It is very hard to pick a highlight from what has been such a brilliant term - but as the photos later in this review show, the Y6 and Y7 productions of Matilda were such wonderful occasions. The acting, singing and dancing were of such a high standard, and the show itself so utterly enjoyable, that I regularly had to remind myself we were watching 10-12 year old children. Remarkable! What I think is even more important to acknowledge however is the inclusiveness of the performing arts here at Dumpton. This was not a hand-picked cast of keen actors: this was every single child in Y6 and Y7, and every single one of them had their chance to shine.

This inclusivity - and the ethos where everyone tries everything - is integral to life at Dumpton. It’s for this reason that Mr Randle, Mrs Clemmitt and the sport staff work so hard to get every child playing sport each day, and representing the school in a fixture each week. It’s for this reason that though Netball and Hockey might have been our major sports this term, pupils have represented the school at Cross Country, Swimming, Biathlon, as well as Horse Riding and even Skiing!

It’s for this reason that we had Year 2 playing their first ever fixtures (the first in the history of Dumpton!) with the inaugural Spring House Cup, and that the whole school performed on one memorable afternoon for the Spring Spectacular (even Nursery!), and that the Global Citizenship Day brought the whole school together to undertake a range of activities to make the world we live in a better place.

This ‘everyone tries everything’ ethos at Dumpton is so crucial. We want every child to fulfil their potential, and being immersed from a young age in an enthusiastic, ‘can do’ culture where they experience so many opportunities to learn about themselves and grow. Sometimes, it is all too easy in life to say no to opportunities, and to stay in our comfort zones – but we risk never fulfilling our potential if we do. Hopefully, as this review shows, life at Dumpton gives children the confidence to aim high, to try new things, to participate, and, by doing so, to realise that they are all capable of remarkable things. To realise that you really can because you think you can....

Finally, the scholarships at the top end of the school are a great example of the ‘aim high’ ethos at Dumpton. We’re incredibly really proud of our pupils. Equally, in a school that prizes itself on providing a broad and balanced education, the record number of academic scholarships this year is a wonderful endorsement of our approach.

My thanks go to our wonderful staff team as ever who ‘set the weather’ in the school each day - from teaching staff, to support staff, we are very lucky to have them.

Developing well-informed, responsible, genuinely caring and pro-active global citizens is of prime importance at Dumpton.

Work and initiatives are ongoing for all our pupils and our Spring Global Citizenship Day brings the whole school together to build and focus on key areas including plastic reduction, water security, Fairtrade and its impact, working alongside the local council to regenerate areas of greenspace locally, a cycling challenge to raise money for COOP Africa and a detailed look into the problems associated with the fast fashion Industry. Pupils are fully involved and take the lead You can because you think you can. We come together at the end of the day to share our findings with the whole of the school.

Performing Arts - Year 6 Matilda

‘It was an absolute pleasure to work with Year 6 and 7 on Matilda Jnr this spring.

Both casts did a magnificent job of bringing this ambitious and musically challenging show to life. Principal actors

worked hard on crafting their characters, wholly supported by a strong chorus who sang and danced their hearts out.

The icing on the Bruce Bogtrotter cake was the addition of Fraser and Josh DLH

in Year 8 who lead by example, committing to working on lights and sound for both shows.’
