Tying the knot Hindu style

Not all couples are looking for the same type of wedding ceremony experience, so when we saw some of the lovely photos on Facebook of Craig and Leanda Harmer from Healthy Guru in Beerwah, we were keen to learn more about their beautiful wedding ceremony. When did you get married? February 14, this year. Yes, we know a little corny but just so happens that it worked out that way. Where was your wedding? Rishikesh India – it’s a beautiful town on the foot hills of the Himalayan mountains. Most known in the West for where the Beatles stayed in the maharishi’s ashram. For us though we choose Rishikesh for it is such a magic place that embraces all types of yoga and the energy of Ganga river (known as the spiritual mother of India) is at its most purest. What was involved in your ceremony? We started the morning with a dip in the Ganga River – now to paint a picture. This river is running so fast and is at 10 degrees and 6.00am in the Himalayans (this was a very quick dip) this isn’t tradition but it represents purification. We then had a cleansing ceremony call a Haldi ceremony. We were painted in a paste made of turmeric, sandalwood, and rose water. The paste serves as a cleanser for the body and soul and signifies the bride and groom’s preparation and welcoming into married life. The main ceremony took close to three hours and was just the most amazing intimate experience we could have asked for. It started with us meeting in a common area all dressed up, we walked down to the Ganga with a three-piece band. Our guests consisted of two close friends from Deli India and close to 12 others from their friends and people we met through the hotel.

Guide We exchanged flower garlands and had a series of traditions that completed the ceremony. These included Vivaha-homa, (havan) where the sacred fire is lit across from the bride and groom. Gath Bandhan - the bride's chuney is tied to her groom's scarf as a symbol of their union. Saptapadi - the bride and groom take seven steps and make seven laps around the havan together while reciting a vow for each. Surya Darshanand Dhruva Darshan - they look to the sun to seek blessings for a creative and passionate life together. Could you have had a similar ceremony in Australia? If yes, would it have been as good? Yes of course you can, cultural weddings happen in Australia all the time. It really doesn’t matter where you get married as long as it represents what your union means to you. What was it that you loved most about the day? The ceremony was a Hindu ceremony yet we are not Hindu. The reason why we chose this type of ceremony was because it involves a spiritual connection between us. Our birth charts were produced by the priest prior to the ceremony day, this is so the ceremony was structured around our astrological connection. This means the vows, the prayers, the mantras and all the rituals are designed for supporting our life together in the harmonist way. What advice would you give to other couples about to plan their weddings? The whole idea of getting married is to share in a union with each other. Little details that are causing you big headaches are not worth the worry. We didn’t plan any colours, ceremony set up or music, we even chose our outfits only the day before. We had faith the day was going to be perfect and it was.

Guide At last a wedding story that’s all about the men… well, mostly! There are a few things harder or more daunting than a man proposing to the love of his life, especially when expectations are high that the moment will be unique and memorable. Well, a solution is at hand. Meet Poppy. Poppy is a perky, poppy-red Citroën Deux Chevaux that has charms beyond her years, and is a sure fire way to help jittery fellas pop the question. Owner and Poppy’s chauffeur, Andrew Jones said: “A gourmet picnic with berets, ‘Chocolat’ and ‘French Kiss’ sound tracks, and maybe even a mime, set in one of the Sunny Coast’s spectacular spots…well, you just can’t miss guys,” he said. “It’s all about giving her a very enjoyable personal experience that reflects you as a couple,” he said. Andrew and Poppy have had a great thing going ever since he imported and lovingly restored his little 2CV in 2014. What surprised him most was the impact the car had when people laid eyes on her. “I had complete strangers smiling and waving, and young children grinning and pointing at us,” he said. “I can think of worse ways to spend my days than making people smile, so I decided to start Simply Retro, The Little Car Hire Company,” he said. A Sunshine Coast local for over 20 years, Andrew believes that one look at Poppy reminds people of simpler times, when the journey was part of the experience and fun could still be classy and chic. “Less is more for me. These experiences should be relaxed, simple and unhurried; the way the world used to be before we all went mad,” Andrew said. So if people are thinking baguettes, Rosè, a picnic rug and a trundling, pillowy ride in something very French for their weddings, proposals, formals, or any other special occasion they could do a lot worse than petite Poppy at Simply Retro. After all, it’s all about you. For more information phone Andrew on 0421 637 687 or visit
