Hi Everyone... As you will see by the four pages of ph photos from Australia Day in this week’s edition, we were kept busy across the area. However my absolute favourite thing each year is watching the Citizenship Ceremony take place in the Maleny Showgrounds. It is really heart-warming for me to see first-hand how pleased those taking the pledge are, and how much they all enjoy the experience. Another highlight of the event is the enthusiasm with which the Maleny Singers perform for the audience, it is great to be able to proudly sing along with the national anthem and know that their beautiful voices will drown out mine! Finally, I also love to scan the list of those being acknowledged on the formal ‘Australia Day Honours List’. This year I was very pleased to see two of our dedicated community members receiving an Order of Australia. Denis Hare of Glass House Mountains was recognised for his service to veterans and their families and Lenore Burton from Maleny was recognised for her service to youth. Denis is an active member of our Glasshouse Country RSL Sub-branch and Lenore has been a driving force behind the local fundraising work of Friends of Ebenezer Australia which supports orphans in Zambia. Hopefully GC&M News will be able to catch up with them both during the week and will bring you their response to the Regards, awards in the next edition.
