Welcome

A huge welcome to the

6th Sherborne Literary Festival

We hope that you will find much to entertain you, inspire you, widen your knowledge or broaden your horizons in the diverse range of subjects on offer. As part of the organising team I have been privileged to listen to most of our speakers during the last two festivals; what I find particularly satisfying is going to an event in which I have little or no prior interest and then being hooked into the subject by the quality of the speaker.

local businesses for all their generous support; in turn please support all our sponsors and advertisers.

There is a small team who have given generously of their time to organise this festival for your benefit but they are hugely supported by both the team of volunteers who ensure its smooth running and the financial support of a vast number of sponsors who have ensured that we can keep the ticket prices at a very reasonable rate. We are very grateful to our

Giles Milton is the internationally best-selling author of nine works of popular history. His books have been translated into more than twenty languages and have been serialized on both the bbC and in british newspapers.

IN CONVERSATION wITH

bLanche GIrOUarD

Many will know of ysenda from her frequent, insightful and amusing literary reviews in the Spectator magazine. Author of The Real Mrs Miniver (about her grandmother Jan Struther) and Mr Tibbit’s Catholic School, her latest book Terms and Conditions is an hilarious account of life in girls’ boarding schools 1939-1979.

Giles’s works of narrative history rely on personal testimonies, diaries, journals and letters to tell the story of key moments in history, recounted through the eyes of those who were there.

A number of famous women were interviewed for this book, among them Arabella boxer, Amanda Craig, Josceline Dimbleby, valerie Grove, Fiona MacCarthy, emma Tennant, Ann Leslie, Artemis Cooper, katherine Whitehorn, Polly Toynbee, Judith kerr and Anne Heseltine. but famous or not, all are equally important to the story.

A Cornish slave boy held captive in Morocco; a Jacobean adventurer in Japan; a young German artist conscripted into Hitler’s war machine - his books focus on the stories of ordinary people who found themselves attempting to survive in extreme situations. His latest book, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, provides a fascinating insight into some of the less well known unconventional acts that helped towards victory in the Second World War.

This is not a history of women’s boarding schools. It’s not easy to say where, exactly, you would shelve it. It could be under memoir. Or is it more like anthropology?... The other option would be comedy, as it’s the funniest book you’ll read all year. Nicola Shulman

This is a return visit to Sherborne for this popular author and amusing speaker.

Sir Jeremy Greenstock joined the Diplomatic Service in 1969. He went on to study Arabic in Lebanon and was posted to Dubai and Washington DC. He later served in Saudi Arabia and Paris, worked in bosnia and the balkans in the 1990s, and returned for a second stint in Washington before becoming the Foreign office's Political Director in London.

Rory is one of our leading travel writers. With 13 books to his name he has ranged far and wide in his travels and each of his accounts brings to life the great characters he meets in each destination. Ranging from a bus journey from Istanbul to India during the Hippie period right through to his recent escapades with some really strange people in the very Soviet noncountry of Transistra he captures the essence of his surroundings and the people who inhabit them.

He is best known for his roles as uk Permanent Representative to the united nations in new york, from 1998 to 2003, and then as uk Special envoy for Iraq from 2003. This placed him centre stage during the run up to the Iraq War and he witnessed at first hand its tremendous impact. His book Iraq – The Cost of War, written about these experiences, was blocked for many years by the Foreign office. His views continue to have great relevance to today.

Tickets: £15 7.00pm DIGBy HALL

His latest book, Pictures of You – Ten Journeys in Time, is a change from his usual genre but it still involves travelling vast distances and hearing forgotten voices that echo from the depths of time, but without actually leaving an address in central London. Rory’s wonderful imaginative writing makes for a very evocative journey.

Last year’s talk by noel ‘Razor’ Smith on his experiences within the penal system was one of our most successful and popular events. Following up on that, this year we have Jonathan Aitken who has long been a highly articulate advocate for positive reforms within our prisons and for better rehabilitation facilities for exprisoners.

Rory Stewart has packed a great deal into his life already as a soldier, traveller, journalist, diplomat and, most recently, MP for Penrith and The border. He is also a great walker and has covered some impressive journeys in his time. From 2000 to 2002 he travelled on foot through rural districts of Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan and nepal, a journey totalling around 6000 miles, during which time he stayed in five hundred different village houses. This resulted in his book The Places in Between. but his latest book The Marches recounts a long walk rather closer to home and slightly less arduous or dangerous; it is a fascinating account of his walk, often accompanied by his 90 year old father, between their respective homes in the border areas of england and Scotland.

In 1974 he became a Conservative Member of Parliament spending eighteen years on the backbenches until being appointed Minister of State for Defence in 1992. He joined the Cabinet as Chief Secretary to the Treasury in 1994. His political career ended when he told a lie on oath in a libel action. Subsequently he pleaded guilty to charges of perjury and served a seven-month prison sentence in 1999. Jonathan Aitken is now an author of 15 books, a broadcaster, columnist, lecturer and campaigner for prison reform.

JOShUa LeVIne

Since Joshua’s much enjoyed appearance at last year’s festival a lot has happened in his life. Joshua has been the historical advisor to the major Hollywood film Dunkirk, providing many of the individual stories on which the narrative is based and ensuring the authenticity of the historical facts on which the director Christopher nolan has staked so much.

At kite’s nest Farm in the Cotswolds, one of the very first organic farms in the country, the cows (as well as the sheep, hens and pigs) all roam free. They make their own choices about rearing, grazing and housing. Left to be themselves the cows exhibit personalities as diverse as our own.

As a result of this fame Joshua has, of late, had wide exposure on Tv, on radio and in the national press. His background as a lawyer ensures he is always fascinating to listen to and of course there is a great deal of material from which he has drawn so many interesting individual stories from this amazing national achievement. His recently published book of the same name also tells us much of the background to the making of the film and the director’s drive for authenticity.

The farm is run by Rosamund, together with her brother Richard and her partner Gareth. They produce beef and lamb from 100% grass-fed animals which are butchered and sold on the farm. Her book The Secret Life of Cows was first published by a small farming press in 2003; it received many rave reviews and now has been published by a major national publishing house. As a result of her talk you may well look at cows and sheep with a different eye!

In 1982, during the Falklands War, Simon Weston was serving with the Welsh Guards and was on the RFA ship Sir Galahad when it was bombed. Many of his fellow Guardsmen lost their lives; Simon survived but with 46% burns. His face was unrecognisable. He endured years of reconstructive surgery and had to overcome considerable psychological trauma.

Gulwali Passarlay was 11 years of age when his doctor father was killed in Afghanistan and his mother decided to send him and his brother away for safety. very shortly afterwards they were split up and his book The Lightless Sky is a fascinating and inspirational account of his travels culminating, after many adventures and against all the odds, in a reunion with his brother in england over a year later.

Since then he has become an advocate for many charities, including those for the Services, those living with disfigurement and disadvantaged young people. He has written best-selling autobiographies and a series of novels. He has frequently appeared on radio and Tv, particularly in his native Wales, and has presented his own radio show. He was appointed an obe in 1992 and then elevated to Cbe in 2016.

Since then he has completed his education at Manchester university and has become something of a figurehead and spokesman for refugees and other disadvantaged young people. His stated ambition is one day to return to his home country and become President; until then he is certainly contributing enormously to his community in and around bolton.

Simon will appear in conversation with David Fitzgerald of bbC Radio Devon, as part of the Schools’ Programme at Sherborne Girls’ School but there will also be 150 tickets available for the general public.

ben Freeth became high profile news throughout the world in 2007 when he and his farming father-in-law, Mike Campbell, took Zimbabwe’s President Mugabe’s government to the Southern African Development Community’s (SADC) regional court. The charges were that the government had unlawfully seized their farm, violated the SADC treaty by denying access to the courts and engaged in racial discrimination and violence against white commercial farmers and their farm workers. They won their case but this resulted in the abduction and brutal torture of ben, Mike and Mike’s wife, Angela, followed by their homes, their workers’ homes and their factory all being destroyed by arson.

natalie Haynes is well known for her highly amusing routine on bbC Radio 4 in her own show Natalie Haynes stands up for the Classics. Her event at the festival will be a routine based on her radio show and will appeal to all ages both for widening our knowledge of classical literature and for providing some wonderful entertainment. She appears regularly at literary festivals and always proves to be very popular, surprising many who had no previous interest in the classics. She has appeared on the edinburgh Fringe and other festivals as a stand-up comedian, and has been a panellist on bbC Radio 4’s Wordaholics, Quote … Unquote and The Book Quiz, a reviewer on Front Row and a judge for the booker Prize for which she claims to have read 151 books.

ben has authored 2 books, Mugabe and the White African (subsequently made into an award winning documentary of the same name) and When Governments stumble: Lessons from Zimbabwe’s Past – Hope in Africa’s Future. ben’s main focus is on restoring justice, the rule of law and human rights in Zimbabwe.

AND THE

LittLe Machine

one of the world’s leading Shakespearean actors, Michael Pennington appeared triumphantly as king Lear in new york, his performance on a par with his great predecessors, Paul Schofield and Sir John Gielgud. In 2016, he reprised the role in a major uk-wide tour.

Roger will be familiar to most people from his many years hosting bbC Radio 4’s Poetry Please, which really brings alive the works of so many different poets to all generations. Roger is joined by the band LiTTLe MACHine to provide a wonderful finale to the Festival when he recites many of his poems with a musical backing from the band. This will be a two-act performance.

King Lear In Brooklyn is Michael’s meditations on grappling with Shakespeare’s greatest role, and gives a fascinating insight into the punishing mental and physical impact the role can have on those who are brave enough to take on the challenge.

Roger has a huge repertoire of works but he has remained popular with a wide audience over many years with his wonderful use of words and humour to make poetry really appealing to all. Many will also remember Roger when, back in the 60s, he was in The Scaffold and there will be a certain reminder of those days during this highly entertaining event.

Containing sharp reportage on the time he spent in brooklyn, Michael examines the relationships between the cast and the characters they play, and explores the director’s approach to Lear and that of the other actors. We see the production develop and unfurl through the eyes of an english actor playing the lead in an otherwise allAmerican cast.

Schools SchOOLSProgramme PrOGraMMe Sue Cameron

encouraging the young to develop a love of reading and writing is one of the main aims of the Sherborne Literary Festival. To this end we have invited a selection of authors to visit our schools and talk about the art of writing and their latest books. Some of them will also include workshops to challenge the young to create some literature for themselves. We are delighted that we have received generous sponsorship and support which have enabled us to compile a varied and lively programme. We are particularly grateful to Sherborne Abbey Festival, Sherborne Girls and The Simon Digby Charitable Trust.

Gulwali Passarlay - the LIGhtLeSS SKY

Gulwali Passarlay will talk about his journey of escape from Afghanistan to a new life in britain, which he has graphically and movingly described in his book The Lightless Sky. After his father was killed his mother sent him and his brother as refugees on the long and dangerous journey to what she hoped would be a safer life. Incredibly he made it and is now involved in much charitable work particularly with young people.

Simon Weston - WaLKInG taLL

Simon Weston will be in conversation with his friend, Radio Devon disc jockey David Fitzgerald, with whom he co-wrote four children’s books, A Nod from Nelson, Nelson to the Rescue, Nelson at Sea and Get Fit with Nelson. In 1982, during the Falklands War, Simon Weston, a Welsh Guardsman was on board the landing craft Sir Galahad when she was bombed. He survived but with 46% burns. His message is one of achievement, triumph over adversity, of seizing the moment and moving forward positively. His autobiography, Walking Tall was no.1 in the best selling list. He is an inspiring and moving speaker with an infectious sense of humour and an irrepressibly positive attitude to life. In 2016 he was awarded the Cbe for his charitable work and was awarded the outstanding Contribution Award at the 2017 Soldiering on Awards. 29
