COG’S ‘DANG’ GROUP DAZZLES WITH DATA AT GLENDALEVIZ COMPETITION
COG employees demonstrated their technical expertise during the Department of Organizational Performance’s annual GlendaleViz Competition at the Glendale Civic Center on Aug. 29.
Members of the Glendale Data Analyst Networking Group (DANG!) worked in groups to determine whether they thought different graphs committed “crimes,” meaning they used information in a misleading way
Stephen Gushue, our Business Intelligence and Analytics Officer, engaged the group in discussions about the data and shared tips for using Power Query.
Human Services Coordinator Elise Smith won first-place, Field Operations Program Manager Lisa Wilson took the prize for second runner-up and Recreation Coordinator Kyle White earned first runner-up for their individualized dashboard entries. They are pictured on the top left with Gushue. Modeled after Iron Viz, the world’s largest data visualization competition, in this city event judges evaluate dashboards on their design, analysis and storytelling

EMPLOYEES GAIN STRATEGIC SKILLS IN BALANCED SCORECARD
Did you know that 49 COG employees recently completed the Balanced Scoreboard (BSC) training to help enhance our strategic plan?
The Balanced Scoreboard (BSC) is our strategic planning and management system of choice. It’s used to communicate what we strive to accomplish and to align our work and prioritize projects, products and services. The BSC system also allows us to measure and monitor our progress.
To offer employees the BSC foundational knowledge needed to implement our strategic plan, our Department of Organizational Performance, in coordination with the Balanced Scoreboard Institute, set up two formal courses: Balanced Scoreboard Essentials and Key Performance Indicator (KPI) Essentials. Our city plans to provide 150 training allocations over a three-year period.
