Celebrating 60 years of Art at Milton Abbey

Milton Abbey is a small coeducational boarding and day school set in a stunning rural position in mid Dorset. Our size and reputation for excellent pastoral care mean that at our School the individual really does matter. Milton Abbey has a unique ability to deliver a bespoke education, making the most of each pupil’s individual skills and talents to enable them to achieve the best possible results inside and outside the classroom.

We are delighted to welcome so many of our parents, alumni and friends to this special event and our considerable thanks go to Johnny Messum and David Mounde for their leadership and enthusiasm in supporting our current and former pupils through this initiative. We are also extremely grateful to all our alumni who are exhibiting this evening for giving their support to the three causes we are assisting through this event.

Magnus Bashaarat Headmaster

The Milton Abbey Association (MAA) exists to maintain strong contact with and provide support for existing and future members (alumni and former staff) through an engaging programme of well organised and entertaining activities, including events and networking opportunities and a wide variety of sports clubs that appeal to the widest spectrum of MAA members. A key priority for the MAA is to assist all alumni and current pupils with career development and to work closely with Milton Abbey School to assist with its progress and development.

Many thanks for your time this evening. The Milton Abbey Association (MAA) would like to thank Johnny Messum for his exceptional kindness and vision for this evening. Earlier this year, Johnny helped the MAA with a careers workshop following which he saw some of the work of current pupils and suggested they may be interested in exhibiting in London. And so this evening was developed to celebrate the great creative work that has come from Milton Abbey pupils, both past and present. Funds raised from this evening will go towards the MAA Gap Year Grant, a new Gallery and development of the Art Centre at the School, and the Toby Mann fund. Further information on these projects can be found at the back of this brochure. David Mounde Milton Abbey Association

21. Travelling Light, 2006 Framed canvas print 85cm x 35cm £450 This photograph was taken shortly after dawn in early spring just before the leaves appeared so that winter tracery of the oak tree is still visible. It was a beautiful dawn and the colours have been enriched slightly. It was taken on a Hasselblad x-Pan, which is a 35mm panoramic film camera. This shot won the First Prize in the Tree and Shrub Category of The Royal Horticultural Society’s 2007 Photographic Competition. It is printed on a laminated canvas to give texture to the image and it is No 4 of an edition of 50.

22. Lonely Trees – Dark, 2006 Framed canvas print 85cm x 35cm £300 This is an early morning photograph taken on Lynchmere Common in West Sussex. Lynchmere Common is a nature reserve and heathland restoration project. The clearing of the birch from the commons has left a wall of delicate trees at the margin of the commons, and these are the backdrop for this photograph. The photo was taken on a Hasselblad x-Pan, which is a 35mm panoramic film camera. It is printed on a laminated canvas to give texture to the image and it is an Artist’s Proof.

23. Travelling Light, 2013 Photograph 122cm x 61cm £745 Travelling Light was taken from the descent from the Kirkstone Pass towards Ullswater in the Lake District. Gaps in the cloud-cover form spotlights that randomly pick out features of the landscape. The title is also a tongue-in-cheek reference to the weight of the equipment required to capture the delicate colours and textures (shot on a medium format digital camera). Shortlisted for this year’s RA Summer Exhibition. Presented as a digital print on acrylic, supported by a hidden frame (No 2 of edition of 16).

24. Moon Rise Over Heron Island, 2008 Photograph 105cm x 55cm (framed) £850 Photograph taken on Heron Island on the Barrier Reef in Australia. It was soon after sunset with a rising moon and rising tide. This is a tray framed digital print on acrylic, which gives a wonderful clarity and peacefulness to the image. This is a signed print, but not a limited edition because we don’t want to limit people’s opportunity to share this photograph with us!

This Evening’s Beneficiaries MAA Gap Year Grant

A new Gallery and Art Centre

In 2013, the Middle Abbey Association launched a programme to award two grants to Middle 6th pupils at Milton Abbey School who are taking a gap year and are planning to participate in a charitable project during the year. The grants are for £1,000 each and must be used within a calendar year of the grant having been awarded.

Creativity is the lifeblood of Milton Abbey and many pupils develop a passion for the arts whilst at school. The new Gallery and Art Centre will involve extending and refurbishing the present Art Department to provide new teaching space and a permanent gallery for pupil’s artwork; a new Pottery Studio and Kiln Room; a new photography studio and Dark Room and a new Sculpture Garden. The project will cost approx £340,000. We are delighted to announce that a challenge grant has been offered by the Garcia Family Foundation to help encourage others to support this important project. All funds raised (up to £67,000) will be matched £ for £.

Toby Mann Fund The Toby Mann Fund was set up in 2004 in memory of former pupil Toby Mann. Toby had a fatal accident whilst travelling during his gap year, prior to going on to study agriculture. Toby left Milton Abbey as Captain of Rugby, Head of House and with three good “A” levels thanks to the pastoral and academic help and encouragement he received at school. The Toby Mann Fund was therefore set up by the family to enable more boys and girls from a broader range of backgrounds to benefit from all that life at Milton Abbey can offer.
