Roseangle Elderly Wellbeing Centre Westfield Lane Dundee, Scotland Glenn Mckerracher

Dundee The Westfield Lane site is located in the West End of Dundee, slightly out of the city centre and within a short walk to the River Tay which lines the south of the city. The areas around the site are predominantly residential however it does feature a juxtaposition from the old industrial

buildings littered around the area. The industry that took place in the area has long gone and few reminders of Dundees past remain when you take a closer look. The site itself used to be dominated by the Tay rope works however has now made way to a large green space which is very rarely in use.

Forming an Entrance Afternoon Winter

The main entrance of the scheme is located on the south facade and makes use of three large windows to maximise south light into the cafe space to create a warm atmosphere. Developing the materiality of the facade is essential to forming an entrance. A change in material from the kolumba brick that wraps the rest of the facade is exchanged for concrete walls to highlight the entrance space with recessed sin-age forming shadows. A soldier course of brick also continues around the building as a datum line further highlighting this entrance.

Nature at Heart Afternoon Summer Solstice

Nature runs throughout the heart of this project, by enhancing the existing green space on the site a welcoming garden for contemplation has been created. Circulation runs along the courtyard with multiple openings for vistas into the activity within. All of which can be opened to maximise natural ventilation. The language of the columns is translated into the paving and further still into the flower beds .

Journey Down Westf, ield Lane Night Summer

Westfield Lane carves the eastern boundary of the site, maintaining this element is crucial to the scheme. Elements of seating are placed along the sports hall wall to provided places of rest for members of the public. This encourages the public to interact with the users within the sports hall. All other windows are placed out of eye level to give privacy to the spaces. The lane is lit by a variety of methods including hanging lights which aim to create a friendly yet intimate atmosphere at night.

Integrating function with structure

The windows along the circulation core serve many functions. The first of these is a place of informal seating. Allowing visitors to the building to pause for a chat and breaking up the length of the corridor. Another of these functions is heating. Heaters placed bellow the seating allow the corridor space to be warmed then hot air let out by windows which can be opened by hand.

The natural light that these windows also allow into the building is invaluable. Allowing sunlight to stream into the corridor and casting shadows within heighten the experience.

A Place to Consult Morning Summer

The consoltation rooms adjacent to the library space serve as a quiet warm space for private conversations, this is the most intimate space within the building. Timber walls adds to the warmth within the space making it less sterile. In addition to this, filling the room with random objects creates a more home like feel in the space. The oriel windows serve as seats to spend time watching the passerby wander down Westfield Lane. The also allow natural light to flood into the space and can be opened for ventilation too.

Keep Active Morning Summer

The Sports Hall space encourages users to keep active. The skylight provides a natural source of light whilst being tilted to the north to allow for less direct sunlight to get into the space and blind those playing sport inside. Windows facing onto Westfield Lane encourage the public to watch people enjoying themselves within. The shadow gaps maintain the line taken from the window frame to create harmony around the space entirely.

The Community Hub Mid Day Summer Solstice

The cafe space welcomes users into the building by being the first point of contact that visitors have upon entering the building. The skylight is tilted to the south to allow sunlight to fill the space and warm the timber within. The steel plate followed by ninety degree rotation of wood flooring higlights the circulation space that links the cafe to the rest of the building. A shadow gap running around the top of the timber walls mimics the datum on the exterior of the building. The mezzanine level of the cafe allows the space to feel open and free.
