2014 A LEVEL CELEBRATIONS

Happy Queen Anne's School A Level students

‘At Queen Anne’s we are celebrating a great year of A Level results and the girls have successfully secured places at top universities including Leeds, Birmingham, King’s College, Central St. Martins, Nottingham, Durham and Goldsmiths. They will be studying a diverse mix of subjects including English Literature, Medicine, Geology, Fashion, Business and Politics.’

Queen Anne’s School Head Girl, Nilofar Samadi, has secured a place at King’s College London to study medicine. Fellow pupil and GB gold medal winner in the European Cross Country Championships, Jessica Gibbon, has achieved an A* and two A grades in her A Level examinations and has secured a place at Bath University to study Economics.

18-year-old Nilofar Samadi from Uxbridge is celebrating 3 A grades in Biology, Chemistry and Russian A Levels, as well as a grade B in Latin. The Sixth Form student, born in Afghanistan, was a boarder at Queen Anne’s and has accepted a place at King’s College London to study Medicine and one day hopes to take her knowledge back to her homeland.

Head Girl duties, Nilofar undertook work experience in a hospital in Kabul and volunteered for the charity Afghan Action whose aim is to help free the people of Afghanistan from conflict, poverty and hunger. At the Queen Anne’s Speech Day and Prize Giving ceremony in June, Nilofar won four prizes including the Baroness Floella Benjamin Prize (a mentorship programme run personally by Baroness Benjamin).

‘I am very happy to be attending King’s College in September as a result of my A Level grades. Up until recently I wanted to study Politics and International Relations but I decided that medicine would be a much more immediately useful skill where I can make a difference. My mum and sister came with me today and they are over the moon! I’ve been nervous about my results since I finished my last exam but I can relax and enjoy the rest of the summer now.’

Jessica Gibbon, 17, from Henley-on-Thames, who was the youngest competitor and won a gold medal in the European Cross Country Championships this year, today received an A* and two A grades in Economics, French and Mathematics, securing her place at Bath University to study Economics.

‘I was incredibly nervous this morning but I’m ecstatic that I’ve achieved the grades that I needed to go on to study Economics at Bath University. I love the city of Bath and the fantastic sport facilities available at the university means that I will be able to continue with my running training. I’m sad to leave Queen Anne’s; however I’m looking forward to the future.’

Olivia Smailes, 18 from Whetstone, London received an A* grade in Geography and A grades for Chemistry and Physics and will study Geology at Leeds University.

Emmer Green musician, Harriette Wimble, aged 18, has been awarded 2 A grades and a B in Biology, Music and Music Technology and will now take up a place at Durham University to study Music. Harriette also achieved four Associated Board Grade 8s on the flute, piano, violin and viola.

‘I’m thrilled to receive my results, particularly after being in school since 7am! My main passion has always been music, having achieved Grade 8 in Flute, Violin, Viola and Piano and I’m delighted to accept my place to study Music at Durham University this September.’

Amelia Lenton, 18 from Henley-on-Thames, gained 2 A grades in English Literature and Psychology including a B grade in Geography and will study Psychology at Birmingham University Elizabeth Walsh, 18 from Caversham, will study English Literature at Goldsmiths after receiving 2 A grades in English Literature and Geography and a B grade in Biology.

Deputy Head Girl, Katrina Chorley, 18 from Burnham, Slough, was awarded 3 A grades in Economics, English Literature and Geography and has secured a place at Edinburgh University to study Business Management in September.

‘I’m thrilled to receive 3 A grades in order to secure my place to study Business Management at Edinburgh University. I’m looking forward to attending this prestigious university this September and can’t wait to celebrate my results with my family and friends tonight.’

Ellen Woodward, 18 from Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire, has achieved 2 A grades in English Literature and Geography and a B grade in Biology. She will go on to study Biology at Exeter University.

Toluwalope Alabi, 18 from Lagos in Nigeria, achieved an A* grade in English Literature, an A grade in Mathematics and 2 B grades in Chemistry and Physics and will study English Literature at Warwick University.

U18 National Eventing Horse Riding Captain, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Kopec, from Pangbourne, celebrates an A*, A and B grades in Geography, Biology and Chemistry.

18-year-old Lizzie is taking a GAP year to concentrate on her Show Jumping and will decide at the end of the year if she is to continue riding professionally or study Veterinary Science at University. Lizzie’s interest in horses and their well-being led to her work being celebrated at the Queen Anne’s Extended Project Award evening for her research paper on ‘Advances in Veterinary Medicine and Equine Care’. Lizzie said:

‘I’m so pleased to finally collect my results, even though part of me didn’t even want to see them! I’m looking forward to spending the next year focusing on gaining some valuable work experience and my horse riding with the aim of competing as part of the Under 21 Great Britain team. I hope to go on to study Veterinary Medicine at university.’

U18 National Eventing Horse Riding Captain Elizabeth Kopec

Katie McNamara, 18 from Pangbourne, is looking forward to studying Geography at Nottingham University after achieving the top A* grade in Geography and 2 B grades in Economics and English Literature.

Jemma Packham, 18 from Chalkhouse Green, has achieved an A* grade in English Literature and 2 B grades in Psychology and Spanish and will now go on to study Spanish at Nottingham University.

17-year-old Emily Green from Henley-on-Thames has received an unconditional offer to study at the University of Virginia, USA. At A Level Emily achieved an A grade in English Literature, two B grades in History and Physics and a C in Mathematics.

‘I was nervous this morning but I had already received an unconditional offer from my university and leave on Tuesday so the pressure wasn’t perhaps as much as it’s been for the others. I am very pleased with my results and plan to celebrate with my family this evening.’

Chemical Engineering student Annabelle Akintoye

Annabelle Akintoye, 17 from Purley-on-Thames, is off to study Chemical Engineering at Swansea in September. Annabelle received a B in Mathematics, and two Cs in Chemistry and Physics and is following in her father’s footsteps with her career choice:

‘I am very excited to be starting my Chemical Engineering degree next month. Although still quite a male dominated course and career path Queen Anne’s has prepared me well and I am confident I will change the game for the next generation of women looking at this industry.’

Anna Price, 18 from Henley-on-Thames, received an A grade in English Literature and 2 B grades in French and History.

Hok Yi Chan, 19 from Hong Kong, will be studying Biomedical Science at Newcastle University after achieving an A Grade in Psychology and 4 B grades in Biology, Chemistry, Chinese and Mathematics.

Nicola Osbourne, 18 from Reading, received an A grade in music, B in History and C in her Spanish A Level.

The breakdown of Queen Anne’s School’s A Level results is as follows:

Speaking about the A Level results, Mrs Julia Harrington, continues:

‘Alongside their academic results our Sixth Form students participate in a wide range of extra curricular activities in sport, music, drama and art while honing their academic skills through activities such as their independent extended research project. This requires students to develop diverse problem solving skills, creativity and inter-personal and leadership attributes - qualities that they will need at university and in the world of work.

I am proud of the A Level results the girls have achieved today and I wish them well as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.’
