his week’s Whitehouse is an edition like no other - this edition has been taken over by the Upper School students. Spearheaded by Marla in Year Three, the girls in the Upper School have worked tirelessly to create content they wanted to see published to the wider Glendower community.

An enormous thank you must also go to Mrs Sweeney for organising this ‘takeover’, and to the class teachers for implementing so many of the content ideas into their lesson and form times.

Mrs Cadenhead is Having a Baby!

1. What will be the first book you will read to your child?

That is a hard question – there are so many beautiful books to choose from! As a child, I loved The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr so that will be on the bookshelf. I loved hearing tales from Beatrix Potter too. My parents would read these to us and make up new characters, so I will be sure to do that too!

2. What will you miss most about Glendower on your maternity leave?

I will miss all the staff and the buzz of the school – every day is different and full of fun. Most of all, I will miss the girls of course! I will be sure to have regular updates from the teachers on how you are all doing.

3. Is there a day-out you would like to take your child on?

I think going to London Zoo for the first time will be exciting. I love visiting the Natural History Museum too so that will be a fantastic day out.

4. What are you most excited about having a child?

I am looking forward to watching them grow up and explore the world around them. Christmas will be good fun too!

5. Are there any names you thought about naming your child, but you’ve decided against?

We haven’t thought of many names just yet – it seems to be tricky thinking of a boy’s name. All suggestions are welcome. 5C have been good at giving me some interesting options!

Covid Update So far, 24 million people have been vaccinated by one of the three approved vaccines: Pfizer-BioNTech, Oxford and AstraZeneca. A vaccine has to go through lots of testing before it can be approved.

A vaccine gives the patient a small version of the virus so their body can train to fight the real thing if they get it. People over 50 will be receiving the virus in the first phase and the age will slowly be lowered. NHS staff and keyworkers will be given priority.

Mrs Hayes of Glendower Preparatory School had her vaccination at St Charles Hospital this month. She was very impressed with the efficiency and speed at which people were processed. She added, “The nurse was very good at distracting your attention by asking you questions so that you hadn’t even noticed that the vaccination had already been given!”

The numbers are going down quickly and soon more restrictions can be lifted!

Dogs Learn to Herd Penguins!

Middle Island is an outcrop on the coast of Victoria, and the world’s smallest penguins live there! The little penguins are just 33cm tall (13 inches,) have earned the nickname ‘Fairy Penguins’ and weigh only around 1kg. While the small birds spend most of their lives at sea, they do come ashore in the breeding seasons. However, between the island and the mainland, there are foxes who are capable of crossing the few hundred metres at low tide! The foxes caused the population of the helpless birds to drop massively – in 2005, what was once a colony was now just less than 10.

Then came Oddball, the sheepdog of a farmer on the mainland who chased away and protected the farm’s chickens who were also being ambushed by the foxes.

The farmer, Allan Marsh, told the ABC last year, “I used to spend my nights up with a rifle shooting foxes. One night I noticed the

neighbour’s dog barking and the light went on in my head. I realised he was barking at the same thing I was trying to shoot.”

Oddball soon became really good at keeping the foxes away, and so got moved to Middle Island in 2006 when the penguins were almost extinct. Wild officials thought that his “protecting chickens” skill would work on the penguins! Since then, more Maremma (Oddball’s breed of dog) have also been to Middle Island to stop the foxes.

Foxes have completely stopped coming and the penguin number have been increasing with roughly 180 birds in the last count! Even a multi-million dollar movie was made about Oddball’s amazing story!

The History of Queen’s Gate

ocated in the centre of the Royal London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Queen’s Gate was built on land purchased by the Royal Commissioners for The Great Exhibition of 1851, under an agreement in August 1855 with Henry Browne Alexander, whose family owned the land through which the road was being built, and William Jackson, a building speculator. The road was originally known as Albert’s Road but was officially changed to Queen’s Gate in 1859.

Architecture The road is a boulevard and is around 1 km in length. The northern area has terraced homes on the west side and attached buildings on the east side.

Famous Landmarks At the northern end of the road, near the gate to Kensington Gardens, is an equestrian statue of Lord Napier. There is also Royal Albert Hall, Imperial College, St. Augustine’s and the Natural History Museum. On the west side is Baden Powell House.

Five countries have embassies or high commissions in Queen’s Gate, including the Embassy of

Iraq which I s at number 21. The Security Service (MI5) was based at 73-75 Queen’s Gate from 1919 to 1929.

Famous Residents Benny Hill (who is a famous comedian and actor) lived at Queen’s Gate from 1960 to 1986.198 Dennis Gabor (who is a physicist, earned 1971 Nobel Prize in Physics and inventor of Holographs) lived in 79 Queen’s Gate from 1949 until the early 1960s.

Glendower The school was founded in 1895 by two Victorian ladies, Miss Edith Lloyd and Miss Maud Cornwell, with only three pupils. To begin with, the School used two rented rooms over a furniture shop in Fulham Road, sharing homes with the hatters Dunn & Co. and The Sports Motor Car Co. In 1904 the school moved to 5-7 Glendower Place and changed its name to Glendower School. After 16 years there, the School moved to 25-27 Cromwell Road.

In 1947 Glendower moved into 87 Queen’s Gate where it has stayed.

An Interview with Miss Lambert

iss Lambert is our amazing school secretary and marketing lead, running our school’s social media and publications. We got the chance to (virtually) ask her some questions.

What is your favourite things about working at Glendower?

My favourite thing about working at Glendower, apart from the staff and students, has to be the fact no day is the same. I’m very glad I work in a school where there is so much going on every week!

What comforts you?

When possible, I love getting into bed early and reading a book; it always makes me feel better after a busy day. I love reading thrillers and crime fiction, so whilst they’re not always relaxing, I find myself completely engrossed.

Has the lockdown impacked you?

The way main way lockdown has affected me is not being able to see my family. I am really close to my sister and I would usually see her most weekends, so it’s been a big adjustment only seeing her on screen and not in person. However, working in a school means there are always so many happy, smiling faces around to make things cheerier.

Who has helped you through lockdown?

I got my dog, Teddy, just before Covid hit, and he has 100% made the past year so much more enjoyable for me. He loves to cuddle, especially in the evenings when he wiggles his way in-between both of us on the sofa and takes up most of the space! He is always so pleased to see us and has given us a reason to get outside on lots of walks and escape computer screens.

What are your goals?

I have been renovating my house for just over a year, so a big goal is to finally have that completed! However, a shorter term goal would be to implement art more into my day-to-day life. I studied Art at University and would like to find a way to bring back some of those skills I learnt as I fear they have got very rusty!

What is your happiest memory of Glendower?

There are so many happy memories from my time at Glendower so far, but I think Sports Day and Upper School plays at Baden Powell stick out the most. Sports Day is great as it’s a day away from the school building, spent outside and seeing the girls in a different light than in the classroom. I loved helping with the plays at Baden Powell, especially making props and attending rehearsals; I have lots of memories of the current Year Six girls performing Sleeping Beauty in Year Four including trying to attach Maleficent horns to Chloe’s head!

Could Robots Ever Replace Teachers?

Do you want to be taught by teachers who are made out of metal and can’t think for themselves? Maybe this would be your dream come true and would love working with these mechanical beings as your teachers. By the end of this article hopefully you would have decided if you think that future generations should be taught by robots. So what are your thoughts on the matter?

here are two sides to this argument and I will start off with the ‘against’ . Teachers are preparing children for the challenges ahead; meanwhile robots run by algorithms and will never understand a child well enough and might not know all the questions to answer a curious child for it might not be on its algorithm. Although robots can teach students skills, it can’t teach about the human experience. Students need emotional support along with academic support from the teacher which only a human teacher can provide. Technology can help the process of learning, but it certainly cannot replace the role of the teacher.

A teacher also acts as a guide, a mentor and an inspiration for students, a role that cannot be replaced by technology of any kind.

On the other hand , Robots could soon replace teachers. Robot teachers never get ill, don’t forget much of what they are taught and operate 24/7 .Robot teachers will be able to quickly resolve the issues on the spot can provide a strong database and more knowledge. The teaching process will be strait to the point and there will be no wastage of time in irrelevant topics. In addition, artificial intelligence means that robots could quickly learn more about the children they teach and adapt their algorithms appropriately.

In conclusion, teachers being replaced by robots is a definite possibility in the future, but is would not be a pleasant experience for students. Children need to connect with their teachers on a social level as well as an academic one; robots may have more knowledge but will not improve children’s mental health. If this decision is

made, then that means that children will be less interactive with their parents and will stop talking about how they feel which could cause issues with mental health.

However, there is a good chance that children will be much brighter than they are now and could make big discoveries when they are older. On the other hand, it might be harder for students to learn because robots won’t single children out so if one person is struggling, then they will not get the attention that they might require. This argument is one that will no doubt continue in the future.

Food Glorious Food!

A

t the start of 2021, Miss Slater asked us to set ourselves some goals for the New Year. One of my goals was to reduce my food waste, because I had noticed that so much good food gets wasted and thrown in the bin. Have you also noticed this in restaurants or in your own home?

Bread hits the top of the list for the highest food waste in the UK. Can you believe that we chuck away over 240 million slices each year? In my house there is some food that I never worry about going to waste; when mum bakes cakes they always get demolished by Dad and me! Maybe I should ask Mum to make a lot more bread and butter pudding!

When I listen to or read the news I’m often confused by the stories about surplus food and its negative impact on the environment and the problem of food poverty in London. Food poverty is when people don’t have enough money to buy food or struggle to get food because it is not accessible for them. All the food that gets throw

away is not harmless it ends up in landfill and breaks down to produce greenhouse gases that impact the environment and climate change.

So I set myself the job of trying to find out more about these two important social issues that seem to me to be intertwined.

A few facts from my research that I find mind-boggling: • London is in the top ten of the richest cities in the world.

• Kensington and Chelsea is one of the wealthiest Boroughs in London.

• Nearly 2 million people in London struggle to find enough food to eat every day including 400,000 children.

• UK households waste about 4.5m tonnes of food a year, worth £14bn, that could have been eaten.

• The food industry in the UK generates almost 2 tonnes of good edible surplus food each year.

I kept asking myself (and mum), if we have so much surplus food, why is food poverty such a big issue in London and how can we use surplus food to help eradicate food poverty and support the environment?

A skip and hop from my house is St. Cuthbert’s Centre, a 30-year-old charity doing amazing work to tackle these issues. Their visitors are often marginalised due to homelessness, mental health issues or just because they are elderly or feel lonely and isolated. The centre provides a warm and caring environment for people who are vulnerable in our community.

I wanted some help with the questions that kept going around and around in my head, so I arranged a virtual conversation with Ali Kingsley, the CEO of St. Cuthbert’s Centre.

Q. What is the job of the Chief Executive Officer at St. Cuthbert’s Centre?

Ali: I am in charge of all the Centre’s activities which involve overseeing the cooking of the food, helping people with mental health issues, managing staff and delivering all the services that we provide. It’s a very busy job!

Q. How much food do you get delivered each day at the Centre?

Ali: Every day we get about 40kg of food delivered; this includes meat, fish, vegetables, cereals, fruit, dairy and chocolate. All of this food is surplus but in date and would otherwise end up as waste in landfill. Each day we prepare a three-course lunch, including a veggie option, for around 150 guests who are often the most vulnerable in our community.

They join us for a sit-down lunch “restaurant style” at a long table in a warm and friendly setting.

Since COVID-19 we have changed the way that we support our guests as they are unable, due to restrictions, to come into the centre. We still serve a three-course meal but as a takeaway service. At the height of lockdown last year, we were serving over 800 meals a day, not only to our guests but also to others, including NHS staff and AGEUK. Q. Where does all the food come from?

Ali: We work in partnership with an independent charity called The Flexi Project and their job is to collect surplus food from supermarkets and restaurants that they would not use and

cannot be sold. They bring it to us daily so we can make healthy meals with it. We get regular deliveries from Tesco, Sainsbury and Waitrose and many local restaurants.

Q. London is one of the richest cities in the world.

Why do you think there is so much food poverty in the city?

Ali: That is a very big and important question.

London is very expensive, so one problem is that it costs a lot of money to have a house and to travel around the city. People have lots of different things that they have to spend their money on, and food is expensive, so sometimes people don’t earn enough money so they can’t afford to buy food. Some people may have just arrived in the country and they are not allowed to work and so have very little money to live on. Some people are unemployed and this impacts the amount of money they have to spend. A combination of numerous factors can make life in London harsh and extremely difficult for many people.

Q. What food is most wasted and why?

Ali: An awful lot of milk gets thrown away because it has quite a short shelf life and people don’t value it anymore, so they order far too much and then throw it away because they have not been able to use it in time. Around 5.9 million glasses of milk are poured down the sink every year!

Q. Could you share any tips of what we could all do to help reduce food waste?

Ali: We definitely want to reduce food waste and something that everybody can do is always look at the two dates you find on food: there is a “best before” date and a “use by” date. Most food can still be eaten after the best before date. Also get used to touching and smelling food and how it looks rather just relying on dates. The other thing that people can do is don’t buy more food than you actually need, and if you do buy more than you need, rather than throw it away put it in the freezer. Almost every kind of food can be frozen.

If you make supper and you can’t eat it all you could make something different out of it the next day ¬– be creative! These are things that we can all to do reduce food waste.

I really enjoyed my conversation with Ali and learning about the brilliant work of St. Cuthbert’s Centre and how they address the issue of food surplus and food poverty. What an amazing way to use surplus food and help vulnerable people who live in our local community! There are many simple things that we can all do to play our part in reducing waste, protecting the environment and supporting our local community.

Glendower - Then and Now By 4R

4R practised their journalism skills this week. They thought of questions they would want to ask an exGlendower pupil. They then interviewed, Mrs Lyon Carroll, an ex-Glendower pupil, to find out what life was like when she went to school here. Mrs Lyon Carroll is the parent of Sapphire in 3L and Kintyre in 1KF. Mrs Lyon Carroll zoomed into 4R’s history lesson to be interviewed by the girls.

In Glendower, did you learn a language that your daughter doesn’t?

I had to learn Latin, which I think you may also do in Year Six. What was your favourite subject at Glendower and why?

My favourite subject was science because I enjoyed using the Bunsen Burner and I liked the teacher, Dr. Hern. The science lab is the same and it had a similar desk arrangement.

How long was your school day?

The school day ended at 15:30 and we only had one class per year group.

How different was the school uniform?

Interestingly, the uniform was exactly the same as yours is now. The purse belt was from Reception to Year Six. Did you have a blackboard or a whiteboard?

The teachers wrote on blackboards.

Did you have ICT lessons? Are there any subjects you did that we don’t do now?

We did have ICT, yes. The screens were quite small - they looked like cubes and ICT was in a tiny room. We did all the same subjects as you do now.

Did you go off-site for sporting? If so, where did you go?

We did netball and swimming at Imperial College. Barn Elms for sports day, like we do now, and we did gymnastics in the hall behind the church where we have the Carol Services now.

Did you do any different sports to what your daughter now does at Glendower?

We did tennis and athletics in summer. Instead of cricket which is done now.

Who was your favourite teacher? Are there any teachers still here from when you were a child?

Mrs. Richardson was my favourite teacher and she was the sports teacher. No teachers are at Glendower now who were there when I was a pupil.

What were the school lunches like? What was your favourite lunch?

The school lunches were all vegetarian when I was there. Students ate in their classrooms and food would be carried up to the class by porters. We used to bring a juice from home and we would often swap. The food was hot and my favourite food was the vegetarian sausages!

Anything else to add?

There was a kindergarten class for 3-4 year olds which took place in what is now the library.

4R learnt a lot about the history of Glendower and what it was like to be a pupil then. 4R would like to thank Mrs Lyon Carroll for her time, and giving us a fascinating insight into the life of an ex Glendower girl.

Dear Year Threee m longing to do a handstand but I just don’t have the courage! Do you have any advice?

I understand you find it very annoying that everyone else in the household can do a handstand.

To accomplish a handstand, we recommend you start with doing a headstand and a scorpion confidently without the wall. When you’re confident with that, start by doing bunny hops and your least favourite chick walk (or duck walks.) Then start doing donkey kicks (make sure your heel touches the wall every time). Then you should be ready to do a handstand.
