Farewell Message from the President & CEO Dear Friends and Supporters of GLFHC: This will be my last Annual Report as the CEO of GLFHC. It has been an extremely busy 65 months since I arrived at this wonderful organization. We have expanded our Family Residency Program to four years and 41 residents, opened a new health center in Methuen, as well as expanded our Behavioral Health staff and services extensively. GLFHC purchased our Mobile Health Center van focused on expanding services to the John M. Silva homeless community. We have used that van and added a secPresident & CEO ond unit during the COVID pandemic to conduct testing and vaccination activities. The health center has led the way on OBAT utilization and SUD service expansion, opened a new health center in Haverhill and began the upgrade of our 34 Haverhill Street Health Center. The spirit, passion and commitment of our staff and Board has truly been magnificent. GLFHC is in a good place financially, especially during this pandemic. Our staff have been true heroes over the last 14 months, continuing to provide health care access, outreach and education, telehealth appointments, and pharmacy services including home delivery and curbside pickup. We are continuing to grow our patient base and increase total visits each year as demand increases. Together, with Lawrence General Hospital, we have developed an Accountable Care Organization (ACO) in “My Care Family,” and have 34,000 local residents enrolled in this managed care plan. It has been a whirlwind of activity that continues to grow. I am proud of my team. GLFHC and the Lawrence Family Medicine Residency (LFMR) represent the best in community based primary care and the national model for true community based residency training. I will miss this incredible city and region and believe that GLFHC will continue to lead the way on improving health outcomes and elimination health disparities in the Valley. The future is bright. It has been an honor.

The Story of a

t was near the end of 2019 when Lance Braye, MD, first heard about a “mysterious respiratory illness,” spreading throughout Wuhan, China.

This included tracking down and ordering enough personal protective equipment (PPE) for all patient-facing staff, as well as installing plastic guards between seats in all waiting rooms and additional plastic protectors in pharmacy windows. A virus killer air cleaning system was installed in two Lawrence locations – the Main Site on Haverhill Street and North Site on Park Street. Called the Virus Killer 401 (VK401), it is not just an air purifier, but an air cleaner, which kills all airborne pollutants in a room by funneling them through multiple chambers, filters and UV processes. This is in addition to gathering all the technological equipment and software needed to implement one of the most important safety measures – virtual doctor’s visits, known as telehealth.

“We implemented telehealth seemingly overnight,” John M. Silva, GLFHC’s President & CEO, said. “The staff did the near-impossible job of setting up everything that needed to be set up so we could expand telehealth.”
It also really helped to decrease the spread of COVID, as doctors could check-in with patients and get their medical issue addressed without needing an in-person visit.
The clinics converted to all telehealth visits, except for the very urgent cases that needed to be seen in person, said Zandra Kelley, MD, GLFHC’s Chief Medical Officer. This has been truly revolutionary for patient care, as many of GLFHC’s patients have issues with transportation and taking time off from work.
At the height of the pandemic in the spring – and now again this winter – GLFHC has not only remained open, but taken on new patients, as many primary care facilities are not able to. For months, GLFHC has been operating at more than 100% capacity, with clinicians and frontline staff taking countless overtime shifts to help patients.
“It really opened the door to allowing us to have a chance to get in touch with our patients when otherwise it might have been difficult,” Kelley said. “I’ve been able to talk to people when

daily deliveries, said Diane Martin, RPh, Senior Vice President of Chief Pharmacy Services. Deliveries have gone from 3,000 a month to more than 11,000. “Two of our lead pharmacy technicians volunteered to help deliver prescriptions seven days a week,” Martin said.
Coping with Burnout As the pandemic continued into a second surge, the stress of caring for very ill patients and the worry about contracting COVID had taken its toll on the staff. In the pharmacies, staff worked tirelessly to fill prescriptions and restock supplies overnight to prepare for the next day. Pharmacists also had to be very careful and adhere to strict continued on page 8 2020 GLFHC ANNUAL REPORT

continued from page 7 COVID safety protocols due to the numbers of patients with COVID coming in needing prescriptions. “It was extremely stressful on our staff as we frequently dealt with COVID, plus patients coming in to the pharmacies,” Martin said. “Patients would hand the prescription (piece of paper) to the pharmacy technician and it wasn’t until after we processed it that they disclosed they had COVID.” At our clinical sites, the majority of patients coming in every day were showing COVID symptoms. Patients have to be sent to Lawrence General Hospital (LGH) to be tested, as COVID testing was not widely available at doctor’s offices and medical facilities. During the worst of the pandemic, LGH was 80% filled with COVID positive cases – many of them GLFHC patients, and all of them being cared for by GLFHC’s physician residents, said Wendy Barr, MD, Vice President of Clinical Education and Residency. “Dealing with being a resident during COVID in a pandemic feels near impossible,” Barr said. “They’re caring for patients directly, working in the COVID unit, taking care of patients over the phone, dealing with all the unknowns, all of the personal burdens, all of the professional burdens.” The residents had to provide care to dying patients with very limited resources on floors not designated for people who were that sick.

And then I had to reassure my wife that I was keeping myself safe as much as possible.” — Lance Braye, MD “I have a lot of friends and family who have served in the military, and my experiences are probably the closest I’ve come to their experiences in a combat zone,” Braye said. “I had patients who were dying no matter what we tried. I had to watch families knowingly have their final conversations with their loved ones. And then I had to reassure my wife that I was keeping myself safe as much as possible.” He recalls a daily ritual he had, updating one patient’s sister about her brother’s progress using FaceTime. The patient appeared to be getting better, but then was no longer able to breathe on his own and needed to be on a ventilator. “It destroys you, because we’re not soldiers,” Braye said. “We signed up to heal, to help. And COVID denied us that opportunity in the beginning.” At LGH, following the safety protocols helped keep residents safe. To date, only one of our 40 physician residents has tested positive for COVID due to a work-related exposure, said Barr. At the hospitals in Boston, that rate is 50%, as reported by Boston

media outlets. To help staff cope with the stress, GLFHC has scheduled monthly virtual therapy sessions for anyone who needs help, as well as more frequent sessions especially for residents. Oneon-one help is also available to all staff
who need it. Other stress-reduction resources, such as virtual yoga and meditation classes, are scheduled, as well. Many area organizations also donated lunches, desserts and treats for all staff members to help lift their spirits and show appreciation for their dedication. GLFHC also arranged meals for staff members whenever possible. People are very scared, Kelley said, as it’s a new illness and people are getting very sick. It’s an unprecedented, extremely stressful time for most medical professionals.
A Beacon of Hope With the Food & Drug Administration just granting emergency-use approval of two COVID vaccines from international biopharmaceutical companies Pfizer and Moderna, many are hoping the pandemic will soon come to an end. “The huge benefit of these two vaccines that we have right now is that they are around 95% effective,” Kelley said. “That is really amazing for vaccines.”

The next few months should begin to ease the demand and fear that has accompanied the coronavirus on its world tour, Silva said, adding that more vaccinations, safe practices, screening and increased understanding of COVID-19 should lead to better treatments and improved outcomes worldwide. “Herd immunity and access to vaccines will hopefully turn the tide and life will return to a new normal, whatever that might be,” he said. “The lives saved and services provided in addition to consistently exceeding our projected patient visits each month is staggering and almost incomprehensible and yet we are not done.” 2020 GLFHC ANNUAL REPORT

As a teaching health center, GLFHC is especially proud of our three graduating classes of 2020. In a year of unprecedented obstacles, our graduates forged through unfamiliar territory and became the skilled and compassionate heroes our patients needed in the war against COVID-19.

he 10th Annual In Pink Brunch & Comedy Show was once again host to a sellout crowd of 500 guests listening to renowned stress coach and motivational speaker Loretta LaRoche. Loretta’s words of wisdom included to slow down, life is short, and wear your party pants! We also honored Dianne Anderson, retired President of Lawrence General Hospital, with the 2019 Rosalyn Kempton Wood Award. The award was presented to her by Claire Wilkes, daughter of the late Rosalyn Wood. The event raised more than $110,000 and set records for sponsorships and revenue, which translate into an increased capacity to provide essential, first-class women’s health programming for GLFHC patients.

Our Mission The mission of Greater Lawrence Family Health Center is to improve and maintain the health of individuals and families in the Merrimack Valley by providing a network of high quality, comprehensive health care services and by training health care professionals to respond to the needs of a culturally diverse population. Our patients have known us as “Your Home for Health in the Merrimack Valley” since 1980, and for good reason. Greater Lawrence Family Health Center prides itself on helping more than 63,000 people in the Lawrence area get the care they need – the majority of whom are federally designated as a medically underserved population. The health center designs programs and services to address emerging health issues in our community, and expands access for patients by opening new sites, adding exam rooms, and training culturally competent clinicians and health professionals.

For many of our employees, taking care of patients extends beyond their appointments. The Access to Care fund was created by GLFHC staff to support patients who need help paying for items and services not covered by insurance.
