Please also review the information summarizing the results and good works coming out of our 58th Biennial Convention on Pages 12-20. We congratulate newly elected Board Director Russell Cunningham, as well as re-elected Board Directors Donna Baker, Margaret Noe and Todd Warner. See the tribute to 20-year director, outgoing Chair Suann Hammersmith, for her distinguished board service since 1997 on Page 19. As always, Gleaners leave the convention host city better off than when we came, as you will see from the story on Page 14 .

Since 1894, Gleaner has helped communities thrive through its mission to provide financial protection, fraternal benefits and volunteer opportunities for its members.

In September, Gleaner partnered with Lenawee Cares, a program of the Lenawee Community Foundation, for the second annual Gleaner Life Gives campaign. Home Office employees were invited to donate to help their favorite charities.

“Employees can choose from a comprehensive list of local, not-forprofit entities doing good works for the less fortunate among us.

The Society provides a dollar-for-dollar match on employee gifts up to the first $1,000 contributed, and absorbs the campaign’s administrative fees, so employees know going in they are multiplying the impact of their generous gifts to their favorite charities,” said Kevin Marti, president and CEO of Gleaner Life Insurance Society.

For this year’s Gleaner Life Gives campaign, Home Office employees pledged $67,489 to support the community, which was an increase from last year’s total.

“We are thankful for the generosity of our Gleaner Life employees to our annual campaign to assist those in need in our local community,” said Marti. “Gleaner is proud to be a leader in charitable giving in Lenawee County.”

With every year that passes, we greet each new beginning with a positive outlook and an open mind. We give a little so we can grow a little. So why not use this year to apply for one of Gleaner’s Give and Grow grants?

Gleaner offers $250 Give and Grow project grants to members age 12 and above. Each month, eight grants are awarded throughout our 13 licensed states to be used toward charitable projects.

If you’re a Gleaner benefit member, follow these simple steps to get started. Gather a group of at least four other individuals, who need not be Gleaner members. Then come up with your charitable project and apply. It’s that easy! And you will walk away so fulfilled. Give and Grow grants not only leave communities with a lasting impact, they touch the participants behind each project. Here are a few ideas to help make Give and Grow grants a truly valuable experience — for the recipients, your volunteers and for you.

Make it a family affair.

Use the opportunity to teach your children about the value of charitable giving and making a difference close to home. Your family will have fond new memories to cherish.

Partner with a local team. Impart athletes with the gift of giving and building values through teamwork in their own community. They might just build a new fan club along the way.

Follow the leader.

Today’s youth look up to community members for guidance and motivation.

Gleaner members vote on board members, constitution changes At Gleaner Life Insurance Society’s 58th Biennial Convention in Traverse City, Oct. 13-15, members voted on board members and changes to the constitution during the business meeting portion of the weekend. They also voted on Supreme Arbor officers.

Cunningham brings over 30 years of corporate managerial experience to his new board role.

As service manager, Cunningham coordinates multimillion-dollar accounts for Konecranes, the world’s largest crane company. He also owns and operates multiple real estate assets and a refuse business in and around Van Buren, Ohio.

Elections for the Board of Directors Four nominees were on the ballot, along with a write-in candidate, to fill four seats on the Board of Directors. Members elected Donna Baker, Russell Cunningham, Margaret Noe and Todd Warner to its Board of Directors. While Baker, Noe and Warner were up for re-election, Cunningham joins as a new board member. Constitution changes Brought forth by the Law Committee, members voted on constitution changes intended to help address upcoming corporate governance regulations, as well as specific recommendations received by the Society from the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services at the conclusion of our recent triennial examination. Members rejected the proposed changes.

A message from Chairman Terry Garner It is with pleasure and honor that I announce and accept the position of Chairman of the Gleaner Life Insurance Society Board of Directors. I thank the Board for their vote of confidence.

The Board is grateful for your participation at the 2017 Gleaner Convention in Traverse City. The delegates, Board, management team, members and guests worked hard for the good of the Society. We also had some fun along the way. The Board appreciates the work of our President Kevin Marti, the senior management team, staff and everyone else who worked hard to make the Convention a great success.

58th Biennial Convention impacts Traverse City charities Giving is a vital part of Gleaner’s history, and it remains a focal point at each biennial convention. This year, Gleaner members made an impact in Traverse City by donating to seven charities: Father Fred Foundation, Cherryland Humane Society, Goodwill Inn, Grand Traverse Senior Center, Reining Liberty Ranch, The Rock Youth Center and Traverse City Salvation Army Food Pantry.

assistance to those with less in a five-county area since 1989. Gleaner members and staff participated in a community service project for the organization where they packed 240 bags full of birthday items.

At the charity auction, a crowd favorite at Gleaner conventions, $5,856 was raised for the foundation.

Arbors also donated charity totes to the organizations. Filled with items from each charity’s wish list, the totes go a long way toward assisting organizations and the individuals who benefit from their services. The arbors added a special touch by decorating their totes.

The Salvation Army Food Pantry extended a personal thank-you, acknowledging Gleaner and all the arbors for their wonderful creativity, generosity and caring hearts.

“I have never witnessed such an approach to giving back to a community. We all attend meetings in different cities, and never have I seen such a display of community support,” said Wells. “Everything will be put to good use and aid us in providing services to our seniors. Your goodness will be paid forward. You have inspired us, and I hope to start a similar program in my own professional circle.”

When Gleaner members met Dan Buron from the Goodwill Inn, they soon realized his connection to Gleaner was personal — and it became personal for those involved, too. Dan, who is executive director and CEO of Goodwill Industries Northern Michigan, hasn’t always lived in Traverse City. Before settling there, he worked for Goodwill in Adrian, Michigan.

“Many organizations and people visit the Grand Traverse area, but few leave an impact behind when they leave. The Gleaner organization not only made a difference for the families, children and adults at the Goodwill Homeless Shelter but the entire community — truly demonstrating servant leadership!” Dan wrote.

The weekend concluded on Sunday with an afterglow program where representatives from each of the charities thanked the arbors for their support. Gleaner thanks everyone who made these donations possible and helped make this year’s convention a true success.

Remarks from President Marti Gleaner Life held its 58th Biennial Convention in Traverse City Oct. 13-15. To kick off the business meeting, Gleaner Life President and CEO Kevin Marti recognized many individuals who play key roles behind the scenes to help ensure Gleaner’s success. He also shared information about Gleaner’s financial stability. Read an excerpt of Marti’s speech below.

Thank you, Madame Chair [Suann Hammersmith].

We greatly appreciate your leadership on the Board and in our community back home and as president of the South Fairfield Arbor for the past 10 years or more. I honestly don’t know where you get the energy!

The senior management team we have in place today is one of the strongest, if not the strongest, in the Society’s history. That’s not to cast any aspersions on some distinguished Gleaner retirees since our last convention, who are in attendance here today — namely Sherry Nino and Jan Goulart. Sherry retired as vice president of fraternal operations, and Jan as vice president of human resources and administration.

Sherry did a great job preparing her replacement, Michelle Horn, our assistant vice president of community engagement. And Jan did a great job finding her 16

replacement, Deb Elliott, now our vice president of human resources & administration. Sherry and Jan, would you please stand and be recognized for your extraordinary years of service and contributions to the Society. And Ells Stout, retired president & CEO, please stand and be recognized.

I also truly believe we have the strongest and most diverse Board of Directors by backgrounds and experience in the Society’s 123year history. The management team and Home Office employees do greatly appreciate our full Board’s support and service these past five years, without which we could not have accomplished so much. Please join me in thanking our Board.

I have been fortunate to serve on the American Fraternal Alliance Board for the past three years, and recently was honored to be chosen as the chair of their board for 2018. As part of my service

on that Board, I was privy to first-hand research the AFA has been doing on how fraternals need to adapt for success in the future, which actually led me to recommend the “community engagement” name. The focus groups showed most people have little knowledge of what a fraternal was or did. The term fraternal evoked images of college fraternities and secret societies.

“Community engagement” speaks to our mission much more clearly to the public at large.

We are excited to report to the members and delegates here today, and on the live stream, the great news of our increasing financial strength and community impact.

You will see that we have fully recovered from the financial crisis of 2008-2009, despite the ongoing depressed interest rate environment we still operate in today.

Our all-time high for member surplus, I am advised, was just over

$94 million achieved in July 2008.

The financial impact of the Great Recession on our investment portfolio and our pension plan left us at $80.8 million of surplus at year-end 2012. We’ve since been able to restore our financial strength, and hope to finish 2017 at an all-time high for member surplus and security! A lot of hard work and sacrifice has gone into making this all possible on behalf of you, our valued members.

We consciously restricted the growth in our asset base through limiting the flow of three percent guarantee and higher annuity renewal premiums, and re-pricing our life and annuity financial solutions in response to the continued low interest rate environment.

We continue to maintain and retain our “A-(Excellent)” rating from A.M. Best with a stable outlook, in large part because of those difficult choices we made, with the full support of our Board, and of A.M. Best. We are obtaining a second independent rating from Kroll Bond Rating Agency this fall. We think it might be a good idea to give A.M. Best a little competition.

Through our arbors, our members, our agents, our Board and our Home Office employees, Gleaner continues to make a profound difference after 123 years of service! There has been, and continues to be, a 110 percent commitment on the part of our team to the fraternal model.

In 2018, we anticipate being able to once again aggressively grow our life insurance premium and hopefully our total membership as measured by certificate count.

In the past few years, with low interest rates, our fixed deferred annuities and fixed life insurance plans have not resonated in the market. We have introduced this past July all new term life and whole life solutions with 10 to 20 percent improvements in

pricing afforded by the new 2017 CSO valuation mortality tables, reflecting lower mortality rates and longer life expectancies. In addition, next month we expect to introduce our first-ever indexed universal life insurance solution, making us only the second fraternal to do so in the U.S. Arell Chapman and the IT team found a way to save the Society a multi-million dollar investment in a new system, which had been the primary impediment to IUL development the past several years.

In mid-2018, we expect to follow that up with our first-ever indexed annuity solution, putting Gleaner back on the radar of more agents and more prospective members.

Our indexed financial solutions will offer new and interested current members the opportunity to participate in any gains in the S&P 500® Index up to the plan cap, which we expect for IUL will be 11 percent at introduction, while offering a minimum 0.5 percent annual return, even if the S&P 500® Index declines in any given year. Be sure to talk to your Gleaner independent agent about how our new life insurance solutions, in particular, can help protect you and your family, and help you build your supplemental retirement funds!

Since the last convention, we also created a new subsidiary company called Gleaner Financial® (GFC), which will provide fee-based financial planning services for our current members who do not have an assigned agent, and for potential new Gleaner members. We have acquired multiple financial planning practices already, and started two Forum Magazine \ Winter 2018 \

new Gleaner Financial® branch offices, one in Okemos, Michigan, and one in Flint, Michigan. We have hired two experienced, GFC employee financial advisers to run the branches. We expect to expand our GFC operations to states other than Michigan in the coming years. As of August 31, 2017, GFC now has some $215 million of total assets under management already! While the assets of the Society have not grown recently, the Gleaner Financial® initiative gives another way to grow our asset base in any interest rate environment. We expect the GFC operation will be contributing to operating gains of the Society sooner rather than later. GFC provides strategic advantage for the Society by diversifying our future sources of our operating net income longer term, and expanding our distribution channels (with both independent agents and now GFC employee financial advisers), while also improving our enterprise risk management profile. A.M. Best was even complimentary of our GFC subsidiary efforts. You 18

can anticipate hearing more and more about GFC in the coming years, as we expand our reach and impact. These efforts are led under the capable direction of Senior Vice President of Distribution and Community Engagement Dan Gordon. Thank you, Dan, for your capable leadership.

Before we move on to the Law and Nominating Committee Reports, I want to give my strong endorsement to the recommendations of both committees. The Constitutional amendment before you today for your consideration, and hopefully your approval, addresses key weaknesses in our nominating and election processes that were identified in our recent examination by the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services. The changes we are proposing will help us begin to comply for the time when Michigan adopts the NAIC Corporate Governance regulations, which are currently working their way through various state legislatures. At last count, 20 states have passed the

enabling legislation, including seven states we operate in today — Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Ohio and Virginia.

There are four additional states planning adoption later in 2017, including Missouri where we also operate. We understand that NAIC accreditation requirements will essentially force all states to pass this regulation eventually, in order to remain accredited.

When Michigan conducted their recent examination of Gleaner, they operated as if they had already adopted the corporate governance regulations, so we believe the corporate governance regulation is coming to Michigan sooner, rather than later. Passing this Constitutional amendment addresses the governance issue for now, in as unintrusive a fashion as possible, while still maintaining the ability for a Board of Director applicant, who is not ultimately chosen by the Nominating Committee, to nevertheless run from the convention floor, having been vetted the same way as all other candidates on the approved slate. In other words, by completing an application, outlining their particular expertise and community engagement and business experience, submitting to a formal background check, and participating in an in-person interview with the Nominating Committee. Having well-vetted and well-qualified board members will serve both our members’ and our regulators’ best interests equally well in the future. The proposed amendment is the responsible step to take at this time, and we encourage, and thank you in advance, for your consideration and support. www.gleanerlife.org

The proposed amendment received majority support from the Law Committee — a five to three vote, and was approved by the full Board by a near unanimous six to one vote.

With respect to the report of the Nominating Committee, and having had the opportunity to work closely with Chair Hammersmith for five years now, the last four as Chair of the Board, and with Directors [Margaret] Noe and [Todd] Warner since their election in 2013, and Director [Donna] Baker since her appointment to fill Richard Bennett’s seat in 2015, I feel compelled to offer my unequivocal and wholehearted support for their re-election to our Board. They bring broad professional backgrounds and business expertise to our Board, along with their passion for

Gleaner’s continued success as both a fraternal benefit society providing financial security to its members, and for being a beacon of light in our many and various community engagement activities.

Thank you also to Vice Chair [Terry] Garner and Directors [Daniel] Sutton and [Mark] Wills for their hard work and support over the years. We lift up Terry and Jeannie Bennett as they forge ahead through life, having lost the loved ones closest and dearest to them since our last convention.

May God bless them, and continue to bless the Society as we enter our 124th year of service.

After all, a lot can change in the span of a short time — from marriage to new children, divorce and deaths of loved ones — so you need to make sure your beneficiary information is up to date.

Living from paycheck-to-paycheck until you finally have enough money is a real hassle. Unfortunately, this is the gloomy reality of over three-fourths of Americans, according to a survey from Bankrate.com. This means that very few Americans have a savings for emergency situations and therefore have nothing to fall back on when times get rough. Imagine what would happen if you had to deal with a sudden financial crisis such as a rent hike, expensive bills, overdraft fees or car repair costs.

Would you be able to survive with what you have? If not, it’s time to reconsider how you are spending and saving your money. Here are some tips for those who live from paycheck-to-paycheck:

1. Create a budget.

3. Dine in.

This might seem like an incredibly obvious answer, but a Gallup poll shows that two-thirds of Americans do not keep a budget of household finances. Start by tracking what you spend on everything and by estimating how much you want to spend. For example, your monthly rent shouldn’t exceed onethird of your monthly paycheck. You should also plan out how much you spend on groceries, transportation and other important things. This will give you a sense of control over your financial situation and really help you map out how much you’re spending on what items.

Eat at home as much as you possibly can. Eating out, even at fast food restaurants, can be quite expensive.

Even a $10 sandwich at a restaurant can appear quite expensive when you realize that the same thing can be made at home for a fraction of that price.

Stock up on groceries at your local supermarket and prepare food beforehand. If you’re going out for the night, pack some dinner to bring with you later on. This will help you resist the temptation of spending unnecessary money when you’re hungry.

About 19 percent of workers don’t stick to their planned budgets often because of buying food.

Abstaining from meals here and there can really make a big difference.

2. Use cash, not credit.

One way to feel like you have more control over your finances is by paying with cash rather than credit cards and debit cards. It’s easy to lose track of how much money you are spending when you use a card, but quite easy to know when you are paying with dollar bills. You can withdraw a certain amount of money at the beginning of each week to ensure that you don’t spend more than that amount. This way, you will have an easy way to tell how much you have spent and how much you have left.

4. Cut back on your expensive hobbies.

How much are you spending each month on entertainment? It’s time to critically analyze what you do for fun and find cheaper alternatives. Instead of going to the movies, stay in and watch something on Netflix. Instead of paying for your monthly World of Warcraft subscription, play a free game like Forum Magazine \ Winter 2018 \

Hearthstone. That being said, you’re allowed to treat yourself from time-to-time, but you should be cautious of how much you are actively spending.

5. Ask yourself, “Is it really worth it?”

Whenever you are tempted to buy something new, pause for a second and ask, “Is it really worth it to spend money on this?” For example, let’s say you are tempted to buy a $10 movie ticket for the latest blockbuster film. Would you be perfectly fine with waiting until it comes out on Redbox? How else would you spend those $10 by not going to the movies? Weigh your options and determine if the purchase is really worth it or not.

6. Sign up for costsaving memberships and deals.

If you look hard enough, you can usually find certain ways to save money on things that you already buy.

The savings might seem like they’re only a few bucks here and there, but they can add up to huge amounts over time. For example, some public transportation systems offer monthly passes. If you want to buy one, first calculate the cost of each round-trip and how often you will be using it. Will it save money to buy the monthly pass? If so, why not go for it? Similarly, many grocery stores offer membership discounts, often for free. Signing up for a membership will make each shopping trip a little cheaper, which adds up to big savings over time.

7. Use helpful apps and programs that can save you money.

If you have a smartphone or a tablet, there are literally thousands of apps at your fingertips. Many of them are more useful than your average social media or free-to-play mobile games. For example, 24

GasBuddy reports the prices of local gas stations so that you can compare and contrast the cheapest options. Ibotta gives you back money for the items you purchase. Sure, you will only get about fifty cents back for every gallon of milk, loaf of bread, or bunch of bananas that you buy, but those savings will add up over time, especially if those are items you buy every week. Lastly, you should also make an account with Paribus.co. Paribus is an excellent website that has been featured in publications such as TechCrunch and The Verge. It allows you to get your money back after purchases if there have been price changes. For example, Amazon might be obligated to refund you if you recently bought a $30 sweater that was lowered to $20 a few days after you bought it. Paribus will get you back 75% of the difference, keeping the last quarter for themselves.

8. Tone down on energy use.

Your monthly utility bills often tack on a hefty chunk of extra costs to your already expensive rent. Find ways to cut back on your electric and energy bills as much as you can. Try limiting the time you spend each day in the shower by setting a timer for yourself.

Unplug your electronics when you’re not using them, especially at night. Plugged-in electrical devices often still suck up energy, even when they’re turned off or the device is fully charged. Turn off lights whenever you exit a room. Replace your regular light bulbs with energy-efficient alternatives. A little bit of savings here and there can make a big difference.

9. Don’t spend money just to spend it.

Many people like to treat themselves to something nice when they get their paycheck or a new job.

While this is certainly a nice thing to do for yourself, you should cut back on it until you feel financially secure enough to justify extra purchases. Sure, it might be nice to treat yourself to a nice dinner, but is it really necessary? Would staying at home and dining in be that much worse? Always keep your finances in mind before making any major decision. www.gleanerlife.org

10. Change the major problems affecting your finances.

Okay, so you have found cheaper alternatives for your food, games and energy consumption. But why stop there?

Take into consideration how much your car and gas is costing you. If you are driving a gas-guzzler or some other expensive vehicle, consider selling it and buying a fuel-efficient hybrid car instead. What about your rent?

Consider getting an additional roommate or looking for somewhere cheaper to live. Even if your monthly rent is $100 lower, that still amounts to an extra $1,200 a year.

Learning good financial habits is one of the most valuable things that anyone can do to stop the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle. Forming these good habits and techniques will not only help you when you’re trying to survive from paycheckto-paycheck, but can make you noticeably richer later in your lifetime. Practice these important money-saving techniques until you can find a way to get back on your feet and live comfortably.

Gleaner at a Glance

On Oct. 7, 2017, Gleaner Life held its fifth annual Gleaner Day at Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation and Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan. This event brings Gleaner members together to enjoy a fun outing with family and friends, and also provides awareness of the problem of hunger while raising donations for Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeast Michigan.

Gleaner Day 2017 provided 7,500 meals to Michigan’s hungry. Donations came to a total of 103 pounds of food and $2,500 in cash.

Gleaner arbors also provided 32,000 meals to Michigan’s hungry. Arbor members participated by collecting donations in their own communities to give to local food banks. Donations came to a total of 400 pounds of food and $10,800 in cash.

In southeast Michigan, more than 670,000 people are food insecure1. This is why Gleaner Life Insurance Society sponsors Gleaner Day each year. Thanks to all who helped feed hungry neighbors in need.

More recently, members enjoyed a fun-filled weekend at Kalahari Resort and Waterpark in Sandusky, Ohio. Nearly 700 members and guests enjoyed all that the country’s largest indoor water park has to offer, from water attractions and an arcade to fine dining.

On Saturday night, guests gathered for an all-you-can-eat pizza buffet provided by Gleaner. Benny the Benevolent Lion, Gleaner’s mascot, was on hand for the festivities and a meet-and-greet with members, young and old.

NOW OPEN!

The online application process for 2018 Gleaner scholarships is now open. Since 1980, the Gleaner Life Insurance Society Scholarship Foundation has presented 2,614 scholarships to tomorrow’s best and brightest students. Gleaner plans to award 100 competitive scholarships in 2018.

A panel of judges will rank all applications and select the top 100 students. Gleaner’s top 50-ranked applicants will receive a one-time award of $3,000, and another 50 will receive a one-time award of $1,500. Gleaner scholarships are awarded to individuals from a wide range of backgrounds with various goals and dreams, and are another benefit of belonging to Gleaner.

To apply for a Gleaner scholarship, a student must: 1. Be a Gleaner member.

2. Be a high school senior or high school graduate.

3. Plan to or currently attend an accredited vocational/technical school, college, university or graduate school within the United States.

Arbors in Action Fenner Nature Center campers spend day at the zoo

Capital Arbor (MI) (pictured right) held a youth action day on Aug. 4 at the Potter Park Zoo in Lansing, Michigan. Fenner Nature Center day campers started the day with an animal encounter program. Afterward, everyone enjoyed a picnic at the nearby shelter. Hot dogs, chips, watermelon, cookies and box drinks were served.

“The weather was cool and windy, but kids had their fill of hot dogs,” said Karen Lowder, arbor secretary.

“The cooler weather is good for viewing of animals in their zoo enclosures.”

After the picnic and cleanup, everyone enjoyed a tour of the zoo. There were two new moose from Alaska, and the rhinoceros, eagles, penguins, lions, tigers, otters and many other animals were on full display.

Arbor impacts special education co-op Rolling Prairie (IN) held a benevolent activity at Boston Middle School in La Porte, Indiana, for students at the special education co-op. Arbor officers Jackie Thompson and June Lenig furnished games, with each member working a station. Games included pins-in-the-bottle, bowling, ring toss, Bozo buckets, rocket pitch and pumpkin bean bag toss.

Members selected games that could be played by every participant, even those in wheelchairs.

Boston teachers, helpers and the principal thanked the arbor for the wonderful activity.

Food pantry benefit drives communitywide involvement Riley Creek (OH) (pictured right) held a food drive for Bluffton Food Pantry at Suter’s Corn Maze in Pandora, Ohio. Free admission to the maze was given in exchange for donated food items. A total of 195 people donated to the drive.

Youth selected a prize for each game played, and each student was given a Gleaner gift bag to use for collecting their prizes. The students had so much fun and couldn’t thank the arbor enough. Thompson presented middle school teacher Patricia Rosenbaum with a check for $750 to purchase items for the sensory room. Snacks were then served to the group.

“This was a win-win-win for our community,” said Kathi Dunlap, arbor secretary. “Gathering food for the pantry, engaging young people to donate and care about hunger in their community, and also blessing the folks who run Suter’s Corn Maze, who have mentored and employed countless youth and young adults in the decades they’ve been in Putnam County, Ohio.”

“Organizations don’t seem to realize this group of children need special attention and activities also,” said Lenig.

It was a beautiful day, with lots of food donated, and a lot of fun for members and those attending.

Gleoma Arbor (NE) (pictured above) volunteered time to prepare and send packages of cookies to soldiers.

Members met at Stephanie Andresen’s house to package cookies donated by Cookies for Soldiers. A special card was included with each package. Once assembled, they were sent to a unit at Fort Riley, Kansas, before the soldiers’ deployment to South Korea.

Adrian Arbor (MI) (pictured left) visited and donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Ohio. The facility, located in Toledo, Ohio, is available to families whose kids are receiving medical care at Toledo hospitals. The cost is free, and meals are also provided at no cost. Donations from the arbor included an assortment of supplies worth $200. The arbor also added to the facility's collection of aluminium can pull tabs, which earn money to pay for meals. Arbor members toured the facility while there.

North Baltimore Arbor (OH) (pictured on this page) volunteered for the Up Up and Away 5K race in Findlay, Ohio. All proceeds went to support the Hancock County Special Olympics, and arbor members were joined by two guests representing the organization. They displayed the Gleaner banner, shared information about Gleaner and arbors, and served water. During the event, hot air balloons flew overhead. Several unique balloons were spotted in the shape of a monkey, dragon and scarecrow. The arbor members served 216 cups of water to over 500 runners.

Russ Cunningham and Rod Lucas cleaned up cups that were thrown down by runners. Afterward, the volunteers enjoyed doughnuts and juice before packing up the supplies to be delivered to the finish line. It was a great team effort.

Members and troops pulled weeds, raked loose gravel and put down large stones. They also enjoyed pizza.

The arbor has worked with the scouts for many years, and the troop always reaches out to request help with projects.

Madison Arbor (MI) (pictured left) hosted a healthy meal-making activity for community members at the Madison school cafeteria in Adrian, Michigan.

Tastefully Simple consultant Paula Williams provided the products, which included instructions on how to assemble and cook each meal. The arbor covered the cost of the products and additional grocery items. Ten participants made five meals: Creamy Swiss Chicken, Pesto Chicken Breasts, Zesty Vidalia and BaconWrapped Chicken, Roasted Garlic Pork Loin, and Superb Beef Stroganoff. Arbor members also prepared two additional meal kits to give to families in need.

Mid Michigan Arbor (MI) (pictured right and below) held a patriotic activity on Aug. 8, 2017, at the VFW Hall and grounds.

Guests attended a ceremony to retire American flags put on by a local Boy Scout troop. Those in attendance included scout leader Bill Layle, his troops and their families, veterans, women's auxiliaries and Mid Michigan arbor members. The scouts retired 17 flags. At the end of the ceremony, they handed out flags to each attendee. The arbor furnished pizza, pop and water.

Sulphur Springs Arbor (IL) (pictured left and below) sponsored a pancake breakfast at the Gardner Lions Hall in Gardner, Illinois. Ten members and nine nonmembers set up, cooked, served and cleaned for the event.

They also collected $300 worth of supplies for local schools.

Buckeye City Arbor (OH) (pictured above and right) members volunteered for the National African American Male Wellness 5K Run and Walk. They passed out water to walkers or anyone needing nourishment during the five-hour wellness walk. Five tents were purchased for providing attendees with health screenings.

This free offering has helped save lives for many years, and the arbor was happy to contribute again. Members also shared information about Gleaner Life Insurance Society, the Ferrell Insurance Agency and the value of life insurance. Promotional items were handed out to attendees.

Chester Arbor (OH) teamed up with Williamsport Grange #1815 for the third annual celebrity chef omelet breakfast held at the Morrow County Senior Center in Mount Gilead, Ohio. Community leaders from government, law enforcement and local businesses cooked and served omelets and breakfast

sides. Donations were accepted to provide items for the Morrow County Sheriff Department’s K-9 unit and to purchase a protective vest for its dog.

Emerald Echo Arbor (OH) purchased backpacks for children in need. Arbor members then took the children on a shopping trip to fill the packs with supplies for the school year.

Entrican Arbor (MI) hosted the Six Lakes Seniors at the Belvidere

Community Church in Six Lakes, Michigan. Seniors were served pizza, ice cream and cookies.

Following lunch, card bingo was played until every person won, calling out “Gleaner� when they had a winning card. They also had a bubble-blowing contest. All winners received a $5 gift card to the dollar store in Greenville.

During the games, arbor members were available to assist. All seniors had a fun time and thanked arbor members many times.

Orchard Arbor (MI) hosted a rock-painting party for the local community. Members provided rocks, paint and brushes, along with ideas of inspirational messages to paint. The Kindness Rocks Project is receiving recognition around the world.

The arbor has registered with the Kindness Rocks Project website to generate more visitors for their recent activity. They had over 168 children and adults participate in the event.

Plank Road Arbor (MI) planned and hosted a Jazz on the Green event at the Plank Road Museum in Breckenridge, Michigan. The arbor presented two donations at the event: $250 to the Breckenridge Music Boosters and $750 to the Breckenridge Historical Society. Ice cream was served, and everyone had a great time.

Samaritan totals for 2016-17 Gleaner arbors and members serve their communities.

The 2016-17 Samaritan year came to a close at the end of August, and the totals provide a glimpse into the ways our members are working to serve and donate. Whether through service projects or charitable giving, our members are making a difference in their local communities.

Recipe File Honey-Topped Pecan Breakfast Bread

2 (8-ounce) packages crescent rolls 2 tablespoons butter, melted ½ cup sugar 1-2 teaspoons cinnamon ¼ cup pecans, chopped Bread Unroll dough and divide into 16 triangles, then brush with melted butter. Mix sugar, cinnamon and pecans.

Roll each triangle in mixture, starting from the side opposite a point and rolling toward the point. In a greased 9-by-5-by-3-inch loaf pan, place eight rolls, point side down. Place remaining rolls on top of first layer. Bake at 325 degrees for about 45 minutes.

Remove from pan and turn right side up. Prepare topping and drizzle over warm bread.

Topping ¼ cup powdered sugar 2 tablespoons honey 2 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon vanilla ¼ cup pecans

2 pounds lean beef stewing meat, cut in 1-inch cubes 3 tablespoons minute tapioca 2 teaspoons salt 2 teaspoons sugar 1 bay leaf Pinch of basil or thyme 1 medium onion, diced 1 stalk celery, diced or chunked 6-8 medium carrots, cut in 1-inch slices or strips 6-8 medium potatoes, peeled and quartered 1 cup tomato juice Spread meat in bottom of 3-quart baking dish.

Do not brown. Mix tapioca and seasonings together and sprinkle over meat. Add vegetables and pour tomato juice over all. Cover tightly with foil and bake a minimum of four hours in very low oven at 250 degrees.

Variations: Substitute 2-3 cups V8 Spicy Hot 100% Juice for the tomato juice. Use only 1 teaspoon salt.

Combine all ingredients except pecans in a small bowl. Heat, stirring until smooth and bubbly. Stir in pecans. Cool slightly, about 15 minutes, before drizzling over bread.

Korinne’s Korner Some days, it’s tough to turn on the TV and watch the news. Horrible images of individuals not following the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Occasionally, we see glimpses of hope, when ordinary people do extraordinary things. It lifts me up and always brings a smile to my face that good people are out there in the world doing the RIGHT thing.

We don’t need to foil a crime or stop a carjacking to make the world a better place. Small acts of kindness keep the earth spinning day to day. A favorite coffee mug hanging in our kitchen reads: “Be a Flamingo in a Flock of Pigeons” Oh, how I love that phrase! It reminds me to think outside the box (which doesn’t take much effort) and be willing to let the light shine on me. By greeting a stranger with a smile, holding a door open, assisting someone who can’t reach the high shelf at the grocery, or letting a car enter the flow of traffic — the list of possibilities goes on and on. Nothing earth-shattering, mind you, just plain kindness.

As I always tell you, my friends and neighbors often function as my “test kitchen” when trying new recipes.

However, my recipe for the new year is a tried-and-true one I found 25 years ago and now is an all-time favorite of Kevin, our kids and my buddies. So heat up the stove and get cooking!

Snickerdoodles 1 cup shortening (½ cup margarine; ½ cup Crisco) 1½ cups sugar 2 eggs 3 cups flour 2 teaspoons cream of tartar 1 teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon salt Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cream the shortening, sugar and eggs, then gradually add the rest of the ingredients. Shape into balls and roll in a mixture of ¼ cup sugar and 1-2 tablespoons cinnamon. Bake 10-12 minutes.

We truly value organizations such as Kiwanis helping to promote youth leadership and development. The council will use the money for the youth organizations and maintaining a safe location for youth organizations in Paulding County to meet.
