Hi Everyone

N

ot sure if I should be talking about time again this week, after my effort last week of saying we are now entering Spring? (Thanks Lynda for politely pointing out my mistake) I have no idea where I was going with that.

However, this week I have triple checked and now announce we are on a serious countdown to the Maleny Show with only 11 weeks to go until ‘Showtime’.

So hopefully by now those of you that love to enter your farm produce, cut flowers, photography, painting, pot plants or one of the many other categories, you have your planning well underway.

For those of you that have entertained the thought of entering something, head out and pick up a stylish new Competitor’s Schedule. These are available in each of the IGAs throughout Maleny and Glasshouse Country, and also at Maleny Newsagents and other selected outlets, so get organised!

The theme for the show this year is Renew, Recycle and Reuse, so I am now busy thinking about how I might incorporate that into my entry in the decorated gum boot competition.

Local News Meet author Kim McCosker at Landsborough IGA If you enjoyed the ‘4 Ingredients’ cookbook series then you won’t want to miss meeting author Kim McCosker when she visits IGA Landsborough on Friday, March 18.

From 10.00am Kim will be sharing simple yet delicious food and recipe ideas with locals.

The visit to the store is part of the collaboration that IGA and ‘4 Ingredients’ have formed to simplify life in the kitchen.

The recipe ideas featured on leaflets in store and on the IGA website continue with the popular ‘4 Ingredients’ basis.

The idea behind the collaboration is to be able to extend a helping hand to busy people, parents, and those on a budget, by offering suggestions and in turn inspiration at the end of a long day.

While you are instore picking up your groceries, you can also grab a recipe card, which means you know exactly what ingredients you need and you can make sure you have them before leaving the store.

Creativity on the world stage The global voice of the library and information profession has awarded one of the top prizes in its international marketing award to the Sunshine Coast Library Service for its creative ‘pop up’ library campaign.

Council’s Community Services Director Coralie Nichols said Sunshine Coast Libraries secured the third prize at the 2016 International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) BibLibre International Marketing Award thanks to the campaign which provided a fun way to engage with new audiences.

“The Award honours organisations that have implemented creative, results-oriented marketing projects or campaigns that promote the library and information services industry,” Ms Nichols said.

“The ‘pop up’ marketing campaign was created to connect with the community aged between 40 and 55 to let them know about the free access to the diverse online eLibrary resources any time of the day.

“This campaign saw Sunshine Coast Libraries ‘popping up’ at major events on the Coast interacting with people outside of the traditional library environment.

“There were elements of surprise, intrigue and fun included at each of the six ‘pop ups’ delivered on a very lean budget.

“Creative costumes, taglines and key messages were crafted to match each event such as the ‘Libraries Colour my Life’ theme used at the Swisse Color Run.

Hinterland family support on hand By Sonia Clark

Long term Hinterland community worker, Holly Aston, has recently started a new job that offers family support to Hinterland residents. Holly will be working with families across the Hinterland and will be mainly based at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre.

Holly started her new position in mid-January. This follows on from her work in Beerwah with BADYACC and previously as a local community development worker with the Hinterland Community Development Association.

The new role will be assisting those in a parenting role with children up to 18 years of age. Holly will support those who may have complex family challenges or who require additional parenting support.

She will offer home visiting services and case management support - for example navigating government agencies, linking in with other support networks and assisting with community and school liaison.

Currently this is a funded position for an initial period of six months covering the broader Hinterland area. This new position is a part of an established family support program that runs out of the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, and Holly will be working closely with parenting educator Wendy McManus.

With the aim to improve children’s development and wellbeing, as well as supporting the capacities of those in a parenting role, Holly is looking forward to providing support for positive early intervention and outcomes.

Outspoken Maleny recently hosted one of their most highly anticipated literary events in the history of the festival with a conversation with one of the world’s most popular authors; Alexander McCall Smith.

The capacity event was sold out and Alexander ‘Sandy’ McCall Smith proved to be a highly entertaining conversationalist. With a discussion filled with amusing stories and witty anecdotes, Alexander had the audience in gales of laughter with his hilarious observations and general conviviality.

Over 430 people packed the Maleny State School Hall to enjoy listening to the renowned Scottish author chat about numerous topics including his long running ‘Scotland Street’ series, expectations of the dourness of Scottish writers and his current works including the collection of short stories titled ‘Chance Developments - Unexpected Love Stories’.

The event also featured a conversation with emerging author, Cass Moriarty. Cass had been shortlisted for the Queensland Literary Award with her novel ‘The Promise Seed’, and the author and mother of six gave some interesting insights into her creative journey.

In a wonderful coup for Outspoken organiser Steven Lang, Alexander (who is in Australia for the Adelaide Writer’s Week) agreed to fly up exclusively for the event and was generously and appreciatively received by the Hinterland community.

As well as adult fiction he has released academic works and over 30 books for children - he is truly a talented and prolific writer. Many of his releases have been international best sellers and his works have been translated into over 40 languages - for example ‘The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency’ series has sold over 20 million copies.

It was obvious from the crowd that this was a very special event and it was wonderful that Maleny could host a world renowned author of such a high calibre.

Study examines paramedic care of childbirth A Landsborough local and University of the Sunshine Coast academic who has been a midwife for five years and paramedic / nurse for 22 years is researching the experiences of Queensland women who required an ambulance at the time of giving birth to their babies.

Lecturer Belinda Flanagan, who coordinates USC’s popular Bachelor of Paramedic Science, has analysed more than 5,700 unidentified patient records provided by the Queensland Ambulance Service for her PhD research.

She is now interviewing mothers who birthed their babies in paramedic care or just prior to an ambulance arriving.

“I want to provide information that will inform paramedic guidelines, enhance elements of paramedic curriculum design and enhance in-service education delivered to existing paramedics, both nationally and internationally,” Ms Flanagan said.

“As a midwife, I understand the complexity of some of these cases and I appreciate both the physical and emotional needs of both the mother and baby,” she said. “I want this research to positively influence paramedic practice and patient outcomes.”

“I’m exploring the needs of labouring and birthing women in paramedic care and will try to identify the factors relating to the need for paramedic attendance and what factors complicate paramedic clinical management,” she said.

Belinda recently collaborated with the QAS to review existing obstetric guidelines and produce online education packages sent to more than 2,500 ambulance officers across the state in December.

Mooloolah Waterwatch and Landcare Inc. (MRWL) has burst back on the scene alive and well, after a major shakeup of the organisation at the end of 2015.

We would like to firstly acknowledge the valuable contributions made to the environment by our former Environment Manager Jan Kesby, who resigned in September. We wish Jan well as she continues to care for the environment with her new business.

Sharon Evans has been employed as an assistant to the committee as they work through reviewing and updating processes and procedures to improve operations in all areas.

The majority of the work done at the native plant nursery, on Steve Irwin Way (near the Mooloolah turnoff) is done by volunteers. These dedicated people collect and, propagate seed and pot them into nursery tubes for sale.

The MRWL nursery is stocked with thousands of healthy native plants ranging from tube stock to 50 cm pots and is open to the public Monday to Wednesday 8.00am – 4.00pm.

A list of plants available is on our website www.mooloolahwaterwatchandlandcare.org We are also investigating a program to protect and enhance valuable Lowland (river) Rainforest, including a plan to create a Cat’s Claw Creeper and Madeira Vine biocontrol control breeding facility at the nursery.

With assistance from the Sunshine Coast Council, MRWL holds a range of workshops throughout the year. In April there are two planned – ‘All things Caterpillars’ on April 2 and ‘Healthy Land, Healthy Horses’ on April 17. Details are available on our website.

A new initiative for 2016 is the 'Members for Members group' which meets on the second Saturday of each month to visit each other’s properties where they share knowledge, ideas, hopes and dreams.

On April 13, at 2.00pm, they will be meeting at a property in Landsborough where amongst other things you can learn about bees.

As a not-for-profit organisation, the vision of the new management of MRWL is to be transparent

The majority of our funding is through grants from government sources and this brings with it the obligation for high levels of accountability.

If you would like to be part of the exciting future at MRWL, there will be a General Meeting for members at the Mooloolah Hall on Saturday, March 19 at 2.30pm.

The Management Committee will update the members on the changes to date and present an Interim MRWL Strategic Plan for their endorsement.

We welcome volunteers. If you have some time during the week and would like to become part of a group of like minded people who care about our environment and can spare anything from an hour, up to three days a week, you will be able to find something that you really enjoy at the nursery.

It can be inside or out, admin or weeding, seed collecting or seed propagation. Come and put your skills to work or learn some new ones.

Maleny Show goes glossy

You may have noticed that this year’s Maleny Show Program is available around town, and if you have already picked up your copy you will have seen that they have had a major overhaul in their design and layout, and they are looking ‘wow’.

This funky / groovy new styling isn’t just limited to the schedule; the show’s website and Facebook page have also undergone significant upgrades!

Long-time secretary of the Maleny Show Society, Lois White, said Kristy Hope a graphic designer from Conondale had started managing the show’s Facebook page last year, and they had seen some great results with the number of followers and likes.

“Kristy then suggested that the Show Society’s website was looking a bit tired and could do with improving the look and functionality,” Lois said.

“Through Kristy’s company KHope Designs, she came up with a proposal for the show society to consider, which involved a new look for the website, and the show schedule which included the concept of a flip book to highlight the entertainment side of the show separately to the competitors sections.

“One of our goals for the new website was to make it simple and easy to use, which Kristy has definitely done, with the response to doing things on-line such as paying memberships, and search events being really positive.

“As many of our show society members have never used a website before, the feedback from them has been really encouraging.

“When the show executive committee started to workshop strategic and operational planning late last year, one thing we wanted to do better was to make better use of technological advances.

“We think that our Facebook and website are two steps in the right direction.

“Many thanks to Kristy Hope, for her outstanding contribution to the Maleny show society and her local community,” she said.

Thank you to those members and guests who attended our last meeting. It was great to see an increase in numbers. A representative from Andrew Powell’s office gave a presentation on the local small business awards Andrew is initiating, and we also heard from the three candidates that had nominated at that time for Division 1 Sunshine Coast Council.

It was interesting to note that the three candidates had similar but not identical platforms and that they had all received similar messages about the concerns and needs of the community. The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce wishes all candidates the best of luck and will be happy to work closely with whoever is elected. Elections provide us with an opportunity to think about what we want our community to look like and what is important to us and who we believe is the best fit for the job to fit the criteria select. I believe this is also a great time for us as members of the community to think about how we can make a difference directly and not just leave it up to the elected representatives.

It is only a few short months before the Chamber AGM and I would call on people to seriously consider putting their hands up for any of the positions that will become vacant at that meeting. We currently have a small but dynamic executive who put in a lot of hours behind the scenes to make things happen, however it would be so much better, and easier, if we had more members involved to share the load. If you are unable to fill an executive position but would still like to have some input about how the Chamber is run and the projects it gets involved with, we would love to hear from you. And you don’t have to wait until the AGM to get involved.

Why your Government is charging you 82% more for electricity?

by Ian Hall, from All Energy HQ In a report from a Government Authority, the Queensland Productivity Commission is reviewing electricity prices.

It reports “… network investment costs have … accounted for 82% of the 87% price rise in Queensland’s electricity prices.”

And get this!

The same report says “… some of the network investments have not been necessary.”

The networks (a combined Government operation) get a set and agreed return on investment. This is usually quite profitable to the networks.

Guess what? – the little Aussie battlers have these “not necessary expenditures” just added to their electricity bill (82% of 87%) as price rises in the last several years – and there’s much more to come.

What can you do (that is legal)?

1. Remember these details at State Government election time.

2. Get a solar system – you certainly will eventually. So act now why solar is so economical.

3. Add additional panels to your existing system … stop, please don’t tell me you can’t. Some people can’t but most people can. It is legal and … read this … it is recommended by inverter manufacturers (yes – recommended) to “oversize your inverter.” You need to speak to us about it. Come in with your electricity bill and details of your existing solar system.

4. Add batteries and get free night time electricity.

5. Add solar and batteries and tell the monopoly electricity suppliers to “tick off.”

Maleny In Maleny I see a community torn by the issue of open space, deflecting attention from equally important others: facilities for the creative arts, improved public transport, and affordable housing. The reason for this is the widely unpopular leasing of Precinct land for expensive minority sports. Another is buffer land for the frail Mary Cairncross wildlife reserve. Will it be forested to protect wildlife? Or does Jenny McKay have something else in mind.

Mooloolah Valley In the Mooloolah Valley a big issue is basic services – bus runs, bus shelters, and public toilets. Councils elsewhere apply Minimum Service Standards to ensure that small communities have the services and amenities they need. This Council seems never to have heard of them.

In both communities I see a small-to-medium business economy based on farming and food, the creative arts and innovation, environmental services, and weddings and hospitality, supported by tourists and day-trippers seeking nature, culture, heritage, dining and on-farm experiences. Yet this Council’s focus is Big Infrastructure, Big Events, Big Sports. Minimum service standards, community open space, heritage protection, excellence in design, environmental best practice, creative innovation – all are seen as distractions to the main game. Development. Yet the evidence is that these ‘distractions’ actually encourage wise development. They ARE the main game! None of these issues will be resolved while we have a Council that talks mainly to vested interests. I will always be open to clever ideas from organised groups and stakeholders, including infrastructure. But I will also heed the views of public forums and representative local associations, and insist that projects and policies are scrutinised by Council committee.

This is the tradition of good government in Australia. It’s called democracy.

Maleny The two words I keep hearing in Maleny are ‘inappropriate development’. This is a major issue impacting all areas in our Hinterland division, and it is about finding the best way to balance the natural and built environment with our tourism, farming and other niche and home based industries.

We need to retain the current ‘look’ of our towns while still allowing for development that enhances them for both locals and tourists. Locals need to have input and ownership of decisions that affect their community, and, at the moment, they feel their voice is not being heard. Inappropriate development has many flow-on effects including overcrowding, lack of transport and lack of parking. Council should work with developers to ensure there is a whole community benefit to each development, including provision for adequate parking, and alternate modes of transport including footpaths.

Mooloolah Valley In the Mooloolah Valley lack of services is a big concern. One third of your rates are allocated to roads and bridges, however this money is not being returned equitably. In the hinterland, we have almost 600 kilometres of unsealed roads, and, according to the Council’s own plan, only 45kms of that will be sealed in the next 20 years. At this rate, it will take over 200 years to get all our roads sealed! Bus stops, footpaths, kerbing and channelling are desperately needed, along with regular maintenance of our parks and recreation areas. If elected, I will advocate for a minimum service delivery standard for our small town infrastructure.

I will also advocate for the reintroduction of a Committee structure into the Sunshine Coast Council and enable public discussion and debate of issues before recommendations are made to a full Council meeting.

Issues for Mooloolah Valley and Maleny.

1. I see the short comings of a Supa Council being important. Namely representation. Councillors have tried but 20,000 voters are too much for any one person. I propose something new and fresh. I will use a team of eight local resident representatives from each community within Division 5.

The locally chosen Community reps will report to me with concise dot point submissions. This will bring representation back close to the communities and the residents. Ron Green proposes the same, 10 Divisional reps team, to work alongside himself to second safety check Councillors.

2. I support more parking. I am opposed to parking meters. Councils were created to collect money from within the regions. To be used for the building of roads in rural areas. The bloated price given to seal gravel roads – $1.4 million per kilometre – means that given the paltry $3 million per year Council have allocated for 600km of unsealed roads it will take a 300 year plan to complete. Council has lost sight. Council needs to get back to basics. Road work creates jobs. Local employment and local to the area contractors must be preferred so that Council does not only action road work – Council returns rate money back to the struggling communities from where it was taken.

My motto to Council executive – if you fail to represent the residents of this region and communities within - We will come to take your job!

I have no association with, nor do I subscribe to political parties, nor am I assisted by a political party.

Maleny Parking and Public Transport. I have taken the issue seriously. I have had dozens of conversations with locals and have listened and followed up on all. I have investigated at least two options to increase the parking, specifically around the business centre. The preferred option at this point, is council’s own carpark in Willow Lane and the opportunity to put in a second story. This work would be carried out in conjunction with the neighbouring properties as it is a shared facility. Public Transport – as ecotourism opportunities grow, so does the need for parking and transport solutions.

Council has embarked on a Transport Study for the region. This is not a paid parking exercise, but an opportunity for the hinterland to have a say in the matter of public transport and parking solutions. Chamber of Commerce’s representing small business, together with the community, will engage in seeking solutions, as the region is faced with these challenges into the next decade. Parking shortages, limited funds and lack of public transport should be high on the agenda of all governments.

Mooloolah Skate Park. Young Mooloolah residents have been proactive and have collected 100’s of signatures seeking this facility in their neighbourhood.

Together with the Mooloolah Community Centre I have jumped on-board in support of their vision. I am strongly lobbying Queensland Rail, to make available a small piece of reserve rail corridor for which this facility can be located; and which has already been endorsed by the community. Sadly the only public areas currently available to them, impact on shoppers, the Community Centre and road gutters – I am sure you will agree that they deserve their own little piece of Mooloolah.

Councils were created to collect money from within the regions, to be used for the building of roads in rural areas. The bloated price given to seal gravel roads – $1.4 million per kilometre – means that given the paltry $3 million per year Council have allocated for 600km of unsealed roads it will take a 300 year plan to complete. Council has lost sight. Council needs to get back to basics.

Road work creates jobs. Local employment and local to the area contractors must be preferred so that Council does not only action road work – Council returns rate money back to the struggling communities from where it was taken.

Our motto to Council executive … if you fail to represent the residents of this region and communities within – we will come to take your job!

I love our Sunshine Coast. I want to ensure we retain the natural beauty of our region but also do everything we can to shape a stronger, more positive future for our residents.

I will deliver a further $30 million for sport and community facilities and will support our communities to promote and celebrate their local heritage, which is an important part of the fabric of many Hinterland towns and locations.

Preserving the region’s environmental assets is one of my highest priorities.

I will push hard for enduring protection of the inter-urban break between the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay, increase our conservation lands by a further 10% and expand our award winning environmental programs, like Land for Wildlife.

Girl Guides provides a unique girl only space. International research has shown that boys and girls learn very differently. Guides are encouraged by leaders and peers to explore their personal boundaries, in a safe and secure atmosphere.

By this, Guides learn they can do anything.

Guide Leaders consistently report a special feeling about Guide meetings.

It’s an energy the girls generate because they want to be there, where they have a direct say in what they do and learn to plan, action, and evaluate their activities.

They can discover what kind of person, and girl, they are. Guides don’t ‘dumb down’ nor step back from physical challenges for fear that boys might not approve.

Come along and try it out it's free for the first two weeks.

On Saturday, February 27, Members from Maleny, Glass House Mountains and Belli Park Rural Fire Service were presented the Queensland Fire and Rescue Diligent and Ethical Service Medal at Caloundra Rural Area Office.

Presentations were made to Jared Ashcroft of Maleny Rural Fire Brigade (10 plus years’ service), Philip Short Belli Park Rural Fire Brigade (11 years' of service), Steve Rook (17 years’ service) and Ilia Starkovsky from Glass House Mountains Rural Fire brigade.

Steve Rook received the medal on behalf of Ilia and will present it at Glass House Mountains Group.

A murder is announced

Maleny Players have undertaken auditions over the weekend for their upcoming production, Leslie Darbon’s adaptation of Agatha’s Christie’s novel, ‘A Murder is Announced’.

Set in the Victorian mansion of Miss Letitia Blacklock, the slaying takes place following an announcement of its time and place in a newspaper advertisement. The play is a typical Agatha Christie thriller, set in a 1950s rural English village and featuring your typical English people of the genteel middle class.

The crime is subsequently executed at the home of Miss Letitia Blacklock.

Miss Marple, Agatha Christie's super sleuth, is on the case. There will be six performances of the classic Christie whodunit at The Playhouse in the Maleny Showgrounds over the weekends of May 13-15 and 20-22.

Back to the good ol’ days Contributed by Pauline Clarke Glass House Country View Club This month’s outing on Wednesday, March 2, was to the Caloundra Events Centre for the first show in the Sunshine Melodies Concert Series.

The show featured the legendary Australian recording artist, Lonnie Lee, who with eight national number one hits to his credit and a stage presence spanning 55 years, is still able to wow the audiences. A most enjoyable concert, which took our members back in time to the music of ‘the good old days’.

Our guest speaker at our next monthly lunch meeting at the Glass House Sports Club on Wednesday, March 16 will be Maz Schirman from the Institute for Women.This is one not to be missed as Maz Schirman’s reputation precedes her as an exceptional inspirational speaker. Arrive at 11.00am for an 11.30am start.

The Glass House Country View Club meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month.

The first Wednesday we have outings to places of

interest around the Sunshine Coast and the third Wednesday is our lunch meeting where we have interesting speakers, trading tables, raffles, etc.

We are a very sociable group of ladies; we have great fun, interesting topics, speakers and outings and we enjoy knowing that the money we raise goes to a very worthy cause. New housing planned for Shaws Road A development permit (REC16/0015) to reconfigure a property the corner of Shaws Road and Old Gympie Road, Beerwah into 29 lots was recently lodged with the Sunshine Coast Council.

The impact assessable application seeks approval for the current macadamia nut farm, which is zoned for rural residential development, at 2595 Old Gympie Road to be developed into housing lots of similar size and character as the adjoining rural residential estates.

The 8.47 hectare farm is planned to be cut into the 29 blocks each being greater than 2000sq.m in size. The documents show that the development is planned to be established in two stages – the first constructing 14 lots, and the second being the remaining 15 lots.

Peachester Horticultural Society

Contributed by Patricia Bradford We had our AGM in February and welcome to the new committee. At the general meeting which followed, members commented about problems with unsuitable plants being planted by neighbours close to the boundary fence.

Rob Morris explained that leaves from bamboo make good mulch and the earthworms love it.

Results of the competition bench for January, 1 Coral Beutel, 16 points. Tie for 2nd - Pam Innes and Trish Bradford,14 points. The overall winner of the Irene Owen trophy for 2015 was Cath Howitt - 155 points and Pam Innes came in 2nd with 131 points, congratulations.

Theo Beenders gave an interesting talk about Begonias, we learnt that worldwide there are about 1,795 different varieties. Theo showed us a small selection and the Rex Begonias he had that were very striking.

A few members took advantage to purchase plants for their collections.

Next meeting, will be on Thursday, March 17 from 9.30am and is in the garden of Coral Beutel.

Congratulations to all MF students!

On Sunday, March 6, students from the Matt Fiddes Martial Arts schools across the hinterland came together for their first grading of the year.

From the little three-year-olds through to adults approaching their fifties, every student had a goal they were aiming for. Some, to simply pass their white belt grading; others striving towards their black belts.

While gradings are designed to test students on their fitness, self-defence and sparring techniques, the Matt Fiddes instructors look for even more. Every term, students learn different life skills such as self-control and anger management.

This term, the topic was on stranger danger, dealing with the ‘no, go, yell and tell’ rules on how to escape if a stranger approached you.

Every student has had lots of fun demonstrating all the techniques they have learned over the past 12 weeks.

Gradings are a very special part of the MF

academy. It is not only a time where everyone comes together as one big supportive family, but a place where students show off their indomitable spirit and dedication to training as they strive to accomplish personal goals.

One particular goal that all students aim for is to be nominated for a position on the Leadership or Super Winning Attitude Team (SWAT).

Our Leadership Team is a reward that goes to the students who show massive improvement in their courage, integrity and most importantly indomitable spirit. SWAT is a stepping stone for younger students who show potential in becoming future leaders.

Over a long period of time students need to consistently show ‘Black Belt Attitude’ in the dojo, at school and at home to earn a nomination for SWAT or Leadership. Each grading term positions on these teams are reassessed and they must be re-nominated to keep their place.

The day was a great success. Students and

instructors celebrated everyone taking their next step in the journey to black belt and beyond.

Landsborough Scouts future uncertain On February 22 every year, millions of Scouts around the world gather at local, national and international levels to celebrate Founder’s Day (the birthday of Lord Baden-Powell (1857-1941) the pioneer of Scouting).

This year, as part of this tradition, groups from Landsborough, Caloundra, Kawana and Bracken Ridge camped out at the Rocky Creek Scout Camp on February 20 and participated in many fun activities.

Sadly for the Landsborough Scouts this could be the last time they will have this opportunity, or any Scouting opportunity, as they are in dire need of finding a new Leader.

Landsborough Scout Chairman, Luke Gregson said if they are not able to find someone who is willing to take on this role, the scout section of the group will have to close.

“This will be very unfortunate,” he said.

“As I’m sure most locals are aware, scouting makes a direct and positive impact on the community by teaching positive values and leadership skills to youth.”

Every year, Scouts and their Leaders contribute thousands of volunteer hours to their local communities.

They share time with the aged in the local community, help with Clean Up Australia Day, Harmony Day and Earth Hour, these are just a

few examples of the commitment Scouts make to their communities.

At Landsborough, Leaders are encouraged to explore their creativity and work together while developing their programs and leading their youth.

A Leader can gain formal leadership qualifications, develop programs, work with like-minded individuals, and teach young people life lessons through offering them the experiences of a lifetime.

It’s a very rewarding position that is very much supported by the Scouting Queensland organisation, the local community, and the Landsborough Scouting Committee.

A Blue card is a necessity for scouting and the scouts will pay for any applications needed.

Leaders need to attend training over two weekends which will be paid for by the scout group also.

Landsborough Hall update Contributed by Linda Morse Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall Assoc Inc. recently hosted its 2016 AGM with all but one of the previous 2015 committee members being re-elected unopposed.

Our Vice President, Alf Unwin declined to nominate. Alf has served the Hall for a very long time, as president, vice president and executive committee member.

The committee would like to thank Alf for his dedication and commitment to the hall over the years. He has been our go-to person for repairs, our own Mr Fix It and his knowledge about the Hall and its history has been a great asset. His insight and friendship will be missed.

Congratulations to the 2016 Committee who are Shirley Rhule President, Bernie Cole Vice President, Peter Pollock Secretary, Linda Morse Treasurer and Booking Officer and we welcome a new member to the group, Karen Westaway.

We had hoped for a bigger community representation at the AGM. Perhaps you might consider joining us when we meet on the first Thursday of each month at 7.00pm?

Landslips are inherent to the Maleny-Mapleton plateau, particularly on the escarpments (edges). Landslips are the result of a natural landscape process, erosion, being acted on by a natural force, gravity. Ground water flows laterally through porous basalt out into the loose material on the sides of plateau, emerging as springs.

Deep rooted trees hold soil together and help dry soil out through transpiration; their removal increases the likelihood of landslip. Heavy rainfall increases groundwater pressure and the likelihood of landslip occurrence. Climate change threatens more high rainfall episodes, increasing the risk on landslip-prone sites.

Besides restricting land use options, landslips expose soil, increasing erosion risks and weed invasion. Waterways can be degraded through increased sedimentation; property management costs increase through losses and increased maintenance of roads, fences and pasture.

How should you deal with landslips on your property? Firstly, seek advice from neighbours, council, Barung Landcare or Lake Baroon Catchment Care Group. Avoid clearing vegetation without a clear plan for revegetation, particularly in high risk areas such as slopes. Divert water flow from the top of existing slips to decrease lubrication then plant fast growing, deep rooted trees across the top and down the sides, e.g. eucalyptus species, hoop pine.

Accept that much of this landscape is naturally prone to landslip.

Identify high risk areas – choose appropriate land uses and manage them accordingly. Work with nature – don’t try and compete!

School News Community generosity on display

Woolworths stores across Queensland and Northern New South Wales are calling on the generosity of local shoppers to raise more than $600,000 for the Children’s Hospital Foundation in the Easter Wall Token campaign.

The annual Easter Wall Token campaign has become Woolworths’ biggest fundraising activity for the Children’s Hospital Foundation, contributing to more than $40 million raised over 30 years for clinical and medical research, state-of-the-art medical equipment, facilities and patient support.

Local shoppers can expect to see familiar faces behind the Woolworths checkout throughout March appearing in their local store to rally support for the cause.

Glasshouse Christian College’s Head of Senior David Heyworth and students have already thrown their support behind the campaign.

“Glasshouse Christian College is thrilled to be supporting the Children’s Hospital Foundation Easter Wall Token campaign,” Mr Heyworth said.

“The funds raised are crucial to helping sick kids get back on their feet.”

Easter Wall Tokens are on sale for $2.00 at all Woolworths stores until April 6, with shoppers encouraged to display theirs in store as a silent symbol of support to the many local families struggling with a sick child in hospital this Easter.

Learning about libraries starts early

Contributed by Sam Pienaar The Beerwah Library came to visit us at Bella Grace Early Learning Centre in Beerwah recently. We had a great morning singing songs and reading books with Nicola and Karen from the library.

Lots of children brought in their library cards to show everyone and we learnt about all the great things we could borrow from the library.

Peachester State School seniors have got the year off to a flying start. This group of energetic, enthusiastic and courteous Year 6 students are excellent role models for the whole school and we are proud so say they are our leaders.

Our school captains, Jessie Poole, Kobe Brady and house captains Lucy Sanders, Georgia McIntyre, Ryan Evans-Hammill and Shayla Jurss were recently presented with their badges on parade, followed by a morning tea with parents and members of the community. What a great start to the year.

You Said It Great result

My faith in humanity has been restored, thanks to your printing my letter. Beerwah police found my bike outside the police station and I now have it back. Many thanks to the person who returned it! Not only that, a kind couple from Glasshouse offered me the loan of their bike until mine was found, and another lady rang and said she had one I could use also! Thanks to all those good people and the police.

While this story had a happy ending – it kind of reinforces why the local police remind us to keep our property secure so that some charming individual doesn’t just wander by and see our goodies as an easy target.

Home of non-party politics

Local government on the Sunshine Coast has always been the home of non-party politics and served us well over many decades. Local government members have to be able to work with state and federal members of all party persuasions.

The Greens Party is currently bringing party politics into our local government, and I can see no long term benefit for the Sunshine Coast.

The Greens have already advised us that their masters in Canberra have dictated that they will vote for total legalisation of all illicit drugs.

The Greens have long led the ‘anti-everything’ push on the Sunshine Coast.

The Greens have continually opposed job creation projects such as the Montville zip line and the Glenview water park. The hypocrisy of the Greens has shown through over the years where they will continually oppose any job creation project, but will whole heartedly support an increase in non-

The Peacocks have a voice

I live in Clearview Drive and have done so for the last 10 years. I have brought up my two boys in this magical location and my boys have also grown up with the beautiful Peacocks that have made their home here in our estate. I have been biting my tongue for long enough on this issue and I would like to put my 2 cents worth in... as others have been doing, complaining to council about this very issue.

Sure, these birds poop on my patio. I clean it and move on. Sure, sometimes I am woken up with Peacock 'chatter', it reminds me that I live on acreage. Sure, I have to slow down on Clearview Drive if they're crossing, something most residents find hard to do, period.

I had a chance to speak to the Sunshine Coast Council representative regarding this issue when he pulled up to 'collect' two birds that had been 'captured' in a trap on a property opposite my residence. I asked him about the uncollected voices that are pro Peacock and his response was that he 'door knocked' as many residents as he could in the street, including mine (but I was at work). How many other pro Peacock people in Clearview Drive have also not had their say?

Please, if you feel as passionate as me and firmly believe that these guys have as much right to stay here as you and I, please 'complain' to council as these 'others' have done to voice your stance.

I'm not even going to start on the other issue of irresponsible dog owners and what council should or isn't doing about this bigger issue! Peacocks aren't aggressive....

Airport bus for Hinterland

In January, I wrote a letter to Con-X-ion regarding their lack of services for people in the Hinterland to and from the Brisbane and Sunshine Coast airports, and pointed out the growth of Beerwah and surrounds.

Up to now, people have had to find their own way to Aussie World in order to catch a shuttle to Brisbane Airport. And when in 2014 Col’s Shuttle and Sunair merged and were sold to the new owners Con-X-ion, services to the Sunshine Coast Airport ceased altogether.

I have just received an email from Kelly Cattanach, the Sales and Marketing Manager of Con-X-ion, to say they have just finalised service areas for the Hinterland.

From the 1st of March Con-X-ion will be running nine services daily from Brisbane Airport to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Stops include Beerwah Hotel, Landsborough BP, Coles Express Service Station on Bruce Highway, Glass House Mountains (Southbound), Bus stop 891 on Landsborough/Maleny Road and the Montville Visitor Information Centre.

The cost is $49.00 per person, reduced to $44.00 per person for two or more persons travelling to the same address.

Unfortunately at this stage they will not be offering services to the Sunshine Coast Airport as the turnaround time is too tight. They do however offer private transfers at the rate of $120.00 for a seven seat IMAX. Even so, this is fantastic news. Let’s hope local travellers make good use of the service.

Genuine consultation

NBN/Aurecon has just organised two sessions in our area, Maleny and Conondale, on their next microwave tower proposals. One is to be at Sinclair Lane, Maleny and one at Conondale Township.

We suspect another will be coming soon on a site at Burgess Avenue, Maleny. As the then NBN Community Affairs Manager Ryan Williams is quoted as saying in May 2015 in local papers, ‘the information session is to engage the community in genuine consultation’.

So how do they do ‘genuine’ consultation? If you went to those 'meetings' you would notice that the contract for a tower has already been taken by a landholder and the site chosen. What does consultation do? Well nothing here really as once a site is chosen it’s unlikely to change.

You can't 'consult ' when you have no process by which to discuss with NBN moving or changing a pre-chosen site. All you can do is look at display photos; in particular NBN's famous Before and After photo shots.

NBN/Aurecon has used this technique of planning a site then notifying residents via newspaper adverts with no clear identification of the site.

They now run adverts with no address of where a tower is proposed. Who comes when there is no clue as to where it is? Well often, very few.

One day a local resident will look out their kitchen window (as has already happened in Palmwoods when the first tower went up) and say - 'Where did that tower come from, I knew nothing about it!.’ This was reported at a Maleny meeting in 2014. That's the real end result of NBN's 'community consultation'.

Grateful customer

There are some generous and honest people in this area. Whilst having a coffee at Vianta with my son on Monday, February 29, I noticed in the book case a book ‘The World of Michelangelo’.

I once had the full collection of this series from Time-Life Library of Art until the book on Michelangelo was stolen.

I explained this to the owner of Vianta and I asked him if he would consider selling it to me so that my collection was complete again. With a big smile he said to me "if it means that much to you, please take it." What a kind gesture. I am very grateful to him.

Then, we went to Aldi where somewhere I lost my glasses. I did a search of the store and could not find them so asked the staff member on the register if she would take my name and phone number. Having arrived home and unloading the car, the phone rang and it was this staff member saying that a lady had found my glasses in the car park. To both you ladies I say a big thank you.

It started out not to be my day but ended up that I was so thankful for living in an area where people consider others.

Could we, who walk our dogs through the new development off Bilenda Close daily, ask the person who walks their large dog to please clean up after it, as it spoils the walk for the remainder of us who clean up after our pets. No to party politics

I agree with Dave Ritson, Beerwah candidate for Division 1. We do not want party politics at local councils.

Dave has been a local for the last 12 years, has a farming background, and has put a lot into the local community. In my experiences country folk, like Dave, have common sense, and are able to think outside the square.

Dave would make an excellent councilor for Division 1, as being a local, he knows the problems that need to be fixed in Division 1, and has its future at heart.

Global Warming / Climate Change Alarmists

I would like to thank Neil Lovett, Cliff Schnick and Peter Gawith for sharing their views about Climate Change, in GC&M News, February 17 issue.

I agree with Cliff when he says, ‘Thank Goodness we live in a society that engages in hearing all opinions'. If nothing else, we may all learn something from each other.

However, I worry about the source of the so called scientific evidence all of these readers refer to, so I would like to ask them a few simple questions.

1. What percentage of the atmosphere do you think is CO2?

2. Have you ever seen the percentage given in any media report?

3. What percentage of the CO2 is man-made?

4. What percentage of the man-made CO2 does Australia produce?

5. Is CO2 a pollutant?

6. Have you ever seen any evidence that CO2 causes a greenhouse effect?

Until you can answer these questions with any degree of accuracy, you really don't have the information you need to be making these assumptions.

Do you want to talk about REAL science, and not the rantings of the doomsday brigade, who's so called scientific evidence is altered to reflect what they want it to?

And to answer the question Peter Gawith asked, ‘What is behind this wrongness?’ It's very simple Peter, money and greed, from people who will gain millions of dollars from perpetuating this Climate Change misnomer as you call it.

I would direct you to the findings of a real scientist, like Gregg Thompson, Climate Researcher, Astronomer, Environmentalist, Author of two Science books and Science Magazine articles, Business Manager and director of three companies, etc etc.

And just to put Cliff Schnick in the picture, one Volcano eruption puts more carbon (CO2) back in the atmosphere in one day, than all of you Climate Change Alarmists have collectively managed to reduce with all your green save the planet recycling efforts in the last 30 years, and

there are dozens of Volcanos erupting around the planet every day, so your efforts to reduce this horrible element called carbon is futile, and that is not a conspiracy theory Cliff, that is fact.

For the record, I can provide the answers to the above questions, they come from a real scientist, are not easily refutable, I would be happy so supply them to GC&M news to forward on for those that are interested.

Real understanding

After attending a ‘Meet the Candidates’ event recently it occurred to me that, of the three candidates for Division One who were present, only the sitting member (Rick Baberowski) showed an understanding of how local government works and had a comprehension of the challenges our district faces.

Of course being in the job for a term, he has the benefit of experience.

The other candidates, while well meaning, came across as being able to identify some of the issues, but did not provide ideas or strategies for how they could be resolved.

While respecting that all candidates nominating have energy and some form of expertise to contribute to our local council, we need to continue with someone who understands how to make the levers of local government work.

Living in the 1860s

Home mortgage, stamp duty, capital gains tax, GST, return on investment are common concerns related to real estate purchases in 2016. Over 150 years ago, potential home owners were faced with very different concerns.

At the outset, the problems confronting the early pioneers might have been – are the aboriginals friendly; are there stands of valuable timber that could be converted into cash or is there suitable accessible timber available for building a home? Is fresh water close at hand?

Expectations were entirely different. A worker’s cottage in the mid to late 1800s was typically two-roomed, the unlined roof was made of timber shingles and the walls made of timber slabs split from a log, using a maul and wedge, and trimmed with an adze. The timber slabs for the walls were arranged side by side to form a structure of great strength but allowed light and rain through the cracks.

The floors were hard-packed earth and the windows merely openings covered by hessian at night when the weather was fine. In cold or wet weather, they were sealed by a solid wooden shutter suspended from above by broad strips of greenhide acting as hinges.

A stout wooden door was secured by a wooden bar.

No toilet, bathroom or laundry was located inside the house. Unwelcome visitors included snakes, goannas and centipedes! The kitchen was usually detached or in a separate little shed. Cooking was done over an open fire. In the early days the selectors would not have the benefit of a wood burning stove.

Prior to their settling in the Glasshouse Mountains, the Grigor family could well have experienced these living conditions when timber-getting in the Mooloolah area. Building tools (maul, wedge and adze) are part of the Bankfoot House collection. The house and the collection are available for viewing on the last Sunday of the month (except for March as it is Easter Sunday).

Contributed by Joyce Boody (nee Tagg) Recently I spent several weeks on the Sunshine Coast where I did a lot of reminiscing and catching up with old (very old) friends and family. Probably the highlight was a Maurer Tagg cousins’ reunion at the Beerwah Hotel.

For us it was a great day, just hearing each other’s stories and reminiscing.

One could never have imagined how Beerwah has grown.I had left Beerwah some 60 years earlier and had had little contact with our cousins apart from helping Michael research our Family Tree.

I am sure some of your readers would remember Barry Maurer and Toby Tagg as both were bakers when our main street consisted of little more than butcher, baker and Whitmey's (later Wimberley's) general store.

Barry did his apprenticeship with Nev Reiss and Toby (Athol) with John Errington. Toby and Barry have kept in contact, and it was their idea that prompted the reunion. Apart from me, the families have not strayed far from the paradise of the Sunshine Coast.

Our fathers were involved in the timber industry. I worked for Wimberleys, Oriel was employed at Walton's garage, and John did his building apprenticeship with Les Shuttlewood.

I recall meeting Diane, Michael's wife, many years later working at Centaur Nursing Home when mum was in respite. Michael also chose building (cabinet making) and June, whose positive attitude is an inspiration, spent many years working in child care.

Reed Street update

For the next few editions of my monthly column, I will endeavour to provide you with an update on progress with the Reed Street traffic lights – I also post regular updates on Facebook so make sure you check out my page. In preparation for the installation of new lighting, electrical works will commence on Sunday, March 6. These night works will take place overnight between 6.00pm and 6.00am, weather permitting. As you will no doubt have seen, lane closures, traffic controllers, reduced speed limits and road signage will be in place to ensure the safety of motorists and road workers. Please just understand you may experience some delays during these works and although every effort will be made to reduce impacts, residents may experience minor construction noise, lighting, vibration and dust while work is taking place.

Gearing up for the Glass House Small Business Awards I hit the pavements of our business districts during the past fortnight to get the word out about the inaugural Glass House Business Awards. I handed out posters and nomination forms to many of the local business operators in the Glass House area and answered questions about the format of the awards. Nominations have been coming through but of course we still need more! With the recent close of the public comments period for the Federal Referral for the planned Bruce Highway / Caloundra Road interchange, environmental impacts are still at the forefront for the Steve Irwin Way Forest group.

Despite the Department of Transport and Main Road’s (TMR) promises to drastically reduce the size of the project footprint, this has still not been reflected in writing, with the original area of 78.36 ha still standing in the formal application to the Federal Government.

The Save the Steve Irwin Way Forest (SSIWF) group are requesting scrutiny of several issues which appear to be insufficiently addressed by TMR in their Referral (under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999), including the clearing of koala habitat, impacts to Jowarra National Park and the loss of habitat for numerous threatened species including the endangered giant barred frog.

Current environmental laws use offsetting and financial compensation from one government department to another to justify the destruction of native forest, is arguably inappropriate.

Parts of the forest in question are classed as a critically endangered ecological community with 300 – 400 year old trees at stake. In this instance a 15 year time frame is being suggested for offset realisation.

An additional concern is the proposal to allocate the Lower Mooloolah River Environmental Reserve (LMRE Reserve), at the end of Claymore Road, Sippy Downs as a project offset.

The LMRE Reserve was obtained by the Sunshine Coast Council as part of the Palmview Structure Plan. As its purpose was to balance residential developments at Palmview, subsequently allocating it as an offset for the Bruce Highway project will not provide the gain for the environment that TMR are claiming.

Wayne Reid from the SSIWF group says he is suitably unimpressed.

"We can't accept the felling of 300 year old trees, koala habitat, and endangered subtropical lowland rainforest at all, let alone be convinced any offset proposal could truly compensate for that – it would take 300 years," he said.

“But for TMR to nominate an offset area, which already has a commitment from council to be regenerated, is simply a last minute contrivance to try and get what has always been a bad idea accepted by the Federal Environment Department."

By Lea Parkes The Glasshouse Country Chaplaincy Committee held their annual breakfast last Tuesday morning at Beerwah State High School, as their way of thanking the generosity and support of many individuals, businesses, churches, politicians and community groups that assist their fundraising efforts year after year.

The breakfast was made and served by the Beerwah High Hospitality students who did a fabulous job and included choices of a hot breakfast, healthy fruit and yogurts and baked goods.

However the most impressive thing was that the students had to arrive at school by 6.30am!

“Once finalised, the standards will be adopted as a compulsory requirement under the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001 and will apply to all dog breeders in Queensland.

“As with any industry, there are those people that do the right thing and those that don’t.”

RSPCA Qld CEO Mark Townend said RSPCA staff and volunteers were only too well aware of the animal welfare issues associated with puppy farms.

“We’ve been forced to seize animals from conditions that were appalling,” he said.

“It’s purely a money-making exercise and often the dogs bred there suffer from genetic conditions that will cost future owners thousands of dollars in veterinary bills.

“We wholly support this initiative. It is legislation that we believe will make it a lot easier to control irresponsible and illegal breeding.”

Minister Donaldson said the Government’s intention was to force out of business the estimated 100 Queensland puppy farm operators who were not prepared to trade transparently.

“Our target is those breeders who are not prepared to consider the health and wellbeing of their dogs and those who seek to hide from scrutiny because their practices are reprehensible,” the Minister said.

An end to puppy farms in Queensland and the cruel and ruthless exploitation of dogs for profit is a step closer after Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Leanne Donaldson introduced a Bill into Parliament recently.

Minister Donaldson said the Bill to legislate for compulsory registration for dog breeders would mean cruel puppy farms would no longer be able to go undetected.

“A new dog breeder registration system will, for the first time, make it possible to locate and close down those dog breeding facilities where profit is put before the welfare of dogs,” the Minister said.

Minister Donaldson said the Government had undertaken extensive consultation including a public survey completed by more than 8,300 people and 95% of respondents supported compulsory registration for dog breeders.

Children at Beerwah Kindy donned gloves and got grubby last week to plant out their very own kitchen garden.

With the help of their teachers and some parents, the youngsters transformed a once over-grown mass of mint into a garden any green thumb could be proud of.

Beerwah Kindy co-director Katie Piva said the children were excited to find plenty of earthworms and even gecko eggs in the garden beds during the replanting process.

“The children are learning about science, nature and the environment from growing their own food.

“The children love playing in our beautiful outdoor environment, digging in the soil, getting dirty, creating Davina Marques and Sophie things and watching their plants grow,” Mrs Piva said.

The trays of seedlings were donated by Rumbalara Nursery, while the Coochin Creek Co-op came on board with the garden soil, sugar cane mulch and trellises, to complete the look.

Rumbalara Nursery's Davina Marques said she had been impressed with the number of handmade objects, textured stepping stones, and the scarecrow, which were already features of the garden zone.

“As parents and as nursery people, we are pleased to be a part of the growing realisation in school curriculums that the engagement of children and young adults in gardening, and understanding the production of their own food, is just as integral to their own health and well-being as attending the local sporting field or gymnasium,” she said.

Coochin Creek Co-op general manager Neal Stephen said inspiring future farmers was something the business, which has been operating in Beerwah since 1936, was passionate about.

The children will continue to nurture their garden and will be delighted to enjoy the fruits of their labour when harvest time rolls around.

Ficinia nodosa With all this wet weather around I am sure we are all finding problem areas in our gardens with poor drainage. One local plant that excels in these conditions, and that is also highly ornamental, is the Knobbly Club Rush. This member of the sedge family is found across Australia and is perfect for poorly drained sites, dams or creeks. It has lovely dark green stems with showy brown spherical flower heads. It grows approximately 80cm high and can be pruned annually. It is a clumping plant that also provides good habitat for frogs.

Barry Leask - Church on the Rise Maleny Just in observation during the last few years there has been such an escalation of fear and anger in society. This week some grandmother was viciously attacked by a man so overcome by anger that he physically attacked her vehicle.

Just about every night you see an incident of road rage on the news and just recently I was verbally attacked on two separate occasions within 15 minutes. I never reacted or allowed either incident to affect me but I commented to my wife Jan just how it makes you feel sad to see how negative society is becoming and how people need God in their lives.

In the time Jesus lived there was also so much anger and fear in society. Jesus message was so much of faith, love and forgiveness which really went against the grain of the attitude of that day. Luke the physician recorded some very powerful words of Jesus in his gospel.

Luke 21:26 ‘people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world.

For the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

Luke 21:28 Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.’

Sport Contributed by Michelle Lenz Recently students from Mooloolah State School represented our school at the Glasshouse district swimming carnival held in Beerwah. All the students put in a huge effort and swam extremely well against other schools in the district. Well done to you all for your efforts.

All the students that represented Mooloolah State School showed great sportsmanship by cheering on their team mates and congratulating rivals.

On the day the stand out for Mooloolah State School, was Tamsyn Douglas from Year 5. She swam amazingly and won all her races and took out age champion again, as she did last year; for 11-yearold girls. Tamsyn lives and breathes swimming and has grown up with a sporting family. We wish her all the best in the next chapter, which is the regional swimming and if she wins there she will go on to the state level for swimming.

San Taekwondo Juniors Head North

Contributed by Norm Taylor Last weekend Aaron Lerch, Joey Mortimer and Emma Hall travelled to Bundaberg to compete at the first Bundaberg Taekwondo open. The team had some tough matches but managed to come back with four hard-earned silver medals.

Emma, who is hoping to be selected on the Queensland team to contest the National titles in Bendigo later in the year, started strongly to win her first fight. In the final she was unable to overcome the strength of her opponent who was four years older and significantly heavier.

Joey (pictured above), in his first competition showed great skill and heart to win 8-2. Fighting an opponent from a heavier weight class in the final, it was a very close match, with scores even until the final 20 seconds. Joey was very happy to finish with his silver.

Aaron competed in both the red belt division and was also asked to step up into the Black Belt division. In the red belt division Aaron won his first fight and then lost in the final to finish with silver. Aaron’s first fight in the black belt division started well but going into the final round he was down a few points and while fighting back to close the gap he was hit by a jumping turning kick in the nose. Although not too much damage was done, he was unable to continue, due to a bleeding nose. Aaron was not deterred and was back at training on Tuesday with the rest of the team preparing for the next competition in April.

Contributed by Pam Marsden On Thursday, March 3, 54 Ladies played in the Monthly Medal Stroke competition generously sponsored by Nicole Purvis at First National Real Estate Beerwah and John Mellish, Professional at Beerwah Golf Club.

The event was played in three divisions.

Division 1 (0-18) Nett winner was Barbara Whitfield with 79. Heather Henn was runner-up with 81. Andrea Campbell won gross with 92.

Division 2 (19-29) Nett winner was Brenda Briese with a very creditable 69, Carolyn Gamble was runner-up with 74. Jennifer Kelly won gross with 97.

Division 3 (30-45) Nett winner was Pat Chapman on a countback from Josie Thistlethwaite who was runnerup. Both with 76. Heather Coyle won gross with 109.

Pin shot winners were Barbara Whitfield on 5 and Liz Flavelle on 16. Joy Banning had the best second shot on 18.

Brenda Briese won the putting with 27.

Ball run-down went to 79.

Next Thursday, the ladies play in a Single Stableford event with trophies sponsored by Sue Williamson and Pamela Marsden.

Maleny Junior Golf Classic to become an Annual Event The Glass House Mountains Zone Junior Golf

Association (GHMZJGA) plans to include Maleny on its annual calendar of events following the success of the club’s inaugural competition for juniors held on Sunday, March 6.

A field of 54 players took part in the Maleny Junior Classic competition involving 3-hole, 6-hole and 9-hole formats to suit various age groups and abilities.

GHMZJGA president Shaun O’Hara said the event had attracted tremendous support from clubs both within the zone and beyond from Noosa to the north, Mt Warren Park to the south and Blackbutt to the west.

“We’ve all been very impressed by what we’ve seen here at Maleny because the quality and presentation of this new golf course has really exceeded everyone’s expectations I think,” he said.

“We now want to make the Maleny Junior Classic an annual event and will also aim to extend the format to include an 18-hole competition as well next year.”

Maleny Golf Club President Dr Max Whitten welcomed the opportunity for the club to support junior golf and host such an event annually.

“The sight of so many juniors out their enjoying themselves and playing the course really does augur well for the future of the game in our region and just maybe there are some future Australian golf champions among them,” Dr Whitten said.

Gross winner of the boy’s 9-hole event was Braydon Green from Blackbutt who shot 50 off the stick to card a net 34 while Kahler Doolan from Virginia was the net winner with 33. Winner of the girl’s 9-hole event was Juhi Rampersad from Pine Rivers with 55 (net 37) while Lina Bohan from Bribie Island was the net winner with 42.
