Gleaner Life Duration Term

Security when you need it most Life insurance should reflect life — an opportunity with countless options to pursue and protect your dreams. But even with term life insurance, the need for coverage can vary drastically. Securing your children’s education may be important for the next 15 years, but paying down a mortgage might be a priority for the next 20 years. Thoughts from the President Dear members: As summer winds down, we are headed into the beauty of fall colors. Our children and grandchildren and their dedicated teachers are back in school. The Summer Olympics are over, and it’s on to football, soccer and the World Series. If you are like me, you also can’t wait for the 2016 political season to be over and done with!

We appreciated the opportunity to meet with our members and scholarship recipients at the summer picnics. These picnics have been a Gleaner tradition for over 30 years. In 2017, we will be trying out some new venues and ideas to reinvigorate our summer gatherings and attract even greater numbers of members. Keep your eyes peeled for updates on these exciting efforts.

In August, we rolled out our new and improved website for your use at www.gleanerlife.org. See Page 20 for more information on these features and improvements.

Hopefully, many of you were able to join in our Gleaner Day community engagement event at Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan, on Oct. 1. We will report on our food-gathering efforts to combat hunger in the next issue of Forum Magazine.

Please remember that the scholarship application period opens Nov. 1. And remember, too, that Gleaner members are eligible to receive an award of $3,000.

We share in the sorrow of the family, friends and members who knew and loved longtime Gleaner representative Joe Ann Steele, who passed away recently. Joe Ann was instrumental in growing the Society, its membership and its arbor presence in Lenawee County over the past 30-plus years of involvement with the Society. See the tribute on Page 13. in her daughter Susan Steele’s commitment to advance her mother’s legacy, and Gleaner’s unequivocal commitment to provide outstanding service and financial strength and security to its members.

We want to thank Norm Woltjer, Gleaner representative and member of Rivertown Arbor (MI), for his recent contributions to the company archives, which he passed on from retired agent Clare Tincknell. Included among the treasure trove of information is the book “Gleaner Collection of Readings and Recitations, Compiled for Use of: Local Arbors, County Federations, ETC.” The cost was 25 cents per copy or $2.75 per dozen. The cover also mentions “National Gleaner Headquarters Detroit, Michigan 1916.” The foreword stipulates that the selections contained “are wholesome and instructive, and the value of this little book should appeal to every Lecturer or other officer who is interested in Arbor activities that are worthwhile.” The foreword goes on to say, “Our educational work is one of the most important departments of Gleaner activity; but if such work is ‘Dry as chips,’ it is valueless. It must be spicy, interesting, entertaining. A bit of humor will rivet a thought ...”

CONGRATULATIONS 2016 Scholarship Recipients Since 1980, the Gleaner Life Insurance Society Scholarship Foundation has awarded over $2.6 million in educational funding.

In 2016, Gleaner awarded 101 scholarships, providing $225,000 to tomorrow’s best and brightest students.

Gleaner scholarships are one of the many benefits available to our members and their immediate families. The Society values the importance of ongoing education and recognizes those members who seek to take their education to the next level. As the costs of higher education increase, we are proud to offer our members a helping hand by providing scholarships.

Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. There is no age restriction, and both traditional and nontraditional students are encouraged to apply. Applications for 2017 scholarships, which are completed entirely online, will be available at gleanerlife.org/scholarships beginning Nov. 1, 2016.

Congratulations to all of our 2016 scholarship recipients. We look forward to your future success!

Picnic Memories Every summer, Gleaner members join others in their state or regional association for a day of food, fun and fellowship at Gleaner’s family picnics. These picnics provide members with the opportunity to celebrate their sense of community while honoring the year’s scholarship

recipients. Gleaner provides the main dish and entertainment, and each guest brings a dish to pass and their own table service. Gleaner also hosts Benny’s Auction at each picnic to raise funds for a local charity.

Family picnics are held in Indiana, Illinois, Northern Michigan, Southern Michigan, Michigan’s Thumb Area, Ohio and Nebraska.

I don’t often endorse products or companies; however, I wanted to give a big shout out to Gleaner Life Insurance.

My grandmother (Florence Carpenter) provided [Just For Kids®] for her greatgrandchildren, which made John eligible for a one-time scholarship. We received the email last week that he was awarded $3,000 for being a member of Gleaner after filling out their scholarship forms last winter. This means that grandma turned a very modest investment into something great. While I can’t thank her today for this, I know she would be proud and happy that she provided for him even after she was gone. So as a birthday gift to your grandchildren or great-grandchildren, go online and look into it. There are more reasons than simply making a person eligible for a scholarship. Then again, who wouldn’t want some extra dollars!

Remembering Joe Ann Steele It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of longtime Gleaner general agent Joe Ann Steele, who died on July 24 at her home in Adrian, Michigan. Joe Ann leaves behind a legacy of excellence in life insurance and annuity sales and member service. As a strong supporter of Gleaner Life Insurance Society, she was instrumental in founding several of our Lenawee County arbors and was a frequent fixture at Gleaner’s Conference of Excellence. Already a pillar of the community, Joe Ann also became a local celebrity through her Saturday morning radio show on WLEN Radio 103.9.

Joe Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Harry, in 1996 after 35 years of marriage. Her dedicated work as an agent will be continued by her daughter, Gleaner agent Susan Steele of Joe Ann Steele Financial Center in Adrian. Joe Ann is also survived by her two sons, Dusty and Rusty.

Those wishing to make a contribution in memory of Joe Ann should consider the Lenawee Humane Society or the local chapter of the American Red Cross.

GLEANER gives back

Agents give back to community

Each year, Gleaner recognizes its top-producing agents at the annual Conference of Excellence, which was most recently held in July at Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Our agents were recognized for their efforts to help their clients find financial freedom through life insurance and annuities. Agents also took a break from their meetings and helped out the local community — a Gleaner staple.

“This was a great way to show our agents a glimpse of the many ways Gleaner’s arbors serve,” said Steve Lowder, Gleaner agent since 1986. For many of these agents, it’s their philanthropic attitude that helps them succeed in this industry, so it’s not surprising that they jumped at the chance to serve.

The agents partnered with Friends In Service Helping in Carson City, Nevada, where they filled backpacks with deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bar soap, Q-tips, shampoo and moist wipes to help those who are homeless in the community. “We enjoyed the opportunity to serve and would have been happy to do more,” said Lowder.

This year, we introduced the American Fraternal Alliance’s Race to 100, a campaign encouraging members of fraternal organizations to write to their representatives in Congress and request support for House Concurrent Resolution 19 (the “Fraternal Resolution”).

As of Sept. 6, the American Fraternal Alliance has secured 102 co-sponsors for HCR 19! This important legislation gives U.S. representatives the chance to publicly acknowledge the important contributions that fraternal benefit societies make to the nation’s financial and social well-being. At the beginning of the campaign, we had the support of about 70 members of Congress. Because of your dedicated advocacy, we now have the support of 102!

Thank you for participating in the Race to 100 campaign. Our members are what make Gleaner great, and we hope you continue to share the story of how we all work together to engage communities and improve lives. By educating our lawmakers on the important role that fraternal benefit societies play in our nation, we can help garner congressional support for our cause and prevent legislation that would jeopardize our tax-exempt 501(c)(8) status.

Arbor SPOTLIGHT Birch Run Arbor fills generation gap Birch Run Arbor (MI) members work hard to get youth involved in community service projects to instill time-tested values. “Our philosophy is to get the youth involved in giving back so they learn to take pride and ownership in their community,” said Sherri Hollerback, Birch Run Arbor secretary.

In partnership with Birch Run High School, the arbor often teams with students for projects. That partnership is making strides as the young people are encouraged and energized to participate and help plan service projects. In fact, the Birch Run students came up with the idea to visit Heartland Health Care Center-Fostrian in Flushing to paint artwork on windows, plant handicap-accessible gardens, and deliver lap quilts and other items to use as bingo prizes.

The volunteers left after school on May 24 and drove to Heartland-Fostrian, where they wasted no time getting to work. Art students teamed with residents, who chose the animal theme the artists painted on the windows. The artists and residents worked together to individualize the panels for each resident.

“The patients loved it. Each window belongs to a certain patient, and they were very proud of their masterpiece — they took ownership in their project,” said Hollerback.

While several students painted, others got to work planting vegetable, herb and flower gardens. “We made handicap-accessible planter gardens for the residents to maintain throughout the summer,” said Hollerback.

The student volunteers not only painted and planted but visited with the patients throughout the afternoon. This project is just one example of the partnership Birch Run Arbor has with its local school district.

“We are fortunate to have a good connection with our high school and middle school.

Our arbor president and another member are teachers, so we are able to partner with students in grades five through 12 on different projects,” Hollerback said.

Birch Run Arbor’s presence in the community helps to bless the lives of student volunteers and the numerous organizations they support year-round. If you’re interested in learning more or getting involved in a local arbor, email forum@gleanerlife.org.

Black Swamp Arbor (OH), along with community youth at Live Oaks Cemetery in Paulding, Ohio, picked up branches, trimmed around gravestones, took flowers off graves and helped fix sinking gravestones.

Every year, Gleaner arbors team up with youth organizations for JOIN HANDS DAY. This joint effort of fraternal benefit organizations brings together multiple generations of volunteers to complete community service projects. Here’s how Gleaner arbors joined forces with young volunteers to improve their communities for JOIN HANDS DAY in 2016.

Vulcaneer Arbor organizes mock disaster Even though teenagers know that distracted driving is a real issue, it’s often difficult for them to understand the devastating effects that can result from texting while operating a vehicle. That’s why youth from Vulcaneer Arbor (MI) campaigned to bring a mock disaster to their school.

Vulcaneer Arbor youth members Sarah Bartels, Chase Walker, Kyle Walker, Jacob Langley and Marshall Fabbro got approval from the school board and then met several times to align their vision and plan the event. Once the plan was approved by the school counselor, they began contacting local organizations, including the Vassar Police Department, fire station, EMT, 911 dispatch, Martin Funeral Home, Fabbro Towing and Bavarian Bleachers. They also worked with Vassar High School’s art and drama departments to cast actors and makeup artists along with a narrator.

On May 13, students in grades 9-12 gathered in bleachers and watched as the devastating impact of distracted driving was put on display.

A teacher read the script as the accident was acted out. In short, a student driver sent a Snapchat message while driving and hit a classmate.

A witness called 911 and interacted with a real dispatcher, and then other agencies responded just as they would have in the event of a real accident. The classmate struck by the distracted driver died, and the driver was arrested and charged with several crimes.

“This was one of those events that really touches people. Some of the teachers were crying, and the 300 students watching were silent during the entire demonstration,” said Laura Walker, Vulcaneer Arbor reporter, helicopter nurse and mother of student volunteers Chase and Kyle.

Two days before the mock disaster, Vassar High School students welcomed Sam Howell from St. Charles, Michigan, who spoke about his personal experience with distracted driving, which caused a brain injury. His mother, Maureen Howell, assisted with the presentation, since Sam was difficult to understand at times. As an Eagle Scout and athlete, Sam was described as an all-American boy before his accident, which left him in a coma for three months. Today, Sam gives presentations and speaks about distracted driving.

While Vulcaneer Arbor members were available and helped with the event, they let the youth do most of the work. “Volunteering helps youth become leaders, discover talents, and teaches skills they can’t learn in textbooks,” said Laura Walker. “It also helps them understand the importance of giving back.”

Heart of Florida Arbor (FL) members joined with the fifth-grade class, parents and teachers of Philip O’Brien Elementary School to build a raised vegetable garden and complete landscaping near the fifth-grade wing of the school. The students started growing the plants from seeds in April and then transplanted them to the raised beds.

South Fairfield Arbor (MI/OH) organized a bake sale and car wash with youth partner Goats and "Udder" Things 4-H Club.

Three “celebrities” stopped by — Gleaner President and CEO Kevin Marti, who purchased baked goods and had his vehicle washed; and Mike Bell, the former mayor of Toledo, Ohio, and the owner of the well-known Mancy’s Restaurants, who made donations. The fundraiser generated $324, and the arbor made an additional donation of $750 to their youth partner for restoration of the sheep barn at the county fairgrounds.

LEARNING knows no age limit

Benefits of lifelong learning Everyone knows it’s important to eat healthy foods and exercise, but have you considered the importance of continual learning? Just because you graduated from high school or have a college degree or certification hanging on your wall doesn’t mean you should stop growing intellectually. After all, your doctor would never advise you to stop exercising once you reach a certain age, so why should you stop learning?

If the thought of learning brings back painful recollections of memorizing spelling words or pulling all-nighters studying, it’s time to adjust your expectations. Learning, just like exercising, can be broken down into small segments and scattered throughout the day by making a few simple adjustments. Try one or a few of the following to get started.

Helpful hint: Don’t toss that mail just yet. How many times have you received mail from your insurance or financial adviser that you only scanned or did not even bother to open? Cinnamon Tea

Mulled Wine

1 quart cranberry juice

3 cups Burgundy wine

1 quart apple juice

8 teaspoons brown sugar, or to taste

1 quart instant tea

2 cinnamon sticks, broken

1½ cups cinnamon-flavored candies

Ground nutmeg, to taste

Combine all ingredients and heat on top of the stove until candies are melted.

Makes 4 servings. For each serving, combine ¾ cup wine, 2 teaspoons brown sugar, ½ cinnamon stick and a dash of nutmeg. Microwave for 4-6 minutes on medium-high. For a nonalcoholic alternative, substitute grape juice for the wine.

Spiced Cider 1 quart apple cider

Wassail Cheer

½ cup sugar

4 cups apple cider

1 cup orange juice 1½ teaspoons whole cloves ½ cup lemon juice 2 sticks cinnamon Combine all ingredients and bring to a boil.

Let simmer at least 2 hours. Strain out cloves and cinnamon. Serve hot.

¼ cups lemon juice ¼ cups brown sugar ½ teaspoon whole allspice ½ teaspoon whole cloves ⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg In a medium glass bowl, combine all ingredients.

Microwave 8-9 minutes on high. Continue microwaving on medium for an additional 7 or 8 minutes. Cool slightly, strain into mugs and serve.

Korinne’s Korner “Life without music would B flat.”

I read that quote, and it made me laugh. I played piano for 10 years — second grade through high school. Practicing was not always my passion, but as the years went by, I came to enjoy playing. When our children were in grade school, we purchased a used upright piano, and all three took lessons. They are not accomplished pianists, but they have great memories and can read music, hence the quote above.

I listen to music in the car, when I walk, when I sew, walking the dogs — a lot. I should also mention that I don’t just listen, I sing. Just the act of listening and singing can lift your mood, clear your head and allow you to focus on what’s important. My new favorite song, “Beautiful Messes” by Hillary Scott, meets all the criteria I just mentioned. The refrain is: We ain't perfect, no, We ain't even close, We got holes in our hearts, We got scars we don't show.

But all that baggage we Keep on dragging around Anytime we start laying down.

Lay it down at the foot of the cross.

Give it to the one who can carry it all.

Even at our worst, to him we ain't lost causes, Just beautiful messes.

What a beautiful message! I can’t get enough of it, and it centers me immediately.

It’s always a pleasure to see so many of you at the Gleaner picnics. My contribution this summer was a cookie recipe I found online, and several of you suggested it be in my next Forum article. Here goes:

Trail cookies Cream 1 egg, ½ cup brown sugar, ¼ cup Crisco, ¼ cup margarine and 2 teaspoons vanilla until well-combined.

Mix in 1 cup flour, 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats, 1 teaspoon baking soda, salt to taste, 1 cup chocolate chips and ¾ cup corn flakes or any crispy cereal.

Optional additions: ½ cup nuts and ¾ cup shredded coconut Refrigerate dough in plastic wrap for at least 2 hours or up to 5 days.

Preheat oven to 350 F. Drop on greased or lined baking sheet 2 inches apart. Bake 10-12 minutes or until golden.

Cool completely.

Autumn is here, which means school is back in session. Some of

you might miss the freedom of summer, but remember: Every new school year is filled with new opportunities to do good things for

others. You should set some goals for good things you’d like to do.

Here’s a checklist of some ideas. See how many you can cross off the list before winter arrives.

• Make friends with a new student.

• Help your younger brothers or sisters with their homework.

• Set an example for others by behaving in class.

• Ask your parents to collect food for a local food bank.

• Thank your teacher.

Try to do one good thing every day so that it becomes a habit.
