Prize Day 2021

Sir John Royden S

ir John Royden contacted Glendower early this year to inform us of his charity swim across Lake Geneva in memory of his late sister, Emma Royden. As an ex-Glendower Head Girl, with a Lower School trophy named after her, we thought Prize Day a fitting occasion to celebrate her life and share John’s story...

I am the elder brother of Emma Royden who was at Glendower in the late 1970’s who rose to the dizzy heights of Head Girl. Sadly, Emma died of an incurable brain tumour aged just 32 and so I have decided to use my forthcoming swim of Lake Geneva to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity. So, I have three things to mention. Lets start with Emma. Emma could easily be described as an angel. She was full of love and kindness for everybody and, in turn, she was loved and adored by everybody - the high and mighty and the low and the poor. Nobody ever had a bad work to say about her. There was very limited treatment available to her at the time and, quite frankly, little has changed in 17 years. She did have a brain operation but that just added three rather poor quality months to her life. The Brain Tumour Charity is the world’s leading brain tumour charity and largest dedicated funder of research into brain tumours. They are determined to reach the point where where brain tumours are defeated. Goal One – to double survival rates. Goal Two – to halve the harm that brain tumours have on quality of life. Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and people under 40, but less than 3% of the £600 million national cancer spend goes to this disease. Considering that 31 people in the UK are diagnosed with a brain tumour every day and survival rates have barely improved in 40 years compared to other cancers, things have to change. Diagnosis takes too long. Research is expensive and surgery is difficult. Lastly; Lake Geneva. I last did a big swim in 1993 and that was the Channel. England to France in 13 hours and 45 minutes. Lake Geneva is close to two-and-a-bit Channels at 43 miles. It’s fresh water which is nicer to swim in than sea water and it will take me 36 hours of non-stop swimming. And that will make me the eighth person to swim it. More people have walked on the moon. Twelve to be precise.

Prior to joining JM Finn in January 2011, John was a merchant adventurer which took him to Sweden, Dubai, Indonesia and India where he was involved with derivatives broking, property and estate agencies as well as general corporate finance related consulting. John specialised in shareholder activism for a number of years and at one stage owned a company that did specialist sound, flash and exhaust fume moderation for sniper rifles. John is a keen sailor, and still stalks, shoots or fishes most weekends. He enjoys backgammon, bridge and the fine gastronomic delights of Boodles. Prize Day 2021

Helen Richardson-Walsh Olympic Gold medallist, GB and England Hockey.

M

idfield maestro, Helen, is one of the most experienced members of the GB women’s team. Having started her international career in 1999 at the age of 17, she became the youngest ever woman to represent GB hockey at an Olympics in Sydney the following year, and has gone on to compete at four Olympic Games. As part of the senior leadership group she played a central role in propelling the women’s game to victory on the world stage in Rio 2016. As she stepped on to the podium alongside her team mate and wife, GB captain Kate Richardson-Walsh, they also entered Olympic history as the first same sex married couple to win an Olympic medal playing for the same team. Over the course of her 17 year international career, Helen has amassed 19 medals including an Olympic bronze at London 2012, the European Championship title in 2015, World Cup bronze and Commonwealth silver, before finally reaching the pinnacle of her sport as part of the celebrated GB hockey team that beat the Netherlands in Rio to win her gold medal. Helen was one of only two players to score during a tense penalty shootout and is recognised at world level as one of the best in the business – shortlisted for the World Player of the Year Award and named in the FIH World All Stars Team three times. Today, years on from her first Olympic Games, and having stepped down from international duty with almost 300 caps, Helen continues to play at club level for Cambridge City and coach at a variety of schools and clubs. Alongside this, she continues to study psychology, inspired by her experience in battling back from the doubts of previous injuries, and her experience of elite performance and winning teams. In the 2017 New Year Honours Helen was awarded an MBE for services to
