IT IS WITH SOME SADNESS THAT I WRITE MY LAST LETTER TO YOU ALL AS THESE ARE MY FINAL WEEKS AT SHERBORNE INTERNATIONAL AS PRINCIPAL I write mainly to showcase what a spectacular term it has been. The new students have settled in really well and become part of the community sharing their ideas and plans. The new uniform looks very smart and we have had many positive comments relating to its design and comfort.

Interviews have started for many for their next schools and reports look very good with positive progress being made in all subjects. We also had an excellent inspection by the British Council which once again proved outstanding pastoral care and an educational provision that excels in the realm of Integrated Language Learning as well as subject specialist learning. This is, of course, all down to consistently good teaching and I thank all the staff for their daily planning and teaching which allow your children to reach their potential and achieve such great individual success.

Mr Philip Hardaker is in charge as Principal until the new Principal arrives and I am certain under his care the School will go from strength to strength. It only remains for me to thank you all for your trust and interest in Sherborne International. We rely on you to spread the word. I am not going too far away in my new Headship role so my desire is to remain in contact and do some fun co-curricular activities together with Sherborne International in the future. Sherborne International is a nonselective school and we are extremely proud of our results in relation to cohort ability and last year was no exception. Already this year there are solid improvements across all age ranges and this is very pleasing. The students who improve the most are those that embrace the need to work hard, make a real effort to speak English rather than revert to their own language and are positive and enthusiastic. This applies to the vast majority of our students and they deserve congratulations on the way they have adapted to academic life at Sherborne International.

THE STUDENTS HOWEVER HAVE CHANGED IN NAME ONLY AND IT STILL AMAZES ME HOW WELL THEY SETTLE AS A COMMUNITY AND HOW WILLING THE MAJORITY ARE TO WORK HARD TO IMPROVE.

Where students have not progressed so well, this is because they have not been so keen to work hard and concentrate on learning and communicating in English. For some students this is extremely difficult but they must try their best. Students have been seen by me on an individual basis and we always agree targets for further improvement. Your son or daughter will have written down these targets so please ask them to show them to you – it is very important that they know we are all working together to provide the best future possible for your son or
daughter. May I take this opportunity to thank all the parents who have met with me in Sherborne, Moscow and Hong Kong. I value these meetings extremely highly and hope you have found them of great benefit also. In the New Year I will be visiting Bangkok and hopefully Shanghai and Beijing. I would love to see parents there too. For those who I do not have the honour to meet personally, please remember that I welcome phone calls, email and skype conversations. There is no question too insignificant, no worry too minor. Here at Sherborne Intentional we are totally committed to helping in any way we can. King’s House
Thirty-eight new students were welcomed to King’s House in September. This represents almost two-thirds of the boys living here, with more to come in January and April. Most of these new students are enrolled on our one year I/GCSE programme, which means that they have to ‘hit the ground running.’ In order to help them achieve this, the staff try to organise them as quickly as possible and settle them into a routine. This September they began with a full House induction, where the various timetables were introduced to them, followed by talks on Personal Safety, Drugs Awareness and E-Safety. In December, all the Fifth Form boys took part in the ‘Standing Tall’ seminar which aims to develop self-confidence. King’s House has offered excursions to Bournemouth, Bath, Exeter and Christmas shopping to Street, Saturday

night cinema trips to see ‘Everest’ and ‘The Martian’ and a full programme of activities, sports fixtures and InterHouse tournaments.
Orchestra and to Hale Ho for delighting us with his superb Bagpipe performances. They are all very talented musicians.
With so many new students, representing so many different nationalities, it is pleasing to note how well most of them seem to settle into their new surroundings and cultural environment. So far the King’s boys have been impressive in their work ethic and general enthusiasm. Their generous attitude towards each other within the boarding house has also been most encouraging. A good number of boys have volunteered to take part in the House Christmas Drama production of ‘0800 Santa’, at the end of this term.
A final thank you must go to all of the King’s House staff for taking a leading role in many of the extra-curricular activities on offer here.

This term has seen a number of changes to Westcott House, with new staff and new students
However, the ethos instilled has not changed and the staff have continued to nurture the students and make this a “home from home.� Westcott is a place where the girls are happy and feel safe, but where they are also encouraged to work hard and care for each other. The girls have been involved in a variety of activities and events since they returned to school in September.
The annual “Sunday Fun Day” took place at the beginning of term, when girls from both Westcott and Mowat Houses were placed into teams and competed in a range of activities, as a way of getting to know each other. The weather was glorious and the day was completed by a spectacular BBQ provided by our school catering team. On most Sundays our juniors participate in an organised activity such as making bunting or Christmas decorations, a visit to Sherborne Castle or a cake-baking session. Every girl’s birthday is also celebrated with homemade cake - a tradition which is becoming ever more popular.

Before the half term holiday the staff and girls enjoyed a celebratory House meal in the common room, sharing international food chosen by the girls, and playing
games. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to spend quality time together in a relaxed environment. With Christmas fast approaching, the girls in Westcott have enjoyed a packed final two weeks of term. They have generously collected Christmas presents to be sent to a children’s charity. They have held a Christmas dinner in the House followed by organised games and activities. The annual inter House Drama competition has occupied many girls with rehearsals and preparations, including the decorating of the common room and the giant Christmas tree. The girls have been studying hard throughout the term, and are now looking forward to a restful holiday after an enriching and fulfilling autumn term.
As has become tradition, the girls joined the others from Westcott House on the first weekend for an activities day in the gardens. The weather was perfect as all the girls completed various team building tasks and feasted on a tasty BBQ. From the beginning, the boarding house has been a lively environment with the various activities, music lessons and sports on offer. The girls have brought their enthusiasm to regular Dance2Music, Boxercise, Badminton and Futsal sessions, as well as forming the first ever Mowat House Gymkhana Team with the horse riding group on Friday afternoons. They have also represented the school on the debate team and as part of the Sherborne Schools Sinfonia and Joint Orchestra.

Cheapside House
With the autumn term now coming to an end, staff and students alike are preparing for the holidays. The Christmas tree is up and decorated and the festive play has once again entertained the whole School and the much looked forward to School Christmas Dinner has taken place.
Cheapside House has welcomed a new cohort of students who bring with them a variety of different hobbies and aspirations. The boys have settled well into boarding life, quickly establishing routines, making sure they make full use of their prep time. The boys have maintained a balanced healthy lifestyle, by joining extra-curricular clubs such as the choir, book club and the debating society. The House is quite diverse with students having interests in martial arts, music, basketball and football. When the boys returned for the second half of the term, they were greeted by Cheapside’s new addition, Bonnie, an 8 week old puppy. The boys have thoroughly enjoyed Bonnie’s company in the evenings and she has established quite a large fan club within Cheapside and the rest of the School. Cheapside House also held its first common room committee meeting with Eric, Jimmy and Ray all offering good ideas on how to improve the boarding experience.

The English Literature students travelled further afield with a trip to Stratford to see a Shakespeare play.

FILLED DAY AND IT WAS VERY PLEASING TO SEE ALL THE BOYS ENJOY THEMSELVES AND BEGIN TO BOND AS A GROUP.
The Grosvenor students have also enjoyed a number of other excursions during the term to the seaside town of Bournemouth, the ancient cathedral city of Exeter and here the junior students went down into the medieval underground passageways that stretch under the city's streets. We visited the historic city of Bath and the spectacular Roman Baths. The Grosvenor boys also took a trip to Weymouth seafront for a walk along the beach. There have been trips to the cinema to see films such as ‘Everest’ and ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 2’. Also as part of Guy Fawkes Night celebrations, the boys visited Sherborne Castle to watch a spectacular firework display and enjoy the festivities.
The boys have also taken part in a wide range of other sports and activities, including Swimming, Basketball, Indoor Cricket, Rounders, Volleyball and other team games aimed at improving hand eye coordination and team work. Grosvenor Boys have competed in Inter-House competitions such as the Basketball and Volleyball tournaments. Other activities with Inter-House points implications have also been held through the term such as the hotly contested Grosvenor House Table Tennis Tournament and a FIFA 16 PlayStation tournament. The boys have been involved in a mixture of activities’ sessions including Ten-Pin Bowling, Golf, Horse Riding, Football skills and Squash.
The school’s Christmas Drama Festival has become an important feature in the term’s calendar and undoubtedly it provides a memorable highlight shortly before the Christmas break. The Grosvenor boys showed enthusiasm for the preparations and rehearsals of their production which involved every boy in the House. This year the Grosvenor production was a story of ‘The Three Not-So-Wise Men’, which was an extremely entertaining and amusing performance. Also, as part of the yuletide celebrations, the Grosvenor boys joined the other students, along with staff and guests, for the spectacular Christmas Dinner that capped a busy and enjoyable term.

GIRLS’ SPO RT The girls started the term with basketball coaching, which gave them much ball handling practice, a skill useful for the game of netball which they played a few weeks later. Many girls had played basketball before to varying standards. This initial interest in basketball encouraged six of the girls in all age groups to attend the Sherborne Basketball Academy, organised by an outside club, where the girls are taught by professional coaches.
When netball coaching started, the Fourth Form team was given a boost as Senty and Sherry were in their second year at the School and Yelena had played the game in her previous school. They have used their knowledge of the game to help the other girls. Nicole was also able to pass on her netball experience to the Third Form team. Both teams have played against Sherborne Girls School, where they experienced the challenge of playing on a full sized court. The first netball team played against Sherborne Girls School and gained much from this fixture. Both Sherborne International senior teams travelled to Leweston School to play their international girls. The younger girls have also had swimming lessons every week when they have worked to improve their technique but also attempted some synchronised swimming. Their swimming lessons will lead on to the girls’ Swimming Gala when all age groups will be involved. The girls have already played inter house basketball and volleyball. The high number of girls participating in these events have worked with great enthusiasm supporting each other on and off the court.

’ s y Bo With a late flurry of summer sun, the students have once again been introduced to the autumn sports of Basketball, Football, Badminton and Table Tennis, training twice a week and playing fixtures against a number of local schools. The footballers have enjoyed the mild temperatures and high sun in the first half term, with all three age groups putting in much effort during their training sessions and matches. The Under 14s have so far played two games, winning one and losing one, with a combined 18 goals being scored in these two games. They are truly living up to their billing of being the most exciting team to watch. The 2nd XI have shown great progress in a relatively short time with some excellent team performances against very strong sides. Two of the 2nd XI players (Mineyuki and Young) have impressed so much that they are now starting for the 1st XI every week. The 1st XI have played some excellent football at times, winning their first game of the season, but have since been unlucky in a couple of 3-3 draws and a narrow defeat. All boys have trained extremely well though and no doubt there will be more success just around the corner.
t r o Sp The Basketball team has been training in earnest, with lessons twice a week as well as the Basketball Academy on Tuesday evenings. This year the school has been a part of the South West Schools Basketball League, playing fixtures against a number of local schools. So far the boys are sitting third in the table but there are still many fixtures on the calendar so the boys have plenty to play for next term. The Badminton and Table Tennis sports options have been popular, with the addition of three brand new table tennis tables. This has allowed for extra practice over the weekends and the boys have shown tremendous progress. As well as matches against other schools, Inter House Competitions have featured this term with
competitions in Basketball and Volleyball as well as a number of non-sporting events. Sportsmanship and teamwork has been shown in abundance. Our Juniors, third and fourth formers have been doing well in their sport lessons, with football training being supported by a variety of other sports and activities, such as Swimming, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Basketball, Dodgeball, Cricket and Fitness Training to name a few. The challenge of learning these new sports as well as learning the quirks and traditions of some of the traditional British sports has been enjoyable for the students. Great enthusiasm and potential have been shown by the students, and next term promises the results of their hard work in fixtures and Inter House competitions.

s e i m t r i o iv F h ct t f i F A Throughout the course of the academic year, Sherborne International offers the 5th Form students a number of activities, many of which are optional to coincide with their busy academic timetables. The activities are put in place so that the students can have time away from their boarding houses, and demanding routines, and get some much needed fresh air and exercise. Badminton and Table-Tennis are extremely popular with our students. A group of students from all nationalities regularly attend the sessions. They are always willing to help set up and put away the equipment. The ‘Basketball Club’ activity is an opportunity for the boys and girls to hone their skills, and practise in their own time. Here the students are encouraged to oversee the sessions themselves, in order to learn the rules and regulations, and take on more responsibility.
Boxercise is a circuit class including boxing style stations and techniques. The students have learnt over eight different punches and movement using focus pads. The workout uses the whole body and targets body movement, agility and momentum. The ‘Dance 2 Music’ activity has been very popular, with a strong core group of students attending every
week. ‘Dance 2 Music’ is an activity which involves using an aerobic fitness programme featuring movements inspired by various styles of Latin American dance and performed primarily to Latin American dance music Fitness Club is the most popular Optional Activity on the Activities Timetable when the boys and girls can attend the Fitness Suite, follow a planned programme and receive professional advice from the Sports Department. The horse riding sessions take place off campus at Pevlings Farm a few miles from Sherborne. The students are put into groups, depending on their ability and experience. This term some enthusiastic girls have attended all classes and shown a great attitude and willingness to listen and learn. Open Fitness sessions are where the students are allowed to carry out their workouts, following the guidance of their ‘Personal Exercise Programmes’, or the advice of sports’ staff . The fitness suite is always busy with a very physically fit, and health- conscious group of students. Swimming sessions are extremely popular with the boys and girls. The students enjoy the use of the swimming pool and floats, and follow advice from the trained staff regarding technique and skills. The Activities Timetable is a vital part of the School’s programme, as it promotes good health, fun and team spirit among the students.

Theatre Trip: ‘King Henry V’ In October, students in the Fifth Form Literature classes went on a trip to see ‘King Henry V’ at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. They are studying this famous history play by William Shakespeare for the IGCSE English Literature examination. Seeing it performed in Stratford-upon-Avon, the town in which Shakespeare was born, was an opportunity not to be missed. Shakespeare’s play is based on actual historical events and tells us about the war fought between England and France during King Henry V’s reign. We see the young king declaring war, invading France and fighting the Battle of Agincourt, which he wins despite having an army that is much smaller and in a poorer condition than the French one. The fact that it was the month of the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt (which was fought in October 1415) gave a special significance to the performance. In addition, the directing and acting were excellent, enabling our students to gain valuable insight into the complexities of King Henry V’s character and to enjoy the blend of serious and humorous moments that is so characteristic of Shakespeare’s plays. This will not only help them in their examination but also be a cultural highlight of their time at Sherborne International.
Another Modern Language on the School Programme The School has initiated a popular one year IGCSE course in Spanish. The class is learning to speak, listen, read and write in Spanish in order to take the IGCSE Examination next June. Students are tested on all four skill areas equally and tasks include writing a letter, an article, listening to interviews and talking about a photograph. They need to display a variety of tenses in the past, present and future in order to gain a good pass. Lessons consist of grammar, vocabulary, working on all four skill areas, listening to songs, watching films and discussing culture and life in Spain and Latin America. So far the class has briefly studied Picasso’s Guernika, The Spanish Civil War, watched the BBC’s interactive Mi Vida Loca and is planning to study the historical film, La Lengua de las Mariposas (Butterfly’s Tongue) by José Luis Cuerda, about a boy’s life at the outbreak of the civil war in 1936.
Charities Jeans for Genes Day
Sherborne International staff and students took part in the charity event, Jeans for Genes Day which took place on 18 September to raise money for this important medical research project. Thank you to everyone for helping to raise £178.98.
Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning
On 25 September, Sherborne International hosted its own coffee morning with cakes and other goodies provided by the staff of Sherborne International. There were an array of cakes from little cupcakes to a massive piece of lardy cake. It was a whole school effort with the teaching and boarding staff helping to set up the cake display. The students and staff all enjoyed the cakes and had many happy customers who came back for second and even third helpings. The School managed to raise a total of £150.64. A guest speaker from the Macmillan Cancer Fund also came to speak to the students about how the money is distributed and the positive effect it has on people’s lives.
Debating Competition On 26 November a dozen or so students took part in a formal debate at Leweston School near Sherborne. The motion was “This house believes that tablets should replace text books in schools”. The motion was denied.
Charlotte Smith, a teacher in the English Department and also Spanish teacher receives congratulations from the Chair of Governors, Major–General Patrick Cordingley, for obtaining her DELTA (Diploma for the Teaching of English to Speakers of Other languages).
The main speakers were Elene Papashvili, Yelena Pavlova, Danny Zhang, and Eric Wang The floor speakers were Daria Samsonova and Gary Xu. The speech writers were Caesar Li, Vanessa Lock, Jimmy Wong, Tifa Leong, and Lilian Lei. The staff from Sherborne School, Sherborne Girls’ and Leweston School all praised the maturity and eloquence of our speakers, who delivered their arguments with skill and persuasion.

SI Girls join the Sherborne Race for Life At the end of the summer term 2015, a group of students and staff from Sherborne International decided, at short notice, to take part in the Race for Life which exists in order to raise money for Cancer Research UK. This involves running, jogging or walking 5k round the beautiful grounds of Sherborne Castle. After a grey start, Sunday 22 June was a fine, dry day and
despite feeling slightly nervous before the race began, the Sherborne International girl runners thoroughly enjoyed both the exercise and the event. ENGLISH SPEAKING BOARD ASSESSMENT JUNE 2015 As the hard work of end of term examinations finished and just before the fun of Activities Week started, all Junior Group and Third Form students joined together for a special day of speaking activities on 17th June 2015. Their performances were individually assessed by external examiners. All students read aloud, delivered a presentation, answered questions and acted in role-play dialogues. The first two elements were prepared by students in advance, as they read from a book of their choice and then talked about a favourite topic; the latter two tasks were spontaneous, requiring quick responses in clear, natural English. These are not always easy things to do, especially when all your friends are listening! All students performed extremely well in their assessments, receiving either Distinction or Merit Plus awards. Congratulations to all concerned, particularly the many students from these groups who returned to us to study in September.

News from the Catering Department The students will be able to keep a better eye on the time, as a brand new clock proudly hangs on the wall of the dining room. The metal clock with Roman numerals cannot be missed as its dimensions are so large, 1.5 metres in diameter. We wish all our catering staff a very Merry Christmas and the students thank them for such delicious and locally sourced fresh food.
