MULITZ THEATER Ellicott City, Maryland

Written by Carole Graham Lehan Musical arrangements by Sammy Miller, Sam Crittendon, David Linard

I’ve been thinking about you for months. When Sammy Miller and the Congregation performed and held master classes last year, the GCS world was a little rocked. The Mulitz Theater bounced with energy and excitement. In discussing a return, Sammy said, “Let’s step it up. Let’s collaborate on something.” I was looking for a new project. Cue the unprecedented partnership with the question, “What story do we want to bring to GCS?” When Sammy performs in schools, he always includes a little jazz history because he’s passionate about young people learning the diverse roots of the form he loves. So, we knew we wanted to include that as well as some traditional New Orleans tunes. I’m always surprised at what can inspire when I’m working on a production, but this time was no surprise. When my mother was sick last year, I had the opportunity to spend lots of time with her. We came to talk about all sorts of things, and I learned more about her early life in Indiana. I heard of how her father went to the 1932 Chicago World’s Fair and returned with jazz records of Jelly Roll Morton and Fats Waller. The music became part of the soundtrack to her early life. Her house was always full of music, and her dad sang in the town’s churches. At the table, he would lead Mom and her two brothers in singing Sousa marches …as the instruments. I even learned that she hated her name, Mary, because kids would tease her that it “sounds so square,” as the old Cohan song says. “Square,” in the jazz world, is what you don’t want to be. So, Mom inspired the context for our new show. We set the story in 1933, the nadir of the Great Depression – a time when a new president made sweeping changes and people were uncertain about the future. It was also a time in which a “separate but equal” culture was beginning to pick up steam again providing an unsafe environment for some races and foreign cultures. “What story do we want to bring to GCS?” One about community and the power of music to help create it. Thanks for coming. CGL

Glenelg Country School is proud to be a part of The Cappies of Baltimore, one of 13 charter programs in the United States and Canada. The Baltimore program consists of 22 schools from Howard, Baltimore, Carroll and Anne Arundel counties. The Cappies, Critics and Awards Program, is a program by which high school theater and journalism students are trained as critics, attend shows at other schools and write reviews for them. When this season is complete almost 1000 reviews will be written about high school theatre in the Baltimore region. At the end of the year, the student critics vote for awards that are presented at a formal Cappies Gala. The Cappies of Baltimore Gala 2017 will be held at the Hippodrome Theatre of the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center in Baltimore on Sunday, May 21st 2017 from 5:30-8:30pm. If you are interested in purchasing a ticket for the Gala event, please contact Mrs. Lehan lehan@glenelg.org GCS CAPPIES OF BALTIMORE PARTICIPATION
