In this wedding feature we have included stories about a number of weddings that happened towards the end of last year. I would like to declare upfront that two of the lovely brides are very special young ladies and hold a unique place in the hearts of team GC&M News. Our congratulations and thanks to our current receptionist, the former Sarah Taylor-Fox, now Mrs Moffat who married at Dicky Beach and our former receptionist Gyan Lang now Mrs Talbot who married in Bali. While the weddings were very different, they both clearly shared one common element – there was plenty of love in the air on their big days which is something that we really hope for all the local couples who are currently planning their weddings. We are also looking forward to sharing the romantic stories of other (nonGC&M News related) couples later in the year, so if you would like to be a part of our September Wedding Guide we will put the word out closer to the time.

Family wedding trifecta!
By Sonia Clark Heidi Lawrence certainly had reason to feel blessed with not one, but three family weddings to celebrate – all in one year! The owner of Eclectic Dreams in Landsborough married her soul partner Zen last December, while earlier in the year, her son Christopher Lang married his long term sweetheart Chantelle Sheppard and her daughter Gyan Lang married her beau John Talbot. All three weddings had around 60 friends and family in attendance and each reflected the unique personalities of the couples, and in a special touch, the three wedding ceremonies had the same celebrant, the spiritually inspiring Beth Dancing Free. Son Christopher married his long term partner Chantelle (who he first met at Beerwah High School) at the Maleny Retreat on May 15. The wedding overlooked the Glasshouse Mountains and had a beautiful country rustic theme with lots of special handmade touches. Daughter Gyan enjoyed a laidback beach wedding in Bali on July 1. Gyan and John met online 18 months previously and knew they were meant to be together right from their first date. The wedding included a traditional Balinese blessing and was held in the stunning coastal area of Sanur. After experiencing the love and commitment of Gyan’s wedding, Heidi says she reflected that it was time to embrace her own life and fully participate in living. She went online and decided that she would only try it for a couple of weeks, in August last year. Within that timeframe she met Zen and the attraction and energy was instantaneous. Knowing intuitively that they had a soul connection, the couple embraced the relationship and they were married four months later in December, in a ceremony that also included ‘hand fasting’ (where the original tie the knot term came from) to symbolise the union of two individuals joining their lives together.

Heidi said marriage is a big life event and commitment to make in front of your friends and family. “You realise how defining it is as a coming of age ritual when you reflect back on the day and how it is also a heartfelt touchstone for those who are already married – the ritual touches everyone involved,” she said. In a wonderful continuation of the joyous rituals of life, Heidi is now looking forward to welcoming two new additions into the family with eldest son Shannon and his wife Carly, as well as Chris and Chantelle, expecting their first children later this year.

Holiday romance leads to marriage By Sonia Clark After 10 years together, Sarah Taylor-Fox finally married her beau Shane Moffat, in a gorgeous ceremony on October 3 last year. Shane and Sarah were childhood sweethearts who met initially through their families. Both families holidayed annually at the Dicky Beach Caravan Park where the couple first met as children. The ‘Dicky Beach Romance’ was rekindled each year on holiday until they officially started dating in January 2006. In June 2013, Shane proposed, allowing Sarah to spend the following year and a half planning the perfect wedding. Sarah is an extremely organised young lady who took on board all aspects of planning her dream wedding - in meticulous yet fabulous detail. The ceremony was held at Sir Leslie Wilson Park, Dicky Beach with around 150 friends and relatives looking on. Located on the headland between Dicky Beach and Moffat Beach, the spot suited the couple perfectly – being between where they first met and the beach which shared their married surname. Sarah wore a beautiful dress she had sourced on the Sunshine Coast which happily had just the right amount of sparkle and fitted her like a glove. The bridal party had three bridesmaids and groomsmen, and in a nod to the colour theme of the wedding (and Sarah’s favourite colour) the groom and groomsmen all wore pink socks and undies!

The happy couple
Sarah and Shane walked down the aisle to a Shania Twain song – ‘From this moment’ and after their vows they walked back as a married couple to ‘Love Story’ by Taylor Swift. The Reception was held at The Sunshine Coast Function Centre (Caloundra RSL), which proved an excellent venue with amazing staff and decor that was well suited to the theme of the wedding party. “We tried to make our wedding fun and memorable, which was our aim from the start,” said Sarah. “Right before our first kiss we stopped the proceedings and took a few selfies - I don’t think anyone saw that coming! We also did a surprise dance incorporated into our first dance so everyone could come up and dance with us,” explained Sarah. We wish Mr and Mrs Moffat a long and happy married life together.

Come home from your honeymoon and move straight into your own home From the day you get engaged you are planning your life together, and buying a home is the biggest purchase you will make … so you need to do it right. Our first tip is to not rush it. Research the area you want to live in. Does the area have everything you want such as good sports teams to join, community swimming pool and parks; check out the local health facilities … will they meet your needs now and when you have a family? If you rely on public transport make sure what is on offer works for you. Next step is to work out if you can afford a home loan and to save your deposit. Generally you will need 20% of the purchase price as the deposit plus legal costs. If you don’t have the full 20% deposit there are options available with Lenders Mortgage Insurance. Once you have decided on where you want to live and have your deposit, it’s time to get a finance pre-approval so you have some bargaining power when negotiating your purchase.

Then you should contact a conveyancing firm or solicitor before you start your search. It will cost you nothing to call and ask some questions on conveyancing. Before signing any purchase contract have your conveyancing firm or solicitor look over it. We suggest you never sign a purchase contract without legal eyes looking over it to ensure you are protected. You may be entitled to the Great Start Grant which is a Queensland Government initiative to help first home owners to get their new first home sooner. You’ll get $15,000 towards buying or building your new house, unit or townhouse (valued at less than $750,000). You can even buy off the plan or choose to build yourself. It’s a great opportunity to buy or build a new home, to get exactly what you want and need in a home for yourself and your family that may follow. Spend a minute or so on the phone with us, we can tell you what you can afford and answer all your questions about home loans.
