SHERBORNE FOUNDATION SUPPORTING THE SCHOOL FOR 15 YEARS

2 0 1 3 G I V I N G R E P O RT

INTRODUCTION FROM THE CHAIRMAN As you can see from the cover of this Giving Report we are proudly celebrating fifteen years of the Foundation and its impact on the life of Sherborne. Although this is a mere blip in the extensive history of the School, I hope this Report reflects the significant effects of your generosity during this time. In this Report, we outline just a few of the projects you have already supported and take a look at the current Annual Fund projects, which are now part of the fabric of Sherborne in 2013. We also consider some innovative projects for the coming three years that will further enrich the academic life of the School. Finally, we look forward to the next fifteen years and at what may be on the horizon with the Headmaster’s vision for Sherborne. It just remains for me to thank you for joining me and the 2,408 OS, parents and friends of Sherborne who have supported the Foundation so generously over these JOHN POCOCK

remarkable fifteen years.

ongoing programme basis rather than as ad hoc appeals. Since then, we have raised over ÂŁ8.5m for the School and, as you will see, have been able to ensure that donors are kept informed of the progress throughout the years and have repeated their support regularly. Bursary Recipients

Of the many projects that you have supported over these 15 years (the full list is printed in this report) we would like to highlight just a few here. Clearly, the most obvious impact of our work is the Music School which has allowed Sherborne, with inspiring teaching, to take music to another level. Sherborne is now extremely well regarded for music and we have seen significant growth in the numbers of boys taking music lessons and, most visibly, joining the choir (which now numbers over 100 boys). We have also been able to support bursaries, and seven boys have received support, and continue to do so, through your generosity. Those who have left have gone on to careers in the arts, the legal profession, sports, business and the military. A New Music School

Travel and Tour Bursary Fund

Travel and tour bursaries have also allowed fifty boys, already on bursaries and scholarships, to undertake sporting, musical and academic tours to enhance their education and many have gone on to obtain representative honours in sport and musical careers. Sport has also seen a boost with improved facilities including an extension to the Upper Pavilion, the Hughie Holmes hockey pitch and all weather cricket nets. The Foundation has, in recent years, concentrated its efforts on the academic aspect of School life and broadening the boys’ horizons to life beyond their School days. The following pages outline the work of the Annual Fund and the projects it funds each year in these areas.

On a recent visit to Princeton we met with programme director Dr Christopher Campisano who spoke of the great experience of the graduates and their feedback, he said:

Foundation Fellows 2013-14, Amelia Bensch-Schaus and Reid Fritz

The Foundation Fellowships Over the past three years we have worked with the Princeton University Teacher Preparation Programme to bring bright young graduates to Sherborne to help the teaching staff to further enrich the lives of the boys. These Fellows have all been high flyers while at Princeton and their enthusiasm for life,

It is a wonderful exchange which we hope to continue long into the future.”

Hugo Bromell (L6, b), tell us more about the influence he had on them as a Fellow from 2012-13:

“Mr Weylandt ceaselessly helped and pushed everyone around him to greater things in every aspect. He was always willing to stop and talk about anything. These words do not fully do justice to how much of an influence Mr Weylandt had on the School community, especially those who frequented any co-curricular societies. In essence, we wish he hadn’t had to leave and hopefully he gained as much from Sherborne as we gained from him.”

The Inspirational Speaker Programme This programme helps us bring speakers to the School on a regular basis who can give the boys a window into the world outside Sherborne by recounting their experiences of difficult or challenging professions, places and times. The speakers have varied from bomb disposal experts who have worked in Afghanistan and journalists who saw the revolution in Tahrir Square, Cairo, to charity workers who focus on those with facial disfigurement, and economists who give a clear insight into the world economy. These speakers all give the boys a view into life beyond the Courts and prepare them, in part, for their futures at university and beyond. For this programme to continue we need your support through the Annual Fund.

Sports Coaching Fund Over the past four years, our Directors of Sport have strived to take Sherborne sport to a new level where we are one of the best sporting schools in the country without becoming a sports academy. This has been made possible through strong and dedicated coaching which supplements the support provided by the School. Consequently, Sherborne sport has recently witnessed an increase in representative caps for our boys with England in rugby, as well as other advances such as a higher win rate and record breaking in sports such as tennis, swimming, shooting and football. We also continue to support the Travel and Tour Bursary Fund, and bursarial support for boys to help widen access to Sherborne.

Leadership Gifts The Leadership Gift allows the Foundation to recognise those donors who commit between £1,000 and £5,000 per year to the Annual Fund, and enable us to deliver the projects that have become so important to enhancing the education of our boys. A Leadership Gift can be as little as £14.50 per week which with Gift Aid is worth £1,006 over the year. If just 250 OS or parents were to give at this level each year we would complete the funding for all our Annual Fund projects. Please consider joining me in becoming a Leadership donor and therefore becoming a member of the Chairman’s Society. MANY THANKS JOHN POCOCK

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE The Annual Fund is an incredibly important element in the enrichment of the boys’ lives at Sherborne, and we hope that in this Giving Report we have outlined the impact your support has had and will have in the future. Of that future, we are currently working on the ‘master plan’ for the campus and examining what the School needs to remain at the cutting edge of education, and to remain a Sherborne you can be proud of. We hope, in 2015, to bring a new project out of the master plan for donors to consider and support. At this stage the master plan is looking at all aspects of Sherborne life and is being explored in line with the strategy for the School. We hope to bring you more news on this soon so please stay in touch with the Foundation team. THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR SUPPORT. GORDON PARRY Chairman of Governors

The Bow Society We would also like to thank all those who have pledged to support the Sherborne Foundation with a gift in their Wills. It has always been the view of the Foundation that legacies are a private and personal matter and therefore we feel it correct that members only make their names public when they wish to.
