Glennwood - the idea of a resort-like community for adults with disabilities arose from the dream of two families standing on the softball field with their children and wondering just what it would be like if their children could enjoy what all of us enjoy - an independent life where they could succeed in reaching their own goals and dreams.

The spark of these dreamers began many years ago now when two fathers of children with disabilities, and coaches of the Challenger League Sports, came together to create the vision of Glennwood House. Long before it had a name, or a location, or any financial support. These two dads would not take NO for an answer. Maarten Voogd and Randy Larson, their families, friends and supporters - they will always be our heroes, their years of dreaming and building our foundation is a gift beyond measure. Thanks to the vision, the unwavering commitment, and the excitement for the future, the Larson and Voogd families never stopped believing in the possibility of a “Glennwood”.

Tonight, as we celebrate with you, at the 8th Annual Gala, Glennwood House of Laguna Beach is a thriving non-profit community of diverse women and men who have developed friendships both at Glennwood and in the local community, and continue to expand their self-confidence and share their many talents with all of us.

These compassionate adults have extended their reach through their joy and willingness to play an important role in the life around them with the creation of their very own outreach program, G-Force - Glennwood A Force For Good. From the growth of Glennwood, the Residents formed an idea, and giving back to the community around Glennwood has been a project of joy and accomplishment. The G-Force team spends time assisting other non-profits and community causes, leaving yet another footprint for us all to follow!

As we continue to enhance our facility, through the generosity of our donors, and add to our recreational health and wellness programs, we look to the future with excitement and enthusiasm for the next phase of our evolution as a beacon for innovative approaches to providing independence, wellness and choice for adults with special needs.

Glennwood would not be possible without your loving support. Our community of partners ensures the continued success of Glennwood House of Laguna Beach.

On behalf of the Glennwood Board of Directors, I would like to welcome you to our 2021 Gala.

The last 18 months have without a doubt been the most challenging in our 8 year history. Our staff and residents have shown extraordinary resilience each and every day operating as an “island in the storm”.

Early on, each person made a commitment to take care of each other and to do their part to wear masks, wash hands, endure constant testing and monitoring and to keep positive throughout. Glennwood is indeed a very special place worthy of celebration!

We look ahead to the coming years with the knowledge that our organization has shown itself more than capable of handling all kinds of challenges. And as an organization, we share the excitement and anticipation of further developing the Glennwood model for the future.

March 2020 - as the world almost stood still in the wake of the pandemic - Teams of heroes rose up all over the world to save lives.

In February of 2021 one of those teams of Superheroes from Providence Mission Hospital arrived on the doorstep of Glennwood House. They were disguised as nurses, and medical technicians - but we could see these masked crusaders were the hope we had been hoping and praying for - the path to the COVID 19 vaccine. We finally could take our first steps back to living out our great big adventures in the world again.

The Glennwood Family would like to thank everyone at Providence Mission Hospital for your dedication and compassion. We are humbled and honored by your commitment to save lives and bring hope to so many in our community. We are forever grateful!

Well tonight is finally here!

All the tuxes fitted, the dresses chosen for Prom, and a million tiny little details like menus, props, music and more have been carefully curated for this magical evening to celebrate Glennwood House.

I can’t tell you how excited and grateful we all are to celebrate in person once again! We had a fun time last year coming into your homes for our virtual Gala at Zombie Prom - but at the end of the day we are in the business of PEOPLE - and we have missed ALL of you! For the last 18 months we have lived out our great big Glennwood lives through mountains of protective gear and very controlled health and safety protocols. So because of all of our efforts and compliance we have the AWESOME opportunity to be here and have all of our Glennwood Friends here - live and in person - just exactly the way we like it BEST! I wanted to take a moment to say THANK YOU - to our Families, our Staff, our Residents, to everyone who helped to keep us safe at Glennwood during this COVID19 challenge. There is really nothing that could have prepared any of us for a pandemic - and yet… in a lot of ways we were prepared. We were prepared because we have built a community of people who care deeply about others and while none of us wanted to wear masks (and shields!), we did wear them because it kept our friends safe and healthy. We were prepared because we think on our feet, we lead and don’t wait for others to show us what to do, and we make decisions together and face challenges head-on and never, ever forget that our outlook helps to determine our ultimate outcome.

If you will all indulge me just this small space in the scope of tonight’s magic - to share one more very special thank you. Many of you may know that my parents passed away in January and June of 2019. John and Christina Manners were together for 70 plus years, left the UK to find their dreams in America, had 3 children, and both made it to over 90 years old. My parents taught me maybe MOST of the lessons I needed to be at Glennwood every day. They showed me that love is the strongest force of all, the certainty that God calls us all to serve others, that patience isn’t what the Manners are best at, but that we can find ways to be better at it, that we don’t always have all the answers, but we need to all lead with conviction and kindness - both are critical. They gave me my faith, my education, and then supported my creativity, my determination and ultimately my passion to be a life-long advocate. I honor my family when I show my love and dedication for your family, maybe that’s the best tribute of all to John & Christina Manners.

As we celebrate tonight with our beautiful Glennwood Family - I think of my parents, and my brothers, and that my birth family has surely prepared me to help lead the Glennwood Family. I wish my parents were here tonight with all of the other parents, but they are most definitely watching from heaven and loving every minute of this celebration. My parents had a lot of great parties with family and friends - so cue the lights and the music - let’s get this party started!

Finally, we get to be together!

We are all absolutely ecstatic to convene on this wonderful night to celebrate Glennwood. Glennwood has been tested with a year in which we all can agree upon was challenging and foreboding for many of our residents. The end result, rewarded us wholly, triggering everyone to become even stronger as a community.

From the endless hours sanitizing, temp checks, social distancing and brainstorming of new and innovative activities, we found success lending to a positive outcome during the apex of the pandemic. We enjoyed several parties and outings while singing the nights away on Karaoke. We appreciate all of your support and gifts during these months of unknown surprises.

I am so blessed to call Glennwood my second home for 8 years. The residents make each year delightful, while I get more insight into their lifetime goals. I’m lucky I get to spend my days with your loved ones. Thank you for joining us in celebrating a night under The Big Top. Your continued love and support while attending this event helps create the unforgettable memories, milestones and excitement in the coming years.
