Welcome to this month’s bumper page issue and thank you to all our advertisers for their continuing support!

It’s the merry month of May and with the number of festivals, fetes and fayres taking place this month and next, we shall all have an excuse to get outside and make the most of some much appreciated sunshine! If you enter the competition you may be lucky and win a Family Ticket to Sherborne’s Country Fair, taking place at the end of May. And you know what – even if it is raining outside, The Conduit will keep you entertained with its unique mix of articles spanning everything from antiques to gardening to health and wellbeing. The Cinnamon Trust Needs Volunteers in Sherborne The Cinnamon Trust is the national charity whose wonderful volunteers help people over retirement age and those in the latter stages of a terminal illness by offering all kinds of pet care. We are trying to find some dog walking support for a resident of Sherborne and their lovely dog Lola an 11 year old Cocker Spaniel who would love to go for a good walk.

What happens if illness, injury or just the fact that we all get older eventually affects our ability to look after our four legged companions? A large number of elderly or ill pet owners become very worried about their ability to care for their pets, feeling that their only option is to rehome them, this is where our national network of dedicated volunteers step in to offer support enabling them to stay together.

We’ll walk the dog for a housebound owner, we’ll foster pets when owners need hospital care, we’ll fetch the cat food, even clean out the bird cage or litter trays.

All volunteers help in the ways that are most appropriate to them. Teams take it in turn to visit housebound owners to take the dog for a walk, volunteers foster pets as one of their family when owners face a spell in hospital and take pets to the vet.

Local historian, Luke Mouland, explores how Sherborne and the surrounding villages (including Chetnole, Holnest, Leweston and Yetminster) played a pivotal role in nursing wounded soldiers during the First World War; a contribution which was sustained largely through the efforts of female voluntary labour.

The town was not only the first in Dorset to register a Voluntary Aid Detachment, but also pioneered the use of open air treatment for victims suffering from gas poisoning and septic wounds.

Sherborne is an important contribution in this regard and will be brought to life through the artefacts, photographs and personal stories cared for in the collections at Sherborne Museum.

We Are Currently Loving…The Night Visitor by Lucy Atkins £7.99 I met the author when we were judging a book prize sponsored by a certain coffee company and I asked her what she had in the pipeline. She modestly mentioned The Night Visitor, so doing my duty as a polite bookseller I said “send me a copy, I would love to read it”, duty done we got on with the judging. I am so glad I did - this book is utterly compelling and I stayed up well past my bedtime loving it.

The Night Visitor Olivia Sweetman is a successful and attractive History professor who has started making a name for herself on television (think Lucy Worsley). She is struggling to maintain her professional life whilst managing her home life with her husband and three children.

Vivian is the socially awkward and solitary housekeeper at Ileford Manor, where she is caretaker of the house and its possessions whilst her employer is in a care home.

One day a flyer falls through Olivia’s letterbox which promises the chance to see the previously undiscovered diary of Annabel Burley, one of the first women surgeons, at Ileford Manor. Olivia visits Ileford where she reads the diary of Annabel, a pioneer of women in the medical world and more shockingly, a self confessed murderess.

Olivia cannot pass up this chance to write a book about Annabel, and in order to get permission to use the diary, Olivia befriends Vivian and enlists her as a research assistant for the book, a job Vivian is remarkably capable at.

What follows is a fabulous character study of the two women, the secrets they are keeping and the lengths to which they will go to get what they want. Vivian is a particularly complex character and her personality resonates through every page she appears on. Olivia is a flawed but likeable and sympathetic protagonist.

Lucy Atkins has created, in Vivian Tester, one of the most vivid, memorable and menacing characters. She’s brilliant - deluded, obsessed and scarily believable - and is the perfect adversary for the ambitious main character, historian Olivia. C L Taylor Author

The famous Earl who is a well-known historian, but better known as the brother of Princess Diana, will be talking about and then signing his new book To Catch a King: Charles 11’s Great Escape.

The book is the true story of one of the greatest escapes in British history– after defeat at the battle of Worcester the young Charles 11 fled for his life with a vast price on his head to escape the men who had killed his father and wanted him – and all traces of the monarchy – dead. Charles Spencer was educated at Eton College and obtained his degree in Modern History at Magdalen College, Oxford. By Linda Piggott-Vijeh As an avid reader, I need no encouragement to get stuck into a good book, but I was shocked to discover recently that in the UK less than one in four people have read a book in the last 12 months. Thankfully, the popularity of local literary festivals, along with World Book Day, is helping to turn the tide.

The first Ilminster Literary Festival, in 2016 proved to be a great success. Now in its third year, with a little tweaking, it is heartening to see that authors are now chomping at the bit to find a place on the programme.

As we gear ourselves up for this year’s Ilminster Literary Festival, (30th May - 8th June), we know that the presence of wellestablished literary figures helps to draw in the crowds, but it also provides a platform for up and coming authors to showcase their latest literary masterpiece.

When it comes to gaining the attention of a local audience across the full spectrum of ages and interests, the BBC’s mission statement to ‘Inform, Educate and Entertain’, is most pertinent.

That, with audience participation thrown into the mix, and a bevvy and a bite, is surely the perfect recipe for a successful event. The positive comments from the last two literary festivals bears this out. It is a process of engagement with the audience and authors alike, responding to their observations; selecting appropriate venues can also play a key part in the outcome.

When attending an event or activity myself I feel that if in exchange for giving up my time, and money, I come away with having enjoyed myself whilst learning something new then it is time well spent. We are all inclined to repeat something if the experience has been pleasurable.

Joyce tied up the bag of clothes and wrote CHARITY in large black letters.

‘I still have a little bit to do but it won’t take me long, it feels like I have given most of it away,’ she answered, forcing as bright a smile as she could for the Skype camera.

Francis paused, ‘you know, dad would be so pleased, he would have loved the bungalow.’

Joyce knew he was trying to help.

She did want to go, she wanted to see her grandson more and be there to see him grow up, but something inside her just didn’t feel ready to move away.

She had lived in the seaside town of Swannow almost all of her life.

‘I know he would darling.

Now you go and read Harry a bedtime story, tell him I can’t wait to see him at the

weekend.’

‘Ok mum, love you lots.’

Joyce heaved the bag over her shoulder and carried it up the street, regretting that she had refused Emily’s offer of collecting the last donation in her car.

The shop was less than a ten-minute walk away, but the heat of the sun and the surprising weight of the clothes made the journey more difficult than she had anticipated.

As she came to the road across from the shop a tall young man in a black leather jacket approached and offered to carry the bag for her.

Emily skipped down the stairs as Joyce approached the glass doorway of the shop.

‘Back again?’ she said to the young man.

‘No, no, I’ll go this time, just thought I would do my good deed for the day,’ he said with a bright smile as he left Emily with Joyce’s donations.

‘Oh Joyce, you beautiful woman you,’ she said as she linked arms and guided Joyce to the breakroom.

‘Well, I won’t need any of it in Cornwall, and you know how much I care about the charity,’ Joyce replied, a little embarrassed.

‘Still though!’ Emily kept smiling with her dark eyebrows raised.

A few boxes of clothing, dinner sets and china teacups wouldn’t usually warrant such a response, but Joyce thought it was probably because she would be missed.

Her one-day-a-week volunteering had meant so much to her and she was going to miss everybody she had worked with.

She held back the tears as Emily suddenly embraced her when they got to the quiet of the lounge.

‘That beautiful ring you donated will see us hit today’s target on its own!’

Emily grinned, crunching her arms with excitement.

‘What ring?’ She answered with a smile, sure that Emily was mixed up, she hadn’t given any of her jewellery away.

As Emily described the

diamond banded ring with a solitaire emerald, Joyce felt the bile rise in her throat and the colour drain from her face.

She was stunned with shock, unable to move.

Her eyes glazed as she slowly forced herself to look at her hand, but she already knew it was her engagement ring.

‘We just sold it to that man who helped you in.’

Joyce didn’t stop to hear any more, she ran out of the door, searching up and down the street but the place was empty.

She looked into the shops close by, her heart tight and her face hot until she had to admit that he had gone, forever, with her ring.

Emily was standing at the shop door but Joyce couldn’t go back in.

She spent the entire evening looking through her photo album at all the places she and Henry had loved together, all the memories created within a 50-mile radius of their home.

Leaving suddenly seemed like a betrayal.

Tears streamed as she apologised to a photograph of Henry at The Priory at sunset.

He had proposed on the grass as they ate a picnic of ham sandwiches.

A happy smile crept across her face as she remembered the raggedy half slices of bread she had cut for them.

The ham poked out and through some of the bread and the tomatoes squashed into other bits turning most of it to mush.

They had laughed so much it hurt after Henry could no longer pretend to eat his.

They had sat on the scratchy blanket, giddy on the small amount of wine and very little food when he produced the most beautiful ring she had ever seen.

The flawless emerald shining in the beautiful diamond stoned band.

She remembered her shock, her arms instinctively moving to her mouth to stop her happy screech escaping.

It was one of the most perfect days of her life.

She stroked the picture of him smiling, holding one of the awful sandwiches, and promised that she would go back to that place tomorrow come rain or shine and say goodbye.

Goodbye to their home, goodbye to her ring and a proper goodbye to him.

The morning sun shone through a slit in the heavy blackout curtains, the warmth of it waking Joyce from a restless night’s sleep.

Her eyes bloodshot and her grey, frizzy hair could not be tamed, but she had a promise to keep.

She dressed and set off for the Priory, taking her photograph of Henry with her.

She walked almost in a trance along the promenade until she saw something that made her ears grow hot and her heart race.

A tall man, wearing a leather jacket with his black hair combed to one side.

He was with an attractive blonde girl and they were laughing.

They were standing at the railings looking out to the sea.

The blonde girl’s hair flowed in the wind around her face.

He got down on one knee.

He opened a small box.

The girl threw her hands up over her face in shock, just the way Joyce had done almost 50 years ago.

The man brought the girl’s left hand from her mouth and slipped a ring onto her finger.

He got up and the girl threw her hands around him.

Exactly the way Joyce had when Henry had proposed.

It was like she was watching herself from the outside.

A solid lump filled her throat as she continued walking towards the couple.

She gripped the photograph of Henry.

The ring that meant so much to them was at the start again with a young couple just beginning their journey.

As she came to where they were she couldn’t stop herself placing her wrinkled hand on the blonde girl’s shoulder.

‘Congratulations,’ she said as she saw her ring, her beautiful ring, on the slender finger of the ecstatic young lady.

‘Thank you,’ the girl replied, a wide smile on her face as she showed Joyce her ring.

Joyce carried on her walk to the Priory.

She sat on the grass where Henry had proposed all those years ago and gave her photograph a tender kiss.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket.

It was Francis.

‘Grandma, are you ready for us to come and get you tomorrow?’ The sweet sounding voice of little Harry said on the phone.

Joyce smiled, ‘I am sweetheart. I really am.’

Emotional Behaviour The world stock markets have been making the headlines again in recent months with most of the developed markets experiencing falls since the beginning of the year.

As an example the FTSE 100 fell from an all time high of 7,792 points on 12 January to 7,056 at the end of March which is a fall of almost 10%! The Dow Jones experienced similar falls with the following headlines making the news in February ‘Dow’s nearly 1,600-point plunge marks its biggest one-day point drop ever’.

Volatility is not just a recent phenomenon. We have been through a period of low market volatility and relatively good stock market returns in recent years. This has in fact been out of the ordinary, but it is easy to become accustomed to these market conditions and increase your holdings considering them to be the new ‘normal’.

This normal behaviour can have a damaging effect on wealth creation if not understood and addressed appropriately.

By the time you’ve jumped on (or off) an investment bandwagon, chances are you’ve already missed out on whatever advantage you might have gained. Our community of traders, all housed within our shop in Princes Street, Yeovil, continues to flourish and there are many examples of successful collaborations and expansions within the independent businesses to celebrate.

We have such a broad range of shops, some of which have been trading with us for years, offering the same great product year on year while others are fledgling businesses, which we love to nurture and support. Remember to call in and see us when you’re in Yeovil town centre, with such a variety of shops and services, you’ll be amazed at how much is packed into our store! Our events continue to offer customers something different and there are two which I’d like to mention in particular.

Our ‘Waterstones Book Club’ delivers a calm and inviting atmosphere and encourages discussion of literary works. It’s held monthly at our cafe. Our partnership with Waterstones has been great and coupled with coffee and cake it is growing in popularity each month! Join us on the last Wednesday of the month from 10am -12 noon.

The second is our ‘Shhhh… Secret Acoustic Folk Supper’ which we run in conjunction with the music promoters, BearCat Collective. These superb evenings are held every two months, again in our café at The Emporium. There is a line-up of handpicked, acoustic musicians, delicious food and a bar for the evening. Proving very popular (standing room only at the last one) the next is on 10 May from 7pm – 11pm - arrive early to grab a table!

Kingsbury May Festival Monday 7 May

Kingsbury May Festival returns this year and is a great celebration of village life and the return of summer!

In recognition of the importance of the county to Britain’s bird population, the theme of this year’s celebration will be BIRDS. Expect lots of bird-themed costumes, withy sculptures and attractions – the RSPB will be represented and, for Harry Potter fans, there will be owls!

As always the Procession of the Green Man signals the start of the festival. Making his way from the fields to the top of Church Street, the Green Man will be accompanied

by dancers, musicians and acolytes bearing greenery, blossoms and willow favours.

May Pole, Morris and country dancing follows the opening song and this year Blackdown Samba will also be strutting their stuff.

There will be music in many parts of the festival: choirs in the churches, as well as organ recitals, ukulele ensembles, solo singers and a hammer dulcimer recital, while in the churchyard the brass band will play. The main music venue is the Green Man Stage in the Cabbage Patch field: so far the 6-piece folk/punk band Blackwater County and

Lazibyrd Trio with original songs of protest, love and loss are confirmed, but by the time you read this more acts will have been booked.

Enquiries from acts, entertainments and stallholders continue to pour in, but many of the attractions have already been decided. For the children there will be roundabouts, coconut shy, Mr Spangles the Clown, a climbing wall, bouncy castle and lots more.

It’s difficult to decide what the main attraction in the Cabbage Patch will be – the music stage, the amazing acrobatic aerial display, or the two dozen stalls offering foods from around

the world? Meanwhile in the Events Field a wide variety of stalls compete with the Owl Display, silly games, Vintage Vehicle Display and an all-day Dog Show.

As usual there will be a charge for car parking but entry to the festival is free.

Two events precede the festival on Saturday 5 May. The Fancy Dress Pram Race takes place in Church Street from 5 pm, and the main gig – Music in the Marquee – follows on from the race. More details of bands, tickets and all attractions can be found on our website: www.kingsburymayfestival.co.uk.

Sherborne Young Musician 2018 Sherborne Douzelage is pleased to announce that Adrian Brendel has agreed to be the new Patron for the Sherborne Young Musician project. He is one of the most versatile and original cellists of his generation and has travelled the world as soloist, collaborator and teacher. Adrian is artistic director of the Plush festival, held every summer in Plush, Dorset since 1995 and on 18 March this year he gave a concert in Sherborne along with Wessex Strings.

The third Sherborne Young Musician competition will take place on 19 May 2018.

Young teenage solo musicians have put in their nominations and will be busy practicing their pieces of music. This is a joint project run by Sherborne Douzelage, Sherborne Abbey Festival and the secondary Schools in Sherborne. The more senior teenage musicians have already been judged and five selected to go to a Douzelage International Young Musician festival in Granville France in July.

The Sherborne Young Musician Competition is run along the lines of the BBC Young Musician of the Year and is for strings, woodwind, brass and piano players as well as solo vocalists. The musical Director is Jamie Henderson of Sherborne School and the adjudicator in Andrew Trewhella from Wellington School.

There will be a final competition round followed by a concert in the Tindall Hall at 7:30 pm on Saturday19 May. Tickets are £10, including a glass of wine and will be available from Sherborne TIC, Winstone’s books and from Mary on 01963 251255 Kevin Waterfall said, “As with the 2016 events that were such a success this project is a wonderful opportunity for our young musicians and for audiences to experience excellent music, to mix with their peers from across Europe and gain awards for their performances”

Vegetables and fruit on the patio At the moment there are two trends working against one another. There is a huge, renewed interest in growing one’s own food, and yet many houses now have very little space for gardening. The two can be reconciled however, as there are many excellent ways of growing vegetables and fruit in pots on the patio. In fact, many varieties have been specially selected for such situations.

If space is limited then the vegetable plants also ought to look good, so that they fulfil the ornamental purpose of a garden.

To fit this requirement the choice of pots may take on an extra importance in terms of style and colour, but as long as the plants needs (in terms of volume and depth of the pot) are taken into consideration, there is a vast range available.

Fill the pots with the right compost. Most vegetables will be a one season crop and so the use of a specialist vegetable compost or a good quality multi compost is recommended. If you prefer not to use peat, then choose Sylvagrow which wins all of the awards for peat free compost. I use it a lot, and like the results.

For permanent planting choose a soil based compost such as John Inness No. 3. The loam or soil in this compost will look after the plant in the long term. Some, such as blueberries, require more specific conditions and so an ericaceous (or acidic) compost would be the right thing. There is a John Innes ericaceous compost that would be perfect for blueberries.

Blueberries are a perfect example of a plant that can be productive as well as good to look at. The flowers come in the spring, before the fruit shows through the summer. The foliage colours up beautifully in the autumn and holds for a long time usually into the winter.

I’ve enjoyed growing some of the salad mixes from Thompson and Morgan. Most enjoyable is the “Speedy Mix” which has a range of colours and leaf shapes of lettuce varieties. These mature quite quickly and can be cut with scissors when about three to four inches in height. The beauty is that they then regrow in a few weeks. I have a couple of pots of these and it keeps us going for some very healthy lunches.

I grew some carrots last year with schoolchildren and I kept one of the pots myself. We used a variety called Paris Market which are round and bite sized. There is a great joy in pulling these for a quick bite when on the patio. The compost just brushes off.

Our new puppy cottoned onto these and she is also enjoying the occasional snack!

In the same process with the schools we grew some chilli peppers. I’m not particularly a fan, but the crop was very pleasing and so I tried one on a mixed grill. The result was spectacular, there was a minor explosion in my mouth! The taste lingered for the next few weeks on anything cooked in the same pan, despite it being well scrubbed out!

Sweet peppers also cross the divide between ornamental and edible. These will need a sunny, sheltered spot to grow well outside, but are easily grown in a greenhouse or with some protection, as are aubergines. I love the colour of the foliage of aubergines and the flower is very pleasing.

Popular South Somerset plant fair

On Saturday 12 May from 10.00am to 4.00pm, Yarlington House, between Castle Cary and Wincanton, will host the largest Charity Specialist Plant Fair in South Somerset with 30 nurseries and garden related stands. With specialist nurseries attending from throughout the South of England, this plant fair is a must for keen plant buyers and gardeners alike. Along with specialist clematis, and other interesting climbers, there will be salvias, peonies, palms and ferns for sale. Other nurseries will be selling wild flowers, plants for shade, an eclectic mix of rare and unusual edible plants and a selection of unusual annuals from the Yarlington House stall.

Access to the pretty Yarlington House garden, which is not normally open to the public, is included in the entry of the plant sale at £3. There is no charge for children under sixteen and parking is free. There will be refreshments available throughout the day. This year, the Count and Countess de Salis have chosen the Parish Church of St.Mary, Yarlington and Yarlington Village Hall as the benefiting causes. This event is now in its 18th year. In 2017 over 1100 people visited.

Up The Garden Path This month I am planning a visit to Chelsea Flower Show with my lovely mum; it will be my third visit, but first time for mum!

The theme of this year’s show is “gardening and importance of plants and how they help to promote health and well being”.

Matt Keightly has designed a feature garden with this theme in mind to highlight the positive impact gardening has on our mental and physical health.

This year the show has the new category called “Space to Grow” focusing on smaller urban gardens and how by using original ideas you can make the most of small spaces.

I am intrigued to see “The Pearl Fisher Garden “designed by John Warland. His garden features aquatic filled tanks hosting ocean plants, fish and a three dimensional pearl diver. The aim of the garden is to highlight awareness to the devastating impact plastic waste is having on our oceans.

In the same category I am interested to see the Myeloma UK Garden designed by John Everiss and Francesca Murrell. It features a giant sculpture of a female head blowing seeds from her hands to represent new treatment and hope for patients.

This garden has really captured my imagination.

This year there are ten show gardens featured on Main Avenue.

These gardens are always a visual masterpiece of landscape ingenuity and beautiful planting and inspire us all to take a little bit of Chelsea home.

My favourite are the Artisan gardens; these gardens combine the use of traditional materials combined with great design. I am looking forward to seeing the Warner Edwards Garden designed

by Kate Savill and Tamara Bridge. The garden features plants used to create the natural flavours in their gin production as well as a bee bole to represent the farm’s own apiary.

Finally, Chelsea would not be Chelsea without the Great Pavilion.

This year over 85 nurseries will exhibit their plants and tempt us to buy. From roses to carnivorous plants, there really is something for everyone and I can’t wait to go!

In June I will be exhibiting my own show garden at BBC Gardeners’ World Live at the NEC from 14-17 June.

The garden is called “A Mermaids’ Tale” and features a willow mermaid made by local willow artist Elaine Marks. Show gardens are a real team effort with many un-sung heroes, like my husband Andrew who is a great support.

From now until Saturday 19 May there is a new exhibition on display at Yeovil Hospital outpatient department called ‘Fruits of the Imagination’ with works machine and hand embroidery by local textile artist and teacher Rebecca Bruton. Exotic passion fruit, delicious pineapple and vibrant red onions are amongst the carefully stitched fruits and vegetables that will be decorating the corridors. Rebecca has spent hours carefully producing these framed images using applique – a process of applying fabrics to one another using her collection of vintage and retro printed textiles. She then adds in detail through free motion embroidery, a technique that allows her the freedom to ‘paint’ with her sewing machine. All the pictures in the exhibition are for sale, either as originals or prints, with a percentage of the sales being donated to Yeovil Hospital Charity.

by Deborah Westmancoat. Paintings attempting to understand landscape and our place within it. Site and weather specific waters are collected and combined with pigment to record the energy, poetry and mystery of bodies of water held within the land.

From Monday 30 April to Saturday 19 May at the Ilminster Arts Centre have a exhibition called ‘Quiet’ – a selection of paintings and drawings by Lawrence Nash RWA. Less is more in this exhibition of paintings and drawings that take their inspiration from minimalism.

Lawrence is an Academician at the Royal West of England Academy, whose work will be familiar to visitors of the Arts Centre, as he has shown here for a number of years in the Open Exhibition. The exhibits will include ‘Ref 1001’, a coloured pencil on paper work that Lawrence donated to the RWA’s collection on becoming an Academician. Please note that on the final day of the exhibition the gallery will close at 12 noon.

From Saturday 5 to Monday 28 May from 10.00am to 5.00pm (except Monday 14 and Monday 21) at the Malthouse Gallery at the East Lambrook Manor Gardens there is an exhibition called ‘Landscape – Light and Colour’ featuring paintings of Kate Cochrane and Jason Nosworthy. Both have a love of colour and depict landscapes from Somerset to Tasmania and are mirrored by Margery Fish’s quintessential English cottage garden with its colourful layering of plants. Kate’s paintings are strong, well composed and vibrant with a vision fresh and unburdened by expectations, paying homage to places of immeasurable beauty through colour and abstraction. Tasmania offers deep apricots of coral fern, emeralds and topaz, snow gums and eucalypts plus hazy blue-greys of the Cradle Mountain range - all a delight to the eye. Kate pushes the boundaries of tangible form giving just enough to lure us into her magical world. This is what good art should do: awaken us to seeing the world anew. Jason Nosworthy, an emerging Somerset artist, harnesses his raw energy layering stunning hues of wild colour into organic and visceral canvases. With his training as a Landscape Designer he bridges the gap to unravelling the world around him in paint. His bold use of colour and often semi abstract interpretations, results in intriguing and engaging art. The use of layers and colour

throughout in his work heightens the senses and concludes in energetic works of art. Free admission.

From Saturday 26 May to Sunday 10 June at Bishops Caundle Village Hall from 10.00am to 4.00pm the Blackmore Vale Branch of the Embroiderers Guild host their Dorset Arts exhibition. A colourful and vibrant exhibition with a variety of panels, demonstrations, hangings and 3D items with many for sale. Pieces demonstrate traditional and contemporary techniques. Operation Michael was a major German military offensive during the first world war and began the Spring Offensive at dawn on 21st March 1918. It was designed to separate the British and French forces and capture the ports supplying the allied troops, bringing the war to an end.

The offensive moved so quickly that the Germans could not reammunition the fast-moving front line and it failed. It is recognised as the battle that started the end of the war. R.C. Sherriff’s powerful play is set in an officer dugout on the front line at St. Quentin, northern France, and opens as the new company is moving in to start its tour of duty on the night of Monday 18th March 1918. On Thursday 24 at the Octagon Theatre from 7.30pm see ‘BalletBoyz’. New works in the first half of Fourteen Days, choreographers Javier de Frutos, Craig Revel Horwood, Iván Pérez and Christopher Wheeldon were teamed with composers Scott Walker, Joby Talbot, Charlotte Harding and Keaton Henson and each given just fourteen days to create their pieces. Playing with the concept of balance and imbalance, the result is an exciting and varied programme of dance and music.

Fallen forms the second half of the evening, choreographed by Russell Maliphant and set to a powerful score by French film composer Armand Amar. Fallen won the National Dance Award for Best Modern Choreography in 2013.

Philip Markham, a publisher of children’s books, is asked by his business partner, Henry Lodge, if he can borrow the flat for the evening to gallivant with his latest girlfriend. As Philip and his wife will be out, he reluctantly agrees. At the same time, Joanna Markham is being persuaded by Linda Lodge to let her borrow the empty flat in order to entertain her lover. With some misgivings, Joanna agrees.

What nobody knows is that the interior designer who has been decorating the flat for the past three months has decided that this is the night that he and the au pair girl will try out the new oval bed.

When the Markhams’ evening out is cancelled, it is too late to let any of the parties know and three sets of hopeful lovers all converge on the bedroom at the same time. The situation is further complicated by the arrival of Olive Harriet Smythe, a straightlaced authoress of children’s books. The frantic efforts of the Markhams to hide the amorous goings-on and, at the same time sign up Miss Smythe, lead to a hectic and hilarious evening.

Following the huge success of last year which attracted over 5,000 people, a committee led by former mayor David Birley and Taff Martin of Abbey 104 are busy planning this year’s Sherborne Summer Festival which is on Saturday 16 June from 12 noon to 10pm - admission is free.. A fun day out for all the family is planned to include bands and performances by nearby schools and local community acts.

There will be lots for children to do thanks to activities put on

by ArtsLink as well as a bouncy castle. The Festival will feature displays of mediaeval warfare as well as archery and flyfishing.

There will also be a shopping mall with food and drink stalls and of course a bar!

Purlieu Meadow will be the prime location for this year’s Festival, courtesy of Mr and Mrs Wingfield Digby.

This year the programmes are also free and will be available in Sherborne and surrounding villages.

Elisabeth Bletsoe, Curator of Sherborne Museum, said, “If you love your local heritage, it’s enormously exciting to be able to communicate this passion to the public. A minimum commitment of two hours per fortnight is required but we would welcome those who are able to volunteer on a more regular basis. Alternatively, you could sign up as a reserve which means that you would occasionally be required to stand in for a regular steward on holiday or in an emergency. No qualifications required but an induction is provided, followed by ongoing training and support.”

A long overdue instruction by Ofcom to BT has ordered a £7 per month cut in line rental charges. While this £84 annual reduction is welcome, their call rates etc are so high that it is rare for us not to be able to reduce their bills by 30% at least.

They have also been ordered not to increase prices by more than the rate of inflation.

More than half of British households have experienced problems with their Broadband. Price hikes, poor speeds, connection dropouts and router issues are the most common.

According to a Which poll of 1,900, Virgin Media customers were the most likely to experience a problem with 73% reporting a difficulty. Some 62% of Sky customers were unhappy, followed by 61% of BT users. However, Zen Internet had the lowest discontented rate of only 26% complaining.

The Labour Party wants to nationalise water companies and use the profits to pay for the purchase, whilst Tories seek to put a cap on prices, but these are above present rates so you cannot look forward to a decrease. We are however stepping up our efforts to get businesses to save money by changing supplier. We hope to save them £1,000,000 over the next year.

Some time ago I promised you a report on life without a PC, so here we go. Four years ago we moved offices from a home workshop, to the shop in downtown Milborne Port, my computer going with the move. I thought long and hard about if I actually needed a PC at home and decided to see if I could survive with just a tablet, if the worst happened I could always use my wife’s PC! To make it work you need the following; a tablet, a Bluetooth keyboard, an internet connection, a Wi-Fi printer and a credit card.

A tablet: There are hundreds on the market, the Apple iPad, Android based and Windows based tablets from a variety of other manufacturers, and all of varying sizes. They all run “apps” that are the programs that do stuff like internet browsing, email, writing, calculating, picture viewing etc., all have cameras and are all touch-screen. I have an iPad (from £319), but other tablets are available from as little as £49.99.

A Bluetooth keyboard: When you type on a tablet you have an on-screen keyboard that pops-up; this is great for simple stuff like internet browsing, emailing or messaging, but a bit unforgiving if you are typing a long bit of prose. What you need is a Bluetooth keyboard! I have a Logitech keyboard/stand/cover made to fit my iPad (about £30).

An internet connection: EVERYTHING you do on a tablet will require an internet connection at some point; browsing, email, file saving, picture storage etc. There are three ways of achieving this; (1) Wi-Fi - Either at home or away in a hotel, pub, café etc; (2) Wi-Fi Tethering - Using your mobile phone to create a Wi-Fi hotspot to connect to; (3) Cellular Connection - Requires a SIM slot on your tablet to connect to the mobile phone network and a subscription to a data plan for that device. I use whatever Wi-Fi is available and mobile tethering as necessary.

Many costs rose on 1 April. So to maintain your spending power it is essential to have look again at what savings you can make.

A Wi-Fi printer: The paperless office I hear you laugh! At some point in time you will want to, or need to print something. Nearly all new printers are Wi-Fi enabled and nearly all support wireless printing from your tablet. I have a simple scanner/printer/copier from Argos at about £35.

The excellent television series,” Supervet” shows what wonderful operations can be performed on pets. However this comes at a price. The more complicated ones cost about £7,500 and lesser ones about £3,500 a time. Pet insurance to cover the cost is quite expensive. A local owner insured her Rottweiler for £2,500 but found that the treatment cost was £3,500 leaving her to find £1,000. According to The Association of British Insurers the average claim is £750.

A credit card: Tablets have very limited storage (if any), and all data needs to be stored in the cloud somewhere. What are you going to do with all your existing documents, pictures and videos from your old PC? Upload them to cloud storage! Many providers exist: Microsoft, Google, Apple, Dropbox and all offer limited space for free with a payable upgrade when you run out. It’s really cheap storage at about £50 a year for hundreds of gigabytes of space. I use two; Dropbox for business stuff and iCloud for private.

As with other costs, it pays to shop around. No one insurer is the best for all pets but we have found that most of the information you require can be found on www. comparethemarket.com/pet-insurance . To get a quote you need to consider what you need. Cover can include dental care, a compensation payment if your pet dies, a payment to cover the costs of advertising if it’s lost and boarding fees if you become ill, Read carefully what is not covered on a proposed policy.

So there you have it … It is possible to live without a PC. You just need to get into the right mind-set.

Join us on a Mexican Feast Day!

Here at The Stags Head we know that Spring has arrived as the Wye Valley asparagus is here; it is absolutely delicious served chargrilled with aged parmesan and a crispy duck egg (yes, really, a crispy egg!).

We also get the spring feeling when thinking about and planning for the upcoming bank holidays in May. For the first one, at the beginning of May, we will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo (5 May in Spanish), on Saturday 5 May in the middle of the bank holiday weekend.

The date is observed in Mexico to commemorate the Mexican Army’s defeat of the superior French forces at the Battle of Puebla, on 5 May, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza.

However, in the USA, Mexican Americans take the opportunity to fully celebrate the culture of Mexico on this day, with street fiestas and lots of Mexican food, drink and music.

To us, Mexico is synonymous with hot, sunny weather, fiestas with vibrant colours and music, plus Margaritas and Tequila!

Tequila is becoming the fashionable spirit of choice this summer. It is a type of Mezcal and is made by distilling the fermented juices of the Weber blue agave plant, (a member of the lily family which looks like a giant aloe vera plant with spiked barbs on the tips) with water.

There are several different types of Tequila, ranging from Blanco or Silver Tequila which is clear; Gold Tequila which gets its colour from the addition of caramel; Reposado (‘rested’), which is rested in wooden casks for two to nine months; Anejo (‘aged’) which is very smooth, having been aged in bourbon barrels for a minimum of one year; to Extra-Anejo, which is matured in bourbon barrels for over four years and is considered to be of similar quality to malt whisky.

Tapas is the Spice of Life Did you Know that the word Tapa means “top” or “lid”?

The whole tapas eating culture came about because, way back in the day, thoughtful barkeepers in Spain used to provide a bread “tapa” for customers to cover their drinks so that flying insects would not get in. It was then an easy next step to offer a small mouthful, or pincho, of food to sit on that bread. The tapas was born! You still should get a small pincho of food in a proper Spanish bar when you order your first round. When I landed in Madrid in the early 90s this was a standard practice, I noticed on my last visit that it was much more of a rarity; soliciting a very Iberian shrug when I asked “donde es mi pincho???”. Maybe my Spanish has really deteriorated!

Tapas has now become so popular as a way of eating as it fits in with our 21st century life styles so well. There will always be a place for a formal meal with crisp, white table clothes and a structured three (or more) courses that are yours to eat on your own. But we are becoming a nation of more casual diners; wanting a social experience along with great food and drink. Tapas lends itself to this beautifully. We want our food to encourage conversation, not kill it. To this end we decided early on that we wanted bench style seating for the main dining room at

Vida Comida. I know that this is not to everyone’s taste, but we love having groups share some space, see what each other are eating and who knows, make new friendships as a result. It has happened…

Tapas in Madrid has moved on too. If you want a totally crazy tapas weekend head to Madrid in late October. Back in the 1990s the Lavapies district had the reputation of being a gloriously bohemian place for a night out, but you had to be really smart not to get robbed.

20 years later and now Lavapies has one of the world’s most amazing multicultural Tapas festivals. Feast or Famine?

Spring? If only! The orchard should be bursting in to leaf and blossom, but at the time of writing not a bud has broken out. It still looks like mid-winter, as do most of the field crops. With another week in prospect where the yellow orb in the sky remains behind clouds, the temperature mostly languishes below 10C (today’s max 7C) there is little prospect of meaningful growth.

English Wine Week at The Somerset Wine Co.

The optimist will say it will even out. For that there will need to be accelerated growth, or a long late autumn. This explains amply why farming is in the lap of the gods.

In times past that meant all citizens faced feast or famine dependent on the weather. Now we gaily import from wherever as we have the financial clout to make up any shortfalls. Just note the proportion of a person’s income that goes on food expenditure in different countries and we can appreciate why those who spend such a small proportion generally attribute less value to food and diet.

In the orchard I’m really pleased as where I pruned some deer ravaged trees down to a bud close to the ground, that has now woken up and is sprouting! I was cutting up to 2m of growth because of the damage. Now all I need is warmth to allow that bud to put up a new trunk within the shelter.

As I farm organically I don’t squirt glyphosate around the base of the trees to keep them weed free. Instead we have dug in jute mats, a time consuming process. But they are kind! They should last two years and see out the worst of the competitive challenge from grass and other weeds. They’ll also hopefully minimise drying out in the summer, hard though that is to imagine while the soil is waterlogged.

This Herefordshire Russett is ready to go.

Plenty of docks are evident within the orchard which will be topped to ensure no seeds set.

Ideally a month of dry weather soon will allow the excellent Gastrophysa viridula beetle to eat a lot of the leaves, lay eggs and their larvae eat the rest. Twice in the last 20 years this has happened and completely rid a field of docks, and they have never significantly returned. The dry weather is crucial to not wash the larvae off the plants before they finish totally demolishing it.

Meanwhile I’m busy booking lots of fairs and shows to attend to bring the apple juice and cider to the attention of as many people as possible! We have a lot to thank the Romans for - sewage systems, aqueducts, cement and yes, grape vines! It is long believed that the Romans planted vines around Somerset and made wine. Roman billhooks used for vineyard work were discovered near Glastonbury and amphorae, clay pots for ageing wine, have been found throughout Southern England. So, we shouldn’t be surprised to see English Wine Week featuring prominently in the calendar this month.To most people it is still a big surprise to find a palatable English wine - but it shouldn’t be. Kicking off on 27 May, English Wine Week is a national campaign designed to raise awareness of English wine across the country.

Aldwick Estate near Bristol as well as having an award-winning Sparkling Brut, Jubilate, has now released a stunning, fruit-driven yet savoury Pinot Noir.And for those who like pink, seek out their highly-acclaimed Pinot Noir rosé, Mary’s Rose, which won Bronze in the International Wine Challenge 2017 and Commended in Decanter magazine.We are delighted to be stocking all three at The Somerset Wine Co. When you buy an English wine you can be proud to be supporting a burgeoning local and national industry.These small producers craft their wines with soul and integrity and the hard work is done in the vineyard - with healthy, often organically grown grapes with minimum fertilisers and sprays, not adjusted nor made to a recipe in a winery, as is often the case with mass produced supermarket wines.

English wines haven’t travelled far either so you can credit yourself with enjoying a great low carbon footprint wine to boot.

As Brexit looms, drinking European wines many become an expensive luxury so let’s look to our homegrown products to fill our glasses.

Eye Clinic returns to the Sherborne Country Fair We are proud to announce that we are the Official Veterinarians for the Sherborne Country Fair on Bank Holiday Monday, the 28 May. For the third consecutive year and following huge success and popularity over the last two years, we are once again providing an eye screening clinic for dogs. We have arranged for Nick Burden to attend, a veterinary surgeon and BVA appointed eye panelist. He will be conducting eye examinations under the BVA screening programme for hereditary eye disease in dogs. It is run in conjunction with the Kennel Club (KC) and the International Sheep Dog Society (ISDS).

The main purpose of the scheme is to ensure there is no evidence of hereditary eye diseases in dogs used for breeding. By screening these dogs hopefully we can prevent eye diseases being passed on to future generations of puppies. There are 12 hereditary conditions covered by the scheme in over 50 breeds, many of which are untreatable so prevention really is the only cure. In general, the best age for testing is when a dog has reached one year old and thereafter on an annual basis. However, in some breeds, it is necessary to test them as young puppies (usually between six and twelve weeks of age) to detect diseases such as Collie Eye Anomaly.

Although the scheme records whether hereditary eye conditions are present or not, it also identifies any other abnormalities present in the eye or surrounding structures such as the eyelids, so it is a very comprehensive examination of

your dog’s entire eye.

An eye examination lasts approximately 10 minutes and costs £34 per dog. You will need to arrive 20mins before your appointment to allow time for eye drops to be administered.

Breeds which are predisposed to glaucoma (a potentially blinding raised pressure inside the eye) are recommended to undergo a further test as part of their certification; this costs an additional £43 and lasts an extra 10 minutes. £3 from each test will be donated to the Country Fair Charity Fund. All dogs must be microchipped to be screened and KC registered dogs must present their KC certificates to be added to the scheme and certified.

If you are considering breeding from your dog this is not only an essential part of pre-breeding screening but part of your responsibility to ensure the health of future generations.

Even if your dog is past breeding age, eye examinations still play an important role in screening for inherited eye diseases presenting later in life and as a means of assessing eye and general health. Places are limited so please don’t hesitate to contact one of our surgeries for further information or to book a place.

EFP is a form of psychotherapy and relies upon the therapeutic knowledge and experience gained through a mental health qualification”. Skills include non-verbal communication, assertiveness, creative thinking, problem-solving, leadership, teamwork, relationship skills, confidence and resilience”.

One on one sessions of 1 hr = £55 or 1.5hr = £75 Equine Assisted Wellbeing workshop days are small groups of three people, ‘sharing’ the experience, which has its own special authentic experience. 11am/4pm lunch of soup/rolls and light refreshments provided £45 per person.

Q. How long have you been in the UK Natalia?

Q. Have you always wanted to work in this field of expertise?

Q. What made you want to move away from practising as a GP and how did you become trained in make-up and beauty therapies?

Q. Was that the end of the studying?

A. No, because In 2011 before I opened my own salon I learned COSMETOLOGY for six months, and this covered EYELASH EXTENSION and MASSAGE. From that day on I built my experience of the daily routines in the Beauty Industry and chose to concentrate more on Cosmetology.

Q. With this expertise in Cosmetology, what can you offer clients?

A. Basically I learned how to treat any problem and any area of the face and neck using chemical peels, mesotheraphy, biorevitalization, fillers, botox or plasma pen.

Q. That’s an amazing number of treatments. Is there anything you haven’t included?

A. I wanted to combine my knowledge of Makeup with my knowledge of Cosmetology. This means I can offer my clients longer lasting treatments and that is how I became a PERMANENT MAKEUP ARTIST too! How are your new year’s resolutions of healthy eating, regular exercise and a positive mental attitude going? If, like me, your good intentions have been thwarted by the Easter holidays, bad weather and family birthdays then you might need to review where you’re at now.

A lot of articles at this time of year focus on being beach ready. Are you beach ready? Well I’ve just packed my thermals away but what are we looking at under those thermals? Are you cave dwelling white and have you neglected your muscle mass in favour of watching the winter Olympics with a nice cup of tea and a Twix? Other chocolate bars are available!

It can feel over whelming and difficult to know where to start with fitness but life is so much better when we are fit and healthy. We can feel a little nervous about taking that first step into a gym or signing up for that Zumba class that we so want to do.

We know that a Mediterranean diet and regular exercise will be good for us but how do you actually begin and stay motivated?

Once you have found what you’re going to do, you may need some help. Research shows that working out with a friend or attending classes makes you more likely to keep it up. Certainly gyms will try to help with this as we did in April with our refer a friend scheme but as we nudge into Spring if you haven’t got your plan for fitness ready yet, perhaps you need a helping hand and that’s where gym outreach can help. A good gym can be a healthy heart of the community keeping people fit, yes, but also nurturing the social aspect of our communities as a hub for people to meet and share experiences.

I think people are often surprised at how a good gym can feel so much like a second home and family once you get into the swing of things, start to make connections and begin to motivate and support each other within classes. Still you have to take that first step, and when you do you’ll be rewarded with the support system that can help to keep you motivated.

To help with this Oxley Sports Centre will be at the Sherborne Castle Country Fair on Bank Holiday Monday 28 May and it’s a great chance to come and talk to us. We’ll have offers, free goodies, class and swim vouchers to give away and there will even be a chance to try some of our gym equipment. Which exercise should I be doing?

TYPE OF EXERCISES AND CLASSES The kind of exercise that you do depends on what effect you want to see on your body. Stretching promotes flexibility, makes movement easier, and decreases the risk of muscle injury. Strength training promotes muscle strength and helps build bone density. Endurance exercises strengthen the heart and improve overall fitness. So really the best workouts will combine a bit of all the elements in the three types of exercise mentioned.

STRETCHING AND FLEXIBILITY TRAINING As we get older joints become stiff and less flexible. In order to avoid injury during strength training and aerobic exercise, you need to warm up and cool down with stretching exercises for 5-10 minutes. If you feel you would benefit a bit more from this type of exercise why not try our Flex-a-cise or Yoga classes.

STRENGTH TRAINING Muscles in the upper and lower body can be strengthened through the use of machines, free weights. When lifting weights, you should start with a weight you can lift without very much effort five times. When this becomes too easy, increase to doing two sets of five. If you feel you would benefit a bit more from this type of exercise why not try our Kettlecore, Bootcamp or program lead gym sessions.

ENDURANCE TRAINING Endurance activities involve exercises that increase your heart rate and breathing for a longer period of time. Good exercises to engage in are low-impact including swimming, walking and dancing. Higher impact endurance exercises which may benefit you, include Indoor cycling, Boxercise or Runfit. These exercises should be done for 30-60 minutes at least 2 or 3 times per week.

BACK STRENGTHENING TRAINING Back pain can be a common symptom of aging and excessive strain being put on the lumbar back muscles. Backs regularly get forgotten as part of many workouts, so it is imperative we try and do some regular strengthening.

‘Pills to Purge Melancholy’: Apothecaries in a provincial setting

DON’T PANIC! As a result of the expanding economy in the course of the 18th century, the market for medical services, within the traditional tripartite demarcation of the medical profession, became increasingly competitive among the growing proportion of affluent consumers. At the summit were the university-educated physicians who undertook the art of diagnosis, next came the surgeons who performed operations, followed by the apothecaries who made and dispensed medicines. Gradually the apothecary became more involved in diagnosing and treating, in addition to providing the medicines, evolving into what we understand today as a ‘general practitioner.’

The market town of Sherborne, with its rural hinterlands, provided a diverse and affluent customer base among the middling sort for the twelve Sherborne apothecaries whose wills and inventories have survived between 1624 and 1787. From their probate material it is possible to perceive the retail environment provided by the layout and content of their shops, while social aspiration within the town can be gauged from their election to the ruling bodies of the Almshouse, and Grammar School. Ten of the apothecaries were chosen as brethren of the Almshouse and seven served on the governing body of the Grammar School.

Many apothecaries seem to have lived within the same building as their shop, and the number of rooms recorded suggests these were substantial. In Sherborne the houses of John Thornton (d.1691) and John Horne (d.1683) contained nine rooms and a stable as well as a shop. Judging from the properties accrued and the bequests made in the wills of our twelve apothecaries the business would seem to have been profitable (John Deering left £1400 to his daughter on his death in1787).

The shop contents often represented a large portion of the total inventory value. Five inventories of Sherborne apothecaries include separate shop valuations. The value of shop and contents in four represented between 50 and 60 percent of the net worth, and the remaining one 40 per cent. The debts owing to John Thornton amounted to the considerable sum of £120. It is difficult to evaluate how representative such a small sample represents but there would seem to have been plenty of custom judging by the clusters of probate material. Three apothecaries died between 1624 and 1634, four between 1683 and 1691 and three between 1720 and 1729.

Sherborne shop interiors show strong correlation to evidence from London, providing counters, storage containers such as boxes, bottles, glasses, holding ‘drugs, oyles, syrups, waters and other confecions,’ along with practical accoutrements of the trade such as pestles and mortars, scales and weights, and cases of instruments.

The manufacture of remedies is suggested by the presence of stills or limbecks for distilling purposes.

This brief survey hints at the vital role played by provincial apothecaries in the expanding 18th century medical marketplace, fuelled by consumer demand, which led to a rise in their social standing and commensurate trustworthiness. The illustration is of a cabinet from the Abbey Pharmacy now on display in Sherborne Museum.

You should enquire as to whether or not the car is theirs. If the car is owned by someone else, you should ask for their details too. You should also record the vehicle registration numbers and a description of all vehicles involved. This will assist should you need to make a claim either for damage to your vehicle or for a personal injury.

• If any driver involved does not have their insurance details to hand and the accident is not serious enough for the Police to need to attend, the accident must be reported to the Police within 24

hours, either directly to a Police Constable or by attending a Police Station.

• You should also take photographs of the positions of the cars along with any damage, but again this should only be if it is appropriate in the circumstances.

• You should identify and obtain details of any eye witnesses to the accident, including their names, addresses and telephone numbers. Eye witnesses are crucial if there is an argument over who caused the accident.

• You should report any accident to your insurer as soon as possible (preferably the same day) in case you need to make a claim for vehicle damage or personal injuries you have suffered or if another driver involved makes a claim against you.
