A M E S S AG E F R O M O U R B OA R D P R E S I D E N T & CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Dear Friends of the Park, As stewards of Glen Echo Park, we see it as a gift for all to share—a place where history comes alive through mesmerizing lights and art deco architecture, where laughter and music carry fill the air, and where the visual and performing arts spark the imagination. We are continually inspired when the Park is filled with children drawing, painting, performing, and creating with joy, and when adults come together for learning, movement, community, and self-expression. 2024 was another memorable year! We offered more than 900 creative classes and 26 art exhibitions, including collaborations with the Black Art Today Foundation and Healing Artist Collective, as well as a group show featuring three Muslim women artists. We also celebrated a milestone exhibition by ceramicist Jeff Kirk, marking his 50 years at Glen Echo Pottery, and hosted the 53rd annual Labor Day Art Show featuring the work of more than 430 artists. We presented world-class performances sharing traditions from many cultures, including Coyaba Dance Theater at Carousel Day and Project Locrea at Echo Arts Festival. Free weekly summer concerts showcased local artists like Clarence “The Blues Man” Turner, Claudia Gargiulo, Ruthie and the Wranglers, Vox Pop, and the U.S. Marine Band. Tribal Voices, the third event in our Diverse Voices series, honored the culture and history of Native Americans through dynamic performances, artisan crafts, and storytelling. We also co-presented social dances with culturally diverse partners including EducArte, Dancing by the Bayou, and DC Rawhides, an LGBTQIA+ dance organization. Our Social Dance FREE-for-ALL during Labor Day Weekend featured Cuban dance, Brazilian samba, and Irish dance. The Montgomery County premiere of Ain’t No Back To A Merry-Go-Round, Ilana Trachtman’s award-winning documentary about the Park’s civil rights history, was presented in partnership with Montgomery History, AFI Silver Theatre, and the County Commission on Remembrance and Reconciliation. Our transportation fund provided access to performances and programs for more than 1,200 children from Title I schools and nonprofit organizations. Listed on the National Register, our 103-year-old historic Dentzel carousel with its Wurlitzer band organ recorded more than 30,000 rides during the May–September season. These are just a few of the highlights from 2024. We thank our members, donors, and sponsors—all who keep Glen Echo Park thriving as one of the most unique arts and cultural centers in the Washington, DC region. Read on for more highlights!

The Partnership was proud to celebrate Black History Month with programming highlighting the work of Black artists within the local community. In our Park View Gallery, Stitch by Stitch, featured a collection of colorful collages of acrylic-painted canvas scraps and ceramic work “created by Black and Brown boys from Washington DC’s Wards 7 and 8"—specifically, program participants of the DC-based youth arts program Life Pieces To Masterpieces (LPTM). The Photoworks Gallery presented Building a Mixed Race Community, featuring photographs by acclaimed photojournalist Marvin Tupper Jones that documented his home of Hertford County, North Carolina, from the antebellum era through the Civil War, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and the modern Civil Rights era. The Washington Conservatory of Music’s Casual Concerts series featured accomplished Black violinist and Conservatory faculty member Cleveland Chandler performing works by often-overlooked Black composer William Grant Still.
WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH During Women’s History Month, the Partnership Galleries presented three exhibitions by women artists. God is Beautiful & Loves Beauty: Three Muslim Women Artists of the DMV, a group exhibition on view in the Popcorn Gallery, featured the work of Alison Kysia, Negar Nahidian, and Dr. Diana Baird N’Diaye, co-curated by Alison Kysia and Laura Roulet. They used their work to counteract negative stereotypes of Muslims in Western media, instead expressing the love, joy, and beauty inherent in Islamic traditions. In the Stone Tower Gallery, artist Angela Malchionno presented Joystick, a solo exhibition capturing the exhilaration of artistic expression and paying tribute to all things derelict and obscure: analog machines, thrift store quilts, linoleum rugs. The Art of Attachment: Screenprints by Clare Winslow, a solo exhibition in the Park View Gallery, consisted of abstract screenprints on heavyweight printmaking paper, or Yupo (polypropylene), influenced by the Buddhist idea of “attachment.” In conjunction with the exhibitions, the Partnership Galleries hosted two artist-led workshops. Clare Winslow led a screenprinting demo, and Angela Malchionno led an Indigo Tie Dyeing workshop. The Partnership Galleries also presented an online Artist Talk with Alison Kysia, Negar Nahidian, & Dr. Diana Baird N’Diaye, moderated by co-curator Laura Roulet. The Art of Attachment was reviewed in The Washington Post's “In the Galleries” by Mark Jenkins.

A I N ‘ T N O B AC K T O A M E R R Y - G O - R O U N D MONTGOMERY COUNTY PREMIERE On September 15, 2024, the Partnership copresented the Montgomery County premiere of AIN’T NO BACK TO A MERRY-GO-ROUND, an awardwinning documentary by director Ilana Trachtman that tells the story of the civil rights history of Glen Echo Amusement Park. The film offers a rare intimate lens on the summer of 1960, when brave protestors brought about the end of segregation at the privately-owned Glen Echo Amusement Park. Centered on one amusement park, one group of individuals, and one moment in time, the story’s focused lens reveals the often-unseen people whose efforts, sacrifices, and personal awakenings fueled the Civil Rights Movement. Hosted by AFI Silver Theatre, the premiere included a Q&A session with Emmy Award-winning Trachtman, moderated by Jason Green. Tina Clarke, Edith Bryant Shorts, and Esther Delaplaine—original 1960 protesters—were in attendance. The event was possible thanks to the support of the Montgomery County Commission on Remembrance and Reconciliation and the Office of Human Rights, and co-presenters Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture, Montgomery History, and AFI Silver.

This year in particular, dancers visiting the Park were able to experience dance styles that were “not only new and exciting, but perfect for furthering our goal of increasing cultural diversity.” — Emily Crews, Dance & Events Program Director
The Partnership’s Cuban Dance Socials kicked off in January in the Ballroom Back Room. Co-presented with nonprofit DC Casineros Dance Company, attendees had the opportunity to learn popular Cuban dances rooted in Afro-Cuban, Afrocaribean, and French/English contra dances. Co-presented with EducArte, the Partnership began a monthly Sarau de Samba, a Brazilian social dance and music party featuring a dynamic ensemble of musicians and dancers, showcasing the diverse rhythms of samba. More than just a performance, these events invited attendees to become part of the music, with opportunities to dance, sing, and even play instruments alongside the professionals. In June, Raediant Movement brought There is Something about the Music, a Caribbean-style dance party, to the Ballroom Back Room. The dance company’s mission is “to highlight and teach similarities that connect Black dance across the diaspora.” Monthly Bumper Car Squares welcomed top-notch callers and musicians to the Park for special square dances in the Bumper Car Pavilion.

The theme for the Park Partnership’s 2024 event season was celebrating and fostering well-being through the arts, and in support of this wellness theme, we piloted a new DanceFit For Body & Mind class, a drop-in program providing an easy and accessible dance fitness option. The program began in the Spring with four styles: Shake Your Soul, JourneyDance, Line Dance, and RetroFit. THE YEAR IN REVIEW D I V E R S E VO I C E S : T R I B A L VO I C E S Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture and National Park Service’s George Washington Memorial Parkway presented Tribal Voices: A Native American Heritage Celebration on November 3, 2024, an event honoring the culture and history of Native Americans. The event featured a performance by Piscataway Nation Singers & Dancers, who presented a colorful, educational, and entertaining “pow wow-style event featuring American Indian Dance, Drum & Song,”; a solo performance of Blues, Jazz and Soul music by Carly Harvey, an Eastern Band Tsalagi and Tuscarora descendant and the originator of "Native Scat," an improvisational fusion of a traditional Jazz scat with Native vocables; a presentation by Native America’s Protectors, who performed and shared the origin/history of various dance styles; Native American artisan vendors; and a food vendor specializing in Native American cuisine.
“We are thrilled to work with one of our major partners, the National Park Service, to present a showcase that celebrates and honors Native American culture—both its history and its influence on today’s culture.” — Katey Boerner, Partnership CEO
E C H O A R T S F E S T I VA L In 2024 we presented our 3rd annual Echo Arts Festival, a celebration of visual and performing arts at the Park. This year, the Partnership featured Project Locrea (from LO-ve and CRE-ativity), a global jazzfusion ensemble that creates and performs original compositions and contemporary arrangements inspired by the folk music of different countries. Video artist Sue Slagle (stage name SUE-C) incorporated visitors’ creations in a live video projections project. Festival attendees also contributed to a collaborative, mixedmedia community arts quilt reflecting each participant’s perception of what it means to be loving and joyful. And several participatory line dancing workshops were offered, giving visitors the opportunity to connect with others through dance. The day-long event was a huge success! Local media coverage helped to bring in 1,500+ visitors. Attendees enjoyed live music, dance, art demonstrations, hands-on art projects, and food trucks. Resident artist studios and galleries had strong visitation and sales. And it was the last day of the carousel season, so hundreds of families took advantage of their final opportunity to ride our beloved Dentzel Carousel in 2024. “…a clever and innovative production…exceptional puppet artistry, an awe-inspiring array of styles, and beautiful and colorful design throughout…kids from one to 92 should not miss.”
Adventure Theatre MTC’s production of She Persisted, highlighted inspirational women across U.S. history. Based on a book by Chelsea Clinton, the musical adventure traveled through time to meet activists athletes, artists and more, including female trailblazers such as Harriet Tubman, Virginia Apgar, Ruby Bridges, Sally Ride, and Florence Griffith Joyner. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor was a central character in the musical, played by actress Victoria Gomez. Every first Friday from May through August, visitors had the opportunity to stroll through the Park to view artwork in the Partnership Galleries and Resident Artists' studios, and to learn from artist demonstrations and hands-on art activities. Partnership Galleries presented an exciting schedule of exhibitions in the Popcorn Gallery, Stone Tower Gallery, and Park View Gallery in 2024, including two exhibitions in celebration of Resident Arts Organization Glen Echo Pottery’s 50th Anniversary. 50 Years in Clay 1974-2024, in the Popcorn Gallery, featured ceramic pieces by Glen Echo Pottery students and staff. Glen Echo Pottery founder and Artistic Director Jeff Kirk presented Still Kicking After All These Years 1974-2024 a solo exhibition of ceramic works in the Stone Tower Gallery. “It seems that I have two lives” said Kirk in his artist statement. “First and foremost, I am a teacher; second, a ceramic artist. Most of my motivation comes from my teaching and our pottery community. Seeing students experiment with incorporating their passions, traditions, imagination, and unique vision in their own journey with clay continually inspires me as an artist in my life-long work with the medium.” In line with the Partnership Galleries mission to showcase the work of diverse artists from the greater Washington, D.C. area, notable exhibitions included: The Black Art Today Foundation, WOVEN: Threads of Identity in Abstract Expressionism, an exhibition showcasing the dynamic and powerful works of contemporary Black women artists who utilize the language of Abstract Expressionism. THE YEAR IN REVIEW M A G I C S TA I R C A S E Two years in the making, interdisciplinary artist Lauri Hafvenstein finalized her site-specific installation in the staircase of the Park’s Art Deco Arcade Building in June 2024, when she installed the last of more than 1,250 pieces cut from colored and dichroic polyester film. Each piece, some less than a quarter inch in diameter, was individually adhered by hand to the interior side of the window, a process that took 42 days to complete. The result is magical! The images continually shift color as the sun’s angle and viewer’s position changes due to the refractive properties of the dichroic film, a specialized material that splits light into different wavelengths (colors). At certain times of the day, particularly late afternoon, colored patterns are projected onto the surrounding walls. Although the design is partially visible both inside the building and from the exterior during the day, its full scope is best appreciated when illuminated at night. Each of the designs in the window was inspired by architectural details and visual elements found throughout the park. A simple Treasure Hunt Game for kids was created to help young art enthusiasts engage with the work, along with a more challenging version for adult & teen visitors that provides clues to all 19 different design elements
