Martin qualified as a Chartered Management Accountant

After leaving Sherborne, Simon studied English at Trinity

with the BBC. He then joined Allied Domecq, eventually becoming the Chief Accountant of their largest operating division six years later. In 1990 he joined, as Finance Director, a little known company with a handful of pubs called J D Wetherspoon, taking it from an underfunded private company to a FT250 plc. Thirteen years ago he joined Hall & Woodhouse Ltd, the Dorset regional brewer, as Group Finance Director, taking on additional responsibility for all commercial aspects in 2013. He is also Non-Executive Chairman of Charles Trent Ltd, a national recycling company, Motowise Ltd, an IT start up business, and a Non-Executive Director of Telesoft, a communications security company.

College, Cambridge. On graduating he secured a graduate trainee position at Davidson Pearce, and went on to work at a number of agencies large and small, including WCRS, Mellors Reay and McCann-Erickson. After 10 years he switched from account handling to become a copywriter. So he is uniquely qualified to see the advertising business from both sides of the fence, as both poacher and gamekeeper. For the last ten years he has been running his own agency, King & Tuke, in Clerkenwell.

Mr W. H. Eaton (OS) (d) (2009-2014) ACCOUNTANCY Having left Sherborne in 2014, Will started the Deloitte Scholar Scheme – a scheme designed for gap year students to gain 7 months of hands-on experience of a variety of areas from Consulting and Tax to Audit and Corporate Finance. Will sits within the Audit Advisory department, which involves providing risk consultancy and internal audit services to clients across multiple industries, including Public Services, Energy and Resources, Telecommunications and Financial Services.

Nick is a first generation dairy farmer, running a high performing pedigree Holstein Friesian herd in partnership with his wife on a 130 acre Dorset County Council tenancy since 1995. Last May they took on a further 125 acres with new facilities being built for a herd of 180 cows. In 2003 he was runner up in the inaugural ‘Farmer of the Future’ competition.

Mr A. G. Ambrose (OS) (d) (1992-1997) ARCHITECTURE: Anton studied architecture at Nottingham University and the Bartlett School (UCL) of Architecture, where he graduated with a double distinction in design. He currently runs a rapidly expanding firm of young architects in South West London practising both in the United Kingdom and East Africa. He has lectured in design at Nottingham University and Oxford Brookes and is a regular design critic at The Bartlett School of Architecture and Westminster University.

Marja is a Senior Marine Ecologist for a large consultancy company where she undertakes a range of marine surveys around the coast of the UK and also processes biological samples in their laboratory. The team is made up of marine and freshwater scientists with specialisms including: invertebrates, marine mammals, fish and fish larvae, water quality, zooplankton, phytoplankton and seaweeds. Marja studied Marine Biology as an undergraduate student, Coastal Zone Management as a Master’s student and she spent four years researching marine animals living in the estuaries of SE England as part of her PhD. Before she worked for her current company she worked for the Environment Agency and in Greece, undertaking underwater seaweed surveys.

Arthur is the Army’s Careers Adviser for Devon and Somerset. After Sandhurst, he joined the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment (now the Rifles), and has served in a number of locations around the world. Having commanded a Company with his Regiment, he left in 2001 and became a teacher in Nottingham. He returned to the military in 2003, taking up his current post in careers and education support across the 2 counties.

Mr J.N. Brownjohn (OS) (d) (1984-1989) ART AND DESIGN Beanie is Creative Director of Makestuff Ltd, working cross-media. Projects range from model-making and set construction for television and stills photography, to promotional exhibition/events and retail displays. Recent clients include: Harvey Nichols, Fortnum & Mason, Camper, Direct Line, Brown Thomas, Ford, Nokia and Nike.

Dr E. Evesham BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE Liz has been teaching for over 30 years whilst, at the same time, pursuing her research interests. Having completed her Ph.D in Entomology, she was awarded a Royal Society Fellowship to continue her research at the Free University, Brussels. Liz attends many national and international conferences, which enables her not only to share ideas and develop new ones but also to visit new countries and counties.

AUCTIONEERING Timothy first joined an auction house in 2008 at the age of 16 and had already had rostrum and auctioneering experience by the time he was 17. He is currently an auctioneer and valuer at Duke’s Auctioneers of Dorchester and head of their Coin, Militaria and Collectables department. Timothy is also a columnist for the Antiques Trade Gazette. He was the winner of the first Antique Young Gun of the year award in 2013, and is now an Ambassador for the Antique Young Guns network.

Mr D. Urry (FAIR ONLY) BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE David studied Biological Sciences at Oxford University, where he focussed on conservation and ecology. Since leaving university he has worked for a number of conservation organisations, including GIS mapping for the Bat Conservation Trust in London and surveying Golden Jackals in Greece. He also developed an interest in science communication and worked for a short time at The Natural History Museum before joining the Society of Biology. David’s current job as Regional Coordinator involves supporting the Society’s members and branch committees around the country with events and activities, as well as helping to organise the Society’s own public engagement events. The job is very varied, with highlights including performing science songs at the Green Man Festival, interviewing David Attenborough and leading insect cooking demonstrations in Belfast!

James left Bristol University in 2006 and moved to London. He joined the graduate scheme at Savills and spent 2 years working towards his Assessment of Professional Competence (APC), working in the valuation, development, residential investment and various agency teams. Upon qualification, he joined their country department and spent 3 years there before joining Knight Frank in June 2012 to focus on the sales of prime country properties on his ‘home patch’ across Wiltshire, Dorset, Somerset, Avon and South Gloucestershire. He now works very closely with the Sherborne, Bath and Bristol offices, covering the prime country market.

CITY CAREERS: PRIVATE EQUITY/INVESTMENT RESEARCH/CURRENCY/COMMODITIES: Nick works for Redburn Partners, a leading independent stockbroking company in Europe. Nick is based in their London office. Redburn Partners offer a compelling alternative to the integrated investment banking model and their services are tailored for institutional investors to the exclusion of any other activity. Nick has been working in the City for 25 years in a number of areas of finance. He is very aware of the workings of The City, its changing nature, and the array of opportunities that are available.

Simon has over 27 years’ experience in the London and European Insurance Markets. He joined Jardine Lloyd Thompson Ltd in 1991 from Alexander Howden. His early years were spent in the casualty arena, producing and placing USA third party liability insurance programmes. In the late 1990s he was instrumental in designing and developing a computer hacker and network liability product called E-Comprehensive and, later, an identity fraud product for the US market. In 2002 he was asked to lead the Special Contingency team at JLT, where he was pivotal in building a larger book of business from a variety of international sources. Simon is a regular speaker at industry events covering technology and internet risks. He is also the occasional author of articles and white papers covering cyber risk.

Bamsey (OS) (b) (1995-2000) CITY CAREERS: INVESTMENT BANKING Following a gap year spent in Paris and 4 years at the University of Bristol, graduating with an LLB in European Legal Studies, Seb joined J P Morgan in 2006, initially as a 6-month intern. Having accepted a full-time offer, he then spent two months in New York as part of the Investment Bank’s graduate training programme. Seb now works in J P Morgan’s European Debt Capital Markets business, leading a team which provides advice to insurance companies regarding capital management from a debt financing perspective and, in particular, bond issuance in the UK, US and Continental Europe.

DIPLOMATIC SERVICE Richard entered the Foreign and Commonwealth Office via open competition (1990) and, since then, has had many varied roles, both in the UK and overseas. He took up his position as Head of Pacific Department at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in January 2013. Between 2008 and 2012 he was HM Consul General, Sydney and Director General Trade and Investment (Australasia). Previous to that he was Deputy Head of Mission and HM Consul General at the British Embassy in Mexico City (2005-2008). Before going overseas Richard was Head of Assistance Group in Consular Directorate in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (2001-2004). He has served in the British High Commissions in Barbados and Canada, and the UK Mission to the UN in New York.

Professor E. J. Rees (OS) (m) (1979-1984) ENGINEERING:CIVIL/ENVIRONMENTAL John is a Director with Flint & Neill, a firm of civil and structural consulting engineers, specialising in bridges, masts and towers. He has worked on some of the world’s longest bridges and tallest guyed masts, both on construction sites and in the design office. John is a Visiting Professor at the University of Birmingham, where he holds an honorary chair in structural dynamics in the School of Civil Engineering. John sits on numerous national and international code committees and is currently Chairman of the Eurocode Committee for masts, towers and chimneys.

Soltau (OS) (h) (1974-1979) ENGINEERING: AERONAUTICAL/MECHANICAL After completing his degree at Bristol University, sponsored by the Dowty Group, Martin worked with Martin Marietta in the USA for a year, training in Guided Weapon Systems Engineering. He has enjoyed a career in the aerospace industry, working for a variety of companies, from small consultancies to large blue chip manufacturing firms. More recently he was Head of Programmes for Smiths Aerospace, leading equipment development projects for a range of military and civil aircraft. He is currently a Business Manager heading up Frazer-Nash Consultancy’s Aerospace sector.

Al Halwachi (OS) (c) (2007-2009) ENGINEERING: CHEMICAL Hassan is an Engineer at Genesis Oil and Gas Consultants in London and an Associate Member of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). He holds a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College. Having joined Genesis in 2013, he worked on a variety of projects in oil and gas field development. He also has experience in oil refining, petrochemicals, software consulting and academic research, which he gained through summer placements in the UK and the Middle-East.

ENVIRONMENTAL BUSINESS Nick set up Habitat Aid in 2008. The company promotes and sells native British trees, plants and seeds, offers consultancy and planting/seeding services, and supports a number of conservation charities. Prior to this Nick had a career in the City, finishing as a founding partner of a firm running Japanese hedge funds.

ORGANISATION Lavinia is a Senior Tutor with Art History Abroad. AHA run gap year courses which enable you to enjoy Italy and see a wealth of beautiful art while having fun. Their courses draw connections between art history, philosophy, music, literature and history and will involve travelling the length of Italy, absorbing a breadth of knowledge, from the Ancient World to the Renaissance, the Baroque and contemporary art. Depending on the course you choose, you will stay in Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples, Siena, Perugia, Palermo, Syracuse or Verona.

ORGANISATION Guy works with The Leap, a small, independent, family owned and run gap year company, which has been offering award winning overseas volunteering projects across Africa, Asia and South America for 13 years. Their projects combine a unique mix of multiple locations and volunteering project opportunities in eco-tourism, community projects and conservation, as well as internships (law, teaching, care, business and media) that combine volunteering across the globe. The Leap are passionately committed to helping young people travel, develop and fulfil their potential whilst making a positive difference both financially and through worthwhile voluntary projects amongst indigenous and economically deprived communities, forging life-long friendships based on mutual respect and cultural appreciation.

Mr G. D. Gould (OS) (m) (1981-1985) HISTORY RELATED/HERITAGE Giles left Sherborne in 1985, and went straight into work in the hospitality and leisure industry. Following a stint on a management scheme with the Savoy Hotel, he worked with a range of companies connected to the leisure, tourism, events and heritage industries. In 2001 he became Operations Manager at the City Hall in Salisbury, a 1255 capacity multi-functional concert hall, working with artistes ranging from Archbishop Desmond Tutu to Jimmy Carr, and bands from Wheatus to Morrissey. At that time he also set up and ran 4 of his own small businesses, including an award winning farm shop, a livery business, self-catering holiday cottages and a property management company; all of which were sold in 2010. In 2010 he was appointed Head of Commercial Services for the National Museum of the Royal Navy, one of the country’s top 15 visitor attractions, welcoming over 1.5 million visitors per year, spread across sites located all around the UK. In this role he runs the income generation of the group, including retail, cafe, corporate events, media, and brand licensing. The pride of the museum’s collection is HMS Victory, and this provides his greatest challenge, balancing the curatorial and conservation needs of the ship, with the demand for income generation, yet at the same time guarding against reputational damage.

Skipsey (OS) (b) (2001-2006) INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Having achieved a 2:1 (Hons) at Bristol University in Computer Science, Matthew joined M12 Solutions, a Hampshire-based B2B telecoms and connectivity provider. At M12 Solutions he has had various roles including developing websites, looking after the company’s IT systems and selling telecoms solutions to customers. In 2010 he founded Wessex Internet, a local Dorset-based rural Internet Service Provider which now has over 500 customers, including Clayesmore and Leweston Schools. More recently he has opened M12’s London office and was promoted to Technical Director.

JOURNALISM Sam is a Journalist at the BBC. He started his career in the BBC’s Economics and Business Unit, producing reports for the national news bulletins. He spent several years at BBC World TV News, where he led a newsroom team through the busy periods of Breaking News after the September 11th attacks, the War in Afghanistan and the Second Invasion of Iraq. He then worked as an Editor of the Day at Newsnight during the scandal over the death of Dr David Kelly and the events that led to the Hutton Inquiry. He is currently Change Coordinator for BBC News, working on digital transformation.

Mr P. Hanson LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE Philip formed The Landscape Practice in 1989, having qualified as a landscape architect in 1980, working notably on the Liverpool Garden Festival from inception to completion in 1984, and subsequently Hythe Marina Village, Hinckley Point and BAA Stansted. He is Practice Director of this award winning landscape consultancy, providing design and consultancy services, urban design, landscape planning and garden design.

Tom is a barrister at 3 Paper Buildings who specialises in Criminal and Regulatory law. He defends and prosecutes

cases ranging from white collar fraud to drugs and firearms offences. He also represents individuals who

both commercial and private clients. He deals with commercial and property disputes including contractual,

James studied History at Worcester College, Oxford. Following graduation in 2009, he spent a gap year undertaking various secondments and internships across a range of industries, and taking in both London and Phnom Penh, before obtaining a training contract with “Magic Circle” law firm Freshfields. Having first completed the GDL (conversion course) and the LPC (vocational course), James has recently qualified as a solicitor in Freshfields’ corporate department.

LAW: SOLICITOR (PRIVATE PRACTICE) Lucy qualified as a Solicitor in 1999 and joined Porter Dodson in 2005. Since qualification she has specialised in wills, trusts and probate work. This includes advising clients on making wills, administering estates on death, advising on tax planning issues and trusts. It also involves acting for elderly clients who need help in managing their financial affairs and includes the preparation of powers of attorney and liaising with the Court, if someone lacks capacity to manage their financial affairs. Lucy is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, Solicitors for the Elderly and the Private Client Section of the Law Society.

MANAGEMENT CONSULTANCY Charles graduated with a BA in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford. He spent 5 years in industry as a Project Engineer. After completing his MBA at the London Business School, he became a management consultant joining Andersen Consulting, now Accenture. Initially he was a Consultant in the Strategy Practice, then a Partner leading the UK Supply Chain team and finally a Senior Executive in the Outsourcing group. He left after 17 years to become an Independent Consultant, Board Director and Angel Investor. Charles is a Chartered Engineer, a Member of the Institute of Engineering Technology and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply.

Soul (OS) (d) (2000-2005) MARKETING/CLOSING SPEAKER Hugo is a Global Client Partnership Manager at Google’s Paris office, working with some of the world’s biggest advertisers to build and develop their internet marketing strategy across Google’s products. Prior to joining Google, Hugo worked for Accenture, working with clients such as Shell, Sainsbury’s and the NHS on major strategic technology projects.

Richard is Managing Partner of Oystercatchers, the industry-leading management consultants specialising in high performance partnerships between brands and their agencies. He has worked internationally with The CocaCola Company, domestically with McDonald’s restaurants, heading Adult and Family Marketing, and, before Oystercatchers, with Publicis Worldwide, where he tripled the size of the agency’s P&G business in EMEA whilst leading Publicis Groupe’s African expansion in parallel. In addition, Richard has worked for Carlson Marketing Group, and gained extensive brand experience including Scottish Courage, Scottish & Newcastle Retail, PepsiCo, Britvic Soft Drinks, Diageo, Pernod Ricard, Hotpoint and Orange. Away from work Richard is the resident Brand Expert for Channel 5 News, a Director and Trustee of The Ideas Foundation and a regular commentator in the media. He is a Chartered Marketer, Fellow of both The Royal Society of Arts and The Royal Geographical Society, a Business Leader of The Marketing Society and has previously been a Board Member of both the European Association of Communication Agencies and the International Agencies Council.

Dr M. T. Grist (OS) (g) (1992-1997) MEDICINE (GP) After leaving Sherborne, Matthew attended St George’s Hospital Medical School in London, graduating in 2003 with an intercalated BSc and MBBS. He then undertook junior hospital jobs along the South Coast and in New Zealand before changing to general practice training. He returned to Sherborne and has been a partner at Newland Surgery since 2011.

Andrew studied Medicine at Dundee and joined the Navy as a medical student. He passed the Commando course, got his green beret, and was a medical officer with the Royal Marines for three years. Back in the NHS he trained as a Cardiologist and worked as a consultant in Bristol, Auckland, New Zealand and now in Yeovil. His special interests are looking at the heart, using ultrasound and MRI scanning, and training the next generation of young doctors.

OIL AND GAS CAREERS Graduating in Geography, Charles joined Shell International in the Procurement and Logistics function. Following UK training assignments on and offshore, he negotiated equipment contracts for the company’s North Sea activities. Moving to Brazil in 1993, he headed a project developing mass production of material for Shell’s Latin American retail network. Assignments followed in Malaysia, the Netherlands and then Oman, where he headed the national oil company’s procurement function for 4 years. Returning to Brazil in 2004 as a member of Shell Brazil E&P’s management team, he was responsible for all company contracts needed to open up a frontier production area in ultra deep water. Relocating to the UK in late 2009, he joined BG Group Plc and heads up a global team providing contracting support to the Group’s worldwide Exploration and Well Engineering functions.

Le May (OS) (b) (2002-2007) PUBLIC RELATIONS/FINANCIAL PR After leaving Sherborne, Alex spent a year out working in investment banking and travelling and then studied History and Spanish at Cardiff University. After graduating he worked for Kreab Gavin Anderson within the Energy, Public Affairs and Financial PR teams before moving to FTI Consulting. At FTI, Alex works across a number of teams including, TMT, Industrials, M&A and Leisure working on non-listed and listed companies ranging from Tech start-ups to FTSE 100 companies.

RETAIL MANAGEMENT

Tom is a Director of 3 companies within the retail and wholesale jewellery sector. Swag Jewellers is a family owned and run business which started in 1974. Currently there are 7 stores within the group and over 100 staff. T&E Ferris was founded in 2009 and since then has grown at a rapid rate. Opening 17 stores in 18 months, it now employs over 400 staff across the UK and, in 2014 was highlighted in the Investec “Mid-Market Index”. The report was commissioned by Investec and Duedil to focus on private companies and their compound growth over a 3 year period. In 2012 the group entered into the wholesale sector, with the launch of Diamonfire, the perfect alternative to a traditional diamond, which is now sold in over 350 locations across the British Isles.

Squadron Leader T. R. Kirkin (FAIR ONLY)

ROYAL AIR FORCE Trevor flew as a Royal Air Force navigator for over 30 years. From his first posting navigating the venerable Shackleton AEW2 in Cold War operations over the North Atlantic, to his last front-line appointment commanding the Operations Wing at RAF Waddington and flying E3D Sentry AWACS aircraft in the Balkans and Afghanistan theatres, he has specialised in Airborne Early Warning and Control. His other roles included Qualified Navigation Instructor, Royal Navy liaison officer, Ministry of Defence staff officer and Chairman of the RAF Voluntary Band Association (a secondary duty). He retired from the RAF in 2008 with some 3500 flying hours and joined the RAF Reserve as the Senior Careers Liaison Officer for South Wales and the South West.

ROYAL NAVY AND ROYAL MARINES Shane joined the Royal Navy in 1986, undertaking a 4 ½ year apprenticeship, which qualified him as an Aircraft Technician. His career has seen him serve in a variety of roles and locations, from repairing and testing aircraft instruments in a workshop to supervising and managing the maintenance and repair of Naval helicopters both ashore on Naval Air Stations and afloat on Frigates and Aircraft Carriers, deploying throughout the world. His current job is within recruiting as the Area Careers Liaison Officer for Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire, advising and assisting potential officer candidates in pursuing their career aspirations.

Lamb (OS) (c) (1998-2003) SPORTS RELATED CAREERS Henry graduated with a Geography and Sport Science degree from Oxford Brookes and then completed his Secondary Post-Graduate Certificate in Education. He taught for over 3 years at Fulham Preparatory School and, during this time, ran holiday tennis programmes alongside his full-time teaching. His experience of playing representative sport at a high level and a turbulent childhood allowed him to gain a good insight into creating an environment where children can prepare themselves for the “road”. In January 2013 he left teaching to concentrate full time on “Henry Lamb Tennis”. Over 500 children attended their holiday camps in 2014, with 28 children attending a residential camp in France. HLT works with a number of schools in SW London providing term time tennis programmes and inter school tournaments.

On leaving university, Tom joined the wine trade to work for an Australian flying winemaker. He spent a year in that

Royal Marines and spent 5 years in Sales and Marketing in FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) with Mars and

job and then the next thirteen years building up Jascots Wine Merchants in London. He left in 2009 to start The

Bacardi/Martini. That was followed by 9 years as a business consultant specialising in dental practices (owning one) before, in 2007, setting up his own cider making business, “Orchard Pig”, where he cites “tasting and market research” as the best parts. His company enjoyed 70% growth in 2014 and is now supplying bars, pubs and restaurants (including Browns, All Bar One, Miller & Carter, Nicholsons Pubs, Loungers) throughout the UK as well as Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Majestic. Orchard Pig products are now enjoyed in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Vintner, which ships 100 wines direct from the growers and supplies some of the top corporate businesses, event companies and restaurants in London. Tom is currently studying for his Master of Wine, the most prestigious title in the world of wine.

Mr R. J. Startin (OS) (f) (1981-1986) TEACHING Robert has been teaching since 1992, having read Theology and completed a PGCE and M.Ed at Hull University. He started teaching at Princethorpe College, Warwickshire, then joined a prep school, Westbourne House, and, since 2000, has been at The Dragon School, a coeducational, preparatory school in Oxford, where he is the Head of RS and School Chaplain. He and his wife Kate were Houseparents for 10 years between 2001 and 2011.

Mr R. O’Brien VETERINARY SCIENCE Bob qualified from the Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies, Edinburgh University, in 1989 and started his career in Cornwall in a very mixed practice. Here he gained a diverse experience, dealing with the full range of domestic animals including dog, cats, horses and some more exotic species such as seals and penguins. After 5 years he moved north to Cheshire and spent two years in a practice specialising in small animals. He moved to Dorset in 1996 and is now based at Southill Vets, where he has been developing varied interests, including ophthalmology, feline infectious diseases, canine internal medicine and the use of technology within the practice.
