LOOKING OUTWARDS In my address at the start of the year, I spoke of Sherborne Girls as a community of energy and possibility, throwing down the gauntlet for us to practise ‘looking outwards’, and it is this element that I hope will come across in our inaugural Arts Festival. For many, ‘looking outwards’ means developing resilience, courage, curiosity and being out of one’s comfort zone. In reality, this is considerably harder to sustain than one might think, but within the context of this programme is a wealth of opportunity: a programme of visual arts, literature and musical events, a celebration of creative talent, courage, discovery and innovation, led by the girls, by staff and by visiting arts experts in their field. We are enormously grateful to all the girls, staff and our inspirational visitors, for their commitment and tireless energy.
Set to be an action packed, exhilarating, colourful week, there is something for everyone, with all events providing inspiration, challenge and creative reflection. The week kicks off with ‘Unplugged’, an informal, student led acoustic evening in which our song writers, mime artists and dramatists get up on stage and look outwards… and then, keep calm and carry on! It is a privilege to welcome back former pupil Santa Montefiore for her lecture and extend a warm welcome to RSC veteran and former RADA professor Tim Hardy, our Photographer in Residence, Katy McDonnell, and Brazilian Carnival expert, Felix Gibbons. We hope you enjoy reading the Arts Festival 2014 programme, and that it provides you with greater insight into the rich and vibrant community that is Sherborne Girls.
