Welcome to Leweston... Leweston’s motto, ‘Gaudere et Bene

Facere’ - ‘Rejoice and Do Well’

dates from the seventeenth century

and applies to pupils and staff alike. It suggests not only that if something is

worth doing, it is worth doing well, but

also that it is worth doing in the right frame of mind, one which is positive, outgoing and cheerful.

Courtesy, affection, a strong sense of community, self-respect, respect for

others and their gifts and respect for the

academic enterprise are qualities to

which Leweston pupils, at their best, aspire. The school prides itself on

offering quality education at a competitive price.

Leweston’s values are based upon a

supportive Catholic ethos, underpinned

by the Christian principles of

opportunity, respect and community and we welcome pupils from all

denominations and none. We believe

that education is for life and our aim is that all pupils should leave us

independent of mind and well equipped

with the skills they will need to excel in a changing world.

This prospectus provides only a

snapshot of life at our school; there can be no substitute for visiting Leweston

and experiencing first-hand what a vibrant community we are.

We hope to welcome you soon.

surroundings by experiencing them first hand and the children in the Nursery

venture outdoors every day come rain or shine. The staff at Leweston Nursery operate a ‘free-flow’ system which

enables all children aged two and above to access their learning either inside or outside.

By extending our teaching to include

the outdoors, making good use of our Enchanted Wood and our accredited Forest School status, we create

opportunities for children to develop

Being part of a wider school campus has

many benefits and the children aged 3

‘Rejoice and Do Well’ – ‘Gaudere et Bene Facere’ – the school motto

Leweston. The motto applies to pupils and staff alike and suggests not only that if something is worth doing, it is worth doing well, but also that it is

worth doing in the right frame of mind: positive, outgoing and cheerful. The resulting atmosphere at Leweston is both stimulating and inspiring for our boys and girls, from our youngest Nursery pupils to our departing Sixth

Formers, who leave as well-balanced young adults ready to take their place in the world.

Expectations at Leweston are high; pupils are challenged in their studies to achieve the best possible academic success. However, they also gain confidence by stepping outside their comfort zone and trying new

experiences beyond the classroom: be it exploring the natural world in the Enchanted Wood attached to the Junior Department; coordinating a volunteering programme, or negotiating the high levels of skill and

professionalism expected from the Leiths cookery course in the Sixth Form; or handling the rigours of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Throughout,

Leweston students are given outstanding pastoral care, where a dedicated team of staff aim to know and support every child. The backdrop to

Leweston’s exemplary academic and pastoral record and the jewel in our crown is the stunning 46 acres of beautiful Dorset parkland in which our school is set, three miles outside the historic abbey town of Sherborne.

This prospectus will give you a good flavour of life at Leweston, but it is no substitute for visiting the school and seeing first-hand what we can offer

Rose House is situated in the Manor House and

accommodates all the younger boarders (in Years 4 to 8). There are various Common Rooms available so

pupils wanting to take part in different activities don’t disturb others. In Year 9 boarders move into Glyn

House into dorms of 4 or 5; in this transitional year

they have access to a Senior Boarding Tutor, to bridge the gap between academic and boarding life. They

continue in dorms of 4-5 until Year 11, where they can expect to have single or shared rooms. They have

their own well-equipped separate Common Rooms as their boarding experience prepares them for the transition into the Sixth Form.

Healthy Eating

At Leweston we place great importance on the provision of a nutritional and balanced diet that is appealing to the pupils. They are given food

that is well balanced, always including a vegetarian option, a salad bar and fresh fruit. Special diets can be catered for.

Livery

Boarders are able to stable their horses at a livery yard nearby, allowing easy access to them during term time. The riding school has both an

indoor and outdoor arena, and arranges weekend dressage and jumping competitions in which girls can participate. Riding lessons are available from qualified instructors and the school has its own Equestrian Manager who overseas the Equestrian provision.

Sixth Form boarders at Leweston live on South Wing in Hamilton House. All full boarders have their own

individual study bedrooms, all of which have internet

On reaching the Sixth Form many of the pupils board, to take advantage of the social activities,

extracurricular activities and access to the school’s study resources in the evenings and at weekends.

To support the pupils and provide an essential link

between their academic and boarding lives, we have

introduced a new role of Boarding Tutor; this new role is linked to the National Minimum Standards (13.2). The Boarding Tutor will help deliver a continued excellence in pastoral care within the Boarding

Houses, ensuring that all girls feel supported and cared for. This is in addition to the existing Form Tutors that every pupil has.

Old girls of Leweston are known as Old Antonians. The school produces former pupils of the school. Details can be found on our website.

In 2017 changes to the GCSE grading system saw English Literature, Language and Maths move to a numerical grading system. Grades awarded in these

subjects have been converted to their A-C equivalents for ease of reporting.

Value Added

Leweston is a value added school and consistently ranks in the top 10% of schools (both independent and maintained) nationally for value added at

GCSE and A Level. This is based on a national referencing system administered by the Mountjoy Research Centre at Durham University. In real terms this means that a pupil at Leweston achieves, on average, one grade higher at

GCSE than the national average for a child of their ability with a further half grade at A Level.

University Entrance

Virtually all girls go on to Higher Education to study a wide range of courses at University and specialist Art and Drama Colleges. In 2015 and 2016 over 50% entered the Russell Group of Universities, including for example, Oxford, Cambridge, Cardiff, Durham, Edinburgh, U.C.L, Manchester, Nottingham, Bristol, Exeter, Birmingham and Warwick studying: Medicine, Biology,

Philosophy, Music, Mathematics, Economics, Classics, English, Modern Languages and Natural Sciences.
