According to The Wall Street Journal, 38% of people reinvest their required minimum distributions (RMDs).1 Like most Americans, you could reinvest or use your RMDs to pay for day-to-day living expenses.

But did you know that you can provide your loved ones with the gift of financial security by using your RMDs to purchase life insurance?

A required minimum distribution, or RMD, is the amount that you must begin withdrawing from your IRA or other qualified account after you reach age 70½. Contact a tax professional for more information on RMDs.

From the president Dear Members: Fall has arrived! As autumn sets in and students return to school, it is our privilege to announce the recipients of our 2015 scholarships. Since 1980, the Gleaner Life Insurance Society Scholarship Foundation has awarded over $2.4 million in educational funding to our best and brightest members and their families. Learn more about this year’s scholarship recipients beginning on the next page.

The summer picnic season was a success. Thank you to those who took time out of their busy schedules to share fellowship and eat fried chicken and fixin’s with us! We enjoy visiting with Gleaner members, awarding scholarships and sharing our fraternal achievements and future plans. Particularly pleasing were the silent auction fundraiser and $5,000 matching gift that the Society provided for the victims of the unfortunate June tornado in Coal City, Illinois, where many Gleaner members reside.

We hope to see you soon at the 57th Biennial Convention in Schaumburg, Illinois. This year, we’ll be honoring June Lenig as our Fraternalist of the Year. Mrs. Lenig’s dedication to volunteer service is truly admirable, and it is our great pleasure to recognize her. We’ll also be honoring Gleaner agent Jim Hiller as our Fraternal Agent of the Year. Mr. Hiller not only has dedicated himself to helping members secure their loved ones but has made significant contributions to our Florida arbors. Learn more about these honorees on pages 16 and 17.

On page 15, you will find some interesting demographic information on Gleaner’s membership. As you are probably aware, we are duly admitted to conduct operations in 13 states. However, we have our business and our fraternal arbor outreach concentrated in six states today — Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Florida and Nebraska. See the charts on page 15 to get an idea of the breakdown by premium (first year and renewal), certificates in force and active numbers of arbors for our top states.

Our third annual Gleaner Day at Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan, was again a huge success. We were able to raise a significant number of donations of nonperishable food items to provide thousands of meals to our friends and neighbors who need a helping hand — isn’t that what we are really all about as Gleaner members?

Let’s hope we have a beautiful fall season, full of great colors and temperate weather, especially at all those football games and other fall sports you’ll be attending! And may you and your family and friends be blessed with good health and happiness as we enter the upcoming holiday season.

There is good news to report on the Society’s year-to-date financial strength. Despite continued pressure from the low-interest-rate environment, causing our bond portfolio yield to drop to 4.32 percent, our operations in the first half of 2015 have added $2.2 million to both our net income and surplus. We achieved a net income of $4.2 million in 2014 and $2.1 million in 2013. Our surplus has now rebounded from its recent low of $80.8 million at the end of 2012 to $87.2 million as of June 30, 2015.

2015 Scholarship Recipients Since 1980, the Gleaner Life Insurance Society Scholarship Foundation has awarded over $2.4 million in educational funding.

In 2015, Gleaner awarded 126 scholarships, providing $134,000 to tomorrow’s best and brightest students.

Gleaner scholarships are one of the many benefits available to our members and their immediate families. The Society values the importance of ongoing education and recognizes those members who seek to take their education to the next level. As the costs of higher education increase, we are proud to offer our members a helping hand by providing scholarships.

Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. There is no age restriction, and both traditional and nontraditional students are encouraged to apply.

Applications for 2016 scholarships, which are completed entirely online, will be available at www.gleanerlife.org/scholarships beginning Nov. 1, 2015.

From one generation to another 2015 Fraternalist of the Year June Lenig impacts youth in her community June and her late husband, Daniel, were working in their yard one day when they were approached about re-establishing the local arbor (service club). The Lenigs enlisted the help of Ruby and Harold Olson, and the four got to work calling people each month. Their hard work paid off. Today, Rolling Prairie Arbor has over 30 active members.

At the time, and for several years following, June was a Gleaner social member. Her husband and children were members, so volunteering and getting involved was a natural fit for June, whose nurturing instincts were evident at an early age as she helped care for her younger siblings.

The only shortage June Lenig finds in her volunteer efforts is time. Seldom able to decline (or not volunteer for) an opportunity, June has made a lasting impact in her community. As a longtime member, arbor secretary/treasurer since 2000 and supreme chaplain from 200305, she has organized events for the special education co-op at Boston Middle School, represented Rolling Prairie Arbor (IN) on the local food pantry committee, helped to pioneer the Gleaner Math Facts Program at her local elementary school, volunteered for LaPorte County’s Relay For Life, served as a 4-H leader and poultry superintendent, and attended numerous Gleaner conventions. In 2013, June was recognized as the Indiana Fraternal Congress’ Fraternalist of the Year, and now it is Gleaner’s turn to recognize her for her achievements in volunteerism.

“Helping anyone in need, that’s what life is really all about,” said June, who remembers the care strangers provided to her and her family as a child. As one of 11 children, June recalls being blessed by the generosity of others, and she wants to give back.

“It’s all about serving your community,” said June, who enjoys working with children and seeing them make progress. “My goal in life is to help children learn life skills so they will become successful adults.”

As a volunteer at the local school district, June often works with children, tutoring them in math. “It’s such a rewarding feeling when a concept finally clicks for them,” said June. She also helps with the special education

co-op, where she often works oneon-one with youth. “It’s so rewarding to see them learn daily life skills and to witness the joy it brings them.”

Another way June serves her community in LaPorte, Indiana, is by teaching leadership skills to others. Just as she benefited from the generosity of others and felt inspired to give back, she hopes her work encourages youth and younger families to get involved. “We’re building our future leaders,” said June.

She has served as a 4-H leader for 34 years and has been the poultry superintendent for most of those years. Under June’s leadership, the program has grown from 42 to over 160 participants.

“Over the past 50-plus years, June has built a legacy of fraternalism and volunteerism equaled by none, by being a county and local leader of adults and youth,” said Eugene Shorte, LaPorte County Fair manager. “Just stop and realize how many hundreds of youths’ lives — and adults’ — she has touched, all for the betterment of their lives, developing future leaders of our community and county, and creating an atmosphere of fraternalism beyond expectations.”

Her efforts and their lasting impact have not gone unnoticed. Gleaner proudly recognizes her as the 2015 Fraternalist of the Year.

Fraternalism drives agent success in life and career Gleaner congratulates 2015 Fraternal Agent of the Year Jim Hiller As a commercial insurance salesman for many years, Jim Hiller climbed the corporate ladder as an agent, sales manager, district manager and licensed insurance trainer before he met Ellsworth Stout, former Gleaner Life president.

“He introduced me to fraternalism,” said Jim, who started his career with Gleaner after moving from Michigan to Florida.

Even though Jim’s career prior to that encounter was in the commercial field, fraternalism was a natural fit for the lifelong volunteer. “Giving of yourself is what fraternalism is all about. Helping people help others in the community to make the world a better place is important,” said Jim. The Gleaner sales representative has been selected as the 2015 Fraternal Agent of the Year. Established in memory of Russell L. Buck, a board member who also served the Society for 40 years as a sales representative and volunteered extensively to improve his community, this award is presented to a Gleaner sales representative who exemplifies involvement in Gleaner’s fraternal activities and volunteerism.

Today, Jim and his wife, Beverly, volunteer with Bay Area Arbor, where they invite neighbors and friends to get involved. Beverly serves as the arbor’s president. Their encouragement proves to be effective, with more than 50 members attending the monthly meetings and activities. Bay Area Arbor supports the local community in many ways, serving the Mary and Martha House, Elmira's Wild Life Sanctuary, My Warrior’s Place and S.E. Guide Dogs.

Jim works to get new members for Bay Area Arbor as either social members or through the sale of Gleaner products, but Jim never pushes people to purchase products. Instead, he serves as a resource to arbor members who have questions about the products. Knowing his vast knowledge, many arbor members seek advice when needs arise. “I first earn their trust, and that’s why they end up buying products,” said Jim, who fully believes in his work and lifelong mission.

“I believe life insurance is a miracle. By the stroke of a pen, a person can solve many financial problems and create an estate for their family,” said Jim, whose hard work has been recognized many times throughout his career. “I sell with enthusiasm, which means God or spirit within. And enthusiasm sells — without it, nothing happens.”

Arbors in action What is an arbor?

An arbor is a Gleaner service club. These service clubs are made up of members (people who own a Gleaner life or annuity product) and social members who believe in giving back and helping others. Arbors are funded by Gleaner Life Insurance Society. Since 1894, Gleaner arbors have benefited their communities through service projects and donations. Because arbors are funded by Gleaner, members can spend their time giving back rather than fundraising.

The Samaritan program helps arbors to complete a wide range of projects throughout the year. The more Samaritan activities

an arbor completes, the more funding it receives to use the next year. Activity choices range from educating youth to visiting historical sites to supporting the elderly. One of the most popular activity choices encourages arbors to complete an environment-themed activity. Here’s how several arbors have completed their environmental activity this year.

1. Bavarian Arbor (MI) members Jerry and Lisa Roberts passed out spruce saplings at Kirk and List Elementary Schools, where the arbor taught students how to transplant the trees at home. 2. studies class at Unionville-Sebewaing Area High School have diligently worked to reclaim the woods and trails bordering the school. The project involves clearing paths, picking up trash, trimming plants and planting perennials at the trail entrance.

Caro Arbor (MI) worked with the Destination Imagination team and Kingston robotics team to wrap trees that were later donated to students at Bad Axe and Kingston elementary schools.

Floyd Arbor (MI) members met with 50 fourth-grade students and their teachers to share the history of Arbor Day. The arbor also gave each student a pine seedling and demonstrated how to properly plant it.

Grand Arbor (MI) purchased live caterpillars for the preschool class at West Oakview Elementary. For two weeks, the students watched as the caterpillars turned into butterflies for the class to release.

Heritage Arbor (MI) members partnered with fifth- and sixthgraders from Hahn Intermediate School to wrap 950 seedlings. The next day, the arbor presented an informational video and passed out the seedlings to students at the school.

Mill Creek Arbor (IN) members weeded, cleaned up flower beds, mulched and planted geraniums at New Carlisle Community Church.

4. Plank Road Arbor (MI) teamed up with second-graders from Breckenridge Elementary to clean up flower beds at the school and to plant additional flowers. 5. Harmony Arbor (MI) members held an Arbor Day event at North Elementary School. The arbor gave each student a blue spruce seedling and also planted a Crimson King maple at the school in honor of a terminally ill student. 6. Findlay Flag City Arbor (OH) co-sponsored an Arbor Day event with the Park Foundation, planting eight red oak and sugar maple trees with help from Liberty Bend School students and Marathon Oil. 7. Mid-Michigan Arbor (MI) held an Arbor Day poster contest for students at Auburn Elementary School. The winners each received a $25 Visa gift cards and other participants received coupons for Slurpees. 8. Crystal Lake Arbor (MI) members Ken Holmes and Patrick Cutler planted a Crimson King maple at the Betsie Valley Trail near a bench installed by the arbor.

Recipe File As the leaves begin to change and a chill fills the air, warm up with some favorite fall recipes from our arbor members.

1 large onion, chopped 1 garlic clove, minced 2 chicken bouillon cubes, dissolved in 2½ cups water 1 can (14½ to 16 ounces) diced tomatoes 1 can (15¼ ounces) kidney beans, drained 2 medium carrots, sliced ½ cup elbow macaroni ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon oregano 2½ cups water Grated Parmesan cheese

In a 3-quart casserole, microwave onion and garlic on high for 3-4 minutes or until tender. Add bouillon and the rest of the ingredients except Parmesan cheese. Cover and cook on high 15-18 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Stir once, if you like. Serve with the grated cheese.

Makes four main dish servings, about 230 calories each.

1 pound ground beef ½ pound bacon, cut in small pieces 1 cup finely chopped onions 1 can pork and beans, drained 1 can red kidney beans, drained 1 can baby lima beans or yellow butter beans, drained ½ cup brown sugar ½ cup white sugar ½-1 cup ketchup 1-2 tablespoons cider vinegar 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional) 1 teaspoon dry mustard

Brown beef, bacon and onions. Add remaining ingredients. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour, or put in

a slow cooker for indefinite time on low. Variation: For moister beans, do not thoroughly drain them.

4 eggs 2 cups flour 2 cups sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 cup oil 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 teaspoons cinnamon ½ teaspoon salt 1 small can pumpkin Nuts or raisins to taste 3 ounces cream cheese ¾ pound powdered sugar 6 tablespoons butter, softened 1-3 tablespoons milk

Mix all but the last four ingredients. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Cream together last four ingredients to make frosting.

Life has a tendency to get away from us, especially heading into the holidays. We are overcome with family commitments, travel arrangements, cooking, gift exchanges, parties — and the list goes on and on.

I find myself managing daily stress by staying committed to my usual routine: reading my daily devotional ( Jesus Calling by Sarah Young — very uplifting and amazing), exercising, eating healthy and getting plenty of sleep.

As we move into fall, I begin to recall in my own mind Christmases of the past, with plenty of fond family memories.

As many of you can attest, cooking, smells and flavors spark memories of times gone by as well. I have included a caramel popcorn recipe that was passed down to us from Kevin’s grandmother. It’s been a housewarming/co-worker/neighbor treat given by the Marti family for many years, so please enjoy!

As I close, I’d like to share a favorite saying from an unknown author that can be found on our refrigerator and above the door as you leave Kevin’s office at Gleaner: “Peace. It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of these things and still be calm in your heart.”

Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Pop three bags of microwave popcorn. Spray two roasting pans with nonstick cooking spray and divide the popcorn evenly between them.

Combine and boil for 5 minutes: •

2 cups brown sugar

2 sticks margarine

•

1/2 cup white Karo® syrup

•

1/2 teaspoon salt

Remove from heat and stir in 1/2 teaspoon baking soda and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Immediately pour over popcorn and stir well.

Bake 1 hour at 250 degrees, stirring every 15 minutes.

Separate popcorn as you cool it on waxed paper. Store finished caramel popcorn in an airtight container.

The book is appropriate for children ages 6-11 and provides hands-on activities, a journal and scrapbook that will help inspire them as they record their journey of giving and charity.

The Nickels, Dimes and Dollars Book: A Wise Kid’s Guide to Money Matters The Nickels, Dimes and Dollars Book will help kids make smart decisions about how to spend, share, save, earn and grow their money. The more they learn to manage money, the more it can help them to create a comfortable and meaningful future.

Th is activity book is a conversation starter and an educational tool that inspires children to develop valuable skills and healthy habits that can support their well-being and fi nancial futures. Appropriate for ages 6 and up.
