Sherborne Girls jazz band

After buying a farm in Devon - a life-long ambition - Wilfred now markets his own range of food including sausages and cheese under The Black Farmer® label. Flavours without Frontiers – the promise offered by his products goes some way to describing his pioneering personality. In 2005 he launched a rural scholarship scheme through which young people from inner city communities are given the opportunity to experience what it is really like to live and work in the rural community. We are delighted that Wilfred has given his time tonight to help us launch The Candlelight Bursary Fund.

Led by saxophone teacher, Edward Leaker, Sherborne Girls Jazz Band plays in school concerts, the Abbey Festival and occasionally further afield.

Sherborne School swing band Jazz is very strong at Sherborne. The Swing Band, essentially a 22 piece “big band” of the Ellington/Basie tradition, has an enviable reputation both locally and further afield.

Aa message from the Chairman message from the chairman of governors, stephen wingfield digby We believe it is important to help girls from a wide range of backgrounds to benefit from the enriching experience of a boarding school education. Through nurturing promise and supporting excellence we see bursaries as making a vital contribution to the life of the recipient and that of the School. Tonight we are launching The Candlelight Bursary Fund. This new scheme is to provide 100% bursaries to girls with the promise and character to thrive at Sherborne Girls, where challenging circumstances at home mean a boarding education would be life-changing for both girl and family. Key to this scheme’s success is careful selection of candidates and their yearround support, in holidays as well as in term time. To this end, we have, in the first instance, formed close associations with Kids Company and The SpringBoard Bursary Foundation.

4

Candlelight Bursaries will be cofunded by the School (through fundraising) and by the charities we are working with. By the School’s 125th anniversary year, in 2024, we aim to be in a position to provide up to 10 Candlelight Bursaries across the School at any one time - one to two girls a year. Tonight we hope to raise over £30,000 to support two girls next year. I hope that you will applaud and support this new scheme. Thank you for coming tonight and I wish you a very enjoyable evening. Stephen Wingfield Digby Chairman of Governors

Kids Company kids company Kids Company was founded by Sherborne Old Girl Camila Batmanghelidjh in 1996 to provide practical, emotional and educational support to vulnerable inner-city children. Kids Company services reach 36,000 and intensively support 18,000 children across London, including the most deprived and at risk whose parents are unable to care for them due to their own practical and emotional challenges. For many, the roles of adult and child are reversed and, despite profound love, both struggle to survive.

“Sherborne Girls was a fantastic educational environment for me both in terms of how much I learnt and how much trouble I gave them! I’m so pleased that inner-city girls from challenging home environments are being helped to use the treasures of Sherborne and be given a lifetransforming change. Thank you for your support.” Camila Batmanghelidjh CBE (DH’81) Founder, Kids Company

In 2007 Kids Company was awarded the Liberty and JUSTICE Human Rights Award, and in 2010 was selected as a ‘Child Poverty Champion’ by the End Child Poverty project for their success in enabling children to achieve their full potential.

TheTheSpringBoard BursaryFoundation springboard bursary foundation The Arnold Foundation for Rugby School has provided the framework and impetus for The SpringBoard Bursary Foundation. Its CEO is Ian Davenport, former Headmaster of Blundell’s and now a governor at Sherborne Girls. SpringBoard’s objective is to add a powerful, ambitious and innovative approach to the provision of fully funded bursary places at independent and state boarding schools for disadvantaged children. The intention is, over time, to have a profound effect on social mobility and the ethos of the boarding sector. Recently launched, SpringBoard will work with state schools and charities, including Sherborne Girls, with the aim of securing 2,000 boarding places for disadvantaged children within a decade.

6

“For many pupils boarding offers an enriching experience because they have the structure and the time to work closely with teachers who have committed themselves to the extra level of intensity which comes from working in a boarding school. For all boarding pupils it offers a strong and engaging pastoral environment, but the high fees for these types of schools means this opportunity is not available to the majority of the population.” Ian Davenport CEO, The Springboard bursary Foundation Governor of Sherborne Girls

Guest of honour guest of honour and speaker the lord coe ch, kbe We are honoured that double Olympic Champion and Chairman of the London Olympics Organising Committee Lord Coe CH, KBE has volunteered his time this evening to support our event. Sebastian Coe is Executive Chairman of CSM Sport and Entertainment and was recently elected Chairman of the British Olympic Association. He was Chairman of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, having previously been Chairman of the London 2012 bid company.

In 2002 he was made a Peer. He received a Knighthood in the 2006 New Year’s Honours List. Seb is global advisor to Nike and works with Chelsea Football Club. He is also Vice-President of the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) and Chairman of the Sports Honours Committee. He was made a member of the Order of the Companion of Honour in the 2013 New Year’s Honours List. We extend a very warm welcome to Lord Coe and our great appreciation and thanks for his presence tonight.

Seb set 12 world records during his athletic career and at the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980 he won Gold in the 1500m and Silver in the 800m, a feat which he repeated in Los Angeles in 1984. He retired from competitive athletics in 1990 and became a Conservative MP and Private Secretary to William Hague.

The Olympic Games the olympic games and sherborne girls

‘The prize is a fair one, and the hope great.’ Research into the origins of our School motto (above) and torch badge (now adopted by Sherborne Old Girls) has uncovered surprisingly close links with the Olympic Games. The excerpt below is from a Sherborne Girls publication dated circa 1910. This considers Socrates’ last moments after being poisoned by hemlock, for forcing Athenian citizens to examine their ‘unexamined lives’. Our motto is based on a saying by Socrates:

‘Then thought wanders back to other days. He sees again the great Olympic games, the thronged arena, the eager athlete, his body poised for the race, the longed-for prize, a simple crown of fading leaves. Yet how men strain every nerve to get that crown; what discipline, what training they undergo for the sake of it. For Socrates the race is over, the goal is in sight; but it has been worth the struggle. “We must leave nothing undone that we may obtain virtue and wisdom in this life; the prize is a noble one, the hope great”.’

The amaranthine wreath, or crown, was the prize given for the ‘Crown’ Games of Greece, of which there were four: Olympia; Delphi (Pythian games); Corinth (Isthmean Games) and the Nemean Games. Each venue had a different crown: Olympia – wild olive; Delphi – laurel (bay); Corinth had pine; and Nemean had wild celery. The wild olive leaf represented on our torch badge is for the crown of the Olympic Games! 8

The following is an extract from a letter by the School’s first Headmistress, Beatrice C Mulliner, in the Sherborne School for Girls Magazine, dated December 1920:

‘A matter of considerable interest to the whole School came up at the Business Meeting - and that is the question of a Badge. Shortly afterwards a brilliant idea emanated from Dun Holme, that the old Torch Race of the Greeks would give us just what we wanted and would form a most suitable link with our Motto. A picture was found of an old coin, showing the burning torch used in the races, with its curious shield, and a sprig of wild olive suggesting the victor’s wreath. The race was very popular in the days of Socrates. It was run at night by teams representing different palaestra or training schools. It seems to have had some ceremonial significance and was specially a race for the ephebi, or young manhood of Greece…The flaming torch, passing rapidly from the hand of one eager runner to the next, the light borne on through the darkness to the goal, speaks so strongly of co-operation, of the sinking of the individual in the grand aims of a Community, of the great Prize, and the fair Hope, the amaranthine wreath of which Socrates dreamed, - surely we could not have a badge with deeper significance for the School.’

Torchbearers We welcome tonight some of our Torchbearers, individuals who have kindly chosen to remember Sherborne Girls in their will and to ‘Pass on the Light’ through their gift of a legacy to the School - the prize of an education at Sherborne Girls to new generations, including those on Candlelight Bursaries. 9

These two limited, numbered etchings by Jenny Newman, Head of Art, are from studies done ‘in situ’ after Jenny was awarded a travel scholarship, the Goldsmith’s Travel Award. The inspirational trip transformed Jenny’s teaching and her own work. The etchings are offered as two separate items. Generously donated by Jenny Newman

nick andrew oil painting

Contemporary landscape painter Nick Andrew works as a painter and lecturer based in Wiltshire and Dorset and exhibits his work throughout the UK, mainland Europe and the USA. This oil on canvas is titled Staccare 2001 and is valued at around £4,000. Nick says of his painting, “In my work, I am referring to the quiet, intimate, secluded places within the

landscape, places that I can get to know well, where I can walk and draw often, observing changes from day to day and season to season. Generally this tends to be close to my studio in part of a watermill on the river Wylye in south Wiltshire.” Generously Donated anonymously www.nickandrew.co.uk/biography See terms and conditions

It has been a privilege to chair the Organising Committee – a team comprising parents of girls at Sherborne, staff and other volunteers who have worked unstintingly to bring together many different strands culminating in tonight’s gala event. We would be rather lonely tonight if you weren’t all here so thank you for coming. We all hope you have a very enjoyable evening and please dig deep for a truly worthwhile cause.
