GOVERNORS It hardly seems possible that another year has flown by since the Editor asked me to pen a few words for the magazine. I suspect the speed of time comes as less of a surprise to those of you spending more hours in The Prep than me because whenever I arrive at the campus I am always struck by the bustle, energy and pace of life lived by the boys and girls and staff. It is a stimulating environment where enthusiasms are infectious and the welcome always warm.

My fellow governors have been marvellously supportive during the year, devoting huge amounts of time to assorted sub-committees as we try to fulfil our roles as supportive, critical friends to the Headmaster and staff.

While a lot of what the Governing Body does is unseen, there is one thing that is going to make a very visible and practical improvement to those of us who drive into the school. It has been exciting to be able to respond to something that so many parents have put very high on their wish-list for the school. By the time the September term begins the new loop road will be functioning and I expect the benefits will not just be safer traffic flows and better parking.

Meanwhile, as the end of the academic year approaches my diary seems to be filling up fast with the myriad of events which pupils and staff summon the energy to create for the rest of us to enjoy; but then, that is The Prep for you.

A R EVIEWOF THE SCHOOL

YEAR

Once again, our Year 8 pupils excelled in the examinations for their senior schools, all moving on to the schools of their choice. In scholarships, the year performed very well in achieving fifteen awards in total with five full academic scholarships to Sherborne, Bruton School for Girls, King’s Bruton and Dauntseys and a range of other awards for music, design technology and sport. One of the recipients, Oscar Leach, who won a design technology award to Sherborne, also came first in a national competition to design a garden pod, winning himself a substantial cash prize and the school a 3-D printer. The teachers have been very pleased by the culture of industry and responsibility shown by the children this year - one reason why our children are welcomed by senior schools who value their initiative, independence and work ethic. We are very proud of them all.

In sport, a number of teams have excelled this year. The Under 11 Girls hockey team reached the national finals for the first time; our colts rugby team completed an unbeaten season, including winning the Bryanston Sevens while our 1st Sevens won our own tournament in an impressive final against Hazlegrove. Another significant feature was the school’s return to the Rosslyn Park Rugby Sevens, a national event at which we have enjoyed success in the past.

There have been a considerable number of individual highlights in a record number of sports with medals achieved at national level in biathlon, skiing, karate, and swimming with Jai Thompson’s Silver medal in the National Biathlon championships a highlight. Our 4 x 100 Under 12 team of Matthew Longley, Sam Reynolds, Roly Newman and Toby Whigham travelled to the Nationals as Wessex champions while George Case travelled to Portugal for the European Baithle Championships, having finished 3rd in the national Modern Penthalon championships and 4th at the British skiing championships during the year.

We have had an outstanding series of music concerts and plays, including excellent productions of ‘Peter Pan’, ‘Treasure Island’, ‘The Tempest’ and ‘The Musicians of Brenan’, and an excellent summer concert. As well, there have been class trips to Brenscombe, Paris, London and Bristol, all 3

contributing to a busy and successful year. And once again we have been spoilt by another superb art exhibition, courtesy of Mr Velazquez and the collective talents of the pupils, teachers and parents.

Of course, these are the more tangible measures of the year just past.

What we will remember in time, though, is not so much what children have achieved, but the intangibles, their spirit, their enthusiasm, their care of each other and their pride in their school – the unfading wreath of childhood.

Many of you will know we are described in the Good Schools Guide as a characterful prep marching to the beat of its own drum and as a community that thinks outside the box, that encourages creativity,

individuality and initiative. If you want a more objective view, however, the place to go is to the inspection reports, produced over the years by the Department of Education, and later by Ofsted and now by the Independent Schools Inspectorate. Here is an extract from one such report about Sherborne Prep: “The school is exceedingly well-administered and the general arrangements leave little to be desired. The children lead a full and active life, and are receiving a good training under influences that are likely to remain with them permanently. Games are carefully encouraged and supervised by the staff, but in other respects it is rightly desired to leave the children as much liberty as possible to follow their own bent in the occupation of their leisure hours. There appears to be an excellent spirit of trust in the school which would prevent the likelihood of such liberty being abused. Children are encouraged to take an interest in Natural History and Sunday afternoons are usually spent by them in rambles over the country in search of specimens to add to their collections. The surrounding country offers great scope for such excursions, which are not supervised, children being encouraged to exercise some independence of choice.�

That was a part of the summary of the inspection report of Sherborne Preparatory School from the summer of 1914. Trust. Independence of Choice. Giving children as much liberty as possible to follow their own bent. I believe this spirit still lies at the heart of this school. It’s what we do well. And we must keep building trust in the good of humanity and not teach children to fear the unknown. Children must be encouraged to look at the future with confidence, optimism and joy for therein lies the way to happy lives. And we must not shrink the world they live in by building walls instead of pathways.

Teaching is about instilling in the child a desire to learn so that they might become autonomous learners in the same way that parenting is about equipping the child to find their own way in the world. Trust is in the letting go; the independence that our children acquire is achieved by taking up the slack. Giving children the freedom and the responsibility to plan their own journeys. That is what the Prep was celebrating 99 years ago and what it strives to do today.

FROM THECHAPLAIN One of the high points of my week is my walk down from Sherborne Girls through what is fondly named the ‘Granny Patch’ to Sherborne Prep school to take Assembly on Thursday mornings. I’m getting to know the elderly people who live there now by a cheery hello and a wave! I’m getting to know everyone at Sherborne Prep more and more too, particularly as you are so good at putting up your hands and volunteering for unknown activities during the assembly! From reading short plays out, sight unseen, acting out parables and stories ( Zachaeus in the tree, the parable of the hidden treasure, the two builders, to name a few) For me, the most chaotic assembly was the best....watching the whole school, staff included, get down on their hands and knees to help everyone succeed in making....a paper boat! The theme: Pentecost; we’re all in the same boat together. It has to be said that some were real experts (not staff!) but the best thing of all was how you worked together as a team, spreading the expertise, assisting quietly when help was needed, congratulating every effort, however crumpled! Surely that’s the way a school should work! Well done!

FROM THE BURSAR The sound of diggers and demolishers are currently filling the air down by the Bursary as we begin work on the new parking and loop road. As the walls are slowly lowered, one can already see how the school will look so much better when we have combined the upper and lower parts. The place has buzzed this year with many small scale projects around the site, as well: notably, all computers are being upgraded, boarding furniture is being updated, and classrooms are constantly being improved. We are continually trying to keep the school looking at its best. In fact, if you stand still for too long, there is a good chance you will be painted. You have been warned!

SCHOOL Being the Head of the School for a term is a role that every pupil should aspire to. It is enjoyable but sometimes challenging. Our experiences will become part of our treasured memories of Sherborne Prep.

Being Head Boy was a great experience, admittedly a little daunting at first but a good experience all the same. Working alongside the head girl and an excellent team of prefects made the job a bit easier. As Head Boy I was able to enjoy various opportunities such as the jubilee tree planting and giving tours on our open days, both of which were great experiences.

Having a weekly meeting with the Headmaster also proved very informative and constructive.

Being a Head of School was an honour as I was representing the school in all aspects of life. I attended weekly meetings with Mr Tait which I thoroughly enjoyed. I was frequently required for public speaking which was unnerving at first but by the end of the term I was speaking with confidence in the abbey in front of the pupils, teachers and parents. It has been an incredible term I have loved every minute.

SMOKE

I rushed home from school. I was so excited. My family had a bonfire night once every year. It was always on one specific day: the first of June. Today was that day. I had been invited over to my best friend Joe’s house, but I had said no to the offer. I arrived home and slammed open the door.

“Hello sweetie!” my mum shouted to me from next door. “We’re just preparing the bonfire.”

“Yay!” I screamed. “I’m so excited!” I ran to the window and stared out into the garden. There was Dad making a ring of stones around the pile of sticks, leaves and old newspaper. I waved to him. He saw me and waved back. I rushed out to greet him. “Nice bonfire, aint it not!” shouted Dad. “It’s wonderful,” I replied.

“We should be ready in one hour.” I looked at my watch. Five thirty was the time. “So at six thirty?” I asked.

“Yep” replied Dad. I ran back inside and started unpacking my bag, while I could hear Mum preparing the feast in the kitchen. “One more hour, one more hour,” I chanted.

“Only if you do your homework!” Mum exclaimed “But Mum…” “Homework first!”

“Ok” I replied reluctantly.

Forty more minutes. Thirty minutes. Twenty. Ten. Five. I watched the clock like an eagle watching its prey. “Five more minutes!” I shouted.

“I know!” shouted Dad, “But we’re ready so we can start now.”

“Oh yeah! Here we go!” I shouted as I ran outside.

There I was sitting happily by the bonfire. Little flames shot up and burning leaves were hurled into the air. I could smell the marshmallow roasting on my stick. A leaf which was burning flew up and landed on Dad’s marshmallow. It went up in flames and afterwards the burned remainders of it were to be seen. We all laughed. Another leaf shot up and landed on Mum’s marshmallow. It went black and fell off her stick into the fire. Again we all laughed. A leaf flew up and ignited my marshmallow. I flicked my stick around wildly, and the marshmallow flew off and landed on the porch. Nobody laughed. Suddenly the porch burst into flames. Everybody screamed. The flames licked the side of our house, igniting everything. The fence around our garden burst into flames. Black smoke was rising. The burning fence toppled into our garden. Trees and grass were set alight.

We were in the middle of a ring of fire. The flames came nearer. Then darkness.

I woke up in hospital. I lifted up my hand. The pain was immense. My arm had been roasted. I clumsily picked up a mirror with my scorched fingers and looked into it. The face I saw looked nothing like me. I had been burned beyond description. I thought of the menacing black smoke. “If only I had gone to Joe’s house!” I exclaimed.

It has been an interesting and productive year in the art department, culminating with the summer exhibition full of colour, poignant images and originality. We believe that creativity is like a constant current of life that permeates all areas of the school, allowing our pupils to express freely their ideas, their emotions and hopes.

Poppy Smith, Amelia Whinney, Victor Tuaev, Constance Cottrell, Hector Fiennes, Amelia Mercer, Archie Macintosh and Isobel Toovey produced imaginative compositions in a wide range of media.

OLD PREPPERS Pupils in Year 6 had the chance to attend a lecture by George Maltby about his artistic development after leaving the prep. He continued his education at Kings Bruton where he completed his GCSEs. In September 2012, George moved to Oxford Tutorial College, where he is now studying Alevels in Business Studies, Spanish and Photography.

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

THERE HAVE BEEN MANY GREAT THINGS HAPPENING IN DESIGN TECHNOLOGY THIS YEAR...

The DT Summer Holiday Challenge to design and make something useful from something old – produced some fantastic designs, including India Hutton’s fairground (the ‘Most Ingenious Reuse of Materials’ prize) and Naima Humpage’s shoulder bag (the ‘Best Design’ prize). [DT 1] Theodora Cottrell was the first to make use of CADCAM in a project – completing her design on 2D CAD software, newly installed at the prep, before having her design laser cut at Sherborne School in coloured acrylic.

She used the acrylic panels to complete her hexagonal, spinning CD rack. [DT 2] Oscar Leach completed a fantastic entry in a new design competition, sponsored by ALFED and Alupro, promoting the use of aluminium as a sustainable and recyclable material.

He entered the ‘Built Environment’ category, designing a garden building ‘Inspired by Nature’ with his family pod design. [DT 3] He won his category - the judges said they would all like one for their own gardens. He attended the Celebration event at the Thinktank Science Museum in Birmingham in February, collecting his prize of £250 and also winning a 3D printer kit for the school. [DT 4]

an aluminium tealight holder (a project inspired by the design competition) [DT 7] and a desk storage unit, fabricated from acrylic. [DT 8] His portfolio also showed evidence of his design skills, documenting research, different sources and inspiration for his ideas and how they developed into his final designs. We were really delighted that he was successful in winning a DT Award.

A special invitation followed later. [DT 5] [DT 6] Oscar had also been working hard on a DT portfolio, showcasing different projects he had completed, as part of his submission for a Design Technology Award at Sherborne School. This included

A select group of children have volunteered to take on the challenge of building the 3D printer that Oscar won for the school. This is no mean task with hundreds of parts to assemble correctly.

Buckets of water, damaged but intact, Liquid spills over the side, carving pathways in the grime.

Pathways like the corridors of life, each trail making its own decision, going a different way, separated from its allies.

People sit, propped up against dwellings, Heads back, willing for compassion but without the strength to summon it.

The tiny street, houses decades of grief.

Children laugh and smile, but within their body, veins of agony stain their lives.

Nature, the force that is angelic, but underneath is unruly, wreaking havoc where we cannot see.

Human brains have not yet the registered the sheer power of this force, but until they do, nature is the true leader.

A SORROWFUL LAD Hushed winds propel the budding daisies to and fro, ear-splitting clamour abiding.

The sorrowful lads perceived that there’s no turning back, manipulating the most of each single last minute, sitting apprehensively, but furthermore impassive, with countless other surrounding comrades, all in the same spirits with significant careers ahead, but yet no life to live.

THIS YEAR THE DRAMA DEPARTMENT HAS HAD A VERY BUSY SCHEDULE. WITH FOUR PRODUCTIONS IN THREE TERMS, THE CHILDREN HAVE BEEN VERY ACTIVELY FLAUNTING THEIR TALENTS FOR AUDIENCES MADE UP OF PARENTS, PEERS, STAFF AND MEMBERS OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITY.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DRAMA YEAR:

PETER PAN Performed by: Years 7 and 8 Director: Miss Trkulja

This magical production was performed in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital, to whom J M Barrie bequeathed the rights of Peter Pan upon his death. The show starred Henry Beddow in the title role, with Izzi Toovey as Wendy, Tilly Moorhouse as Tinkerbell, Ben WIltshire and Daniel Berry and John and Michael and Patrick Reynolds as the villainous Captain Hook. Theodora Cottrell captured hearts as the loveable but hapless Smee and Hosanna Serukenya's beautiful singing opened the show in style. The superb Technical team of Daniel Wylie and Matthew Hetherington complete the list of the fantastic performances put in by cast and crew in this heart warming production.

SHERLOCK HOLMES Performed by: The Year 8 Leavers Director: Miss Trkulja

The Year 8 Leavers production has become an annual tradition not to be missed, with our talented leavers taking the opportunity to have one last dramatic hurrah before waving goodbye to Drama at the Prep. It is something that has become an important memory for many Old Preppers. This year’s production of Sherlock Holmes was no exception. Key performances were provided by Tilly Moorhouse as Holmes, Kofi Cox as Watson, Ben Wiltshire as the Narrator, Theodora Cottrell as Jack McMurdo and Ruslan Tuaev as the sinister Bodymaster McGinty. Technical support from Daniel Wylie, Matthew Hetherington, Emily Wastell and Annabel Harris made for a professional finish. This talented group thrilled and chilled audiences and made it a tough job for the Drama Department to wave farewell to the cast and crew.

TREASURE ISLAND Performed by: Years 3 and 4 Director: Mrs Meikle

Mrs Meikle's directorial debut at Sherborne Prep was a roaring success, with cast and audience alike thoroughly enjoying the swashbuckling performances put in by the Year 4 children, supported by Year 3. Notable individual performances were produced by Harry Whigham as Long John Silver, Charlie Mason as Jim Hawkins, Jimmy Doggrell as Billy Bones and Daniel Meier and Fabian Mercer as pirates Black Dog and George Merry.

The band, made up of Miss Simmonds, Miss Trkulja, Arthur Stickland and Hosanna Serukenya, added some live music vibrancy to an already rip-roaring show. The production was then sold on DVD to parents, ensuring that the swashbuckling fun is there to be revisited at those important family occasions!

THE TEMPEST Performed by: Years 5 and 6 Director: Years 5 and 6, assisted by Miss Trkulja

The annual Year 5 and 6 Shakespeare project hands the reins of the Drama Department over the children themselves. The two Year 5 classes and an enthusiastic group of Year 6 Dramatists studied The Tempest and then took the key characters and plot points, putting them into a new context in order to create three separate versions of the play unlike anything seen before! 5E put a modern twist on the traditional plot, 5W replaced the main characters with those from James Bond and Year 6 added songs to the plot to make it a modern musical. Seeing Prospero working magic on his iPad, Sebastian and Antonio replaced by Bond villains Odd Job and Dr No and seeing Caliban express himself through the song 'Caliban-ban Style' and the whole cast dancing the Gangnam dance, was not something anyone expected to see. The original and innovative interpretations reflected the hard work and in-depth studying done by the children, who wrote the scripts, directed, and technically produced the evening.

THE ROTARY YOUTH SPEAKS COMPETITION

The Rotary Youth Speaks competition was held at The Prep on Monday 26th November. This event aims to offer young people an experience of speaking on a public platform as members of a team and the opportunity to practice high standards of expression, presentation and appearance.

The standard was extremely high and we were delighted that teams 3 and 4 were selected to go through to the second round. On Thursday 28th February, Mrs Suttle took our winning teams to Saint Mary’s school in Puddletown where the children spoke confidently and knowledgeably about their subjects. Although Beaminster and The Gryphon were selected as winners, our children commented that, although they had found the experience challenging, they had learned a great deal and would like to take part in similar activities in the future.

THE POWYS SHEILD FOR LITERATURE The Powys Shield for Literature is awarded annually and is open to children from Year 7 and 8. A detailed portfolio of written work must be compiled and submitted for judging at the end of the summer term. This year, the difficult task of judging the winner was assigned to Winstones bookshop in Cheap Street and our thanks go to Wayne for performing this tricky task for us. The winner was Emily Wastell who was selected for her wonderful description and enchanting imagery.

Annabel Harris was chosen as the winner of the MacNeice poetry prize whose writing is also powerful, effective and well structured.

THE GLOBE THEATRE Year 8 attended The Globe Theatre on 7th June for a production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream.’ We enjoyed studying the exhibition concerning Shakespeare’s life and times before moving into the theatre.

It was an exceptional and entertaining performance. The beautiful weather helped the audience to become completely absorbed by the riveting performance.

We were particularly entertained by Bottom and the rude mechanicals, who entered each time with an amusing clog dance. Titania the queen of the fairies was particularly impressive, played by Michelle Terry, the winner of the 2011 Olivier Award.

It was an extraordinary experience to watch live Shakespeare performed outside in authentic Renaissance costume, so expertly modelled by Tilly.

DEBATING AT THE PREP The school holds several formal debates throughout the academic year. They are, I believe, a wonderful vehicle for learning all sorts of important life-skills. By writing and then delivering a speech to a large audience, the children learn some major lessons while also enjoying themselves.

For a start, it takes many out of their comfort zone and introduces them to public speaking. It involves critical thinking, especially in response to the lively floor debates that follow the speeches. It introduces them to the art of persuasion and the use of rhetoric. And most importantly, it introduces them to the idea that many things in life do not have a straight forward answer. Ideas and movements need to be challenged.

I have always felt that debating an issue, with passion and humour, is an important part of being human. We are trying to

create, inquisitive, independent learners here at The Prep, who are not afraid to challenge the status quo when they leave. These debates provide a platform for just that type of creative thinking to emerge. They are also enormous fun and I hope to continue to develop this side of school life every academic year.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT WITH NUMEROUS CONCERTS, RECITALS, AND SHOWS. HAS BEEN AN EXCITING YEAR IN THE

CHRISTMAS CONCERT The Christmas Concert held during the Michaelmas Term was a very well attended event which showcased the many talents of our children, from solo performers to jazz bands, orchestra and numerous choirs, and was a tantalising precursor to the Christmas Service held in Sherborne Abbey.

During the Lent Term, three concerts were held at Cheap Street Church in which the children delighted parents and members of the public with their music making. This was later seen again at the Youth Makes Music Concert held at Digby Hall, the Clayesmore Jazz Festival and the highly successful production of Treasure Island, featuring the newly formed Sherborne Prep Rock Band ‘Polly and the Crackers.’ The Trinity Term played host to yet more musical extravaganzas, including the Summer Concert and Commemoration Service, as well as an informal Soloists Recital.

Over 60 children undertook the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music exams, with outstanding results; a true reflection on the excellent team of peripatetic staff at Sherborne Prep. As well as ABRSM exams, we also celebrated the achievements of three of our Year 8 pupils who attained prestigious scholarships in Music; Jordan Berry to Sherborne Boys School, Annabel Harris to Sherborne Girls School and Genevieve Baker to Kings Bruton.

The musical ensembles have flourished this year, with exciting new groups such as The School of Rock and Pop and Gospel Choir on offer.

The Orchestra and Choirs have performed some diverse and challenging repertoire, from Britten to the Beatles, and have showcased their hard work through a number of formal and informal concerts.

IT HAS BEEN ANOTHER BUSY YEAR IN THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT. JUNIOR LESSONS INVOLVE LEARNING WHILST HAVING FUN, SO MANY

PRACTICAL EXPERIMENTS ARE CARRIED OUT. Although exams become more serious in Years Six, Seven and Eight, experiments are still a very important feature of lessons.

Outside the classroom, the Year Six enjoyed a talk about Space, given by The Explorer Dome Team. The talk took place inside the dome, where amazing pictures were projected and the children were shown how to observe the sky at night.

THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE YEAR WAS AS USUAL THE YEAR 7 TRIP TO FRANCE. THE NEWLY TURNED YEAR 7 PUPILS WERE APPREHENSIVE AND A LITTLE BIT WARY OF A TRIP TO THE UNKNOWN FOR A WEEK. FOR MOST IT WAS THE FIRST TIME AWAY FROM HOME. MANY CHILDREN STILL DISCUSS THE TRIP, CITING IT AS THEIR FAVOURITE SCHOOL ACTIVITY. WHILE WRITING THIS ARTICLE, CUNDY AND TANAKA EXPRESSED THEIR WISH TO GO BACK. WHEN ASKED HOW MANY WOULD GO AGAIN, EVERYONE’S HAND SHOT RIGHT UP WITH CRIES OF, “OOOOOH YES!” Accompanying teachers were Mr Shepherd, Miss Wallington, Mr Howard, Miss Smith and Mr Mafu.

The Louvre

The Eiffel Tower

The children mention visiting the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, riding on a boat on the river Seine, shopping, dining at the University and the restaurant trip as their best memories. They all wish they had spent a little longer than a day at the school, which is very interesting as most of them were apprehensive about going to a foreign school. They understood more than they thought they were going to.

We stayed in a very nice old fashioned hotel with rooms of between 4 and 6 children. Each child had an electronic key for easy access.

The teachers spent a bit of time helping children get back to their rooms after locking themselves out the first day but soon everyone was aware and alert!

The French trip is a very useful way of starting Year 7 and helps children bond. I have always felt sorry for the children who are unable take part in the trip because they always wish they did when it is too late. They hear the great stories and feel sad.

We had another fantastic trip and they keep getting better each year!

Bongani Mafu

SPORT Rugby 1st XV Played 11 Won 4 lost 7 This was a season of real highs and lows in terms of performances. On reflection, there were two games we could have and should have won if we were at our best but that is not to say there were not some wonderful moments throughout the term. One of the great highlights was winning our own sevens tournament and appearing at Rosslyn Park for the first time in many years. Another was winning away at Sandroyd and playing one of the best halves of Prep School rugby I have seen for some time. They were great fun to coach and I really enjoyed getting to

know their characters more out on the games field. Rugby is the ultimate team game so it seems a little unfair to single out a few key players. Patrick Reynolds lead the team admirably and gave his all in every match. So too did George Sutton who is developing into a fine, tenacious flank forward. Youngsters to watch are T. Doggrell and T. Hague who already looked like accomplished players despite being Year 7’s. But of course, they played as part of a bigger unit of players, who are developing into fine young rugby players.

Rugby 3rd XV 2012 Alas, this was one of those rare seasons that did not include a victory but in spite of this, all was not doom and gloom.

Participation in the team is often transitory in nature as developing skills, illness and injury often results in players who started in the 3rd XV being promoted to the teams above. This was certainly the case this season. The starting line-up for the first match included nine players who had never played rugby before and ten of the team were learning the game in a second language. Some of that team became regular 2nd XV players and one made it all the way to the 1st XV. Well done Fred!

Colts B 2013 This was a team with a lot of spirit, a lot of desire and a willingness to face their challenge and play hard. A report from one of their matches best describes these boys:

We arrived at Millfield with a little bit of apprehension as most of us ‘feared’ the mighty Millfield so we decided to sit out most of the warm up session and clear our minds, talk about who we are first and focus our attention on the simple things that we can do. We are a team that can pass, we can tackle, ruck and we have a few great ball carrying forwards. We have pace and we have a lot of determination. Our weaknesses?

We can be self-doubting and we are nice people. We needed to use these weaknesses to be our strength! We were going to be nice to ourselves by not letting the occasion get to us. We were going to believe in our tackling ability and get up to the opponent.

The match started at a brisk pace with both sides looking hesitant. We recovered quicker and got up to the opposition’s faces. We moved forward as a unit and Robert scored a neat well worked team try under the posts.

Towards the end of the half Millfield pulled one back. At half time we revisited our strategy and came out to a fervent and relentless attack from an inspired Millfield. We held on and slowly started playing the ball down the line, rucking, picking up and moving slowly forward.

We introduced pace in the form of electric Sean, a move which changed the match resulting in a try form one end

Rugby Sevens

The Sevens Tournament season is the time to forget what may, or may not, have occurred during the XVs season and concentrate on a very different form of the game. Yes, most of the laws are the same and the ball is the same shape but not much more. Just because we may have lost at 1st XV level to Clayesmore, Hazlegrove, Taunton and others does not mean that we could not beat them in a sevens match, and so it proved Sevens is all about ‘Win the ball – Keep the ball’ and aim to set-up plenty of good ball to give to your quickest runners in space – then SUPPORT them. Every team looks for a ‘flier’, a player who can use his raw speed to score tries from inside his own 22. There may be more than one (Fred as well as Douglas, for example), but there is little that opponents can do to stop such an advantage if this sort of player is given the ball in space and then runs into even more space.

I have stressed that POSSESSION of the ball is the most important of all requirements in sevens and we were able to demonstrate this mindset twice with an exciting win for the senior team at our own tournament, indeed the first for

several years, to be followed by a stunning victory in a field of twenty schools by our elite Colts at Bryanston.

This tournament was the proverbial icing for this remarkable Colts team but it was their defensive skills, certainly six out of ten in the squad were outstanding in the tackle and the application of pressure, which proved better than any opponent.

They had seen this on screen and their season-long practising of many ‘sevens’ techniques held them in good stead as the stress mounted on the day. They were brilliantly ‘marshalled’ between matches

by Mr Elliott and enjoyed some wonderful moments in two of their tougher group matches before three more in the knockout stages, not only in try-scoring but in wrapping up opponents when the going got tough. It would be invidious to pick out individuals in such an outstanding squad performance.

Our senior seven did well to win the SPS Tournament in November after starting poorly and saving their best till last with a dream final against Hazlegrove but it was a gritty win over Taunton in the semis which at 14 – 12 was actually the real final. We picked the right team and stuck with them until Henry was ruled out with a minor injury and such was to

afflict us again in our first entry for several years into the National Tournament at Rosslyn Park. Yet here again we so nearly progressed through to the knock-out stages by simply playing the game tactically correctly, this time without one flier and an unfit second. But let us hope this is a new dawn for the Prep in its re-entry to the sevens circuit – a game which will always be exciting to watch and one which can be justly described as beautiful when played at its best.

GIRLS HOCKEY

1st Hockey The 1st VII had a competitive and challenging season. Led by Emily as Captain, they enjoyed early success in the tournament hosted by Canford in September, which helped them to settle as a squad and set themselves up well for the season ahead. In their regular weekly fixtures, good wins over local rivals Sherborne Girls and Leweston were then followed by victories against Hanford and Sandroyd. The team linked well together, with strong passes, good first touch control and some really confident shots on goal. Rose dominated the score sheet and Izzy became confident at slipping the ball past the goalie on the post.

Their most challenging matches were against Hazlegrove, Perrott Hill and Port Regis. However, the girls redeemed themselves in closely contested matches against Clayesmore (4-4), and Knighton

House (6-6), where the girls showed a huge level of character and resolve.

Sophie and Annabel worked tirelessly in defence.

The team were disappointed with their performance at the U13 IAPS tournament, but they then put on a great performance at the County Championships in February. Their overall results across the season were very balanced, with a playing record of played 12, won 5, lost 5, drew 2. All members of the squad worked hard throughout the hockey term, and should be congratulated on their determination.

2nd Hockey Working alongside the first team as one squad, the girls developed core skills such as passing, dribbling, control, tackling and shooting. These skills were then transferred into game situations and then into a match. A good technique was encouraged, as was an excellent attitude and work rate. The latter of these three was developed through the means of fitness training and by the end of the season; each girl had given a superb amount of effort.

As for competitive fixtures, the girl’s second team experienced a mixed season that included a good number of wins. Their season began slowly but each individual was determined to improve in all areas that were covered in training. Progress was evident during a triangular fixture at Leweston that also included Hanford. An excellent performance against Hanford followed by a convincing win against the hosts, Leweston completed a good afternoon of hockey. Poppy was simply outstanding in goal, receiving much praise from the sidelines. Constance and

Amelia W also performed well, laying down claims for a first team spot.

Despite losing a few games in the latter half of the season, progress both in training and during matches was clearly evident. Narrow losses against the Girls School and Castle Court were unfortunate but within them, there were glimpses of excellence. In fact the match against Castle Court was the highlight of the term.

Despite losing 1-0, this was a match that was exciting from start to finish and it was only a last minute goal that separated the teams. Constance C was once again outstanding and deservedly played the rest of the season in the first team.

As the season came to a close, the girls achieved a comfortable victory against the Park School within which every outfield player managed to score (Raissa, Mahiro, India, Amelia W, Genevieve and Thea). In fact, Genevieve (who started the season in defence), scored a hat trick. Well done to each girl for a very progressive season and good luck next season.

U11A Hockey The term started with fixtures against Perrott Hill, the u11A's were ready for a well fought game. Both teams were of equal skill level with Millie W and Hermoine especially noticeable for Sherborne. Unfortunate lapses in concentration and lack of fitness allowed Perrott Hill to make quick counter attacks and score 3 quick goals with an end score of 4-1.

A pattern of the teams 1st half was being made with them having a messy, unorganised 1st half, then making themselves work hard in 2nd half to get back in the game and the match against Leweston was no exception. In the 2nd half the ball was played wide and Alice L worked tirelessly to gain space and was rewarded with several good passes from Millie. An end result of 2-2.

On 19th September the game against Queens Taunton was always going to be tough, but the game turned into an even game with Sherborne determined to play well. Sherbonre attacked with strength from Millie and Hermoine, but this was often messy. In the 2nd half passing was more accurate and stronger leading to a final score of 2-2 draw.

Hanford game started in the same vain with Alice L and Millie again making space and finding good connections to both wings, a lead of only 2-1 at half time, after they upped their game gave a final score of 7-2.

Port Regis were unable to play their A team at the last minute due to illness so played their U10A for ½ a game, both teams were evenly matched but Sherborne were unable to utilise short corners which would have given them a strong lead, unfortunately an end score of 1-1.

Knighton was messy and a game of individuals, all with good skills but no team work. Knighton capitalised on this and score 3 quick goals finding Sherborne again clawing their way back to 4-2, Alice L was unfortunate to miss a couple of key opportunities.

Finally a match started with the girls completely focussed as a whole team, Sandroyd were taken off guard at the

start and Hermoine scored within 40 seconds. The ball was consistently distributed well using the whole pitch.

Emma was strong in defence giving a quick turn round ball feeding well back up the pitch.

The IAPS followed where the girls excelled themselves and resulted in qualifying for the national finals at Repton – see separate reports The term ended with matches against Dumpton who had come 4th at the Nationals. Both teams were intent on playing good hockey to finish the season. It was only due to a lapse in concentration that allowed Dumpton their 1st goal, and this was the downfall of the game for Sherborne with momentary lapses and Sherborne were

also unable to take advantage of any of their possession. The 4-1 score at half time, had included only 1 good goal. In the 2nd half the girls upped their game and continued to fight. Millie found some space to control midfield and feed both Alice’s on the wings and Hermoine scored the only Sherborne goal. Emma, Elsa and Tilly defended with courage and strength but were unable to prevent Dumpton for scoring another 3 goals.

The play from the girls has been continually improving and always with a sportsman attitude regardless of score and they have fought every game to the final whistle. All the positives from the season in their achievements and improvement was shown in reaching the Nationals for the 1st time.

IAP’s U11 National Finals - Repton After a short week of rushed plans and preparations, Sherborne were to set off for the journey to Repton. With a very excited bunch of girls, the trip would no doubt be an experience in itself. Arriving in good time, the girls were sorted and ready for a good nights rest before their big day ahead!

With nerves brewing from both players and coaches, the girls were set for their first match against Warwick. With no knowledge about this team at all, we went into this match with our eyes open... or so we thought. The girls dominated majority much of the possession and were able to spread the ball wide to Alice L who ran great lines up the wing.

Unfortunately, lapses in concentration and speed, meant that quick turnovers resulted in the opposition scoring. The first game ended in a 2-1 loss which proved to be rather disappointing as our girls looked to be the more skilful team.

So on we continued through our pool matches against The Downs School, Norwich and Forres Sandle Manor and unfortunately, the girls were unable to grasp a win. However, in these opening few matches, a mention must go to Alice L who was the outstanding player within pool play so a credit goes to her hard work.

Because of the results at hand, we were put into a round robin tournament with a number of other schools (also not in the top 8). By this stage, fatigue had really set in with the girls and play became rather lazy. We were unable to secure a win despite some great performances by both goalies, Constance and Naima. Perhaps luck was just not on our side on this day but overall the girls should all be proud of what they have achieved, not only qualifying for Nationals but throughout the entire season as well.

U11B Hockey The season started well against Perrott Hill with the girls showing guts and determination throughout the whole game. Although 1-0 down at half time they came back to a 2-2 draw. Mary Ryan read the game well and made good interception of passes to turn the game around.

Although the score against Taunton shows a convincing loss (6-1) this did not reflect the game at all with 2 evenly matched sides with the exception of one Taunton player. Constance made several good saves and kicked wide to Lexi and Barwaqo. Barwaqo was tireless in midfield with Georgina and Mary Ryan both strong in attack. Madeline was exceptional with her stickwork, ball control tackling and positional play.

Against Port Regis the girls were unfortunate as PR had already played half a game against the A team so were already fired up, everyone defended

tirelessly especially Barwaqo, Constance saved goal upon goal and was unlucky with 2 goals being very lucky deflections from the post. The final 4-0 score certainly again did not reflect the game.

Sherborne were very definitely the better team against Leweston but an early goal due to a lapse in concentration was the only goal of the game. Lexi and Barwaqo blocked any break that Leweston made quickly and Sherborne were constantly on the attack and were unfortunate not to score with Elsa and Mary Ryan creating huge amounts of space on the wings.

The Hanford match saw Sherborne fail to utilise the lack of experience in the opposition. What they lacked in skill was certainly made up for in determination and this was shown in the final 3-3 score.

Sherborne allowed themselves play Hanford standard rather than play at the superior level they were.

A tough match against a very well organised Knighton followed. Knighton had to work hard to score against a very strong defence with Lexi blocking most attempts at passing. Sherborne could not find the final pass to score a goal and Knighton managed a final score of 3-0 despite outstanding keeping from Naima.

Madeline and Lexi were relentless in defence and prevented the score margin being larger, Georgina although not used as much as she should have been , was always creating space for potential passes. Mary Ryan continually worked hard in attack and defence and was rewarded by being nominated as player of the match.

The game of the season came against Sandroyd, the girls were on fire from the 1st whistle and dominated the game.

Unfortunately luck was not on Sherbornes side and Charlotte hit the post several times. Sandroyd scored 2 very soft goals but Charlotte and Mary Ryan equalised for a 2-2 draw.

The season ended by travelling to Dumpton. The girls were expecting a hard match, especially without Niama and Georgina. Both sides agreed to play 6 aside, which allowed the girls to have a massive amount of space which allowed the game to be opened up and Sherborne were able to show their superiority as a team. Lexi was a star in goal and made numerous saves in the first half and allowed us to go into half time 2-1 up. Unfortunately lapses in concentration and Dumptons 2 main players showed their expertise and score 3 quick goals. Sherborne then picked up their game and focussed to score another goal. An excellent game to finish a very productive season.

The penultimate game of the season against Castle Court traditionally was never going to easy. Castle Court was more powerful but the actually play was evenly matches with Sherborne unlucky not to be able to finish when were in the D. Castle Court however were able to convert their hard work down the pitch into goals where Sherborne could not.

BOYS HOCKEY 1st Hockey

2nd XI Hockey

Sherborne Preparatory School First XI had a fairly inconsistent season but ending up playing some fantastic hockey and the team should be really proud of their progress throughout the course of the season. The improvements made by individuals throughout the team were impressive to see. The boys came up against some extremely good hockey teams and challenged to produce fantastic results. The team led

by George worked together as a unit, putting 100% commitment into every game. Patrick’s dominance in attack proved to be excessive for several teams to handle. IAP’s 7’s Tournament at Millfield demonstrated the overall quality on the pitch, with a number of stunning performances especially from Henry in goal. SPS narrowly missing out on Nationals but deserved so much more for the effort they put in. The team should be proud for their attitude, commitment and enthusiasm to work for one another and drive for selfimprovement. This was demonstrated throughout the whole team and was impressive to see.

As usual, membership of the 2nd XI hockey team is somewhat transitory in nature as promotions, demotions and, in 2013, snow all played their part in team selection. Inevitably results were mixed but there were encouraging victories recorded against Dumpton, Clayesmore and Sandroyd, along with a draw against Port Regis to look back on. Of more importance, however, was seeing the way in which players skills improved as the season progressed. In particular Joaquin, Fred and Islom, all of whom had never even played the game in January, become key members of the team by March. The team was ably captained by both Harry and, when injury intervened, Arthur.

Colts A Hockey This group was a joy and a privilege to coach with precious few blips, containing youngsters of exceptional talent and competitiveness whose standards are high and who are well suited already to be playing the full eleven-a-side format of the game. These players have come a long way over two successful hockey seasons, will continue to evolve and their game management skills have now become evident in abundance.

The coach drones on about failure to score goals from short corners, yet this team has excelled and it is perhaps no longer fair to describe them as rugby players with sticks in hand – they are better than that and are now sufficiently savvy to know when they are underperforming and more often when they are delivering the goods in fine style.

They have been brilliantly led from within and every player has improved significantly.

The undoubted highlight was the Canford Tournament which proved a long but ultimately triumphant day as we left with multiple badges of success, medals and trophies in our hands but without quite knowing how we managed it! To be fair, we may not have been the best team there but we gritted our teeth as only this group can, beat five other schools, won the day and took the plaudits.

We played some sublime hockey at times, slightly inconsistently perhaps, but like a smooth oaky claret – we saved the best till last. An ultra-chilled afternoon’s training two days before may have helped to seal this triumph, vital preparation in cruel conditions, but this

team has also learnt the value of layered clothing plus the need to keep the extremities warm between matches, principally ears and fingers.

The cast was largely unchanged and this consistency certainly helped to win six matches over the course of the term in addition to the achievement at Canford.

One can only look forward to seeing them at senior level in the seasons to come.

1st Netball The Senior Netball Squad was captained this year by Izzy, fast and dynamic in centre court. Rose and Emily were the key shooters and defence was dominated by Annabel, named Player of the Season. Sophie showed herself to be a versatile member of the team, able to play a variety of roles.

Early matches and tournaments brought disappointment, but was to be expected considering that key players were not always available. It was somewhat ironic how such a talented team often had to play without a full squad due to the number of scholarship days that the players were involved in.

Nevertheless, when the full team were available, Sherborne rose to the

occasion and played some exceptional netball. A narrow defeat by Perrott Hill, following a very competitive match, gave the girls the confidence they needed to finish the season on a flourish.

Tournament wins against Sandroyd and Leweston were followed with victories against Bruton School for Girls, a 9-8 victory at Sandroyd in the pouring rain and a win against Chilton Cantello.

From a player development perspective, all of the girls showed the ability to move their game forward. They each worked hard on their own key areas of play, and were keen to try new tactics and skills.

Amelia M became a regular player for the 1st team and the experience that this gave her will be invaluable for her next year.

2nd Netball Tilly did a great job as Captain of the 2nd VII this season, with her energy and enthusiasm always helping to put a positive spin on what could be a tough encpunter.

Raissa, Genevieve and Mahiro were other key players in this squad.

School for Girls. However, the team also enjoyed very competitive games against Sandroyd and Clayesmore School.

The team should be congratulated on the way that they learnt to work well as a team and support each other in their different roles.

Key victories included a 7-4 win against Sunninghill and a 12-5 win over Bruton

U11A Netball The term started with fixtures against Perrott Hill, the U11A's were ready for a well fought game. Both teams were of equal skill level with Millie W and Hermoine especially noticeable for Sherborne. Unfortunate lapses in concentration and lack of fitness allowed Perrott Hill to make quick counter attacks and score 3 quick goals with an end score of 4-1.

A pattern of the teams 1st half was being made with them having a messy, unorganised 1st half, then making themselves work hard in 2nd half to get back in the game and the match against Leweston was no exception. In the 2nd half the ball was played wide and Alice L worked tirelessly to gain space and was rewarded with several good passes from Millie. An end result of 2-2.

On 19th September the game against Queens Taunton was always going to be tough, but the game turned into an even game with Sherborne determined to play well. Sherbonre attacked with strength from Millie and Hermoine, but this was often messy. In the 2nd half passing was more accurate and stronger leading to a final score of 2-2 draw.

Hanford game started in the same vain with Alice L and Millie again making space and finding good connections to both wings, a lead of only 2-1 at half time, after they upped their game gave a final score of 7-2.

Port Regis were unable to play their A team at the last minute due to illness so played their U10A for ½ a game, both teams were evenly matched but Sherborne were unable to utilise short corners which would have given them a strong lead, unfortunately an end score of 1-1.

Knighton was messy and a game of individuals, all with good skills but no team work. Knighton capitalised on this and score 3 quick goals finding Sherborne again clawing their way back to 4-2, Alice L was unfortunate to miss a couple of key opportunities.

Finally a match started with the girls completely focussed as a whole team, Sandroyd were taken off guard at the

start and Hermoine scored within 40 seconds. The ball was consistently distributed well using the whole pitch.

Emma was strong in defence giving a quick turn round ball feeding well back up the pitch.

The IAPS followed where the girls excelled themselves and resulted in qualifying for the national finals at Repton – see separate reports The term ended with matches against Dumpton who had come 4th at the Nationals. Both teams were intent on playing good hockey to finish the season.

It was only due to a lapse in concentration that allowed Dumpton their 1st goal, and this was the downfall of the game for Sherborne with momentary lapses and Sherborne were also unable to take advantage of any of their possession. The 4-1 score at half time, had included only 1 good goal. In the 2nd half the girls upped their game and continued to fight. Millie found some space to control midfield and feed both Alice’s on the wings and Hermoine scored the only Sherborne goal. Emma, Elsa and Tilly defended with courage and strength but were unable to prevent Dumpton for scoring another 3 goals.

The play from the girls has been continually improving and always with a sportsman attitude regardless of score and they have fought every game to the final whistle. All the positives from the season in their achievements and improvement was shown in reaching the Nationals for the 1st time.

IAPs Netball National Final - Repton After a short week of rushed plans and preparations, Sherborne were to set off for the journey to Repton. With a very excited bunch of girls, the trip would no doubt be an experience in itself. Arriving in good time, the girls were sorted and ready for a good nights rest before their big day ahead!

With nerves brewing from both players and coaches, the girls were set for their first match against Warwick. With no knowledge about this team at all, we went into this match with our eyes open... or so we thought. The girls dominated majority much of the possession and were able to spread the ball wide to Alice L who ran great lines up the wing.

Unfortunately, lapses in concentration and speed, meant that quick turnovers resulted in the opposition scoring. The first game ended in a 2-1 loss which proved to be rather disappointing as our girls looked to be the more skilful team.

So on we continued through our pool matches against The Downs School, Norwich and Forres Sandle Manor and unfortunately, the girls were unable to grasp a win. However, in these opening few matches, a mention must go to Alice L who was the outstanding player within pool play so a credit goes to her hard work.

Because of the results at hand, we were put into a round robin tournament with a number of other schools (also not in the top 8). By this stage, fatigue had really set in with the girls and play became rather lazy. We were unable to secure a win despite some great performances by both goalies, Constance and Naima. Perhaps luck was just not on our side on this day but overall the girls should all be proud of what they have achieved, not only qualifying for Nationals but throughout the entire season as well.

U10 and U11 Netball This term the year 5 and 6 girls have concentrated on their special awareness and the need to not crowd the court.

Their basic passing and throwing skills have improved dramatically as has their footwork and mobility. Everyone has learnt the importance of defence work and this has been proven in the defensive circle more and more this season. The area that needs further consolidation next year will be within the attacking circle. Despite spending a great deal of time on shooting technique, unfortunately all too often it is this crucial element of the game is where the breakdown occurred.

The weather prevented matches getting started at the beginning of term and the girls became despondent, but when they did a pattern emerged throughout the term with unfortunate losses through this breakdown in the shooting. The attacks showed their thinking about creating space and positioning in the

circle and feeding into the circle and with both U10 and U11 Naima, Millie, Alice and Emma, Charlotte, Georgina, Alice P and Constance the results were the same with hard work and determination but without end result. The defence in both teams worked relentlessly, and although had times of making fabulous interceptions then did not take time to think before throwing the ball recklessly to the opposition. Every combination of players has worked well and tirelessly together, Elsa showing adaptability to any position, Barwaqo creating space and endless interceptions and the same with Maddy, Tilly and Huda, who all never gave up in their defensive work.

The girls have very strong foundations to build on for next year and with shooting as good as defence will be strong teams and the results of the matches have not reflected the determination that the girls have played with this season.

SWIMMING

Swimming this year has seen the introduction of a completely new programme and new coaching structure.

We began the year working from the bottom on the foundations of stroke skill and early season fitness, to moving forwards to where we are now in the latter stages of the year on race specific skills.

The opening gala of the year took place at Millfield Prep School where the u8, u9 and u10 swimmers got an opportunity to show their worth in this difficult opening fixture. The first senior fixture took place against Port Regis and Hazelgrove, a senior side with the likes of Rupert H and Douglas H highlighting the dominance of our strong boys’ team.

After the long Christmas break we continued our technical work with some focus on race specifics. The main area for improvement for most children is holding the water more efficiently and increasing the length and rate of stroke at speed.

opposition in a very tight gala against Hazelgrove; our Year 3s 4s and 5s swam excellently but unfortunately were beaten to the post by a more experienced side.

We were well into February now and we had begun an intensive period of training in preparation for IAPS Regional swimming round. The regional round took place at Millfield Senior School and the venue was sure to excite a few swimmers with the pool being Olympic size and temperature; fortunately we weren’t swimming the Olympic distance of 50m and the boom was at 25m.

Sherborne Prep had a strong selection of the fastest swimmers in the school from years 5-8, swimmers have to swim a seed time and be in ranked inside the top 16 in the country for their age and stroke to be in with a chance of qualification. To give you an idea there were 3000 swimmers vying to swim at the nationals which was cut down to a mere 300 for the finals held in Crawley at the K2 centre so qualification in itself is a great

achievement. The qualifiers for this years championships representing Sherborne Prep were, Jai T, Matt L, Rupert H and Tom H. The Trinity term began very quickly with a home gala against Taunton Prep; swimmers from years 5 and 6 competed for points against a strong Taunton side. Highlights from this round included dominance in butterfly from Jai and George, a PB from Matt L in breastroke and new PBs for Millie and Elsa in 50 freestyle. we also showed great strength again with our boys team dominating most relays as well as individual races.

Later on that week it was time for the IAPS National Championships which had certainly come around quickly. The main target meet for most schools on the IAPS listing this meet comprised of the fastest 16 for each event in the country. The heats began quickly and after fantastic swims from all of the boys they all qualified for the finals. Special mention to Matt L for an unbelievable PB in the heats taking him from 11th fastest to 3rd fastest for the final. In the finals Jai picked up a bronze and Rupert picked up a silver, unfortunately Matt and Tom dropped back but all of the boys made good PBS over the course of the day.

After a very short half term we had another junior gala, again against a strong Taunton prep opposition. Early dominance from the boys teams and individuals put us in good stead for the rest of the gala however a strong Taunton mustered and pipped us to the post; even with a boys canon win at the end. Special mentions to Jack M for a huge freestyle win and new Pb as well as Imogen for a new freestyle Pb as well as a girls 1st and 2nd in the year 3 event. The teams as a whole swam very well and were duly prepared for the house galas at the end of term.

I turn down Fenbrook lane and stand in front of my house.

I open the front door.

Clova rushes to meet me.

I stumble into the sitting room and plop down on a bean bag and then….zzzzzzzzzz.

CRICKET 1st A successful season for a team who really pulled together and thoroughly enjoyed each others company while playing some very entertaining and high level cricket. The season started at a canter with four wins on the bounce and some imperious batting performances, with Robbie and Tom P both recording 50’s and Patrick falling in the 40s on a few occasions. The early season highlight was an excellent win over Millfield where we managed to defend a modest total on our Lower Paddock with tight bowling and high intensity in the field.

The 1st XI grew very much as a team this season with noticeable improvements in all departments. Tom D developed into an effective and tough keeper, George S, Robbie, Tom H, Patrick and Harry M-Ash all produced match winning bowling spells. While batting Tom and Robbie consistently chipped in with the bat, with Patrick, Harry T and Harry M-Ash all scoring important runs. Most pleasing were vital contributions from Milo, Harry H, Tom D and Fred with the bat, often digging the side out of a sticky position.

Congratulations to a very fun and talented side, who always played the game hard, but fair and notable successes and wins.

2nd XI This year the 2nd XI worked on tactical awareness, technical maturity and decision making. We used nets to hone in our batting and bowling prowess and the middle to develop our fielding and batting awareness in game-like situations. Simulation and recreation were used to show the players which aspect they needed to improve. We had detailed team talks that gave the players themselves a huge opportunity to have an input in their game. We worked on the importance of the positive vibe within the team, discussing the effect of praise from your peers!

Hoare. Although batting was not our strength we saw some excellent innings on different matches from Beddow, Wylie, Crittall, Leach, MacIntosh, Cundy, and Wiltshere.

Our matches were spectacular affairs whether we were winning or losing! We saw some great catches from the likes of Leach, Beddow, Potel, Hickling, and

This team had a long bowling line up which included everyone besides our two specialist wicket keepers, Wiltshire and Potel. I enjoyed working with this group of boys and wish them well in their cricket careers!

3rd As with the 3rd XV rugby, earlier in the year, the 3rd XI cricket team this year has been notable for its overseas contingent.

What has been particularly pleasing has been the sheer enthusiasm that these newcomers have shown for this most English of pastimes! True, some of the bowling actions have been ‘interesting’ and the batting has not always followed the MCC coaching manual but bat has been placed firmly upon ball and wickets have been taken.

To date, three matches have been played and although three losses were recorded it has been gratifying to observe the improvement in skill level and boys’ understanding of the game.

The two return matches against the International College displayed this best of all with increasing numbers of runs being scored from the bat – nearly as many as ‘extras’ being given! The last match coming right down to the final 2

Equally gratifying - and at times frustrating as well - to the coaches involved, is seeing several players move up to the 3rd XI and beyond on merit, and remain there.

It is hoped that the boys will continue to develop their skills in years to come and at the same time have a better appreciation of the game whether as players or informed observers.

COLTS A There is always much to learn about this wonderful game at Colts level. As I write this we are half way through our term of cricket and so results cannot be meaningfully published. So far, the results have been mixed but there is no doubt the players are improving and learning the art of different forms of cricket. For example, we have played some games that have involved declaring and others that are timed between 20 and 25 overs.

I am delighted to report that two boys have already scored 50’s (Rob H and Matt L) and that the bowling and fielding unit is operating with more fluency and grit. I am sure that we can push on and play some great cricket between now and the end of the season. We recorded

a very good win away from home against Dumpton School, which should give the boys bags of confidence going forward. Lots to look forward to and, maybe, even the first Colt’s century at The Prep for a few years.

U11B The U11B played a training game on the second day back at School against Castle Court (who were in the same position) and put in a strong performance. This game was not about winning or losing but about gaining experience for both teams, some of which had never played hard ball/proper cricket before. SPS bowled well having won the toss and fielded first, it was accurate for the majority of the 20 overs and controlled. Arty, Felix (3), Alex and Sean all took wickets but everyone in the team bowled and did their bit. It was always going to be harder to bat on a damp wicket with a difficult outfield but the boys dug in and everyone 'got off the mark'. Notable batting performances came from Felix and Sam who were the only 2 players on either team to score a '4'. All in all, a positive start, lots to work on but more importantly lots to work with.

The next game was against Sandroyd at Sherborne Boys. Alex won the toss and soon SPS had Sandroyd in trouble as Benedict and Jesse shared 4 wickets and Arty also claimed a run out, after 5 overs they were 19-5

A sunny but blustery day at Taunton was next as Kings Hall entertained us. They won the toss and put us in. A much better batting performance saw us reach 111-2 off our 20 overs, Jamie W (26*), Alex (21) and Jesse (17*) were the main contributors. We restricted them to 56-8 off their 20 overs to win by 55 runs.

A tougher encounter at Perrott Hill was next, SPS won the toss and asked Perrott to bat on a good pitch. When we batted Jamie and Alex failed for the first time this season and it was left to Felix T (27), Jesse (26*) and Sam (33*) to steer us home to win by 7 wickets with 5 overs to go. Still undefeated!

After a wash out at Port Regis the boys returned to fixtures against a strong Taunton Prep team. Benedict (4-14) and Sean (2-16) ripped the guts out of their top order and they were backed up by Arty (1-14) and Felix C (2-9) as Taunton were all out for 54. Benedict 15* steered the ship home to win by 4 wickets. The undefeated season rolls on.

Our team resembled little of the one that was dominant in earlier games due, to

absentees, illness and selection of higher teams but they played with great spirit.

We batted with little discipline for the first time this season as the team capitulated against some excellent bowling and we were all out for 56 to lose by 96 runs.

The boys improved greatly at Dumpton with a convincing 54 run. SPS were the better team and after they had been put in they amassed 130-2 in their 20 overs, Jamie W (33*) and Sam Y (20*) being the main contributors. SPS then bowled with much better discipline and backed up with excellent fielding they restricted their opposition to 76-9 in their 20 overs.

The next match was away at Clayesmore, SPS batted first and made 161-8 off their 20 overs, Felix T (30*), Eddie (20*) and extras being the main contributors.

When SPS bowled,

Clayesmore started well and put us under pressure but gradually we made inroads into their line up with excellent fielding and more disciplined bowling as we restricted them to 115-8 off their 20 overs, Arty (1-15_, Ollie (1-35), Felix C (2-14) were the wicket takers. A good result – won by 46 runs.

A new fixture against Bournemouth Collegiate Prep saw the ‘glorious’ B team record an emphatic 9 wicket win. They won the toss and decided to bat first and tight bowling and energetic fielding by SPS saw them all out for 33. The wicket takers were Eddie (3-6), Will M (1-7), Felix C (1-5), Ollie (1-9) and Arty (3-1). SPS came out guns blazing after tea and knocked the runs off in 5.5 overs, Jamie W (13*) and Sam Y (11*) seeing them home.

Another great team performance and a great season.

COLTS C From the outset, the Colts C squad have been encouraged to play with enthusiasm and a good, positive attitude. They were reminded that there was no pressure on results as long as progress was being made and endeavour was on display. In this regard, each and every one of the team has been outstanding and deserves a lot of praise for the way that they have conducted themselves throughout the summer term.

We began the term with ‘incrediball’ pairs cricket against Sandroyd and then Perrott Hill. In the latter of the two, the boys recorded a convincing victory on the Lower Paddock. Jack G and Harry Mac both made double figures, while Ian K was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets.

In our third game, we quite rightly brought out a brand new hard ball against Clayesmore. Bowling first, we skittled our opposition out for 98. This included good bowling from Harry Mc and a brilliant run out by Dominic T. In our reply, our top order batsmen struggled to keep there wicket and at one point we were in real danger of losing the match.

Fortunately the in form pair of Victor and Jamie B restored the advantage. As the match was poised to end in our favour, the heavens opened and the match had to be abandoned.

Halfway through the season and the Colts C team were making significant progress in all areas of the game. We

played Taunton Prep and batted excellently. Victor scored 47 and shared an 80 partnership with Jamie B (31). In their reply, Taunton were fortunate and they eventually chased down the 118 target that we set them. Unfortunately most of their runs came from our inconsistent bowling, despite Ollie’s two wickets. After a good bowling session in training where everyone worked very hard to iron out technical issues, the boy’s faced Hazelgrove in a superb setting.

With a nearby brass band playing at a summer fete, each of the bowlers displayed amazing improvements in their performance. In fact, against Taunton we gave away over 50 extras. Against Hazelgrove this was somehow whittled down to single figures. Despite losing against our local rivals, the performance was a perfect step in the right direction.

The opposition coach also commented on the boy’s superb behaviour, stating that we were the best behaved team that they had played all season.

As the season approached its end, progress was still evident. Playing cricket for the first time, Ian K made remarkable improvements both with the bat and especially the ball. Jack G continued to be the team’s outstanding player and deservedly was awarded player of the season. Although the boys did not achieve the results that they deserved, they were an excellent group to coach and I thoroughly believe that each individual has the potential to be a very good cricketer. I wish all of the boys good luck in their future sporting endeavours.

ROUNDERS 1st and 2nd IX With fifteen girls in years 8 and 9, the rounders fixtures were flexible in terms of the size of teams. Each match was taylormade to the players available and so all of the girls enjoyed some excellent games and showed a high level of skill, understanding and tactical knowledge.

The 1st team began the season well, taking part in a festival at Port Regis. In a shortened innings version of the game, the team beat Port Regis and were only narrowly defeated by Knighton House and Hordle Walhampton, both on the last ball of the match.

They went on to win all of their other games, against The Park, Sunninghill and Knighton House. The teams’ only loss was against Dumpton, although a limited balls game would possibly have seen a much different result.

Throughout the season, the partnership between Bowler, Backstop and First-Base (Sophie, Rose and Emily) proved crucial and often won the matches.

For the 2nd IX, victories were few and far between, but the team were no less enthusiastic than with the 1sts. They were able to develop their tactical approach to the game and always worked hard when training alongside the senior team.

India, in particular, shows a lot of promise for next year, with some great batting figures, whilst Mahiro continues to score rounders with her ability to read the ball well and take her chances between the posts.

The team were rewarded for their hard work with a well-deserved win against the Park School.

U11 Apart from at the Clayesmore tournament that started the term, the U11 team have been unbeaten this term.

As the term has progressed they have used previous games to build on their faults and improve. After the tournament there was revenge for 2 teams who beat them, the first being Millfield. The girls did not disappoint and played the best rounders of the term. Their fielding was slick with accurate throwing and good tactical play, but it was the batting that was most impressive, with a steady stream of half rounders, coupled with full rounders from Devan - 1, Hermoine - 2, Mary Ryan - 2 and Elsa a magnificent 4 giving and overall win of 14 1/2 - 12 1/2.

The next revenge game was against Knighton House on a particularly miserable afternoon but the girls did not disappoint and they overcame the poor conditions and also playing on astro to win 10 - 7.

A triangular match against the Park and Leweston, allowed the girls to again show their superior skills. The game against The

Park was more training and coaching for them and Sherborne put under restrictions of play to enhance their tactical skills but still allowed a 5 1/2 - 2 1/2 win. Against Leweston however the game was more competitive and the team definitely showed their prowess in fielding but when batting Hermoine scored 2 from 3 balls and Mary Ryan 1 1/2 to give a 5-3 victory.

The match against Dumpton was the icing on the cake for the season, no one imagined that a win would be in order however Sherborne fielded consistently and thoughtfully for Dumptons 1st innings and they took time to settle into their batting, with Hermoine taking 2 very important catches, after 1st innings Sherborne were 5-4 1/2 up. In the 2nd innings fielding became slightly sloppy and thoughtless through excitement, but when batting although very risky Hermoine scored 2 rounders but the clincher came from Barwaqo to take the final score to 10 1/2 - 9. The whole team have gone from strength to strength this term and have shown adaptability and good skills in every match.

U10 U10 in this move from year 4 to year 5 the most significant changes to their play a in the tactical thinking and positional play and they have shown how each game needs different tactics and game setup. They have been unfortunate with their results and the score margins in most games have been minimal especially Knighton, Perrott Hill and Sunninghill were generally lost due to lapses in concentration so fielding became sloppy. However the win against

Leweston showed how they are capable of playing. Charlotte has shown consistent good all round play in both batting and fielding this term keeping the team level headed Maddy, Constance have shown great improvements in the fielding where they both are become more tactical in play and have good accurate passing. The whole year group have made huge development in their game and have good blocks to build on next year.

SAILING IAPs Sailing Regatta On Thursday 23rd May, the IAPS Sailing Regatta for the U11's took place at the National Sailing Academy at Weymouth.

Sherborne Prep entered two pairs of sailors in this age category, James Kidd and Alice Leach in one boat and Isaac Boswall and Will Brown in the other boat.

It was very windy and conditions were extremely tricky for the U11's. Lots of boats decided not to compete, and others launched and didn't make it to the start line!

Out of the 49 entries, James and Alice came 16th out of the 19 boats that completed the course, so won a place in the coveted Gold Fleet by lunchtime.

This year, the Silver race in the afternoon was run much more within the Harbour wall, for the children's safety and took the form of a shortened fun race with only 5 boats allowed on the water at any one time. There were a series of 5 heats, of 5 boats and one with 6 boats and then the final race of the winners of each heat. Will and Isaac took part in this but sadly weren't placed.

All 4 children did well to be sailing this year in challenging conditions.

OTHER SPORTS CROSS COUNTRY House Cross Country opened up the Cross Country programme and was furiously competed with Romans coming through victorious in unseasonably good weather.

Team relays at Clayesmore followed with Tom Doggrell and Patrick Reynolds running strongly before races at Sandroyd and Canford. Team and individual honours came thick and fast with notable results from Sam and Patrick Reynolds, Tom D, Jai Thompson and Alice Pope.

FOOTBALL A comprehensive football programme was enjoyed by the boys in the Lent term with six teams of all abilities gaining valuable playing experience. While there were mixed results in matches the progression shown by the boys in such a short period of time was commendable.

BIATHLON

GIRLS CRICKET

Pupils have enjoyed an every expanding Biathlon and Biathle programme with numerous individual and team success at the South West School Biathlon Championships and County Championships. Jai Thompson qualified for the National Biathlon Championships at Crystal Palace coming 2nd Nationally and George Case secured his place on the GB Biathlon team and recently came 2nd at the European Championships in Portugal.

Girls cricket continues to expand with U11 and U13 teams both enjoying a range of fixtures and tournaments. The U11’s came a credible 4th at a local tournament and the U13 girls won three of their four matches with great ball striking from Emily Wastell, Rose Taylor and Annabel Harris.

JUDO The Sherborne Prep Judo club continues to grow with fighters representing the school at the IAPS nationals and winning two back-to-back matches against Hazlegrove.

KARATE Karate fighters covered themselves with glory this year competing in the inaugural IAPS Nationals with distinction. All fighters came away with medals, with notable performances from Annabel Harris, Jordan Berry and Alex McGinty.

TENNIS

George Case trained again with the GB squad over the Lent term, before gaining a 2nd place in the South West Ski Championships, helping the team to a very credible 3rd place overall with Rory Gibbs and Sam Love both skiing well.

Sherborne Prep enjoyed tennis matches against Hazlegrove, Perrott Hill and All Hallows in the Trinity term with convincing wins over Hazlegrove and Perrott. Will Chesterman showed his class, while Joaquin Potel, Pietro Cren and Harry MAsh were all awarded Senior Colours.

U9 BOYS SPORTS CRICKET This has been a tough season but with a group of players that has improved matchby-match there is a lot of promise for the future. Sometimes, as at , we were overpowered but never has there been anything but a strong spirit. Two players have emerged as potential ‘keepers, Daniel and Joss and several of the younger players will be back next year, including Will and Jamie who have been a reliable opening pair, rarely flustered and both improving in their ability to play some shots. Both add something to the bowling, too. Max F and Jack T both have a good eye and Theo is emerging as a bowler of some promise.

Freddie is beginning to play some shots and his 24 against Port Regis stands out among the best innings of the season. Marcus has been the most consistent bowler, Fabian the quickest and Harry W is playing shots on both sides of the wicket to good effect. The best team performance came against Clayesmore and two other notable matches (not only for the contrast in weather) were an Under 8s team atLeweston and on the Lower Paddock against Warminster. The first was played in a walled garden in the sunshine, the second on an afternoon of rain, sun and even hail.

The defining feature of both games was the excellent spirit in which they were played.

The Bs should get a special mention for their fine performance against Port Regis. Thank you to all of the players who have worked hard to improve and to our supporters who bring cheer and comfort to every match.

HOCKEY AND FOOTBALL There is plenty of promise in this group and while they had some troubles along the way thrived under the expert eye of Mr Whigham who contained his rage when football intruded into his plans. The highlight of the soccer season was seeing both the A and B teams overturning earlyseason defeats against Perrott Hill with good teamwork and passing. In hockey, the A’s performance indoors at Clayesmore in a highly competitive match was the main highlight. Again, it was the performance as a team that really stood out. Thank you to all of the players, parents and all who have helped.

This season has seen a number of players make good progress with their skills and teamwork. Although on the small side, there was no lack of heart or courage in this squad – a pride in tackling was their hallmark. There were times when our best was just not enough and we were beaten by better teams who were more effective at winning the ball but never did the boys give up. For the Bs a win away at Sandroyd was perhaps the outstanding result of the season though

the and Dumptonmatches would run it close. For the As the second of two wins at Warminster to clinch the triangular tournament was the best moment – not just for the result but to see the team playing rugby to the best of their abilities.

The players and coaches are grateful for the wonderful support we have had this year from the touchlines – the matches this season have been wonderful occasions.

U9 GIRLS SPORTS HOCKEY The U9s have shown this season how much difference a year makes in learning a sport. The girls have shown more awareness on the pitch of others and of what is expected of them in each position. This tactical playing improvements goes hand in hand with their increased skill level and ability to hit the ball.

The season started with games against Leweston where Sherborne were definitely dominant in both tactical ability and also desire for the ball and won 2-1.

Against Port Regis the girls showed demonstrated and energy most especially in defence with Amelia and Hannah and were unlucky to lose 2-0 where the b team had a good draw of 0-0.

The defence had to work hard in the following 2 games against Perrott Hill and Saskia and Amelia had outstanding games and the breakdowns happened from little tackling from the attacks who lacked their usual flair and ended up losing 20. Then quickly followed by playing and extremely well drilled Castle Court, after the 1st quarter Sherborne were 2-0 up, but Castle Court found their feet and ended up 6-2 up, but Amelia again tackled until the last whistle and Florence T and Sarah attacked relentlessly.

The 2 losses were then made up for in an extremely dominant game by Sherborne over Clayesmore and came away with a 4-0 victory. After another loss to Perrott, Sherborne dominated their game over Knighton House, Amelia, Anna and Saskia were strong in defence and Hannah and Florence tireless in the centre with Sarah ending up scoring 2 goals and Florence 1. This game really showed how much everyone has improved throughout the term. This was followed up by another win against Leweston with a score of 3-1, Which left only the Sandroyd Tournament to end the term with. All the rival schools were in attendance, the day was bitterly cold and this affected the girls. The Tournament showed how much the girls have developed this term and how the work as a team and show skills and tactical knowledge.

NETBALL U9s played high 5 this year which gives a good all round development of the game with no one player favouring any position. Everyone rotates through attack and defence and is encouraged to develop all the skills necessary for the position as well as being completely inclusive for all players. Even though the matches did not produce winning results each game was a learning experience and one to build individual skills on.

ROUNDERS The year 3 girls have all embraced Rounders with vigour and enthusiasm this term. They have learnt how to throw and catch the ball properly which now needs continual practice to become an automatic skill. Again when batting they have learnt how to position themselves correctly and the timing of the ball onto the bat, in this they have all had a high success rate. Throughout the term the girls have played various variations on the game of rounders to enhance all these skills in different ways and they have all shown how much they have progressed this term in these games. They have played several matches which they have enjoyed and learnt from.

The year 4 girls have all shown how the move from year 3 to 4 increases confidence and also the ability to start thinking about and learning tactical play - this has been in all sports this year but with rounders ending the year it is more prevalent. The can all throw and catch correctly, competently and accurately, but it is the batting that is the major area of improvement with nearly everyone being more consistent in hitting but also with power. The matches they have played have not reflected the improvements that they have all made and with a little more thinking then the score margins would have been closer. All the matches were thoroughly enjoyed and used as a learning experience.

Reception learnt about healthy eating. They went on a trip to the local greengrocers in Sherborne to buy lots of fruit and vegetables to taste and try. They also had lots of fun doing a blind taste testing and found they liked some fruit and vegetables that they had not expected to like.

Reception were very proud of their huge Dinosaur Land painting. They organised themselves brilliantly and worked together as a team.

Following a treasure map to find some hidden treasure. We then had to share it out equally so there were no unhappy pirates!

YEAR ONE Year One have been a wonderful class and there are so many highlights of the year!

Our two trips to Gore Farm were firm favourites and the Halloween party provided by the Friends was enjoyed by all.

Breakfast with Santa thrilled them, particularly when Santa appeared on his sleigh complete with full size elf!

Our trip to was a wonderful way to consolidate their learning in their History of Transport topic and we managed to squash the whole class into a Cadillac!

Many of the children performed in the Pre-Prep mini-soloists concert and the Performing Arts Workshop and the talent show was hilarious!

They enjoyed performing in our two plays and have grown in confidence and ability through the year.

As a class they are a very talented: Oscar, Poppy, Vincent and Oliver Brown are our resident artists, Flora, Maia and Zara are our violinists, Ralph, George, Zara and Oliver Chappell have become rather proficient golfers, all the girls are wonderful dancers, and the whole class love sport.

They have been a brilliant class and I look forward to watching them develop as they progress through the school.

YEAR TWO Year 2 have been a wonderful class and have enjoyed an action packed fun filled year. They are now ready to tackle the challenges of the Prep in the coming academic year!

The children have relished the diverse range of topics studied over the year and have experienced wonderfully enriching trips ranging from the more traditional excursions to Stonehenge, Gore Farm and Bristol Aquarium to visiting the sustainable woodland community ‘Tinkers Bubble’ and making tasty pizzas at Tamburinos! A formidable force on the sports field, the children have amassed an impressive record in

competitive matches over the duration of the year, achieving sound victories in tag rugby, hockey and netball, excelling not only as individuals but as well rounded team players. They have all grown into responsible, caring, mature young people - too large now for the small pond of the Pre-Prep and ready to move on to fresh waters! A vibrant, enthusiastic and delightful bunch, the pupils of year 2 have been an utter joy to teach and I look forward to hearing about their future successes and adventures as they continue through the Prep.

YEAR 3 Year 3 have had the most fantastic year and have been an absolute delight to teach. Ms Gates and I are very proud of all of them for the wonderful progress that they have made. Here are some of their proudest moments and highlights of the year.

Amelie: “I am most proud of being in the Nativity Play because we all did so well as a team and it was so much fun. I am also very proud of my apology letter from Goldilocks to the Three Bears!

My highlight of the year was when we did the sponsored marathon for Comic Relief and raised lots of money.”

Christopher: “I am most proud of the stories that I have written in my English lessons.

The highlight of my year was the Roman

Feast and my favourite food was the ‘Salted Goat’s Cheese! I am really looking forward to learning about Volcanoes in Year 4 – it is going to be very exciting!”

Eloise: “I am most proud of learning all my lines by heart in the nativity and the story I wrote about a painting that came to life.

My highlight of the year was having a Roman Feast, eating ‘peacocks nails’ and visiting the Roman Baths.”

Imogen: “I am proud of the fact that I can write more quickly now and finish my work in lessons. The highlight of the year was having Mrs McGreal as my teacher and all the fun we had together, especially the trip to Stone Henge. In Year 4 I am looking forward to writing in pen and having more adventures.”

Jack M: “I am very proud of the work that I completed on the river journey. I tried to make my colouring as neat as possible. The highlight of my year was the Roman Feast where we ate lots of unusual food.”

Jack T: “I am proud of learning most of my times tables by heart. The highlight of Year 3 was the sponsored marathon and going fossil hunting at Charmouth and Lyme Regis. I am looking forward to being in the school play next year.”

Jamie: “I am most proud of the work I have completed on rivers. The highlight of my year was playing Rugby against Port Regis when I scored 14 try’s and we won 14 to 13!! I am most looking forward to having more responsibilities in year 4”.

Jocelyn: “I am most proud of my Viking project which I have researched independently and my story about the Pineapple Princess. The highlight of Year

3 was the Roman feast because we got to watch chariot racing and eat ostrich eggs.

I also really enjoyed the archaeological dig although it was a freezing cold day!”

Joss: “I am really proud of the progress that I have made with my handwriting.

The highlight of Year 3 was going fossil hunting at Charmouth. I found lots of ammonites and I got to keep them all!”

Madison: “I am most proud of the fairy tales that I have written in English this term. My highlight of the year has been having the best teacher ever and going on a brilliant trip to Bath”.

Max: “I am super proud of the sponsored marathon that we did. We raised £900.00 which is amazing! I am also really proud of the Maths work I have done this year.

The highlight this year has been the four trips that we have been on and having lovely Mrs McGreal as my teacher!”

because I used lots of adjectives and similes. The highlight of my year was going to Bath on the Roman Trip. In Year 4 I am most looking forward to learning about World War II in History”.

Tomasina: “I am very proud of the letter that I wrote to my friend Harriet and with the progress that I have made with my Maths. The highlight of my year was Miss Gates teaching me because I can always ask her questions if I am stuck!”

Tre: “I am proud of the progress that I have made with my writing and that most of my letters and numbers are now the right way around. I was really proud of the instructions I wrote about how to turn your headmaster into a troll! The highlight of the year was fossil hunting with Mrs McGreal and my friends.”

William: “I am very proud that I performed in front of the whole school twice this year. The highlight of year 3 was going to Maiden Castle because we had a battle on the castle ramparts!”

YEAR 4 I had not taught Year 4 for a while so it was a great joy to teach this small, creative and wonderful group of children. Children of this age are such good company! I have been exasperated and amused in equal measure over this last year but feel blessed with those that have been in this form.

They all have quite distinct personalities and it is our job, in partnership with the parents, to help them develop these personalities to the full. My mantra is always ‘independence, independence, independence!’. Even at this young age, if they can begin to realise that they should start thinking for themselves and make decisions on their own, then they will achieve great things.

There were many memorable moments throughout the year but a highlight has to be the two performances of Treasure Island. I thought the way the children sang, danced and performed that story was nothing short of amazing! It has been a delight to see their confidence grow from putting on such a production.

I have several roles to play in the busy life of the school but being able to fall back on my class teacher role has always been a treat with these children. I look forward to watching them grow and develop while they are with us at The Prep.

JAMES

We all made a massive paper chain at Christmas, it was huge and the most brilliant thing about it was that we all worked together to make it work. It took a lot of organisation and effort, but was well worth it. I also remember myself, jai and Sean coming third in the Clayesmore Cross Country relay, it was really tiring, but well worth it.

I loved the camping trip in the summer term, but was very tired the next day. I also really enjoy the House Hockey and Football and coming 3rd in the SW Schools Biathle Championship which involved a run, swim and another run.

FELIX I really enjoyed doing the Tempest with Miss T, I had to learn a lot of lines and it was exciting standing up in front of an audience. I also really enjoyed the camping experience on Lower paddock.

HARRY Highlights of my year were, playing goal for the Colts B hockey and making a huge volcano in science.

I also remember taking a wicket, bowled in for the C’s cricket and scoring a great goal in the football season.

CHARLOTTE My best personal achievement this year was that I worked hard on my swimming and knocked 4 seconds off my personal best in the 100 Individual Medley.

GEORGINA I really enjoyed being in the Tempest this year, our interpretation of it was fun and exciting to perform. I also thoroughly enjoyed taking part in School matches and I was very proud to pass my Grade 1 piano exam.

DOMINIC Highlights of my year were: Representing the Prep in Colts B rugby, the Year 5 camping trip and going down to Cornwall to take part in the Goblin electric car race, which was a huge event and great fun.

JAI I really enjoyed improving my sporty this year. I got 2nd in the GB Biathlon at Crystal Palace, 3rd in the Swimming Nationals for 25m Fly and then 1st in Long Jump, 100m and 200m at the Junior Wessex Athletics.

ALICE My highlights this year have been having classes and sport with my friends. I also enjoyed going to the hockey Nationals and playing man-hunt with all the Year 5’s.

ELLIOT I really enjoyed going camping this year because it was fun staying away from home. I liked playing cricket in the summer too and I think I played well.

RORY I am very proud of having my artwork in the exhibition this year. I loved the camping because Mr Elliot was so impressed with my tent!

LUIGI I am proud of being able to speak English better after being at Sherborne Prep School.

JAGO I am looking forward to Year 6 because I can tackle the Year 5s in rugby. I am really proud of all the books I have read this year and also the awesome goal I scored in football club.

HUDA I enjoyed the camping because Year 5 were all together and it was very, very fun.

I can’t wait to be a senior and meet my new teachers.

TILLY I particularly enjoyed creating holiday brochures in English and reading the Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett. This year I reached the finals of the IAPS tournament and was really proud.

SEAN I really love football and have enjoyed playing this year. I was also pleased to get my football colours.

JAMES I’ve enjoyed playing badminton on a Saturday morning and learning to do smashes. I also though the camping was great because we played ‘Capture the flag’.

EDDIE We made some great masks at Canford that were based on Theseus and the Minotaur. I’ve also enjoyed being in the best class with such nice friends.

BILLY I’m really proud of learning to do Algebra this year. I can’t wait to be in Year 6 so that I can go paintballing with the boarders. The camping was a lot of fun because we toasted marshmallows.

JESSE I am proud of my cricket and rugby playing this year, especially my two tries at the end of the rugby season. My trumpet playing has also improved.

Gargoyles eavesdropped, gaping at his solemn face. Spirits whispered about him. The mansion was wearing away and could have collapsed any minute.

Inside now, Mike heard a creak coming from upstairs but he carried on shuffling along the cracked oak floorboards like a little dormouse. He came up to a large room with nothing in it but one window, or that was what appeared it appeared to be. As he walked in cautiously, he carefully made his way to the window. Gazing out, he saw a tiny woman staring back with piercing blue eyes. All he could do was scream. Suddenly the front door slammed, part of the ceiling crumbled off and steps sprinted

At once Mike leapt down through the hole, his head throbbing. He suddenly felt himself tumbling down, further and further. There was nothing to stop him now, it was the end. Before he knew it, he landed in a great heap of pain and agony on a cold, crumbling stone floor. Splattered with dirt, he managed to heave himself up to stand. He was now under the house, something scampered along the floor and over his weary feet, making an unfamiliar sound.

There was no way out, he was trapped. With no sign of hope, he collapsed on the floor. Seeing double and with his heart sinking, he could now hear voices, whimpering spirits muttering words over and over again,'' Mistakes are never forgotten.� A never ending echo.

AN ENCHANTED FOREST As we walked through the forest the arms of the trees leaned towards us and threatened to reach out and grab us, then never let go. The ivy stretched across the path and tripped us. The path wound through the trees, sometimes doubling back on itself. The silence was eerie and as we crept along, I could swear that someone was watching us. As I looked ahead I saw a pair of eyes, large and as black as night.

I heard someone screaming. A mist was creeping in, threatening to swallow me up. Just before I lost consciousness I realised who was screaming. It was me.

ALICE I enjoyed the camping trip because we stayed up late and sang songs around the fire. We also enjoyed the challenge of putting the tent up together.

LEX I am really proud of playing a match with Year 6s this year and I am looking forward to being a senior next year.

HARRY Saturday school has been really fun this year and I have got a lot better at badminton and hockey. Next year, I am looking forward to being older in sport and playing against Year 5s.

CONSTANCE This year, we have become more independent and I like that. I am really proud to have my painting in the art exhibition and also getting junior colours for hockey.

YEAR 6 The saddest part of the wonderful 6B has been that I have not seen enough of them. They are a diverse bunch of boys, playful and even a tad naughty at times but there is no malice in them. There is toughness, certainly, but they tolerate the foibles and quirks of each other with barely a murmur. The lack of conflict in such a diverse group would hardly be a surprise were they wet and (to be frank) rather dull but they are not. There’s Finn, bright as a welding torch and prone to random acts of lunacy. There’s George C, an opponent to be feared in competition but so balanced and laid back off it.

Felix C gets away with almost anything with his charm; he is boisterous and a fellow of infinite jest. There’s Joe whose tongue is never still and who is rarely seen without a smile or Lego and, almost attached at the hip, George H, studious, bookish and thoroughly mischievous.

Jacob who works his socks off and looks positively angelic but gives the game away with dry quips.

William is a rumbustious fellow and another quick with the gags but behind the mask are many layers including rich seem of kindness. Arty’s world is wild, weird and wonderful while Felix T’s another Lego fiend, whose tackling in rugby is legendary and need I mention that he likes a joke? Victor is multi-lingual, dark and determined while Jamie gives his all – a golfer, cricketer, rugby player and more. Last in the alphabet but nulli secundus is Sam, quiet, thoughtful and gentle with a core of steel. We have also been glad to welcome Juan in the autumn, Miguel, whom we hope will return in September, and Valentin from Russia, all of whom have thrived in the controlled chaos of a form that has been mad as a barrel of monkeys yet simply the best.

What they have achieved already in their young lives is amazing. Now that Year 6 has drawn to a close, here is a little tit bit about each member of the class:

Elsa is always delightful, She’s always hard-working you’ll find, Always a good friend to others, She never fails to be kind!

Luca likes doing things his way, His smile is a cheeky grin, He’s often up to mischief with Benedict, But really he’s lovely within!

Devan looks after the others, She works hard and smiles all the time, Her giggle is really infectious, And that is the worst of her ‘crimes’!

William, he likes to argue, Though not as much as Sam R, His brain is as sharp as a razor, And there’s no doubt that he will go far!

Ian makes fabulous noises!

His impressions are impressive, it’s true, He may seem quiet at first, But he’ll soon win you over too!

Mary Ryan is always the diplomat, She should be in the peace-keeping corps, She can diffuse all disagreements, And make yummy cakes that we adore!

Alice can’t stop herself talking, She can’t help but say what’s on her mind, She’s bubbly and bright and a chatterbox, But marvellous fun you will find!

Sam L is brilliant with numbers, He also likes Lego, and sports, Lately he’s been making up mazes; He’s designed labyrinths of all sorts!

Benedict has his own way of doing things, He likes hunting anything he can find, If your humour is quirky and eccentric, You’d feel at home in Benedict’s mind!

Sam R likes being the best, There’s just no faulting his drive!

He’s a big fan of numbers especially, And in most environments he thrives!

David really loves penguins, They’re his favourite thing it is true He likes Lego and reading a good book, But it’s penguins he loves through and through!

Philipp has only just joined us, From Russia, that far-away land!

He really likes Tennis and sports, And his English is getting quite grand!

Hermione’s writing is fabulous, Her imagination just whirls away, She’s also amazing at Music and sports: She blows the competition away!

Toby is super at running, He likes sport of any kind, He’s also an excellent drummer, He’s a talented boy you will find!

So now you have met the whole class, I’ve no doubt, I’m sure you’ll agree, A more versatile bunch there isn’t, Never has been, and never will be!

6V this year was an amazing mixture of talent, character, personality and excitement. I have been very fortunate to witness the development of all my pupils, their successes and tribulations. YEAR 7 The academic year 20122013 has been a very productive one for the Year 7 scholarship form, 7H. Highlights have included the trip to Paris and the subsequent form assembly on this, and a ‘Cracking the Code’ day at Sherborne School and Sherborne School for Girls, which included enrichment work based around Maths, Languages, Geography and Science. All enjoyed the History trip to Bristol in the Lent Term, with many of the group spending hours and hours devising the historical interviews which they filmed on the day.

7H

Much of our effort this term has centred around the exams, which is perfectly understandable for a scholarship set, and we have spent a considerable amount of time exploring various ways to revise and putting these into practice. I am delighted with the performance of every last child in these exams, which yielded some of the highest paper averages I have seen from a form in Year 7. There has been time and space for some other pursuits besides work in the Trinity Term, however, with the pupils in 7H working largely independently to produce an extremely though-provoking

assembly on Nelson Mandela, centring on our half-termly theme of ‘perseverance’. The forthcoming Year 7 Geography field trip to Chesil Beach, postponed from earlier in the year, is another treat being anticipated with much excitement.

7H is a lively and exuberant form. They work best when they are stretched to the limits of their abilities and are always happier when working collaboratively and noisily than independently and in silence. All in all, they have had a most successful year at The Prep and they have made their form teacher very proud of them.

Milo has been a great member of the class. He has played well for the 2nd team cricket.

Tommy enjoyed seeing the stunning monuments on the French trip. He has been pleased with his improved marks this term.

Finn was player of the season for the 3rd team cricket. The highlight of the term for him was playing a match for the 1st team.

Tom is one of the sportiest members of the group. He was awarded colours for cross country and has played in the 1st team for every sport.

Ugo enjoyed boarding time and has loved the opportunity to make friends with new visitors. He has played many sports for the first time and feels he has made significant improvement this year.

Hector was pleased to achieve many grade As this term. The highlight of the year for him was visiting the Eiffel tower.

Harry MA enjoyed playing for the Rosslyn Park rugby Sevens. He has represented the school in the 1st team in all sports but prefers tennis and cricket.

Bob has enjoyed being part of a great class and making many good friends. He feels that his English has improved a great deal.

India is one of the most musical members of the group. She has may good friends and has made an outstanding effort during swimming galas this term.

Harry has enjoyed being part of this fabulous class. The highlight for him was

having an ice cream at the end of the trip to Chesil beach.

Leif enjoyed being with a great dorm on the trip to France. He is a confident and humorous member of the group and he is looking forward to being in Year Eight.

Mahiro is a confident and outgoing member of the class. She has made a great contribution to the boarding house and has many good friends.

James enjoyed the trip to Chesil beach this year. He was pleased with his assessment marks.

Sonia loved swimming in the sea on the trip to Chesil beach and has enjoyed Maths lessons this term.

Paulina loved the opportunity to dance in the boarders concert at the end of term. Her English has improved enormously since she came to the school.

This year the members of 7W were set the task of describing themselves in 35 words or less. Here we go!

I’m 13 and can speak two languages, French and English. I’m quite sporty and I play golf, judo and karate. I play the saxophone and the drums and I have just had an exam.

JACK FU: I like playing sports but I am not really tidy! I am kind and have lots of friends. I am not good at science but I like playing drums and bass and doing fencing.

YEAR 8 8M is a class of boys with many talents and identities. The boys have given me a special challenge in integration and working together which I am happy to see that they passed with flying colours. They helped Fred understand the game of rugby and play in the first team, Fred and Islom drove the love of football which the likes of Harry, Robbie, Guy and Arthur took to heavily resulting in numerous break time matches. Inaki and Ruslan led the academic challenge which Harry and the others took to with a lot of success. This year’s 8M have been a nice group who I believe will go on to do well in their senior schools. This is what each of them have to say about The Prep.

ARTHUR Year 3 – I enjoyed doing the Battle of Hastings on stage.

Year 4 – I started playing contact rugby.

Year 5 – Wizard of Oz, I played the flying monkey and going to Brenscombe Year 6 – I captained the A rugby team. I was player of the season for the U11Bs Year 7 – 1st rugby team, the French trip was fabulous.

Year 8 – Being in 8M, playing 1st team rugby and being named Player of the Season. Getting into Bryanston is the best experience of all!

INAKI

JOSEPH

I have played hockey, rugby and cricket at the Prep. I remember winning a match by 80 runs ! I enjoyed the trip to the Globe in London. I also contibuted pieces to the summer art exhibition. I was Head Boarder in the summer and enjoyed all the trips with the boarding house. I have made many friends here and will always remember The Prep fondly.

I have been in many plays and was in the 3rd team for many sports. I have done well in Latin. I hope that one day my house, the Romans will win the cup. I enjoyed the Globe trip, the Year 7 French trip and I am looking forward to a great time at Brenscombe.

FEDERICO I have enjoyed meeting new people and learning the English language and playing sports.

MILO My favourite memory over the years was when we were an unbeaten U10A RUGBY team in Year 5.

JOAQUIN I have enjoyed my lessons with Mrs Dowdell. The trip to the Globe in London was a nice experience. I am having loads of fun at the Prep school.

ELMAR I have, in my short stay here played cricket and tennis. I have enjoyed being in 8M and the lessons I have had with Mrs Rogerson. I have made many friends.

ROBBIE I have enjoyed being in 8M as a class. I have had a good time playing sports throughout the year, playing in the 2nds Rugby, 1st Hockey, and 1st Cricket.

Scoring 68 runs against Bournemouth CC was my highlight !

FRED I enjoyed the football club at Sherborne Prep. I like everyone in my class because they are all friendly and help me. I enjoyed playing 1st team rugby and sevens it was so much fun! My favourite teacher at the Prep is Mr Shepherd !

ISLOM I have only stayed at Sherborne Prep for one year in Year 8. My experience is that the school is good and the teachers are kind. I played rugby for the 3rd team. I also played hockey for the 3rd and 2nd teams. I had never played either of these sport before! I was in the 1st football team. I am currently in the 3rd cricket team and in the tennis team.

Robbie Frampton has been in my class for every year!

RUSLAN I have made loads of friends at the Prep.

I have been in many plays. The Prep is and will always be an important place for me.

At the end of an eventful year, it is useful to look back and sum up our achievements. When we began making lists, we were impressed by the many and varied talents that existed in 8R, so we decided to share them with you below.

8R

RAISSA’S favourite subject is Biology but she also enjoys Spanish. Her hobbies include hiking and reading novels, such as ‘Jane Eyre’, ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’ and ‘Pride and Prejudice.’ She has been captain of the 2nd hockey team. She was player of the match in her first rounders fixture in the 1st team. She has piano lessons and sings with the senior choir. She is a member of the drama Scholarship Group and played the parts of Gentleman Starkey in 'Peter Pan' followed by Ames in ‘Sherlock Holmes.’

She has had various responsibilities, including Head of Boarding, Council Representative, Head

of House, Librarian, student representative for the Health and Safety Committee. She hopes for a career in Archaeology and the Dramatic Arts.

THEA’S highest ever internal exam mark was 91% for R.E. This term she was awarded her drama colours. Her hobbies include Drama, Music, singing and playing the violin. She has played on various teams, including rounders, netball, hockey, cricket and athletics. She has reached grade 3 violin. She played Smee in ‘Peter Pan’, performed as the Speaker for the Rotary Youth Speaks competition, and lately performed as MacMurdo in ‘Sherlock Holmes.’ Her duties have included being house captain as well as a school prefect. She would like to be a vet when she is older.

PEDRO has only been with us a short while but was talented enough to have his work displayed at the Art Exhibition at the end of term. His favourite subject is History. His

hobbies include watching television, football and cricket. He claimed three wickets in one match for the 3rd Cricket team but also enjoys other sports such as swimming, tennis and athletics. He enjoys music and plays the flute. In the future he would like to be a diplomat.

THOMAS DICKSON also had his art selected for the school exhibition. He has made an excellent captain the 3rd Cricket team and managed 4 wickets in 1 match against Dumpton! He also played rugby for the 1st team. He enjoyed performing in class assemblies and made an excellent speaker on the theme of ‘Dyslexia’ for Rotary Youth Speaks competition.

MARIA has numerous favourite subjects, comprising Art, French, History, Literature, Chemistry and English. Pastimes include reading, horse-riding, writing books, cycling, painting and singing. She enjoys figure skating, cricket and playing the piano. A talented actress, she enjoyed taking part in our class assembly but at her school in Russia, she played the part of a puppy in Flock. Her future career preference would be fashion design.

The highlight of OSCAR’S year was winning the Alufed Design and Technology award and being invited to the House of Lords. His work was selected to be shown at the exhibition. Earlier he played full back for the 1st team and played for the 1st hockey team. He also performed well at cross country. On the stage he was Whibbles in Peter Pan. He made a confident proposer for Rotary Youth Speaks competition. He is a school council representative and has been a reliable prefect since September. He would like a career and as a designer or an architect.

ANDREA reads fantasy and adventure stories at astonishing speed! His favourite sport is football. He plays the flute. In the future he would like to study to be a lawyer.

TILLY’S

enjoys cycling and flying model planes. He has played 1st and the 2nd team cricket as well as for 1st hockey and 1st rugby teams. He has also attended swim squad training. He offered skilled technical support for green screen sequences of ‘Peter Pan’.

TOM’S favourite subject is Science. His art was selected for the exhibition. He won school colours for swimming. He played lock in the 1st team for rugby, he played 1st team football, cricket and swam at the IAPS Nationals. He played drums in the school concert. He has been a

TRAVIS is a keen motorcyclist on his Yamaha 100CC. He played hooker in the school 2nd team for rugby as well as playing in the 2nd hockey team and 3rd cricket team. His future aim is to be world speedway champion.

GEORGE enjoys sport in his free time, such as long distance cycling and playing tennis at Sutton Montis club. He plays 1st XV rugby as no 7 flanker, he played 1st team hockey, gained nine wickets for our cricket 1st team this term and came third in the hurdles at Wessex athletics. He has made a responsible eco representative. He would either like to be an account, a vet or a doctor.

ALENA enjoys art, music, P.E. and history. Her varied hobbies include acrobatics, painting and drawing. During her half term with us, she has enjoyed playing cricket. She would like to be a doctor in the future.

DAN has many sporting hobbies. He is in the Sherborne tennis club squad, he enjoys skiing and has won numerous medals for tournaments at Sherbrone Golf Club. At school he played prop for the rugby 2nd team, 2nd team Hockey, 2nd team cricket with 4 wickets in one game. He has reached grade 2 saxophone. He made a skilled lighting and sound technician for this year’s school productions. He has made a reliable school council and eco representative. Dan has aspirations to be a pilot, vet or a doctor.

is a very popular member of 8S, excelling in academic studies and awarded a Music scholarship and a Knights Maths award to Bruton School for Girls. She is a keen photographer and musician. By Archie.

HENRY was the last to sit exams and worked very hard for them. He won drama colours for playing Peter Pan, gained colours in the Firsts for rugby and hockey, and was captain of football. He played clarinet in the orchestra and jazz band and was an excellent Head boy.

JORDAN

is a very talented musician, playing piano, violin and singing soprano and tenor. He is a budding electronic musician and received a music exhibition from Sherborne School. He was in the firsts cross country relay. He is a very humorous member of the class and very good with computers. By Patrick.

KOFI started the year as Head Boy and played Mr Darling in the senior play and became Head Boarder. He achieved the Headmaster’s award to Dauntsey’s, is a

PATRICK worked very hard to achieve his Academic and Honorary Sports Scholarships to Sherborne. He was Captain of Rugby (winning colours) and has excelled in cross country and athletics. He earned his drama colours playing Captain Hook in Peter Pan. He was a Prefect and Player of the Season for Hockey. By Sophie.

has had many successes: Head Girl; a place at Cheltenham Ladies; player of the season in hockey; hockey and netball colours; captain of cricket

greatest success was playing Wendy in Peter Pan. She attended many meets with the athletics team and was awarded colours for netball and drama.

She has been a very reliable prefect and has been an excellent captain of netball.

She is looking forward to going to Canford in September. By Joshua

KRISTINA joined us for the last four weeks of term. She is a very talented artist and made the most of the art room. She also enjoyed learning to play rounders.

YEAR 8 TRIP TO BRENSCOMBE

From Monday 17th June to Friday 21st June, the Year 8 leavers went on a trip to Brenscombe Outdoor Centre, near Corfe Castle.

After excitedly leaving school at 9 o’clock, we soon arrived at Corfe Castle where we stopped and had an interesting tour, afterwards eating lunch in a field of friendly cows.

Having finished lunch we drove on to the centre where we took part in some Ice Breakers, which included a tug of war and a couple of fun relays, one involving water. After these we had some time to settle in before dinner at 7.45.

The next morning everyone woke up and eagerly got ready for the first day of activities, which included archery, air rifle shooting and initiative challenges. In the morning and afternoon group one went off to do abseiling and climbing at Dancing Ledge, while group two went for camp craft in the woods.

Everyone in group one daringly abseiled down Dancing Ledge and managed to climb up again, generating a real sense of achievement, while the people doing camp craft made fires and cooked home-made bread. Afterwards a shelter building competition was held in two teams.

Throughout the rest of the week there was one birthday on Wednesday, Thea’s, which was celebrated at dinner with a delicious cake that the catering staff had made and later in the evening, with cake and sweets in the girls’ room, after coming back from the beach.

The two groups swapped over on Wednesday morning. Group one did camp craft and group two did abseiling and climbing.

Everyone had a go at canoeing and raft building in Wareham, where if you didn’t capsize by yourself, you found yourself being capsized by the instructor without warning!

An exciting low and high ropes course was attempted and enjoyed by everyone.

Another team challenge involved a catapult being built to fire a ball at a target. A delicious barbecue was held in the sun, followed by a disco on Thursday night. Finally on Friday, we took part in an exhilarating morning of power boating, where everyone had the opportunity to drive. Many people saw this as a highlight of the week.

At the end of the week, everyone was exhausted and happy, but sad to be leaving.

THE YEAR IN BOTH ACREMAN AND NETHERTON HAS BEEN AS BUSY, AS POSITIVE AND AS ENJOYABLE AS EVER. PERHAPS EVEN MORE SO.

A YEAR IN THE BOARDING HOUSES NETHERTON (GIRLS) & ACREMAN (BOYS)

We now have a veritable United Nations mix of local and foreign students each adding their own unique character to what makes up this vital part of Sherborne Prep School.

The Staff are fortunate to witness this eclectic mix of ages and nationalities grow daily in independence as they become (mostly) increasingly responsible for their own timetables, possessions, dormitories and general organisation.

They grow too in their ability live, learn and socialise with not only their peers but all of those of varying ages living in close proximity.

None of this would be possible without the amazing service and dedication of the Staff who have huge input on a daily basis. In December we farewelled House Parent (Netherton) Miss Lisa Ford and our 3 resident GAP students Anlo van Deventer, Sophie Smith and Tom Howard, all of whom grew as fond of the Boarders, as the Boarders and Staff did of them. While certainly missed, it was only a matter of weeks before I collected 3 replacements from Heathrow. Yes – more Kiwis, although this time the team of Emma Brown, Ella Snedden and Henry Smit was augmented by Sri-Lanken, Benjamin Aluwihare.

Internationalism is strong and well here! They have established themselves equally as well as their predecessors and already form an intrinsic part of the team.

Mrs Brenda Ray joined us as Houseparent in Netherton in January, quickly establishing herself and imparting her love and care and

attention on both Netherton and the fortunate girls who reside there. Miss Lucy Wallington ably assists in Netherton on a regular basis.

Our Matrons, Mrs Kate Fow, Mrs Lindsey Shardlow continue to offer wonderful support and loving attention, assisted in no small way by the regular visits of Dr Matthew Grist.

Their collective dedication and expertise has seen all Boarders, day pupils and Staff remain relatively healthy throughout the year.

Sunday Activities, recently the responsibility of Mrs Ray, with all of the associated organisational aspects - bookings, the Register, the mountain of Risk Management documentation, the transportation details and needless to say, the last minute alteration of plans by a few, continue to be well received and frequently the envy of day pupils.

Some of whom have chosen to join us on occasions. The photographs here offer some testament to the enjoyment had on outings to such destinations as Paintballing, Virtual

Warfare, Ten Pin Bowling, the cinema, Murder Mystery Trail, Quad biking, go-karting and the inevitable shopping expeditions. Our sincere thanks Brenda, and to Mr Frank Bridgeman-Sutton who not only, as Assistant House Parent and full-time teacher also manages to find the energy and time to be fully involved every weekend.

The Boarders have been well supported and represented by our Head Boarders; Thomas & Raissa, Kofi & Sophie and Inaki & Tilly who were all excellent in their roles. Also offering wonderful support were the many SPS Staff who freely gave us their time on a Sunday.

Boarding at Sherborne Prep is and will hopefully remain a wonderful and appropriate combination of trials and tribulations. By witnessing or actually experiencing both, these fortunate youngsters will grow in a manner that some, sadly, will perhaps never experience. The Year 8s and Mr Aluwihare who are soon to depart will take with them many happy memories, many new friends and acquaintances and the increased confidence to take on anything they choose or that life may throw at them. We can wish nor plan for little more.

I sincerely thank the boarders and the Staff who have assisted Mrs Ray and me throughout the year and all others who do so much to make this place a great place to live, work and play.
