains, tendinitis, fractures, sports concussions, and arthritis, as well as medical problems unique to the female athlete. Our goal is to work in partnership with a patient’s primary care team to allow for safe return to school, work and sport. ince 1994, the Lawrence Family Medicine Residency (LFMR) has filled the ever-present need for doctors trained in the Community Health model, imbuing them with a skill set inclusive of everything required to care for the underserved. Why do most of our residents choose to come to LFMR? “First and foremost, it’s our mission,” says Wendy Barr, MD, MPH, MSCE, VP, Clinical Education & Director of the LFMR Program (and proud LFMR alumna). “Simply stated, we are committed to: providing culturally sensitive patient care, superb medical education and an environment that is compassionate, understanding and open to continuous improvement.”

The national average of residents who remain in community health is 9%. Lawrence Family Medicine Residency, however, boasts an incredible 55%. “Our residents come to Lawrence and fall in love – with the work, with the community, with the mission … and many of them stay here at GLFHC,” says Kelley. “The simple fact that so many of our residents remain committed to the LFMR mission of providing an exceptional level of care to the most underserved communities in our country and beyond is nothing short of incredible.” What are the biggest challenges facing LFMR? “Space, resources, funding,” answers Barr. In the 25 years since it was founded, the residency program has grown exponentially – and it

As the program’s capacity has increased, it has become increasingly clear that it needs a dedicated space that reflects its growth and mission. To address this, we plan to unite its operations on the third floor of our Haverhill Street site, transforming the area into a customized learning environment featuring simulation experiences, collaborative learning spaces, small classrooms, and resident
“pods” for independent work space. This expansion will keep the residents in the optimal learning environment they already use – with the highest-need patients at GLFHC’s busiest site – while unifying and affirming the future of our educational efforts. he 9th Annual In Pink Brunch & Comedy Show was host to a sellout crowd of 500 guests listening to renowned stress coach and motivational speaker Loretta LaRoche. Loretta’s words of wisdom included to slow down, life is short, and wear your party pants! We also honored June Black with the 2018 Rosalyn Kempton Wood Award. June served as District Director for Congresswoman Niki Tsongas prior to her retirement. June is a two-time breast cancer survivor and shared her experience of her road back to good health. In Pink raised more than $94,000 in support of GLFHC’s women’s health care programs.

Making a Difference Gala

ur 14th Annual Making a Difference Gala honored the Essex County Community Foundation (ECCF) with the Making a Difference Award. ECCF worked tirelessly to help the victims of the September 2018 gas explosions. The foundation set up special funds to accept donations, and then distributed that money to the families most impacted by the disaster. Beth Francis, President & CEO, accepted the award on behalf of ECCF. Bob Rivers, Chairman & CEO of Eastern Bank, was the featured speaker. The Making a Difference Gala has continued to grow each year, filling the room with supporters and raising more than $200,000 to help support GLFHC and its programs. Our Mission The mission of Greater Lawrence Family Health Center is to improve and maintain the health of individuals and families in the Merrimack Valley by providing a network of high quality, comprehensive health care services and by training health care professionals to respond to the needs of a culturally diverse population. Our patients have known us as “Your Home for Health in the Merrimack Valley” for 40 years, and for good reason. Greater Lawrence Family Health Center prides itself on helping more than 62,000 people in the Lawrence, MA area get the care they need – the majority of whom are federally designated as a medically underserved population. The health center designs programs and services to address emerging health issues in our community, and expands access for patients by opening new sites, adding exam rooms, and training culturally competent clinicians and health professionals.

Excellence in Practice Throughout the 2018-2019 Fiscal Year, many Greater Lawrence Family Health Center staff members were recognized by community organizations for their outstanding contributions. Tina Starner, Pharmacy Regulatory Specialist, was named Pharmacy Technician of the Year by the Massachusetts Pharmacists Association (MPhA). Tina has been with the health center since 2012 and has more than 20 years of retail pharmacy experience. She was presented with the award at the Installation and Awards Banquet at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut during the New England Pharmacists Convention. YWCA Northeastern Massachusetts selected Ann Marie Borgesi, Senior Vice President, Chief Administrative & Human Resources Officer, as a Tribute to Women Award recipient. Borgesi’s nomination noted that “her focus is always on the people, making it her priority to mentor, encourage, and acknowledge the contributions of others.” 16

Katrin Schneck, MD, was recognized by the Rotary Club of Andover with the Citizens Who Care Award. Through the Reach Out and Read program she facilitates at GLFHC’s North Site, she encourages children throughout Greater Lawrence to learn the importance of reading.
John M. Silva, President & CEO, received two distinguished honors. He was named the Region 1 Representative to the National Association of Community Health Centers Board of Directors. He was also recognized by George Washington University as its Distinguished Visitor for the 2019 Geiger Gibson Program in Community Health Policy. Silva had the opportunity to share his leadership and experience over the past four decades in the health center movement with the students and faculty.
Legislative Affairs Each year Greater Lawrence Family Health Center works closely with our local, state, and federal delegations to further the mission of the health center and its programs, as well as the Lawrence Family Medicine Residency program. Senior management, along with clinicians, residents, staff and board members are all engaged in advocacy efforts.
Preparing for the Future
GLFHC is a recognized leader throughout the country and often sought after to assist with these advocacy efforts throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and in Washington, D.C.

For many of our employees, taking care of patients extends beyond their appointments. The Access to Care fund was created by GLFHC staff to support patients who need help paying for items and services not covered by insurance.

We had a patient in Resident Clinic with an extensive medical history who had just moved from another state and had run out of most of her medications (including expensive immune suppressants for kidney transplants). The patient had no insurance. Staff jumped right in to coordinate getting medications from the Access to Care fund (as well as coordinating durable supplies from Conlin’s Pharmacy) so that the patient could get back on her medications immediately. What seemed to be almost an insurmountable problem when the patient walked in was taken care of immediately. A physician and a community health worker at our North Site,150 Park St., Lawrence, teamed up to help a family with an emergency medical transport situation. The patient’s family was eligible for the state’s medical transportation service, but this was an urgent (next day) appointment, and there was not enough time to call and reserve a transport. A premature baby was bleeding from his G-tube, and needed to get to Tufts Medical Center for a follow-up appointment. The family had no available means for transportation. GLFHC staff were able to arrange transportation through the Access to Care fund, due to the patient’s critical need to see the physician in Boston the next day. Without the Access to Care fund, this transport would not have been possible.

When House Of Mercy in Lawrence, MA put out the call for backpacks, the GLFHC Mobile Health Unit was able to answer thanks to the Cummings Foundation $100K for 100 grant. Our Mobile Health Unit partners with House of Mercy to deliver health care to the homeless, who were in need of backpacks to hold their belongings. This grant helped us provide waterproof backpacks to 60 people in need. We are grateful for such generous and thoughtful partners as the Cummings Foundation.
