Issue No. 362 Spring 2016 www.britishdrivingsociety.co.uk Here we are with our new look magazine which I hope you will like and will continue to contribute to. If anyone has any particular comments on the magazine I would be interested to receive them. It would also be lovely to hear from some of our more recent members on how they came to take up driving, who encouraged them and any interesting stories around that. I really look forward to hearing your opinions and receiving your contributions. Without your input the magazine would not exist. Brian Ball and his wife very kindly took on the challenging job of selecting the winner of last year’s Junior Competition and eventually, after much deliberating made their selection and a years membership has been won by Josiah Rowlands. Brian wrote “All these young driver’s articles were of a very good standard, our congratulations to all of them and we wish them many happy times out and about with their turnouts”. Very well done Josiah! I’m delighted to say that the Junior Competition will be running again this year and to kick it off we have two submissions in this edition. I do think that it is important that we encourage our young drivers any way we can.

On the subject of competitions you will see that a front page photographic competition will be running throughout 2016, details can be found in the magazine. I would also like to congratulate Hazel Woodbridge who has been awarded the BEM for services to carriage driving in Wiltshire. Great news Hazel! The form for Nominations for Council is included at the back of the magazine and is your chance to become actively involved in the running of your society so give it some serious thought. Once again there is a packed calendar of events which means that lots of people are doing a tremendous amount of work to allow us to enjoy our hobby and sport. Fingers crossed that the weather calms down and dries up soon. We have all had the most horrendous amounts of rain and storm force winds courtesy of a succession of Gertrude’s and Henry’s! A stiff gin is required before watching the weather forecast these days. On a more serious note, I hope that those of you that have been badly affected by the storms are safe and bearing up. Enjoy your driving and be safe.

Hazel Woodbridge was awarded a BEM in the New Year BDS Council were delighted to hear recently that long standing member Hazel Woodbridge was awarded a BEM in the New Year’s honour list for services to carriage driving in Wiltshire. Well known for her incredible organising skills and `gentle persuasion`, Hazel is currently Area Commissioner for Gloucestershire and North Wiltshire where the events are always many and various . Chairman Angela Sixsmith congratulated Hazel saying `this is a truly wonderful celebration of your tireless work for the BDS` and I know her area members, driving friends and colleagues would certainly agree with that thought. Hazel`s own reaction was typical – `My Flab was definitely ‘ghasted ‘! It is just a wonderful end to 2015 which has been great`. Well done Hazel and please keep up the good work!

Bicester Hunt Pony Club Carriage Driving mini Achievement Badge

Two former Junior Whips, Annabelle Kidd & Natasha Pritty (a past scholarship winner) who came-up through the ranks (as did Amy Bracey Carriage Foundation Project Curator) were involved with The Charity Launch at The Royal Mews on October 30th. The Carriage Foundation want to encourage young people to embark on Apprenticeship schemes i.e. Carriage Restorers, Painters, Wheelwrights, Harness Makers and Carriage Driving. If you are interested in taking part, either as a Work Placement provider or an Apprentice, then please do contact me. The Spring Study Tour on April 17th – 24th to Lisbon, Portugal is all in order with a group of 25 members flying out from Liverpool. On a rather blustery day on a farm near Kirtlington in Oxfordshire seven young members, four boys and three girls between nine and five years old assembled to learn a bit about carriage driving and to take their test. Needless to say the wind was heading straight into the barn, used as an indoor school, but with open upper sides, so once the practical learning had finish everyone adjourned into the house, except Dazzle of course – June Collier’s very patient horse who was found a nice stable out of the wind. The group included Hazel Woodbridge AC and Amy Bracey from adjoining North Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, who did the instructing between them, June and George Collier who drove Dazzle over from their nearby yard and several adults from the Pony Club. It was great to see such a young group so enthusiastic as Dazzle was reharnessed up, with an explanation of the purpose of each piece of harness. Once this was completed then the various parts of the carriage was explained and the importance of the swingletree etc. Hazel was also able to show photographs of alternative carriages and types of harness. All the children had the opportunity to drive round the school with June which they were all very excited about. Once the children (and the adults) had warmed up a bit, each individually took the simple test requirement of naming parts of the harness which Hazel had brought along. Amy then with the aid of diagrams and photos continued with the test regarding vehicles. They both agreed that it was amazing how much additional information the children had remembered from the practical

session and which they added when identifying the various items. All in all a very successful and enjoyable day with seven very happy children who will shortly get their first Carriage Driving badge.

Lincolnshire British Driving Society’s Visit to Bransby Horses Twenty four members and friends visited Bransby Horses in the middle of January for a very informative tour.

It was extremely windy and both ponies coped very well with the audience and flapping plastic poster on the side of the menage.

As we walked along the pathways Louise gave us a brief history of how the various groups of ponies, donkeys and horses came to be in the care of Bransby Horses. We met some very cheeky ponies, delightful donkey foals not to mention two extremely licky horses.

On our way to the exit we all took a detour to the second hand tack shop and found some real bargains.

After lunch, which meant we could warm up as it was rather chilly outside, we headed to the rehoming barn. Sarah gave us a potted history of the ponies available for rehoming and explained they have rehomed show jumpers, driving trial ponies and dressage horses. They certainly had some beautiful ponies waiting for their forever homes. Next we went up to their new all weather driving and riding arena and watched as Kelli drove Tenby who is ready to be rehomed now, then Maverick who is in the early days of his training.

Scottish Junior Points Competition

Junior Award Winners

The Scottish Junior points prize giving was held at Barstobrick near Castle Douglas on Sunday 13th December following Dumfries and Galloway area’s very successful Christmas fancy dress long reining competition. Three points were awarded to juniors each time they attended a drive out, a show, a training day or if they groomed for an adult or helped at a driving event. Points cards were given out at the beginning of the year and returned at the end of October. The competition is divided into 13 years and over and 12 years old and under. Senior winner was Mhairi Hume and the runner up was Aine Vance.

Junior winner was Lucy McClymont and the runners up were Lexie Donaldson, Sianna Dove, Skye Findlater, Ryan Powell and Matthew Powell. Each competitor received a book and a rosette. Photographic Competition! This year the Publicity committee will be searching for suitable front cover photographs for the BDS magazine. We’re looking for beautiful and original photographs of carriages and/or harness horses taken at a BDS activity during the 2016 season. Your entries must be printed and sent, not emailed and only one or two photos in colour or black and white may be entered please. Images must be at least 5” by 7”. Lanhydrock National Trust estate was the destination on Sunday October 11th for a drive around the estate and a short skills section. The drive was arranged by Brian and Brenda Ball; Tamsin Hamer, Pat Maunder and Bryony Maunder looked after the skills section. It was lovely once again to use the large field (we certainly needed that size field) with the parking at the top of the field and skills section as a focus for the general public in the lower area. We were delighted to see so many members attending, in fact sixteen in total were able to join us. Well done to everyone who took part. Judging by the smiles on the day, everyone had a lovely time and the effort to attend the last drive of the season was well worth it. We were delighted to invite Martin Horler on October 29th to Jamaica Inn at Bolventor to give an informative and interesting talk on “The Role of the Royal Mail Guard”. Martin through his extensive research was able to share in great detail, the expectations of the role which were thrust on the Guard. Martin (dressed in full livery) was also able to regale us with the various coaching calls blown by the guard and explain their meaning. The talk which lasted more than one and a half hours was illustrated by pictures and photographs. We were also able to see the variety of weapons which the guard had at his disposal to defend the Royal Mail. It was a most enjoyable evening shared by almost fifty people who gathered and we were delighted to be joined by some members from BDS Devon too. The event was kindly organised by Maureen Ryder-Gordon.

The BDS Cornwall Annual Meeting took place on November 13 at the Masonic Hall in Tywardreath. Brian Ball reviewed the horse driving year and regaled us with some favourite stories from his horsey past. Brian then presented Leaf Spring Awards to Brian Ball’s Retirement Presentation Maureen Ryder-Gordon (third award) and Maureen “took the reins” and invited suggestions Anne Honeywell. The Commissioners cup was for events in 2016. It was decided that we should presented to Mel and Carl Wilton as they have have a further meeting in January to tease out the represented Cornwall successfully at many events details of the most popular events, where they this year with their new pair of ponies. Happy New Year to all our members For those of you who regularly attend our events you will already be familiar with Sally Cowan and myself Margaret Norris. You will also know that both of us, due to constraints and pressures of extremely busy full time jobs felt at the end of last season that we could not continue in our positions as joint AAC’s for Area 15. We felt it was time to step back and allow someone else the opportunity to take the branch forward. However John Jackson our committed and enthusiastic AC for several years also felt that that he did not want to continue in office. His health has not been good recently and despite his stoic and admirable determination to carry on regardless, we have all been concerned for him and respect this decision which was so difficult for him to make.

As no one has registered an interest in John’s position of AC and because Sally and I feel that our very active area must continue to develop, we have eventually been persuaded to act as joint AC’s. We will be ably assisted by Rita Stevens as your AAC, Sharon Allsop as Treasurer , Carolyn Bryers as your Support Officer and David Kent and Reg Muggleton as your Rights of Way Officers.

Review of 2015 The 2015 season has been busy, successful and enjoyable. Our events list had a great variety of activities-some familiar and some new ventures comprising of:- A social afternoon, two training days, a challenge day, a Trec, two ride and drive cross country, a show and eleven road drives.

Cumbria To be Announced The weather in general has been kind to us, the only drive that we all got wet to our underwear was at Hartington, usually one of our prettiest drives but hard to appreciate in horizontal rain and thick fog! Our spirits were lifted by the delicious tea and cakes afterwards, very civilised. The only event cancelled was the Fun Day at Redhouse Stables-a disappointment to us all. We would like to share with you a few of the highlights of the year, hoping to bring a smile to those who remember them. We started off in February with a social afternoon in a pub and here we enjoyed a talk from a vet, a quiz and time to catch up (very noisily) with the news and gossip. The Safe and Sound training day at Redhouse followed in March and was a great success thanks to Malcolm and Nicola Salter who held everyone’s attention and gave us plenty to think about on everyday Health and Safety considerations. Thank you to those members who brought a variety of turnouts to act as’ guinea pigs.’ A training day for Driver’s Dream was held in April in the indoor school at Barleyfields. Many thanks to Rita Stevens for giving a ridden dressage demonstration to music before going on to help us all try and transfer that grace and discipline to carriage driving . No easy task!! It was great fun though, horses, whips and grooms all appearing to enjoy performing to music. Every performance was unique but I’m sure no one will forget Julie Barker and her tiny Shetland Pedro strutting their stuff to ‘ I love to Boogie’!

Area News Our area show in July began with torrential rain but by the time the first class was in the show ring the sun came out. Many thanks go to David and Marie Tivey whose organisation of this show was as always second to none. Sadly David and Marie have decided to stand down as organisers from 2016 so there is an urgent need to find someone else to take on the planning of this event not least because the whole ethos of this show is to encourage newcomers to driving. It would be such a shame to lose our show so if you want to get involved please let us know. The Chatsworth Challenge and the Trec at the Chatsworth Country Fair brought out the competitive side of our members and despite the camaraderie competition was HOT especially when desperation and frustration set in at the Hook –a-Duck station!! For once, we did manage to escape the presence of the dreaded giant sized purple hippo on the obstacle course much to Caroline’s dismay and everyone else’s reliefespecially the ponies Our road drives could not go ahead without the hospitality and generosity of members. There is always so much preparation and hard work goes on in advance to host one of these drives and to manage it safely on the day. Many thanks this year must go to:- Caroline Dale Leech and Peter Leech, Reg and Carole Muggleton, Anne and Bernard Greer (their drive is also known as the ‘Meringue Drive as Anne’s meringues are famous and are the main attraction of the day), Rob and Jan Hutchinson, John and Mary Stubbs, Fred Gee and Fred Morton, Pat and Richard Wilson and Helen and Graham Lovatt. Though there has been a lot of laughter throughout the season there has been some sadness too. John Hartley sadly lost his pony Dawn- a little chestnut mare who was a

powerhouse of grit, stamina and determination. We regulars all miss seeing them on the drives, Dawn’s legs working like pistons and always up at the front among the ‘big boys’. Joan Hall and Don Capewell have not been able to join us this season due to illness. John Stubbs, our trusty back car, has not been well recently and the latest news from his wife Mary is he’s waiting for tests but doing well. We hope this review has gone some way to giving all of you a flavour of what your society can provide for you. None of this could happen without the help and support of numerous people who do anything from baking cakes for post drive refreshments to driving lead and rear accompanying cars , to sitting in the middle of nowhere with stop watches and score sheets and a chair if they’re lucky. Recently a retirement presentation was made to John Jackson. John has been involved with BDS Area 15 for many years but has held the position of Area Commissioner since 2010. He has been a welcoming and enthusiastic commissioner and has always been committed to upholding our reputation of being an active and vibrant society. With his wife Anita (famous for her delicious scones and cakes) and his willing helpers ,he has planned and organised and cajoled people in to hosting events through a combination of affability, persuasion and his terrible jokes! Unfortunately this season John’s health has been a concern to us all. We are all glad to see him back on his feet but he has decided that, although he and Anita will continue to be active members he is unable to carry on in the capacity of Area Commissioner as he must preserve his health and Anita’s sanity!

Christmas Rally Drive from Red House Stables Four turnouts braved the appalling weather conditions for the last drive of the season from Red House Stables. Everyone entered into the spirit of Christmas and wore festive costumes which were later judged by Gwen and Mary. The weather held for the short drive around Darley Dale and Whitworth Park where we paused for photographs and then returned to Red House where our generous hosts Caroline and Peter, had provided mince pies, Christmas cake and hot mulled wine, which went down very well! The winner of the Fancy Dress Competition was Lynn Glossop who had made a tremendous effort with her Elf’s outfit and looked great! Well done, Lynn, and to all those who had made the effort, better luck next year!

Our Christmas Fun Day organised by Angie Shailer, was a great way to bring 2015 to a close. It was a very wet and windy day but members had fun long reining their horses through the indoor obstacles in fancy dress. Later they put to and tried their skills at driving the same obstacles. Hot soup, bread rolls, cups of tea and other Christmas goodies were available all day to help keep the cold out, thanks to Louise. Devon Annual Meeting was held at Hatherleigh Community Hall on December 17th. The meeting was well attended, events of 2015 were discussed and many ideas were put forward for 2016.

Evening meeting with William Reddaway, Tuesday 3rd November Our 2015 Autumn/Winter season of indoor gatherings kicked off with an evening meeting at Bere Regis Sports Club, where twenty area members and guests welcomed William Reddaway from Gloucestershire, whose talk about his ‘Ride Round England’ with his horse Strider was both entertaining and inspiring. There were many highs and lows on this impressive seven-month journey covering nearly 2,700 miles, to the four corners of England, all without the aid of a backup vehicle or crew. Such exploits as bringing a city centre tram system to a standstill, to miles of walking in hand, had the audience gasping with horror one minute and laughing out loud the next. The ride and William’s subsequent talks are raising funds for the Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre, Riding for Disabled Association and the Family Holiday Association and tonight’s audience showed their appreciation with a donation of £206, adding to the £75,000 already raised and towards a target of £250,000. After lunch, our outgoing AC, Peter Douglas, was presented with a special bottle of malt whisky, and an accompanying shot glass engraved with the BDS logo, in recognition of his years of work for our Area. A floral bouquet was presented to his wife Sue, with thanks for all her much appreciated support.

A very successful year was had by all and we celebrated this as usual at our Christmas meal at the Rettendon Bell. By far the most successful member has been Jessie Dudley Appicella who won the Harness Horse of the Year for the second year running. To mark this special achievement Area 17 presented her with a double whip reel.

We were honoured to have as our after dinner speaker, Mr Stan Harris, President of the Hackney Horse Society and MD of Cribb and Sons, Funeral Directors. He kept us enthralled with his reminiscences of the Funeral Business in the East End during and after the war years. Having recently passed Larkins Field, Brentwood it brought back fond memories of the old Brentwood Trade Shows. In 2016 we are hoping to entice the ‘Trade Boys’ back with plenty of sponsorship and special awards for Trade classes. So come on you Trade Boys and Girls don’t keep your trade turnouts hidden away bring them out and show us your wonderful vehicles.

We have already published our first half-yearly program on the web-site and you will notice that for the first time we will be running a BDS Hampshire Area show at New Park, Brockenhurst, on August 21. We have a schedule that includes something for everyone, and some Osborne Refrigerators and Victoria Food qualifiers for our showing members. Caroline Douglas is master-minding this event and if anyone has any enquiries please call her on 01590-682678. A schedule and entry-form for the show will be found on the web-site. Your committee have met on a regular basis over the winter period, and have been busy on a number of issues including representation to the Hampshire County Council regarding an equestrian strategy alongside one for cycling etc. Working with the New Forest Equestrian Association to ensure bridge surfaces on the New Forest are safe to cross with horses and arranging a clinic with world-champion pony pair driver Anna Grayson. We have also set up some training and a test day for the Road Safety Test and if there is sufficient interest we can run another programme later in the year. We have several drives organised and would be especially pleased to hear from anyone who would like to run a drive in their area. There are guidelines on how to do this on the web-site, or you can talk to Georgina Burrows on 02380283433 who will guide you through this. In the meantime, I hope to be out and about when the new season starts (our first drive is in March) and look forward to seeing you all soon.

Review Croft Castle 2015 Eight brave folks entered our event at Croft Castle on a beautiful October day. A new venue, a new event and new organiser! New Year is a distant memory and Spring has sprung. For some, it is a time for change and judging by the amount of lycra clad folk, huffing and sweating past the house this week, winter stews and comfort food have been exchanged for salads and juicing in pursuit of that summer body. For us horsey folk, it is the lighter evenings and no mud that we crave and after all I can always get Penny Richmond to let my apron out a bit. Now is the time to be checking your equipment, sometimes we spend so long with our equines shoeing, jabs, worming and feeding that we overlook our vehicles and harness. Taking the time to check all over your harness can be easily done with a good spring clean whether you have easy maintenance modern harness or traditional leather. Check all your buckles, holes and straps for wear as it could save a nasty incident. The same goes for your vehicles, basic visible checks on wheels, shafts and bolts should be done each time you pull out to use it but a good clean can give you the opportunity for a more thorough check. Lots of us now take advantage of the many quick release clips and fastenings available, just because they are there for your safety doesn’t mean that they do not require checking. I had two friends last year who had a trace come off due to

the pin dislodging from the safety shackle so it is so important to be aware. Our Easter social drive will be in the capable hands of Carol over at Stelling Minnis on Good Friday so we will keep our fingers crossed for a nice day as Easter is early this year. The London Harness Horse Parade follows on Easter Monday in our neighbouring county of Sussex and is celebrating 50 years of amalgamating the Cart horse and Van horse parades. This is a great day out as a spectator or entrant if you have a turnout that is well behaved in company as the parade does get very busy There are always some interesting vehicles on show and this year the entry fee is being refunded to all those who complete the final parade and commemorative rosettes and brasses to all exhibitors. We had an excellent response for the discounted road safety tests and eleven members will be taking their tests on April 17th so a huge good luck to them. I started carriage driving more than twenty years ago when I bought a friend’s 13.2hh Dartmoor X pony who came with a dog cart and show harness. My great pal Carol Boswell, daughter of the famous Gladys Dale, helped me get going – driving to the local pub and back was the great incentive! I had great fun bombing around the local countryside with a two-seater excercise cart. It had narrow motor bike wheels and when a tyre went flat my passenger’s side was bumping along the ground!

We fared somewhat better later in the month, both with weather and numbers when we met at Stephanie Dale’s just outside Tetbury for a drive along the Fosse Way and connecting lanes. A really good turnout of all sizes which included visitors from Avon. The hedgerows and trees were stunning and the sun really shone. This was followed by two indoor evening events at new venues with our regular winter skittles. The Bell at Purton Stoke with a good reputation for food did not disappoint and twenty members and partners had a great evening.

Letcombe Weekend Thanks to the very generous support and facilities provided by Mr and Mrs Martin Samuels the Oxfordshire BDS hosted an extremely successful two days of driving. In all 15 turnouts from all over the country came along and camped in a field and used stables owned by the Samuels, or took a B&B locally. Jane Samuels, June Collier and Gaye Kyle prepared the marquees (with a few strong assistants), with tea, cakes and food for the first night. On the Saturday morning Peter Kyle with Nina Speake as groom set off early to lay the course eastward over 19 miles of downland, byways and Ridgeway. Every turnout covered the ground and the mobile fish and chip bar arrived that evening to provide supper.

The following morning Peter and Nina set off again going westwards to lay the second course over similar terrain. After another tasty tea the lorries and tents were packed up and slowly departed. The feed -back was one of great enjoyment and an overall success with several promising to book in if the event were to be held in 2016.

Bennington Visit “On a rainy and very windy day Lincolnshire members visited Bennington Carriages for a carriage maintenance course. We were welcomed with tea, coffee and biscuits before heading into the workshop which was clean and warm, very civilised. After a tour of the workshop, which brought it home to us all just how much time, effort and research goes into each Bennington we began the hands on part of the course. Firstly we watched Simon taking a wheel off, checking the brake pads and looking at and replacing bearings. As we progressed we asked lots of questions and Simon patiently explained the reasons behind what he was doing. After a lunch of jacket potatoes, quiche, French bread, coleslaw and puddings with lots of chat about ponies, carriages, lessons and trailers we returned to the workshop and it was our turn to practice what we had learnt on Mary’s carriage. Dave, her husband, had secretly done

a very good job maintaining Mary’s carriage as the grease and bearings were all in excellent condition. Next we were shown how to check brake fluid and measure and fit a delayed steering arm. Along the way we picked up lots of tips on restoring paintwork, looking after tyres and general small maintenance tricks of the trade.

An unusually large crowd gathered on the 10 of November at the Raven Hotel at Prees for an illustrated presentation by the Hand family of Shropshire area events throughout the past year. Including the proud day for Russell Hand in the summer when he had been invited to take his coach to the Coaching Club meet at Chester. Members had been asked to help with the stewarding of the event which I know they all very much enjoyed. Our area lunch organised by Rebecca Taylor was held at Shrewsbury Town football stadium in December. Almost sixty members and friends enjoyed a seasonal meal followed by a raffle. Guest speaker Marin Horler dressed in appropriate livery and complete with coach horn gave a fascinating illustrated talk on the role of the mail coach guard.

Half way saw us at The Lamb at Edgmond where Edward Orgill had arranged for us to occupy part of the car park. While resting the horses, hot punch and warm mince pies were very welcome. A return to Newport via the same route seemed to go very quickly and after boxing up the equines, most hurried to The Barley to make sure they didn’t miss out on the soup and chips!

On the 1st of November Lizzie Lawrence once again organized the Anne Watson-Smithe memorial drive at Lake Vyrnwy, she reports “The day dawned wet and the whole area was shrouded in fog, as I made my way to the lake the fog became thicker and then just like magic the sun came out. Six turnouts had a wonderful drive around the lake in the most beautiful autumn sunshine enhancing the reds and golds of the trees. On their return the drivers had jacket potatoes with delicious fillings courtesy of Russell’s machine. £70 was added to the pot in memory of Anne.” th

So, if you have kept count, we had two teams, three pairs and four single turnouts. Room for more next year if you fancy blowing away the Winter Blues!

The raffle proceeds and the cash surplus from the food were put together, and a donation of £48 will be sent to the Air Ambulance. The ‘Stevo’ Trophy was presented to Russell Hand (horses) and the ‘Mince Pie’ Trophy to Felicity Stubbs (ponies), although the standard of turnout of all present was excellent considering the time of year. Tony Gregory reports on the Annual Boxing Day Carriage Parade “What a relief to have a dry day! As per usual, it was not clear how many turnouts might appear, but in the event there were nine, just enough to make a spectacle for the hundreds that turn up every year to see the meet of the Albrighton and Woodland Hounds. For some four decades now, carriages have mustered to appear in St Mary’s Street as soon as the hunt has left. Timing is of the utmost importance so as to appear before the public throng disperse. John Hendy lost no time in making sure that they weren’t disappointed! The following confusion saw the lead car juggling to be actually in the lead and gave a couple of non BDS member interlopers a chance to join the procession. Ah well, they were suitably informed of the need to join the BDS, so hopefully they will join us sometime as members. A couple of laps of the church and a brisk trot up the High Street and back and the parade duly followed the lead car with yours truly blowing the Hendy coach horn from atop his beautifully restored omnibus pulled by his chestnut Gelderlanders. The Hand family followed with a modern brake to a team of Friesian/Hackney cross horses all well turned out as usual. AC Philip Holder brought along a pair of Hungarian horses to a wagonette. Felicity Stubbs shone as usual with her Welsh C put to a traditional two wheeler with Avril Pluck grooming. The Rogers family brought a charming Shetland pair turnout ably driven by the youngest family member and Peter King kept up the Shetland numbers with his attractive four in hand. You could hear the crowd go “aaaaahhhh” as they passed. Sue Cole had gone to town with the tinsel and decorations for Sam the Man, and the Venables family also drove two single ponies.

The turnouts set off from the Raven Hotel at Prees for the drive via Tilstock village into Whitchurch. Russell and Pat Hands recently acquired original road coach was quite a sight as they led the turnouts into

the centre of the town. Organiser AAC Dot Moreland escorted the Mayor introducing him to the participants as he handed out the commemorative rosettes and brasses. The best horse trophy went to Tom Alison and the Billy Cliff memorial trophy to Russell Hand. Everyone enjoyed a glass of punch and a mince pie before returning to Prees. Due to a misunderstanding the marshals for the busy bypass roundabout crossing were not in place and AC Philip driving the lead car was wondering how to get everyone safely across. Fortunately a very large HGV stopped apparently to video the turnouts so effectively blocking the traffic and everyone was able to cross together without any problem. Horses boxed up, most of us took advantage of the carvery at the Raven while outside it had begun to rain which had thankfully kept off during the drive. Again many thanks go to those who gave their time to act as marshals.

2nd CIAT Euston is already booked, following our very successful Concours d’Attelage de Tradition in August 2015. To fully enjoy the whole event you may extend the weekend from Friday to Monday. Stables are provided, so early booking is essential to reserve your entry. We shall be using the same format as last year, (reports of which have been well documented in various carriage driving magazines and websites). This format has proved to be in accordance with the guidelines and rules of The Association Internationale d’Attelage de Tradition (AIAT) and readily accepted by the British driving Society. We are now feeling confident to welcome more classes but there will still be a limit of 30 turnouts. This is a competition for Traditionally built carriages only, preferably before 1945. A drive along Brean Sands was well attended, followed by lunch at the National Trust Cafe at Brean Cove. Nobody became stuck in the mud and the weather was kind. The First-Aid training day didn’t materialise but an interesting and enjoyable evening meeting was held at Fenix Centre when Jo Broadbent gave a talk on her experiences at the World Championships in Germany and Holland earlier this year. This was followed by a sociable fish and chips supper. The final drive of 2015 started from Sampford Farm and Mrs Hill entertained everyone to lunch afterwards in the old cowshed at the Farm. The year was rounded off with the Christmas lunch at Oake Manor Golf Club. The weather was good enough, although wet, for the New Year’s Day drive from Sampford Arundel to go ahead as planned, followed by a sociable get-together.

In December we held our Annual Meeting and Social. Our guest speaker, Caroline Douglas, entertained us with a most informative and light hearted talk on the digestive system of the horse! For anyone who did not attend you missed a great evening of fun. Caroline had a lot of audience participation with many of us being used as a particular part of the digestive system with additional “props”! We are now looking ahead to our 2016 driving season and we look forward to welcoming you to our events. We hope we can add to these as the year progresses. We are looking for new venues and members to join our Area Committee so please give me a call if you would like to offer some help or have a venue we could consider. We would also like to remind Surrey members about the Stella Hancock Memorial Driving Scholarship which has helped many Surrey members over the years to improve their driving skills and general driving knowledge. This Scholarship has been running since 1988 and was set up in memory of Stella Hancock, a former Assistant Area Commissioner for Surrey. If you would like to apply for the 2016 Scholarship please send your application to me in writing by 12th June giving reasons for your application and how you feel the Scholarship would benefit you. The Scholarship is open to Surrey (Area 29) members. Each application will be considered by the Area Committee. On passing through the off road 2.5 mile stretch of Abbots Wood the weather started to drizzle a little but fortunately the canopy of yellow and gold leaves kept most of the damp at bay and when we left the wood to return via the road, the sun had emerged. So we stayed dry.

Sunday 27th September – Dick’s Autumnal Drive from Havenswold A warm, sunny autumnal day met the drivers and horses on Dick’s first drive. This was a new drive from Havenswold which encompassed the usual off-road spring drive through Abbot’s Wood but with the addition of some quiet single track lanes and another off-road byway besides. This new route was 10.5 miles but there were two alternative shorter routes of 7.5 miles and 8.5 miles, which drivers could choose if they wanted.

2016 Achievement Award We would like to announce a new award for East Sussex BDS members: the 2016 Achievement Award. A rosette and prize will be awarded to the member who has achieved the most wins at shows and competitions. This will include Private Driving and Horse Driving Trials. In fact, any classes involving driving or harnessed horses (e.g. long reining etc). Points will be awarded as follows: 1st place = 6 points 2nd place = 5 points 3rd place = 4 points 4th place = 3 points 5th place = 2 points 6th place = 1 point The points will be totalled up at the end of the year and the member with the most points will be awarded the rosette. This award is for the member, not the horse. So if you win with different horses throughout the year, it will all

Havenswold BDS Drive 27th December 2015

Six turnouts left Havenswold at 10.30am with no less than seventeen adults, two children and a dog (a Dalmatian of course). There was an exciting party atmosphere among the people and the horses picked up this mood and trotted along enthusiastically. Sue Page led the way with her pony Lottie setting the pace, which some of the bigger Cobs worked hard to keep up with.

We arrived back at Havenswold two hours later to a delicious spread of tea, coffee, biscuits, chicken kievs and sausage rolls all provided by Dick’s wife, Mary.

The first part of the drive was through woodland and then out onto a country road. This led onto the new route added to Dick’s usual drive. This route offered wonderful views across the fields to the South Downs and the famous Wilmington Giant, a large white figure on the side of the Downs. Sue’s pony Lottie picked up the pace down the new byway and it was exhilarating trotting at speed between the hedgerows and through the puddles left by the previous week’s rain. Leaving the new byway behind, the cavalcade turned into Abbot’s Wood. When in Abbot’s Wood, the youngest member of the group required a wee break. So everyone stopped to wait for him. Though his mother had to remind him to face away from the group! We all returned to a wonderful spread of sausage rolls, cakes, tea and coffee which was overseen by Dick’s wife, Mary.

Havenswold BDS Drive 18th October 2015 Following the successful drive from Havenswold on 27th September, an impromptu drive was arranged for Sunday 18th October. It was a pleasant day weather wise and whilst there were fewer turnouts than on 27th September it was still a lovely drive. The part of the route encompassing the new by-way was closed for the winter season but was more than made up for by the addition of some peaceful country lanes. The scenery was lovely and there was very little vehicular traffic,

Kevin Jeffries with Beau

As many members were busy on Boxing Day, it was decided to hold an impromptu drive from Havenswold over the Christmas period on Sunday 27th December. There were five turnouts led by Kevin Jeffries with his lovely Friesian Beau who set up a spanking pace. Despite the heavy rain we had seen previously, the tracks were all firm underfoot. The drive started out cloudy but the sun did manage to come through. A tree had partially fallen in the woods across the path but had left an ivy covered archway for us to drive through and all the horses negotiated this with no problem. When we arrived back at Havenswold, Dick’s wife Mary had set out a festive spread all undercover for us to enjoy. A big thank you has to go to Dick Tanner and his wife Mary for hosting many lovely BDS drives for us throughout the year.

Friday 1st January 2016 – Golden Cross Drive This joint annual event held with the Oaks Driving Club saw a huge turnout again this year. This informal drive is a great pleasure to do at this time of the year. Turnouts were able to leave Golden Cross Equestrian Centre from about 9.30am with others following on as and when they were ready. The weather was kind to us as it stayed dry and was not very windy. The quiet country roads took in some lovely scenery including the picturesque village of Ripe. It was like something out of a Jane Austen novel. On return to Golden Cross we were able to enjoy some hot homemade soup courtesy of the Oaks Driving Club.

There is plenty of hard standing for unboxing and the drive starts out on the quietest of country lanes that leads directly into a wood on a gravel path. We want to try and plan some more impromptu pleasure drives from Havenswold and possibly other venues. In January we had our area meeting which was attended by about a third of our membership and we all had the opportunity of talking with our Chairman about what the BDS aims are for this year and the future. We explained our early year events and how they will need supporting as well as receiving ideas for more and some offers of help with stewarding and potential venues. Thanks to all those who did attend and hopefully all went away with some ideas about events and challenges for the coming months. We were able to announce the date of our annual Trec as well as our popular area show, once again being held at Jeff Osborne’s wonderful facilities and at the Weald and Downland Museum respectively. Dates for these are given below. We are also hoping to hold a “Super Trec” later in the year with more phases included, a full cones course, perhaps a simple dressage test as well as a longer drive and our usual range of skills, details will be given when finalised.

The 50th anniversary of this historic event, this year all entrants forward on the day will have the £25 entry fee refunded as well as the usual brasses and rosettes awarded. April 17th – BDS Annual Trec – held at Ryefield Farm, East Ashling. Entry forms and details will be on BDS website and Facebook. April 23rd – West Sussex BDS Area Show - Weald and Downland Museum. With the happy (and well received) reduction in the cost of diesel (and petrol) it is hoped that more of our members will be able to attend our events and shows. From a personal point I know it now costs £40 less to fill our lorry and this will enable us to travel up to about 60 miles further bringing more shows into range. We hope that many others are able to use this stretching of the budget to support some of our other areas shows and events that we may be in danger of losing due to low numbers. BDS Scotland are holding an exciting new event next year, Attelage on the 21st and 22nd May of 2016 at Glamis Castle Estate. Attelage is a competition created to encourage people to continue the practise of traditional driving. The competition is made up of three phases- Presentation, rode driving and cones. Attelage brings together the elegance of the show ring and enjoyment of drive outs. It will be run under the CIAT format. We are also holding a BDS Contemporary driving event (BDS CDE) for non-traditional vehicles which will run under the same format as the CIAT.

Hello All, Apologies for the lack of news from the Island. We have been active and I am glad to say we have more drivers taking part in our events. Over the past year we have had something each month with good support. The most popular events have been the indoor driving days which consist of a test of style and performance followed by cones and then hazards. At the last event we combined the cones and hazards which went down well as there was less waiting about. We hold these events indoors during the winter months. In the summer we have a few picnic drives which normally finish with a barbeque or soup, very popular and fun for those who do not drive but are so good to come and help on the competitive days. In April we had an evening with Ivan Kelly who usually judges our “dressage”. He gave advice on driving a test. In May we had a “have-a-go” day, when we had three or four quiet ponies with two pairs of reins on and encouraged people to have a drive. Through this we have gained some very helpful stewards. It is nice for them to have a chance to drive. In July and August we have two agricultural shows with driving classes followed by cone driving which the public enjoy. Some of our experienced members go to England to compete in driving trials with much success, and one turnout goes to France for some weeks. At Christmas our indoor driving event was in fancy dress. Malcolm and I held a Christmas get together for the area at home in our own redundant church on the Saturday before Christmas. The Church which had been unused for several years was decked out with holly, candles, Christmas lights and a huge Christmas tree. We were joined by members from Derbyshire, Cheshire and Lincolnshire. Mulled wine flowed and guests were treated to a Christmas buffet complete with roasted chestnuts, this was followed by the singing of Christmas carols. A special thanks goes to John Walker who roped in his talented electrician son Ian to sort out the church electrics immediately prior to the event. I can confirm the much loved season opener will remain the same with the Osberton drive confirmed on the 2nd of April. This initiative has come about due to the feedback over the past year, regarding how to encourage our young drivers to carry on in their interest in carriage driving as they hit that tricky time when they become young adults – with many new pressures on time and finances. By encouraging young adults to take part in the assessment day and aim for a bursary for training, the society will be taking a very positive step to develop their interest and skills. BDS JUNIOR CAMP BDS WALES are running their popular junior three day camp from Tuesday 23rd August to Thursday 25th August 2016, returning to the Monnington Stud, Herefordshire with its great facilities. The camp is also open to juniors who don’t reside in Wales. Details are still being finalised and will be released in the next newsletter. The Award’s Scheme works on points gained from driving events attended throughout the season. Point’s cards for juniors can be obtained from BDS Area Commissioners.

In December 2015 we ran another fun day at ISEC which in spite of horrendous weather and the problems of travel, was attended by five drivers and one new member who having recently injured himself came along to watch and meet people. The results are on the Scottish website and another two events (in the series of three) have been arranged for the spring. The dinner dance in November held jointly with the SCDA was well attended and the National Chair Angela Sixsmith attended both the Annual Meeting beforehand and the dinner dance so that she could meet and chat to as many Scottish Members as possible. At the meeting showing awards were presented and also the Chairman’s Quaich which this year was awarded jointly to Kim Pearson and her father and Caroline Watson and her mother our two most prolific private driving turnouts in Scotland and also both winners of Leaf Spring Awards.

In May we will be having our first Attelage in Scotland which is being organised by Aileen McDonald and will be at the wonderful venue of Glamis Castle. Glamis have hosted many club drives and outings there over the years organised by Heather Gow and the off road driving along tracks amongst the rhododendrons is magnificent. Enter if you can and if not come and help or watch it should be a lovely weekend and everyone will be made welcome. Also in 2016 Peebles Show will have a driving class again

Well at the time of our members reading this we hope everyone is well on their way to a successful BDS 2016 season. At the time of writing as with most of the UK, Aberdeen and Shire was suffering from the effects of horrendous flooding. Two of our respected members Jane and Ewan MacInnes of Maryculter Carriage Driving Centre in Maryculter were especially affected, with the farm being flooded three times in a week. Thank goodness all the livestock, sheep, Red Deer Hinds, Stags and twelve horses and ponies, had been moved to higher ground and indeed safety just In time. Speaking with Jane she explained that had they been away visiting friends or relatives on the day (30th December) that the River Dee quite literally sent its first wave of devastation across the farm then there would have been a whole different outcome to the carnage that Storm Frank left in its wake. But as with the rest of the country, the feeling of camaraderie, the rallying of the troops came to the fore with people coming from far and wide to help in the clear up, not just at Home Farm but right across Royal Deeside. The West Area has been quite quiet over the festive period. We had an excellent supper evening in November at the Stair Inn near Mauchline which was well attended and we are looking forward to our annual meeting at the Blair Inn near Auchentiber on Sunday 31 January which commences at noon with a short meeting followed by lunch. The showing season starts on Sunday 10th April with a new indoor show that we are organising called a Driving Extravaganza at Morris Equestrian Centre near Kilmarnock. We want to showcase all types of driving including a potential driving pony class, ride and drive, showing classes, donkeys, an arena challenge and heavy horse classes. We have been fortunate to secure the services of BDS Judge Johnathon Carnduff from Northern Ireland. Alistair Monro from Cumbernauld is our judge for the ridden Clydesdale class which is a Blair qualifier. Morean Hamilton from Hurlford is judging the Concours d’elegance. We were to have some new driving classses in May at an NPS show but unfortunately the show secretary has been taken seriously ill. The show is to go ahead but with a reduced schedule with no driving classses. We wish the secretary a very speedy recovery and hope that she will be well enough to run the show next year. We have organised our usual drive outs for the summer months and we intend to visit Balmoral show again. We hope that the Attelage to be held at Glamis Castle in May is a great success after all the hard work that will have to go into organising and running it. Please if you are not competing could you volunteer to help? All donations of help or sponsorship will be gratefully accepted. I am sure that it must stop raining some time although the West of Scotland has escaped the terrible floods that some other poor souls have experienced but it is snowing as I write this. Junior Commissioners report HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all ! I’m sure in 2016 you will have plenty of opportunities to enjoy your driving and try some new challenges! Don’t forget to get back in touch and let me know how you are getting on and if there is anything I can do to help you. I am very keen that as many of you as possible enter the BDS scholarship which will be on August 9th. This is always a great day out and the lucky winner of each age group has a £500 bursary to spend on training! The age groups are based on your age on the 1stof January 2016. The two scholarships for 10-13 and 15-17 year olds are generously funded by a legacy from keen carriage driver Brian Sims. There are updated guidelines on the website showing what you might be asked about and there is a separate award for the Best Driver on the day so keep practising your BDS rein handling! Don’t forget there is also the Portfolio award to enter for each age category and details can be found on the website for this as well.

We spent a very enjoyable and productive day finding out all about pairs driving as well as working on developing singles driving skills. them working together. We all watched the invaluable DVD on driving pairs by Jane McInnes over lunch time and later everyone who wanted had a good session driving the ponies as a pair with Wendy on dual reins sitting alongside. With Wendy’s encouragement everyone was really pleased with their pairs experience. They also improved their driving and understanding of schooling with singles by taking the reins with show pony Merlin (Penclose Wotsit) and FEI pony Mr J (Crossfield Glory). The day was hugely enjoyable and voted a great success. I have been delighted to have received some write ups by juniors for the newsletter and also that supporting adults have come forward with suggestions to enhance our provision for young drivers. Hello, my name is Callum. I’ve been carriage driving for just over 2 years and have lessons with Mark Evans LHHI (Light Harness Horse Instructor). I really enjoy driving and since day one I’ve been hooked. I used to ride as a child, in Pentre Riding Stables up in Craig-Y-Nos, but had a minor accident, I then searched Carriage Driving Lessons, and started from there! I drive many turnouts, single, pair (two horses next to each other), unicorn (a pair, and one horse again in front), and more recently tandem (two horses, one in front of the other). It’s weird, but so far I enjoy driving the tandem the most, possibly because it is the most

I have been on a BDS (British Driving Society) Drive which was fun, particularly seeing fellow carriage drivers and different carriages being used. We used a Bennington Two-Wheeler driven to a 12.2 hh pony, Merrylegs. I saw a variety of turnouts, including a Bennington Fun Bug driven to a haflinger. I have also helped Mark out on weddings with the Friesian Stallions, put-to an 1891 Sefton Landau, built by Offord and Sons of London, that experience was awesome. I also drove at the Llandovery Goes to War reenactment with ‘David Lloyd George’ recruiting soldiers for the war in the passenger seat. On my birthday last year, I took my family for a carriage ride with the Landau, from what I’ve gathered, they enjoyed themselves, and so did I! I visited Caroline Dale-Leech MBE LHHI at Red House Stables, Darley Dale and stayed in their B&B. It was amazing to see all the well-kept traditional vehicles including Landaus, Broughams, a mail coach and the Gay Gordon Road Coach.

I have also been to a few BDS Wales AGMs which was very political and a great experience. I listened carefully at fellow members debating and suggesting ideas, and they all voted on suggestions for the future of BDS Wales. I was pleased with the amount of members that attended, and was quite upset by the lack of junior members. I was lucky enough to meet the BDS Chairman, Angela Sixsmith at the AGM. I love the traditions of driving, particularly driving original carriages dressed in authentic livery. I am very pleased with my driving, I enjoy uploading up-to-date photos of my latest driving experiences on Facebook, and I always get good feedback from my peers as well as fellow carriage drivers.

Rain, rain and yet more rain! It has rained every day since the end of October! The high winds and driving rain have meant there has been no enthusiasm for outdoor activities, even drives, but the area did organise a training day for novices and juniors at half term and there was an excellent turnout of ten juniors and sixteen adults. Wendy Morris was wonderful and brought her two lovely Shetland ponies all the way up from Carmarthenshire for the group to learn about pairs driving. It was a really informative day as Wendy explained all about getting the ponies to work well together, harnessing and carriages. Everyone long reined the pair and had the chance to drive them but also learnt schooling techniques for driving ponies and had the chance to practice and improve singles driving before driving the pair. Thank you also to Emily Ham and Anthea for bringing their wellschooled ponies. It was tremendous fun as well as a great learning experience and definitely one to build on with another training day.

Our show went off extremely well. The weather gods shone on us and we had quite a good turnout. We held a day for interested people to come and see how easy it is to join in our events and had a good turnout and lots of interest. Our Halloween event, though not well attended, was great fun and everyone including the children drove the cones in great fashion. We ended the day with a barbecue and games such as bob apple and hunt the rats. (Cardboard ones I hasten to add)! We have had to unfortunately cancel several events due to lack of participants and are hoping that those of you who are in or near the area will be able to join us next year for rallies, events etc.. Our members come from a wide range of backgrounds and all are welcome and there is plenty of help and advice for those who need it. We are not going to be doing much this winter but hope to be out and about again in the spring and look forward to meeting old and new drivers. Here’s hoping that you have all had a great New Year and safe and happy driving in the year to come.

Margaret Carlisle presented a Gift Voucher to Eugene in recognition of his many years of service and hard work as Chairman of the Branch and wished him well in the days ahead. She said that she was delighted that Eugene had agreed to serve on the Committee.

The Annual General Meeting of the Northern Ireland Branch – British Driving Society took place on Monday 9th November 2015 at 8.00 p.m. in the Bridge Community Centre, Lisburn.

The Branch’s 2015 Charity was Alzheimer’s Society and Chest, Heart and Stroke has been chosen as the 2016 Charity.

Junior Essay: A Week to Remember by Josiah Rowlands,15 A Week to Remember! Back in the summer of 2014, I won the Brian Sims Award. I was awarded a bursary which I could spend at any BDS affiliated yard and I chose to go to Fenix Carriages in September 2015. There I was lucky enough to spend many hours improving my driving. I got to do a lot of work schooling singles with Mark as well as obstacles and cone work. I found this extremely useful and felt like I was able to walk away a much better driver. I got to do a lot of work learning how to get the horses to bend and how this would help with showing and driving trials. The horse will look, overall, much better in the show ring if it bends well on the circles or figure of eights and equally in obstacles or cones if the horse doesn’t fall in on the turns and corners. I got the chance to pretend, which was kind of hard, to do my own mini show for Mark. I won the class, lost the class and everything in between. The show was done coachman style and I was able to practice trying to get the horse to bend on the circles and turns for me. I also drove a few obstacles and cones two handed and also instantly saw again the benefit of getting your horse to bend on the turns. We put a tandem together for the first time with two of Joanna’s ponies which was exciting and challenging as I got to do most of the driving Not only was it the

ponies’ first time in a tandem, it was also my first time driving a tandem. I got the chance to drive the wheeler and leader as singles to get a feel for them and to try and make a choice which went where. We used rope traces, instead of normal traces in case something went wrong, and tandem spoons. I had to try and figure out and put on the tandems spoons on the wheeler’s collar without help. Many centuries later and a little bit of help, we completed harnessing up, put to and drove. I drove the

Daniel Williams from Tristar was down with his team for a bit of pre-show preparation training with Mark. Mark did a lot of work in the exercise vehicles with the team, mainly circles work and getting them to loosen up a bit. Despite getting wet grooming on the coach whilst Daniel drove his team around the lanes and in the school, it was still fun. It felt surreal putting to, to a coach and going for jolly down the lane. Probably one of my highlights of the week was being allowed to have a go at driving Mark’s team. It was a bit of shock for me when we were out exercising Mark’s team and he turned round and said it was my turn; challenge accepted my first time driving a team! I like speed and power so a four-in-hand is just up my street. The thrill of having four powerful horses at your finger-tips gives you quite an adrenaline rush. Also the added factor of something going wrong majorly adds to the excitement. There was one moment when a quick release carabiner broke on the swingletree as one of the wheelers kicked it. Something easily fixed, but it gave me an idea of how things could escalate out of hand if not spotted in time.

I also spent time in the workshop which I greatly enjoyed. I had to change the brake pads on Mark’s dressage vehicle and saw first-hand how a disabled driver’s carriage was put together after painting. I went to see where the carriages were painted when we went to pick up the disabled driver’s carriage in bits. I enjoyed seeing the carriage put together over the course of the afternoon. I picked up lots of valuable information like covering a screw with grease before screwing it into certain metals to prevent a chemical reaction. I also learnt it’s a good idea to grease the wheels of carriages regularly to prevent moisture getting into the bearings’ housing that might cause the bearings to rust

This award is open to anyone who exhibits a traditional type turnout on ten occasions or more in one season at a BDS Affiliated Show or BDS Area Activity (Northern Ireland – four occasions, Channel Islands– three occasions.) To take part please obtain a Leaf Spring Award card from the BDS Secretary. Enter all the details of your turnout including vehicle type, makers name and age, also your horse, pony or donkey details and details of the driver. Carry the card with you at the Show/Activity attended, and present it to the judge/steward to verify the details against your turnout and sign. Not later than 30th September 2016 post your completed card to the BDS Secretary. A BDS specially commissioned china plate, sponsored by Mr. John Vyse & Family, will be awarded at the 2016 BDS AGM to all participants who have met the criteria above. Note: Traditional type turnout means a turnout in which vehicle has the traditional profile of an identifiable type to resemble the design of a carriage built prior to the First World War. The vehicle may be made from modern materials but must have traditional style springing and carriage lamps. ♦ A Show/Activity will count as one occasion regardless of the amount of classes entered. ♦ The award is open to private driving and trade turnouts. ♦ The turnout owner and whip must be a current BDS member.

BDS Scotland Showing Awards

BDS Scotland’s annual AGM held on November 14th 2015 brought to a close this year’s driving season and the presentation of the BDS Scotland Showing Awards.

The showing awards were created as a way to show appreciation to drivers who have been committed to attending shows held throughout the year, working hard come rain or shine to produce the perfect turnout. Drivers are rewarded with a beautiful rosette and horse head trophy, kindly sponsored this year by Jacqueline Watson. Turnouts are given a Bronze award for attending three shows or more, a Silver award for attending five shows or more and a Gold award for attending seven shows or more. This year eleven drivers achieved a Bronze award and three drivers, Caroline Watson, Kim Pearson and Ann Rushton-Green achieved a Gold. As of next year these awards will be based upon how many events each driver has been to rather than the current set up of how many events each turnout has attended, as many of our drivers compete with more than one equine making it fairer for those still out and about each weekend.

Caroline Watson, her mother Jacqueline Watson, Kim Pearson and her father Jim Pearson were jointly awarded the Chairman’s Quaich for their continued dedication to attending and supporting as many of our shows as possible. These awards give drivers something to aim for throughout the season and the well-deserved recognition for achieving their goals. We all look forward to the start of next season when it all begins again.

Old Jack We are sorry to announce the passing of dear old jack at the great age of 36 years. Jack came to live with us at Springbridge with his owner Bernard Bradley who had become a BDS member many years ago. Bernard and Jack took part in many rallies, shows and parades with us around the county and as far away as London. During his time with us Bernard and jack joined the Springbridge RDA Group and when Bernard died 8 years ago Jack continued to live with us and carry out his RDA work. In September last year Jack took an active part in the 40th RDA Driving anniversary celebration. Sadly in December after only a few days of illness he died, but he will be sadly missed as he was a real character and gentleman. RIP Jack.
