NOW OPEN! The online application process for 2017 Gleaner scholarships is now open. Since 1980, the Gleaner Life Insurance Society Scholarship Foundation has awarded 22,514 scholarships totaling more than $2.6 million. Gleaner plans to award 100 competitive scholarships in 2017.

The 2015-16 Samaritan year came to a close at the end of August, and the totals provide a glimpse into the ways our members are working to improve their communities.

In October, Gleaner Life hosted its fourth annual Gleaner Day and surpassed last year’s total thanks to the collaboration between Gleaner Life Insurance Society, Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan and The Henry Ford. Held Oct. 1 at The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan, Gleaner employees and Benny the Benevolent Lion welcomed guests and collected donations for the food bank. Items and donations collected that day, plus Gleaner’s $1,500 match and an additional gift match from Weingartz's Mow Down Hunger, were enough to provide 14,383 meals. Gleaner thanks all who helped feed Michigan’s hungry.

played at the Country Inn Assisted Living Center. Members joined them and helped with singing along, visited with residents and provided refreshments for all.

Award for volunteering at the local senior center, Red Cross and anywhere else he is needed. Patriotic Activity #2 — There was a chill in the air Oct. 22 when arbor members volunteered to help the Friends of Cardington with a cemetery walk to visit the graves of six Civil War-era Cardington residents and learn about their lives. The participants portrayed characters dressed in vintage costumes and shared their stories with walkers interested in repairing the historical monument. Community Outreach Activity #6 — Arbor members met at Cardington Park Oct. 29 to help the Winter’s family pop and prepare 500 bags of kettle corn to treat those who participated in the Friends of Cardington Halloween activities. Health & Wellness Activity #7 — Arbor members toured the new Morrow County Medical Health Center. Special Holiday Activity #10 — Arbor members helped with a pancake breakfast at the senior center to kick off the countywide United Appeal drive.

Following breakfast, arbor members prepared a steak dinner for the community that evening at Edison Methodist Church.

Youth Action Day #5 — Arbor members and youth held a party for the residents at Hope Ministries. The arbor provided pumpkins for residents to decorate and cider and doughnuts. Elderly Support Activity #8 — Arbor members served Greenfield Village Nursing Home residents cookies and punch and gave each one an artificial pumpkin to help decorate their rooms for Halloween.

Environmental Activity #3 — The arbor donated and planted three trees — a flowering crabapple, a Crimson Cloud hawthorn and a mountain ash — for the village of Elberta.

distributes food to over 200 needy families, many of whom are migrant workers, each week. Bev Hiller presented him with a $200 check, plus 48 $10 gift cards for food stores and 300 pounds of nonperishable food items donated by arbor members. Joy Robinson of the Hillsborough Parks and Rec thanked the arbor for its continued support and passed out parking passes for the Trunk & Treat event Oct. 28. Kelly Kowell of My Warriors Place gave an update on construction of a new building on their property and the volunteer work that is needed. She also shared that she has written a book about her experiences and the loss of her son in military conflict; all proceeds from the book will go to My Warriors Place.

Patriotic Activity #2 — At their September meeting, arbor members welcomed Phil Weitlauf, president of the Michigan War Dog Memorial, who gave a presentation on the Michigan War Dog Memorial cemetery and the history of war dogs. He shared that during the Vietnam War, 3,800 war dogs were left behind because of an order from Congress that cited the complicated logistics of returning them to the United States. That’s why the Michigan War Dog Memorial is going to construct a Vietnam K-9 Memorial Wall, which will include the names of the 3,800 dogs that were left behind. It will be 22 feet long and 6 inches wide and made of black granite.

Patriotic Activity #2 — Arbor members purchased groceries, paper products and toiletries for veterans. They then delivered them to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7542 in Birch Run, where they would be separated, bagged and delivered to the Veterans Food Pantry in Saginaw.

Wimauma, Florida, schoolchildren in a safe and nurturing environment, spoke of their work, accomplishments and the necessity to help children in need. Arbor president Bev Hiller presented a $300 check to the fund for art supplies and thanked everyone who contributed books to provide an additional $700. The arbor also heard from three additional speakers at its October meeting: Tom of the Gaudalupe Food Pantry explained how the volunteer pantry receives, warehouses, processes and

Chester Arbor (OH) Community Volunteer Recognition #1 — Arbor members joined together at St. John’s Lutheran Church for a chili dinner and desserts. They recognized Nadia Kerman with a youth Community Volunteer Recognition Award for her work with special-needs youth. Kyle Breece received the adult CVR Award for his work with his church’s food pantry and keeping the scorebook at local games. Dwight McFarland was awarded the senior CVR g lea ner life.org

Environmental Activity #3 — Arbor members met at Entrican Bible Church to plant two trees next to where a permanent bench will be placed for church members to enjoy.

Grand Arbor (MI) Wild Card Activity #9 — The arbor coordinated with the Sparta Church of the Nazarene to put new shingles on the home of Sherri Chapman, who recently lost her husband and needed help with her roof.

The arbor also provided lunch for the volunteers.

Grand Blanc Arbor (MI) Patriotic Activity #2 — Arbor members handed out American flags at the Grand Blanc homecoming parade.

Greater Flint Area Arbor (MI) Community Outreach Activity #6 — Arbor members collected donations for the Humane Society of Genesee County, including cat and dog toys, pet food, newspapers and cash. The arbor also donated Kongs (chew toys for dogs to help with anxiety from being caged). Arbor members enjoyed learning about homing pigeons and watching Michael O'Sullivan release his pigeons for a practice run. Wild Card Activity #9 — Arbor members participated in the fifth annual Harvest Hoedown for the Hungry at Jewel Golf Course. The arbor donated $100 to sponsor the master of ceremonies and DJ. Arbor members also donated 20 pounds of food.

On Oct. 12, arbor members also participated in Gleaner’s Random Acts of Kindness Day in a variety of ways: helping a patient get to her hospital appointment in a wheelchair, making cookies for an injured neighbor, giving extra-large tips to a waiter and a hairdresser, picking up roadside trash, pulling weeds at a community garden, and sending cards and making calls to friends recovering from surgery or not feeling well.

In celebration of Gleaner’s 122nd birthday, Maple City Arbor (MI) members delivered donations of $250, fresh apples and chocolate to WLEN Radio’s Thank a Vet program and the Lenawee Historical Society.

Gulf Coast Arbor (FL)

Adult Day Program, spoke with arbor members about meeting the needs of caregivers through a program she designed called The Missing Piece. The social activity program is designed for people with mild to moderate memory loss who are living at home. It provides individuals with a place to visit and enjoy while their caregiver tends to scheduled activities such as joining friends for lunch, shopping, housekeeping or attending appointments. The arbor donated $100 to the program.

Each insulated bag contained a new bath towel, washcloth, toothbrush, toothpaste, Gleaner lip balm, Gleaner hand sanitizer, comb, razor, shampoo, body wash, deodorant and tissues. After assembling the bags, members delivered them to the Salvation Army for distribution.

Community Outreach Activity #6 — The arbor hosted a blood drive at St. Jude Church and invited parishioners to donate.

Harmony Arbor (MI) Health & Wellness Activity #7 — The arbor welcomed Brenda Roberts, director of the Michigan Assisted Living Association’s Quality Assurance and Education Program, who spoke about helping loved ones of those with dementia cope. Harrison Arbor (OH) Community Volunteer Recognition #1 — The arbor presented Ann Grime with the Community Volunteer Recognition Award for her volunteer work with her church and at Life Connection, Relay for Life and United Way’s Stuff the Bus, among other organizations and events.

Hawthorne Arbor (IN) Health & Wellness Activity #7 — The arbor hosted a 5K run at Oak Hill Elementary School, where they supplied beverages and snacks for the 294 runners.

Wild Card Activity #9 — Arbor members collected gently used shoes over a few months for local migrant families. The arbor donated $435 to purchase additional

shoes and socks from area thrift and retail stores as well as cold water, soft drinks and candy to pass out when members visited three migrant home parks. All responded greatly, and there were laughs from all ages as shoes were observed, sized, discussed and decided upon.

Heritage Arbor (MI) Community Outreach Activity #6 — Arbor members cooked and served breakfast to the Davison community before the start of the annual Davison Pumpkin Fest on Main Street. A total of 183 people visited the arbor’s tent and enjoyed pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee.

Health & Wellness Activity #7 — Arbor members cleaned a three-mile stretch of highway north of Otisville.

Maple City Arbor (MI) In celebration of Gleaner’s 122nd birthday, members performed random acts of kindness throughout Lenawee County.

First, the arbor visited WLEN Radio and donated $250 to its Thank a Vet program.

Next, the arbor surprised the Lenawee Historical Society with a $250 donation.

The arbor also brought fresh apples and chocolate to both locations.

Mill Creek Arbor (IN)

Mt. Pleasant Arbor (MI) Elderly Support Activity #8 — The arbor held an ice cream social for residents of Crestwood Village Assisted Living, catered

by Doozie’s Ice Cream. In October, members visited the Commission on Aging in Mt. Pleasant, where they helped plant three maple trees purchased by the arbor.

North Baltimore Arbor (OH) Wild Card Activity #9 — The arbor shared in the success of Liberty Benton Junior High’s cross-country season by hosting the team for a 1.5-mile jog from the Swope residence to a pizza parlor for a celebration meal. Special Holiday Activity #10 — Members hosted a Float Your Boat activity at Maranatha Bible Church’s fall festival, in which children tried to blow a boat down a plastic gutter from one end to the other.

Members also assisted with other parts of the festival, including food service and a puppet show.

Oakwood Arbor (OH) In September, the arbor helped clean up the town after a three-day weekend of events for Oakwood High School’s homecoming. In October, the arbor decorated a tree at the John Paulding Historical Museum.

Plank Road Arbor (MI) Health & Wellness Activity #7 — The arbor helped host a 5K with Breckenridge High School’s cross-country team.

Members handed out water and bags of candy to participants and directed runners at various points in the race.

Youth Action Day #5 — The arbor hosted a banquet for South County Pop Warner football players at the Guse Corn Maze. The arbor provided hot dogs, s’mores and beverages. Guests made their way through the maze, decorated pumpkins, bobbed for apples and rode the tractor train.

Coaches also provided trophies to each football and cheerleading participant. Wild Card Activity #9 — The arbor collected items for the La Porte County Small Animal Shelter from a list of immediate needs.

Members purchased $220 worth of supplies for the shelter.

South Fairfield Arbor (MI/OH) Community Outreach Activity #6 — The arbor sponsored Ag Fest for all third-grade students in Fulton County, Ohio. Over two full school days, students visited 13

Portage Center Arbor (OH) Environmental Activity #3 — Nicki Kale of the Wood Soil and Water Conservation District visited the arbor and presented information on a number of topics, including monarch butterflies and other pollinators.

Rivertown Arbor (MI) Environmental Activity #3 — The arbor cleaned up a stretch of road in Cedar Springs, Michigan, collecting three bags of trash. The arbor sponsors the road cleanup in honor of its first reporter, Christopher O’Neill.

Health & Wellness Activity #7 — The arbor collected food donations for the Caring & Sharing Together Food Pantry. In addition to collections, the arbor purchased 400 pounds of food for the pantry through a regional food bank.

Sulphur Springs Arbor (IL) Health & Wellness Activity #7 — The arbor hosted a table at the Ta Ta Trot 5K Run/Walk for breast cancer awareness.

Members passed out water, sports drinks, energy bars and Mission for LIFE® wristbands to participants.

Community Outreach Activity #6 — The arbor and volunteers from Tecumseh Middle School purchased healthy snacks to fill 700 Friday food packs for Communities in Schools.

Special Holiday Activity #10 — Members helped out at the Pumpkin Roll in Vassar, Michigan. At this event, members purchase a pumpkin for $1 and roll it down the road, attempting to hit specific goals. The arbor provided popcorn, and members worked at multiple stations.
