Time for a New Adventure People choose The Glenridge for many reasons: to sustain a healthy lifestyle, form new social bonds, enjoy maintenancefree living, achieve long-term security – or all of the above. But they share one thing in common: gratitude for joining the community when they did. Members agree: When it comes to maximizing your health, happiness and growth, it’s never too soon to flourish here! Purposeful Living Neurologist Dr. Alan Grindal has been a familiar face at The Glenridge for years. As former director of the Memory Disorder Clinic at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, he gave popular presentations on brain health through the Art of Flourishing Speaker Series. Now, Alan and his wife, Beth, are making an encore – this time as members. Alan continues to teach at The Glenridge Academy, including a recent course on the Vietnam War. As a young flight surgeon, he qualified Air Force pilots to fly in the war, inspiring his interest in neurology. “The key to thriving as an older adult is having purpose,” Alan says. “We’ve found that in abundance here.”
Dr. Alan Grindal, a neurological consultant, and his wife Beth say living at The Glenridge promotes optimal brain health.
Both Alan and Beth find purpose in giving back to their community. Alan treats uninsured patients at a community clinic, while Beth has been active in the PEO Sisterhood, providing college scholarships for women in need, as well as Family Promise, which assists homeless families. “The future isn’t always predictable, but we feel confident that we’ve prepared for it,” adds Beth. “Our life here is pretty wonderful!”
A New Adventure
After a career overseeing spectacular national parks, Marie Rust embarked on “a new adventure” at The Glenridge.
As a young girl building sandcastles on New York City beaches, Marie Rust dreamed of having a job where she could explore and protect the outdoors. “I wanted to be a part of nature, a part of history,” says Marie, who began her 25-year career at the National Parks Service as a maintenance worker collecting trash from hiking trails. Not to be discouraged, she made her way up the ladder until she became the regional director, overseeing 2,100 employees at 150 iconic sites, from Maine’s Acadia National Park to

Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. “Every day, I woke up and thought, ‘I’m so lucky to have this job,’” she recalls. “The parks are quintessential America. They celebrate what makes our country remarkable and preserve our heritage for future generations.” Marie followed her spirit of adventure to The Glenridge, attracted by its proximity to nature, cultural assets and lifelong learning opportunities. A member of The Glenridge’s “green team,” she enjoys learning from environmental speakers. Marie also expands her horizons with language and technology courses at The Glenridge Academy. “I see The Glenridge as a new adventure,” she says. “Your whole life opens up here. It’s an extraordinary place!”
