Great Pride... ... that I write my first newsletter article as Principal of Sherborne International. I also feel that I am extremely fortunate to lead such a talented group of teachers, boarding and support staff at the school, and I am sure you would like me to begin by thanking them all for taking such excellent care of your son or daughter.

I use the word “excellent” advisedly, as following on from our very positive British Council inspection in November, we were inspected between 19th and 22nd January this term by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI). All schools are inspected by the Government, and the ISI represents the Government when inspecting independent schools. These inspections are very detailed and cover all elements of school life such as governance, senior management and the quality of boarding and teaching. There are, in fact, nine categories and I am delighted to say that Sherborne International achieved the rare honour of being categorised as “excellent” in every single area of school life. This is something of which we are justifiably proud, as it is difficult to achieve the top grade in all areas, although obviously it is something that all schools aspire to. Whilst thanking all staff for what has been an extremely positive term, I must not, of course forget the contributions made by our agents, parents, guardians and the students themselves. I have always believed that, during my many years at the school, we are extremely fortunate to have
such a positive, friendly and determined group of students, and this year is no exception. I would like to conclude by saying how very much I am looking forward to welcoming students back to school. Similarly, I look forward to speaking to, telephoning, emailing, Skyping, and welcoming to the school as many parents, guardians and agents as possible. It is a great pleasure and honour to be able to work with you all. My next marketing trip will be to Beijing in early May and I will be more than happy to meet any parents there who wish to discuss the progress of their son or daughter. Academic Report
THE SPRING TERM STARTED ON AN ESPECIALLY POSITIVE NOTE WITH THE SUCCESS OF THE ISI INSPECTION. LIKE ALL OTHER ASPECTS OF SHERBORNE INTERNATIONAL, THE QUALITY OF ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT WAS FOUND TO BE EXCELLENT. THE INSPECTION REPORT EMPHASISED THE COMMITTED ATTITUDES TO LEARNING THAT COULD BE SEEN AMONG THE STUDENTS, LEADING TO IMPRESSIVE PROGRESS BOTH IN ENGLISH AND IN THE RANGE OF SUBJECTS THAT THEY STUDY. IT ALSO DESCRIBED THE CRUCIAL ROLE OF OUR TEACHERS IN ENABLING ALL THIS TO HAPPEN AND IN MOTIVATING OUR STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE ACADEMIC SUCCESS. The early part of the Spring Term also saw our 5th Form (Year 11) students take their mock I/GCSE examinations. It was very encouraging to see how well many of them managed to do. Careful
revision played an important part in their success, whereas some students who had not spent sufficient time preparing for the mock examinations found that their results were not as good as they might have wished. Afterwards they could see what they needed to do to improve for the actual I/GCSE examinations in the Summer Term. All 5th Form students were seen individually following the mock examinations and again later in the term, and targets were set each time for improvement. Students in the Junior, 3rd Form (Year 9) and 4th Form (Year 10) classes have also been seen individually to discuss their progress, and they too have been given academic targets to work towards. As well as mock examination results, there has been a range of other student achievements. In January, we learned that the vast majority of our candidates in the Cambridge English examinations (Key and Preliminary) that took place in December had been successful, a number of them achieving Merits and Distinctions. In February, 46 students entered the UKMT Intermediate Mathematics Challenge. All of them did very well, with sixteen obtaining the Gold Award. Fourteen have gone through to the next round, where they will be competing against students from over 50 countries, and one has gone through to an even higher level of
challenge, the Maclaurin Olympiad. At the time of writing, we await the results of students who have participated in the British Physics Olympiad. In addition, all 5th form students on the two-year I/GCSE programme have been prepared for the Edexcel Functional Skills in ICT Level 3 examination. When you receive this term’s report for your son or daughter, please encourage him or her to take careful note of the comments and recommendations given by teachers for improvement. In addition, parents of 5th Form students will be sent a list of estimated grades for next term’s I/GCSE examinations. 5th Form students will need to find time during the holidays to do work that their teachers have set them and to prepare for the examinations, which start very soon after the beginning of term. King’s House boys have had another pleasing few months over the Spring Term. The students have enjoyed a number of school excursions which have been both sociable and cultural. These have included a trip to Taunton and an excursion to Salisbury, which allowed the students to tour the famous Salisbury Cathedral, visit the local attractions, shops and restaurants. There has also been an optional cinema excursion, and an optional Yeovil shopping excursion. During the weekend, the boarding staff run a Film Club, which allows us to take full advantage of the fantastic projection systems, showing the latest DVD releases, as well as some all time favourites. This year the most popular of all the films were ‘Space Jam’, ‘Social Network’ and ‘Inception’. Throughout the term, the students have also continued to participate in a number of extra-curricular activities, which allow the students to have a break from their academic commitments, enjoy their free time,
and the activities available allow the student to get the correct balance of exercise, try new sports and make new friends in the process. There have also been a number of school sport fixtures across the term, including Football, Basketball and Badminton events. The students have been very dedicated to their sporting commitments, which has shown in the results of the teams, collecting a number of impressive wins across the calendar. The King’s House boys have also participated in a number of Inter House Competition events, including Badminton, Creative Writing, The Pancake Race and The Swimming Gala. Danny, Yusuke, Charles, Jeremy and Vladimir all took part in The Maths Challenge in February, with Danny collecting the highest score. At the Park School in Yeovil, Baron and Mio both participated in the Public Speaking Competition. It was also extremely pleasing to see a number of the boys taking part in the Sherborne International Music Concert. Jack, Gary
and Suku all showcased their musical talents in front of guests and peers in The Greenfield Hall in February. I have also been very pleased to welcome two new students to the boarding house, Joe and Jim, and the other boys have helped them settle in very quickly. Indeed, we have an extremely friendly group of young students in King’s this year. However, for the majority they need to begin to focus on their forthcoming examinations. The Spring holidays are a good time to concentrate on examination preparation and revision for next term.

Westcott House
InIJanuary n January we welcomed 7 new girls in to Westcott in years 3 and 4. They have all settled in well and made new friends amongst us. We also celebrated Chinese New Year by decorating our common room and several girls cooked meals in the House. Our girls continue to make birthday cakes to celebrate each other’s birthday in the House. Recently we held a whole School BBQ for Sunday lunch in the Westcott grounds, and our 4th year Duke of Edinburgh girls prepared an Easter egg hunt for the junior girls and boys from Grosvenor House. Our junior girls continue to enjoy their activity on a Sunday morning, helped by our Duke of Edinburgh girls. Activities this term have tended to be held indoors because of the weather, but the girls have nevertheless enjoyed activities ranging from mug painting, to braiding and making chocolate Easter nests. Westcott has been prominent in whole school activities. Vanessa in the 5th form won the Inter School Public Speaking Competition, and Westcott is also well represented in the recent Maths challenge and the upcoming School drama production.

THE GROSVENOR HOUSE STUDENTS HAVE NOT ONLY BEEN STUDYING HARD IN THE CLASSROOM AND DURING PREP SESSIONS, BUT THEY HAVE ALSO BEEN VERY BUSY TAKING PART IN A MULTITUDE OF OTHER ACTIVITIES. Sporting pursuits are an important part of life at Sherborne International. Sport is of fantastic benefit to the students’ health, it allows them to learn new skills, it develops team work abilities and also provides opportunities to learn and practise the English language. Sport is greatly enjoyed by the Grosvenor boys and their participation in a range of sports is always encouraged. This term they have enjoyed a varied sporting programme with football being the key focus of the sporting agenda. Grosvenor House students form the Under-14 football team. They train together every week and also play a number of matches against other schools, where all the boys are involved. This term there have been three fixtures for the Under-14 team, all of which have been against a side from Sherborne School. The team have worked hard and made some good progress over the course of the term. The team struggled in their fixtures but they were playing against more experienced teams with larger squads. However, the Grosvenor boys showed fantastic spirit and always played their best right up until the full-time whistle. In addition to football the Grosvenor students have been participating in a weekly cricket skills session in the sports hall.

Grosvenor House Many of the students begin with little or no knowledge of the game of cricket and it is not an easy game to learn. Developing some of the skills in the Spring Term helps the boys to be better prepared for cricket in the Summer Term and potentially play in fixtures against other schools. Ultimately this will also mean that by the end of the school year the boys are able to make more progress, than they otherwise might have, with their cricketing ability. This will serve them well next year as most will go on to schools where cricket is an important sport. The boys have also had a weekly session of varying indoor team games. This term has also seen Grosvenor students take part in the Inter-House Badminton competition and the Inter-House Football competition. In addition, towards
the end of the term, some students also swam for their sporting houses in the Inter-House Swimming Gala. As part of the Wednesday activities programme boys have taken part in the Soccer Skills Clinic, Ten-Pin Bowling, Golf, and Fencing. The boys have continued to enjoy the facilities and recreational pursuits available in and around the Boarding house. Football, basketball, table football, table tennis, board games and the PlayStation are all popular pastimes during the students’ free time. The students have been on a number of excursions outside Sherborne, for example the cinema in Yeovil, the @Bristol interactive science centre in Bristol, a trip to Taunton where they went bowling, and a visit to Salisbury. The boys had a tour of Salisbury Cathedral which included exploring the roof spaces and climbing up the tower after
negotiating narrow winding spiral staircases up to the base of the Cathedral’s spire, 225 feet above ground level, where they squeezed through a small door to the outside to admire the panorama above the city and surrounding countryside. As ever the term has been a busy one and lots has been accomplished. I hope the students enjoy a couple of weeks rest and we all look forward to a fun, rewarding and hopefully sunny Summer Term when we return.

JANUARY 6TH 2016 MARKED THE 5TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNOFFICIAL OPENING OF
MOWAT HOUSE The start of the Spring Term was marked by study leave and mock examinations for the senior students and a studious air settled over the House. We were also visited by a team of inspectors from the ISI and the girls took great pride in showing them around Mowat. The girls also made the most of opportunities throughout the term to attend Film Club, use the gym and visit local places such as Taunton and Salisbury.

The hard academic work did not stop in February, with mock results returned and targets set, the girls had a renewed sense of determination for their studies. Once again they enjoyed themselves during their free time; celebrating Chinese New Year with a meal out in a local restaurant and Valentine’s Day by sharing flowers. The artists in the house had a wonderful time visiting the Tate Britain and Tate Modern Galleries in London. March has been the busiest month so far for the girls, balancing studying for their summer examinations with a full social calendar. At the start of the month the whole House visited Salisbury for some shopping and to see the impressive cathedral. A few of the girls from Mowat have been involved in various inter-house sports events such as the Swimming Gala and Badminton. Some of them have also represented the school at netball, badminton and football fixtures against other schools. Each girl has contributed to the Boarding House community in her own way through being involved in the Student Council, Common Room Committee, Dining Hall Committee, Debate Club and Book Club. Next term will be even busier with IGCSE and GCSE exams just around the corner, I hope they manage to fit in some study whilst enjoying their Spring vacation.

It has been an action packed Spring Term. Mock I/GCSE examinations featured heavily at the beginning of term and the boys were prepared for six days of determination and hard work. Cheapside is quite a sporty house with the majority of boys playing for one of the sports teams. It is enjoyable to hear the boys’ stories about their sporting achievements. Congratulations to Daniil who won a bronze medal in the Inter-house Swimming Gala, also to Max and Eric who contributed points to their sporting houses. Jimmy has been preparing for his confirmation which took place at Sherborne Abbey with Mr Hardaker, the Principal, also attending the ceremony. It was an honour to witness Jimmy’s confirmation and baptism. It has been a fantastic year so far and the boys’ independent and mature attitude towards their learning, and the overall respect and dignity they have for one another in Cheapside have been most impressive. Wishing them a restful but productive holiday, revising for their exams in the Summer Term.

Senior Activities
Lent Term Activities
During the Spring Term, the students have continued to participate in a number of extracurricular activities. There have been 11 activities available for the senior students. The attendance figures have been excellent again this term, and it has been very pleasing to see so many students trying new activities for the first time. Fitness Club, Basketball, Badminton and Swimming have remained the most popular across the timetable, with a number of students showing great ability in each. Our students have a dedicated attitude towards health and fitness, with a large number attending Fitness Club, and the two weekly Open Fitness sessions. Students who have taken up new activities have shown excellent progress, which has been especially evident in Boxercise, with Vova C receiving many compliments from his Boxercise instructor. A number of the dancers have also made good progress, including Paula, Emma, Elina and Julien. Running Club has been improving week by week, with a number of boys training for the Sherborne 10K race, under the tutorage of Mr Holroyd.

Boys’ Sport
The boys continue to surprise us in sport. They surprise us with their talent, their determination, their love of sport and, importantly, they surprise us with their ability to embrace challenges. This has been so very evident over the past term.

Football and Basketball have continued to flourish. The 1st XI Football team has gone from strength to strength, winning against schools such as Millfield and Milton Abbey. The 2nd and U14 teams have also enjoyed some famous victories and progressed immeasurably from boys who had never kicked nor wanted to kick a ball, to veritable football fanatics. The U16 Basketball Team has shown a comparable work ethic and desire to improve. They have played tough opposition, lost games by 1 or 2 points, but have remained as eager as ever. Recreational Badminton and Table Tennis sessions for the 5th formers have proved popular to those who are more suited to racket and bat sports. The challenge of the Ironman competition was once again embraced by the 4th formers. There were some herculean performances, particularly from Young and Mineyuki who were neck and neck until the final week, when Mineyuki managed to win the competition by the smallest of margins. Great teamwork and camaraderie were evident amongst all the boys, as they cheered on their friends, even though they were competing against them. The boys all learnt a great deal about themselves, not just how fast, strong and fit they are, but how supportive, how determined they can be. The boys have shown a great competitive spirit in many Inter House events this term, including Football, Badminton, Table Tennis and Swimming. The impressive display from Lapping House boys in particular was a joy to witness, with some outstanding swims from Ilya, Bolt, Julien, Smithy and Sasha K. Some of the greatest sporting moments this term have come from students beating all the odds to surpass even their own expectations. Hale trained hard for months in order to run in the Sherborne 10 Kilometre race. He loved the running and even managed to smile most of the way, (a feat not even professional athletes can achieve.) Those are just a few examples of how the students are developing and growing in to young adults through sport. The School is very fortunate to be able to witness these positive changes in the students every day.

The senior girls had the option of different activities on their sport timetable and many girls created their own fitness programmes which they could follow in the gym. This was so popular that most of them continued to follow their programmes in their free time at weekends too. Netball continued on the programme this term and the girls played matches against Milton Abbey, Bishopstrowe, Sexey’s and Chilton Cantelo schools.
The Inter-House Netball Competition involved every girl in the School. They all took part in skills drills where extra points could be gained for their House. The matches involved girls from all year groups as each sports House had two teams playing. The younger students have had a variety of activities this term. They too continued with netball and had matches against Leweston, Milton Abbey, Bishopstrowe and Sexey schools. All the students who joined the School in January played in a Misstraining Isobelsession Davison friendly against Bishopstrowe schoolSport - an ideal Head of Girls’
opportunity for them to play in their first competitive event for the School. The younger girls have also been playing unihoc, badminton, indoor football and multi skills agility training. This wide variety of activities have allowed some of the girls to show they have some unexpected skills. Several girls are very talented at skipping both on the spot and travelling forwards. At the end of term the girls played a friendly football match against Leweston School.

students not only studied the large collection of Turner paintings, but also gained an extensive overview of the Tate’s collection from the fifteenth century to the modern day.

Pancake Race
Chinese New Year 2016 ue to the bad weather on Shrove Tuesday, the Inter-House pancake race was postponed until the following day, weather permitting. Fortunately, the sun was out on the Wednesday with the pancake race set to go ahead. The race format was slightly different from previous years with the introduction of ‘flip zones’, which reduced the likelihood of foul play. Each team had to run a relay race with every participant having to perform one flip inside the ‘flip zone’. The race started spectacularly well with everyone abiding by the rules, making sure proper flipping of the pancakes was being performed. The race finished with Macnaughten House, the winners, but all praise to the students who played their part in this entertaining event.

To mark the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Monkey, students and staff from Sherborne International celebrated at a local restaurant with a delicious meal. The students and staff enjoyed a four course traditional banquet dinner, which included crispy aromatic duck, sizzling beef, sweet and sour chicken, prawns with asparagus, lemon chicken and sweet toffee bananas for dessert.

The Public Speaking Competition for International Students A number of local schools participated in the eleventh annual Public Speaking Competition hosted at the Park School in Yeovil this year. Two students represented Sherborne International:
Spring Concert Sunday 7 February Twelve talented students gave individual musical performances in the Greenfield Hall when the appreciative audience heard classical and modern music played on a variety of instruments including the piano, the violin, the double bass, the guitar, the saxophone, the flute, the drums as well as some beautiful singing.
Vanessa Lock, gave a confident presentation on Feminism for the support of equal rights for women and girls everywhere. Vanessa spoke third from the end of the competition. Her talk, calmly yet cogently argued, must have touched the hearts and minds of her listeners, for she was chosen as the overall winner.
Baron Li had prepared a powerful talk on the ‘Evolution of Sport’, the worldwide explosion of interest in the online game ‘League of Legends’. Both students spoke without notes, controlled their PowerPoint presentations skilfully, held the attention of their audience and answered questions from the floor with authority and assurance. Congratulations to Baron and Vanessa!

SPRING TERM 21/22 January 11/12 March SUMMER TERM Two flexible exeats Two weekend exeats per term are allowed (except Autumn Term in which three exeats are allowed). It is helpful if students choose the above dates for exeats. All exeats commence from 12.10 on Saturday. Students must be back by early evening (approximately, 20.00) Sunday. Prior permission for the exeat must be obtained from the Senior Housemaster/Housemistress by the previous Thursday. Exeats are NOT compulsory and students may remain at the School.
PERMISSION WILL ONLY BE GIVEN TO STUDENTS VISITING PARENTS, FAMILY MEMBERS OR GUARDIANS (ALL AGED 25 YEARS AND OVER).
