The Annual Fund 2014-15 We are very proud of your support of the Annual Fund in enriching and, in some cases, changing the lives of Sherborne’s boys. Over the next few pages you will see details of the projects that have been successful to date, and we hope that you will continue to support them.
Many have generously supported the Foundation over the last sixteen years, with 28% of Old Shirburnians giving anything from £15 per month to £1 million. This percentage is one of the highest participation rates in the independent schools sector and OS should be justly proud of their generosity. We hope that you will support the Annual Fund again this year, if you have done so in the past, and that you will also encourage your friends and contemporaries to join in with our efforts.
This year, we would like to encourage just 143 additional donors (2% of the Old Shirburnians we are in contact with) to participate in the Annual Fund and help us to reach the point whereby 30% of our alumni are giving.
This will be a notable achievement that will make an important difference to Sherborne’s boys.
Just 143 additional supporters giving just £15 per month, could raise a further £32,175 and, in the coming year, fund: • A Foundation Fellow for 2015-16 Academic Year • The entire Science Festival – Michaelmas Term 2015 • One year’s bursary for another deserving boy

“I found that the wide variety of topics available to people was important as there was something for everybody. The opportunity to hear from people who talked to us about specifically what they do for a living was a rare occasion and broadened our knowledge of that field of work.” Fifth Former “To have such big names in the world of poetry read their own work is a rare occurrence, and it was refreshing to simply enjoy the poetry away from the classroom setting.” Sixth Former
Project aim:
To create small two-day academic festivals, attracting big name speakers and raising both the academic enrichment and the profile of the School. The Sherborne Sessions 2014 which will be open to all students in the town, will include multi-award winning author, Evie Wyld, comedy writer, James Carey (Miranda), and the poet, Christopher Reid. A bumper science festival is in the planning stages for 2015, subject to funding.

“Mr Weylandt (Foundation Fellow 2012-13) ceaselessly helped and pushed everyone around him to greater things in every aspect. He was known by us for his help with the Wildman debating society, establishing the first programming club and furthermore, being such a great character around Abbey House. He was always willing to stop and talk about anything.” Rory McMillan (U6, b), Perry Jenner (U6, b) and Hugo Brommell (U6, b)
Project aim:
To give boys the opportunity to learn from exceptionally bright recent Princeton graduates. In 2014-15, we welcome Bryan Pannill and Ben Kalinsky (pictured) to Sherborne as our Foundation Fellows.

“The very successful Inspirational Speaker Programme continued this academic year; bringing with it a renewed, exciting and diverse range of talks. This year we were lucky to receive presentations from people in a huge variety of different professions, several of whom were Old Shirburnians. The grand tales of global exploration (my personal favourites) left the School community filled with wanderlust, opening our eyes to the magnificent world that lies beyond Sherborne.
Similarly talks on matters of global political and ethical importance were excellent seeds for debate; remaining matters of intense discussion within the School community long after the speaker had left. Most importantly, all of the speakers left us wiser to the diversity of incredible opportunities that lie beyond Sherborne, many of which we would not have known about otherwise. We are looking forward to hearing more this year.” Rory McMillan (U6, b) Project aim:
To provide opportunities for the boys to hear from a variety of speakers to enhance their knowledge beyond the classroom and broaden their world view.

The boys say “When I came to Sherborne in 2012 I was unaware, as all bursary recipients are, that it was through the support of Foundation supporters. When I recently found out, I can only say I was incredibly grateful. My two years at Sherborne on a Foundation bursary has given me the opportunity to reach for higher horizons. My time at Sherborne has not only led to new and, hopefully, lifelong friendships but has also allowed me to achieve my ambition of a place at medical school. It has also offered me the chance to significantly develop in sport, and means that I have the great fortune of being a Sports Scholar at University. At Sherborne I played for the 1st XV and was coached by some brilliant staff. I was also selected to play for the England under 18’s squad and hope to carry on progressing my rugby at University. I enjoyed Sherborne immensely from the wide and diverse opportunities it offered me, to the academic rigour and the great friendships I made there.” Richard Galloway (m, 2014)
Widening Access Project aim:
To support boys who would not otherwise be able to attend Sherborne, and to support current pupils who have fallen on hard times during their time at the School and whom without assistance would have to leave. Funding is also sought for all-round Scholarships to promote broadly talented boys.
£70,000 for a Sixth Form bursary boy to board, with some additional expenses covered, for the full two years. Scholarships are £4,000 per annum.

“I would just like to thank you for the support you provided me in order that I could attend the Swing Band trip to Barbados this summer, it was an amazing experience and the first time that I had left Europe. I was astounded by the beauty of the island and the rich culture that fills it making it a great place for the band to perform the Jazz and Swing repertoire which was so well received. Robert Ham (U6, e)
Trav e l and Tour Bursary F und

The boys say “Alex Cox was my water polo coach for the first 2 years of my time at Sherborne. He was one of the best coaches I have ever had at any sport I have ever played….I was so bad at the sport when I started that I almost didn’t go back, but the way that Alex communicated with the team, and how he was always happy and in a good mood changed my mind….When I told him that I wanted to carry water polo to a higher level than just school tournaments he encouraged me and pushed me harder. I now play County Water Polo for Dorset.” Hugo Houlton (L6, d)
£45,000 Project aim:
To develop coaching levels in all sports, but mainly those that are not currently supported through existing budgets, and also to enhance areas of coaching at the higher levels.
